In paper industries, Multiple Stage Evaporator (MSE) is used to concentrate black liquor. Due to the energy intensive nature of MSE, the global energy scenario stresses on optimizing its energy efficiency. Moreover, the necessity of a tight control of product quality demands superior understanding of system dynamics for controller design. This paper presents a robust fractional‐order Proportional–Integral–Derivative (FOPID) controller for concentration control of black liquor in Heptad's effect MSE. First, the steady‐state unknown process parameters are estimated by solving the nonlinear steady‐state model. Thereafter, these optimal process parameters are utilized to simulate the nonlinear dynamic model to obtain the transfer functions. By using these transfer functions, the FOPID controller is designed whose parameters are tuned via Water Cycle Algorithm (WCA). The competence of WCA toward controller tuning is validated by comparing with other optimization techniques (Genetic Algorithm [GA], Simulated Annealing [SA], Particle Swarm Optimization [PSO], and Krill Herd [KH]). Moreover, the performance of the proposed FOPID controller in concentration control, set‐point tracking, and noise suppression is validated by comparing with conventional PID, two‐degree of freedom‐PID (2‐DOF‐PID), and Internal Model Control (IMC) controllers. The results demonstrate that FOPID controller reduces the Integral Square Error (ISE) by 91.05%, 89.81%, and 78.84%, respectively, with respect to PID, 2‐DOF‐PID, and IMC. Abstract: Pulp and paper mills are one of the major effluent generating industries in the world. In most cases, mill effluent (treated or raw) is discharged back into a river, creek, stream or other water body; resulting in negative environmental impacts, as well as social concerns, among the downstream users. Pulp and paper mill effluent management, which could result in zero discharge into downstream water bodies, would present the best management option to address socio-environmental concerns. This paper presents such an effort aimed at closing the water cycle by using treated effluent from the mill to irrigate forage and fodder crops for producing animals feed. The treated effluent is delivered from the mill through gravity into a winter storage dam of 490ML capacity. For irrigation applications on 110ha of farmland, which is 42% of the total farmland, the water is pumped from the winter storage dam to five individual paddocks with Centre Pivot (CP) irrigators and one rectangular paddock with a Soft Hose Travelling (SHT) irrigator. From October 2001 to June 2006, a total of 2651mm of wastewater was applied at the farm. The impact assessment results, obtained from field monitoring, investigations and analysis, indicated that the closed water cycle effluent management strategy described had resulted in a lessening of the impact on water resources usually associated with paper mills. However, social attitudes to the use of crops that have been irrigated with recycled waters and the resulting impact on market value of the produce may still be a major consideration. River ice, like open-water conditions, is an integral component of the cold-climate hydrological cycle. The annual succession of river ice formation, growth, decay and clearance can include low flows and ice jams, as well as midwinter and spring break-up events. Reports and associated data of river ice occurrence are often limited to single locations or regional assessments, are season-specific, and use readily available data. Within Canada, the National Hydrometric Program (NHP) operates a network of gauging stations with water level as the primary measured variable to derive discharge. In the late 1990s, the Water Science and Technology Directorate of Environment and Climate Change Canada initiated a long-term effort to compile, archive and extract river-ice-related information from NHP hydrometric records. This data article describes the original research data set produced by this near 20-year effort: the Canadian River Ice Database (CRID). The CRID holds almost 73 000 recorded variables from a subset of 196 NHP stations throughout Canada that were in operation within the period 1894 to 2015. Over 100 000 paper and digital files were reviewed, representing 10 378 station years of active operation. The task of compiling this database involved manual extraction and input of more than 460 000 data entries on water level, discharge, ice thickness, date, time and data quality rating. Guidelines on the data extraction, rating procedure and challenges are provided. At each location, time series of up to 15 variables specific to the occurrence of freeze-up and winter-low events, midwinter break-up, ice thickness, spring break-up, and maximum open-water level were compiled. This database follows up on several earlier efforts to compile information on river ice, which are summarized herein, and expands the scope and detail for use in Canadian river ice research and applications. During autumn 2012 and winter 2013, two Special Observation Periods (SOPs) of the Hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment (HyMeX) took place. For the preparatory studies and to support the instrument deployment during the field campaign, a dedicated version of the operational convective-scale AROME-France model was developed: the AROME-WMED model. It covers the western Mediterranean basin with a 48 h forecast range. It provided real time analyses and forecasts which were sent daily to the HyMeX operational centre to forecast high precipitation events and to help decision makers on the deployment of observation instruments. This paper presents the main features of this numerical weather prediction system in terms of data assimilation and forecast. Some specific data of the HyMeX SOP were assimilated in real time. The forecast skill of the AROME-WMED is then assessed with objective scores and compared to the operational AROME-France model, for both autumn 2012 (5 September to 6 November 2012) and winter 2013 (1 February to 15 March 2013) SOPs. The overall performance of AROME-WMED is good and similar to those of AROME-France for the 0 to 30 h common forecast range. The 24 to 48 h forecast range is of course less accurate but remains useful for scheduling observation deployment. Aerosol–cloud interactions play a crucial role in shaping Earth's climate and hydrological cycle. Observing these interactions with high precision and accuracy is of the utmost importance for improving climate models and predicting Earth's climate. Over the past few decades, lidar techniques have emerged as powerful tools for investigating aerosol–cloud interactions due to their ability to provide detailed vertical profiles of aerosol particles and clouds with high spatial and temporal resolutions. This review paper provides an overview of recent advancements in the study of ACI using lidar techniques. The paper begins with a description of the different cloud microphysical processes that are affected by the presence of aerosol, and with an outline of lidar remote sensing application in characterizing aerosol particles and clouds. The formation, evolution and regeneration of water resources follow the general laws of nature. However, in recent years, with the increasing social and economic activities of human beings, the hydrological cycle of nature has undergone significant changes, which has led to a prominent contradiction in the water supply-demand. It has also led to a series of serious environmental and ecological problems, which have caused certain areas, such as the Tarim River Basin (TRB) to face severe conditions of water shortage, downstream river channel cutoff, vegetation degradation and ecological environment deterioration. The lack of water is the main problem to solve these problems, and the water resource reproducible ability, now and in the future, is the key to solving the core problem of water shortage. Through collecting data of precipitation, runoff and temperature of representative hydrographic stations of the Tarim River, as well as the data of geographical location and human activities, this paper studies the factors affecting the water resource reproducible ability in the TRB. The paper draws the following conclusions: (1) The water resource reproducible ability in the source flow area of TRB is increasingwhen the temperature and precipitation is increasing. (2) The water resource reproducible ability in the west of TRB is greater than that in the east. Irrigation, as one of the most impactful human interventions in the terrestrial water cycle, has been arousing great attention due to research on the impacts of its interaction with climate. In this paper, we used a scientometric analysis method to explore the overall publication output of the climatic effects of irrigation (CEI) field from the Web of Science Core Collection (WSCC) database, covering the time period from 1993 to 2022. And, through a visual scientific citation analysis tool, CiteSpace, we studied the knowledge structure, disciplinary trajectory, frontier hotspots, and academic impacts in the field of CEI. Using topic screening, 2919 publications related to irrigation climate were searched. CEI research has gone through the knowledge germination stage (1993–2005), knowledge accretion stage (2006–2012), and the knowledge prosperity stage (2013–2022), respectively. Ecology, earth, and marine are the most influential disciplines of research in this field, and they are influenced by earth, geology, geophysics and plant, ecology, zoology. AWM and SOTTE are the most popular journals currently. The academic impacts of scientific stakeholders are uneven. European and American countries have profound influence in the research field. The keyword of "Climate change" is the turning point in the co-word analysis network, and research hotspots focus on "carbon dioxide", "model", "climate", "growth", "temperature", "biomass", "global warming", "CO2", "global change", "dynamics", "adjustments", and "atmospheric CO2". The knowledge base of the CEI field can be divided into 14 clusters, such as cotton production, semi-arid condition, and irrigation water supply, and these three clusters are the three largest among them. This paper offers a comprehensive scientometric review of CEI, and, to some degree, provides some reference for the relevant research on the climate effects of irrigation, which will be beneficial to understand the current research situation and development trend in this field, as well as provide state-of-the-art and future perspectives. With the expansion of China's automobile market and the increase in the proportion of electric vehicles, the influence of the automobile industry on water resources has been increasingly, and as a result, water resources will become an important factor restricting the development of the electric vehicle industry in China. Until now, there are still no in-depth studies on the influences of the water footprint of electric vehicles. The paper establishes a life cycle assessment model by which to analyze the reduction potential of the water footprint of various types of passenger vehicles in their operation. The paper also compares the water footprint of passenger vehicles under different power structures, revealing the potential influence of developing electric vehicles on the demand of water resources. The results show that at the base year (2019), the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles consume more water than the gasoline-based internal combustion engine vehicles do, while water consumption of the hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles is lower than that of the gasoline-based internal combustion engine vehicles; as for the year 2035, even after the proportion of renewable energy generation increases, the water withdrawal and consumption of the battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles will still be larger than those of the gasoline-based internal combustion engine vehicles. Terrestrial water storage (TWS) exerts a key control in global water, energy, and biogeochemical cycles. Although certain causal relationships exist between precipitation and TWS, the latter also reflects impacts of anthropogenic activities. Thus, quantification of the spatial patterns of TWS will not only help to understand feedbacks between climate dynamics and hydrologic cycle, but also provide new model calibration constraints for improving the current land surface models. In this work, the connectivity of TWS is quantified using the climate network theory, which has received broad attention in the climate modeling community in recent years. Complex networks of TWS anomalies are built using two global TWS datasets, a remote-sensing product that is obtained from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission, and a model-generated dataset from the global land data assimilation system's NOAH model (GLDAS-NOAH). Both datasets have 1° ×1 ° resolutions and cover most global land areas except for permafrost regions. TWS networks are built by first quanti15 fying pairwise correlation among all valid TWS anomaly time series, and then applying a statistical cutoff threshold to retain only the most important features in the network. Basinwise network connectivity maps are used to illuminate connectivity of individual river basins with other regions. The constructed network degree centrality maps show TWS hotspots around the globe and the patterns are consistent with recent GRACE 20 studies. Parallel analyses of networks constructed using the two datasets indicate that the GLDAS-NOAH model captures many of the spatial patterns shown by GRACE, although significant discrepancies exist in some regions. A new, two-layer canopy module with thermal inertia as part of the detailed snow model SNOWPACK (version 3.2.1) is presented and evaluated. This module is designed to reproduce the difference in thermal response between leafy and woody canopy elements, and their impact on the underlying snowpack energy balance. Given the number of processes resolved, the SNOWPACK model with its enhanced canopy module constitutes a very advanced, physics-based atmosphere-to-soil-through-canopy-and-snow modelling chain. Comparisons of modelled sub-canopy thermal radiation to stand-scale observations at an Alpine site (Alptal, Switzerland) demonstrate the improvements of the new canopy module. Both thermal heat mass and the two-layer canopy formulation contribute to reduce the daily amplitude of the modelled canopy temperature signal, in agreement with observations. Particularly striking is the attenuation of the night-time drop in canopy temperature, which was a key model bias. We specifically show that a single-layered canopy model is unable to produce this limited temperature drop correctly. The impact of the new parameterizations on the modelled dynamics of the subcanopy snowpack is analysed and yields consistent results but the frequent occurrence of mixed-precipitation events at Alptal prevents a conclusive assessment of model performance against snow data. The new model is also successfully tested without specific tuning against measured tree temperatures and biomass heat storage fluxes at the boreal site of Norunda (Sweden). Global hydrological reanalyses are modelled datasets providing information on river discharge evolution everywhere in the world. With multi‐decadal daily timeseries, they provide long‐term context to identify extreme hydrological events such as floods and droughts. By covering the majority of the world's land masses, they can fill the many gaps in river discharge in‐situ observational data, especially in the global South. These gaps impede knowledge of both hydrological status and future evolution and hamper the development of reliable early warning systems for hydrological‐related disaster reduction. River discharge is a natural integrator of the water cycle over land. Global hydrological reanalysis datasets offer an understanding of its spatio‐temporal variability and are therefore critical for addressing the water–energy–food–environment nexus. This paper describes how global hydrological reanalyses can fill the lack of ground measurements by using earth system or hydrological models to provide river discharge time series. Following an inventory of alternative sources of river discharge datasets, reviewing their advantages and limitations, the paper introduces the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS) modelling chain and its reanalysis dataset as an example of a global hydrological reanalysis dataset. It then reviews examples of downstream applications for global hydrological reanalyses, including monitoring of land water resources and ocean dynamics, understanding large‐scale hydrological extreme fluctuations, early warning systems, earth system model diagnostics and the calibration and training of models, with examples from three Copernicus Services (Emergency Management, Marine and Climate Change). Evapotranspiration (ET) is a very important variable in the global water cycle, carbon cycle, and energy cycle. However, there are still some uncertainties in existing ET products. Therefore, this paper evaluates the uncertainty of three widely used global ET products (ERA5-Land, GLDAS-Noah, and MERRA-2) based on the three-cornered hat (TCH) method, and generates a new ET product based on this. The new product is a long-series global monthly ET dataset with a spatial resolution of 0.25° × 0.25° and a time span of 21 years. The results show that ERA5-Land (8.46 mm/month) has the lowest uncertainty among the three ET products, followed by GLDAS-Noah (8.81 mm/month) and MERRA-2 (11.78 mm/month). The new product (TCH) captures ET trends in different regions as well as validating against in situ flux observations, and it exhibits better performance than the re-analysis dataset (ERA5-Land) in vegetation classifications such as evergreen needle-leaf forest, grassland, open shrubland, savanna, and woody savanna. The linear trend analysis of the new product shows a significant decreasing trend in south-eastern South America and southwestern parts of Africa, and an increasing trend in almost all other regions, including eastern North America, north-eastern South America, western Europe, north-central Africa, southern Asia, and south-eastern Oceania. A new system for high frequency boundary layer profiling based upon radiosondes and free balloons was tested during the field phases of the Boundary Layer Late Afternoon and Sunset Turbulence (BLLAST 2011, Lannemezan, France) and of the Hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment (HyMeX, 2012). The system consists of a conventional Vaisala receiver and a GPS radiosonde (pressure, wind, humidity and temperature) that is tied to a couple of inflated balloons. The principle of the sounding system is to permit the first balloon to detach from the rawinsonde at a predetermined altitude, allowing the rawinsonde to slowly descend with the second balloon to perform a second, new sounding. The instrumentation is then eventually recovered. The expecting landing area is anticipated before the flight by estimating the trajectory of the probe from a forecasted wind profile and by specifying both the balloon release altitude and the mean ascent and descent rates of the system. The real landing point is determined by the last transmission of the radiosonde GPS and the visual landmark provided by the second balloon. About 70 soundings were performed with a recovery rate of more than 80%. The detection of hydrogen chloride (HCl) in the atmosphere of Mars was among the primary objectives of the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) mission. Its discovery using the Atmospheric Chemistry Suite mid‐infrared channel (ACS MIR) showed a distinct seasonality and possible link to dust activity. This paper is part 2 of a study investigating the link between HCl and aerosols by comparing gas measurements made with TGO to dust and water ice opacities measured with the Mars Climate Sounder (MCS). In part 1, we showed, and compared, the seasonal evolution of vertical profiles of HCl, water vapor, temperature, dust opacity, and water ice opacity over the dusty periods around perihelion (solar longitudes 180°–360°) across Mars years 34–36. In part 2, we investigated the quantitative correlations in the vertical distribution between each quantity, as well as ozone. We show that there is a strong positive correlation between HCl and water vapor, which is expected due to fast photochemical production rates for HCl when reacting with water vapor photolysis products. We also show a strong positive correlation between water vapor and temperature, but are unable to show any correlation between temperature and HCl. There are weak correlations between the opacities of dust and water ice, and dust and water vapor, but only very low correlations between dust and HCl. We close with a discussion of possible sources and sinks and that interactions between HCl and water ice are the most likely for both, given the inter‐comparison. Plain Language Summary: The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) has observed three Martian dusty seasons (summer in the southern hemisphere). In mid‐2018, we made the first detection of hydrogen chloride (HCl) in the Martian atmosphere using the Atmospheric Chemistry Suite (ACS). Finding this gas, among others, was a priority of ExoMars because its primary source may be volcanic. Since then, we have observed two more dusty periods with the reappearance of HCl each time. In part 1, we presented the climatology of HCl over these three dusty periods (in Mars years 34, 35, and 36) and investigate their relationships with temperature and water vapor measured by ACS, and with airborne dust and water ice measured with the Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). In this paper, part 2, we quantify the correlations between HCl, water vapor, ozone, dust, temperature, and water ice. We show that HCl is closely correlated to water vapor, which is, in turn, correlated to temperature. There is only a very low correlation between HCl and dust or water ice, which both impact water vapor. Possible mechanisms for seasonal HCl production and destruction are discussed, concluding that the freeze‐thaw cycle of atmospheric water is most likely. Land surface water is a key part in the global ecosystem balance and hydrological cycle. Remote sensing has become an effective tool for its spatio-temporal monitoring. However, remote sensing results exemplified in so-called water indices are subject to several limitations. This paper proposes a new and effective water index called the Sentinel Multi-Band Water Index (SMBWI) to extract water bodies in complex environments from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. Individual tests explore the effectiveness of the SMBWI in eliminating interference of various special interfering cover features. The Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis Technique Algorithm (ISODATA) method and confusion matrix along with the derived accuracy evaluation indicators are used to provide a threshold reference when extracting water bodies and evaluate the accuracy of the water body extraction results, respectively. The SMBWI and eight other commonly used water indices are qualitatively and quantitatively compared through vision and accuracy evaluation indicators, respectively. Here, the SMBWI is proven to be the most effective at suppressing interference of buildings and their shadows, cultivated lands, vegetation, clouds and their shadows, alpine terrain with bare ground and glaciers when extracting water bodies. The overall accuracy in all tests was consistently greater than 96.5%. The SMBWI is proven to have a high ability to identify mixed pixels of water and non-water, with the lowest total error among nine water indices. Most notably, better results are obtained when extracting water bodies under interfering environments of cover features. High-modulus asphalt mixtures (HMAMs) are potential materials for achieving long-life pavement performance, and understanding their long-term performance degradation mechanism is crucial for analyzing pavement performance degradation under long-term exposure to traffic and environmental coupling conditions. This paper aims to examine the long-term evolution of high- and low-temperature performance and water stability in HMAMs derived from modified nature asphalt, prepared using microparticle suspension technology, under heavy load and humid heat conditions. Four asphalt mixtures (AC-13, BBME-13, SMA-13, SBSAC-13) were prepared, and then their dynamic moduli were tested. A test plan for the long-term performance of the mixtures was designed, and the performances of HMAMs with different gradations and time were analyzed. Furthermore, corresponding long-term performance degradation models of HMAMs were established. The results show that the HMAMs of modified natural asphalt have better high-temperature performance than HMAMs of high-modulus agent/SBS-modified asphalt. However, following prolonged thermal aging and freeze-thaw cycles, the low-temperature performance shows the opposite trend. In addition, thermal aging had the same effect on the long-term low-temperature performance of both types of HMAM, with the HMAMs of modified natural asphalt being less affected by long-term freeze-thaw cycling. The long-term bending tensile strain attenuation of HMAMs can be simulated using an exponential function. Both types of HMAMs display similar water stability under dry-wet cycles and dynamic water erosion condition. Stable isotopes in natural water bodies serve as hydrologic tracers, with a history of extensive application in karst groundwater research. The present paper is a systematic review of previous research results, with the objective of sorting out and summarizing the stable isotopic characteristics of karst groundwater in southwest China, which is the most typical karst region worldwide. Comprehensive analysis reveals that the deuterium and oxygen isotope values of most karst groundwater are characterized temporally as 'enriched in the rainy season and depleted in the dry season', which is the opposite of the pattern of precipitation. While the spatial distribution feature is basically consistent with the spatial variation pattern of precipitation, which is characterized as 'depleted from the coast to the interior'. Additionally, the main applications of stable isotopes to karst groundwater are discussed, including karst groundwater recharge source and recharge elevation identification, research on karst groundwater in the hydrological cycle, the hydrological process of karst groundwater, and karst groundwater contamination tracking. Finally, we looked forward to future research on karst groundwater based on deuterium and oxygen isotopes. It is our hope that this review may provide insight into the study of karst groundwater. Recent studies have shown significant sea surface salinity (SSS) changes at scales ranging from regional to global. In this study, we estimate global salinity means and trends using historical (1950-2014) SSS data from the UK Met. Office Hadley Centre objectively analyzed monthly fields and recent data from the SMOS satellite (2010-2014). We separate the different components (regimes) of the global surface salinity by fitting a Gaussian Mixture Model to the data and using Expectation-Maximization to distinguish the means and trends of the data. The procedure uses a non-subjective method (Bayesian Information Criterion) to extract the optimal number of means and trends. The results show the presence of three separate regimes: Regime A (1950-1990) is characterized by small trend magnitudes; Regime B (1990-2009) exhibited enhanced trends; and Regime C (2009-2014) with significantly larger trend magnitudes. The salinity differences between regime means were around 0.01. The trend acceleration could be related to an enhanced global hydrological cycle or to a change in the sampling methodology. This paper shares an early-career perspective on potential themes for the upcoming International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) Scientific Decade (SD). This opinion paper synthesizes six discussion sessions in western Europe identifying three themes that all offer a different perspective on the hydrological threats the world faces and could serve to direct the broader hydrological community: "Tipping points and thresholds in hydrology," "Intensification of the water cycle," and "Water services under pressure." Additionally, four trends were distinguished concerning the way in which hydrological research is conducted: big data, bridging science and practice, open science, and inter- and multidisciplinarity. These themes and trends will provide valuable input for future discussions on the theme for the next IAHS SD. We encourage other early-career scientists to voice their opinion by organizing their own discussion sessions and commenting on this paper to make this initiative grow from a regional initiative to a global movement. Interpretations of integrated water cycle management (IWCM) differ across jurisdictions. This paper discusses 10 interpretations of the IWCM concept globally, in Australia and in jurisdictions similar to Australia. Five interpretations of many IWCM versions in Australia are reviewed. This strategic concept aims to address the internal challenges of managing water demand and supply, achieving appropriate disposal and/or wastewater recycling for re-use and distribution networks and providing services at an affordable rate, per changing community needs. The IWCM concept is also recognised as a resource planning tool to address external challenges, such as the uncertainties of climate change, the circular economy and resilience. All 10 IWCM concepts reviewed in this paper acknowledge governance and stakeholders to be of primary importance: governance to drive the conceptual interpretation and stakeholders to develop, drive, implement and promote IWCM as adept at addressing local challenges. The two global interpretations place primary importance on governance, stakeholder engagement and natural resource management, whereas the local interpretations place equally high importance on water critical infrastructure and water economy. Technology, which is changing at an unprecedented pace, is considered, but not as an immediate or primary challenge. We conducted high frequency measurements of the δ18 O value of atmospheric CO2 from a juniper (Juniperus monosperma) woodland in New Mexico, USA, over a four- year period to investigate climatic and physiological regulation of the δ18O value of ecosystem respiration (δR). Rain pulses reset δR with the dominant water source isotope composition, followed by progressive enrichment of δR. Transpiration (ET) was significantly related to post-pulse δR enrichment because leaf water δ18O value showed strong enrichment with increasing vapor pressure deficit that occurs following rain. Post-pulse δR enrichment was correlated with both ET and the ratio of ET to soil evaporation (ET/ES). In contrast, soil water δ18O value was relatively stable and δR enrichment was not correlated with ES. Model simulations captured the large post-pulse δR enrichments only when the offset between xylem and leaf water δ18O value was modeled explicitly and when a gross flux model for CO2 retro-diffusion was included. Drought impacts δR through the balance between evaporative demand, which enriches δR, and low soil moisture availability, which attenuates δR enrichment through reduced ET. Oceania Rivers are hotspots of high DIN (dissolved inorganic nitrogen) and DIP (dissolved inorganic phosphorus) transport. However, the effects of hydrologic controls and land use alternation on the temporal variations of DIN and DIP are rarely documented. In this study, we monitored the nitrate and phosphate concentrations from three headwater catchments with different cultivation gradients at a 3-day interval. This sampling scheme was supplemented with a 3-h interval monitoring during typhoon periods. The results showed that the DIN and DIP yields in the pristine, moderately cultivated, and intensively cultivated watersheds were 7.52/0.31, 31.17/0.30, and 40.96/0.52 kgha-1 yr-1, respectively. The high DIN yields are comparable to the intensively and extensively disturbed large rivers around the world. These N yields may be due to a high level of nitrogen deposition, rainfall-runoff, and fertilizer application. The importance of event sampling was indicated by the contribution of the three typhoons to the annual DIN and DIP fluxes, which were 30% and 60 %, respectively. Both DIN and DIP fluxes significantly increased as the cultivation gradient increased. The DIN and DIP ratio varied from 54 to 230 depending on the decrease of the cultivation gradient. This value is higher than the global mean of ~ 18. Thus, we speculate that nitrogen saturation occurs in the headwater catchments of Oceania Rivers. The results obtained provide fundamental clues of DIN and DIP yield of Oceania Rivers, which are helpful in understanding the impact of human disturbance on headwater watersheds. Modifications to land can serve to jointly reduce risks of floods and droughts to people and to ecosystems. Whether land modifications are implemented will depend on the willingness and ability of a diversity of actors. This article reviews the state of knowledge on land modification use in areas exposed to dual hydrologic risks and the land owners, managers, and users who directly make decisions about action on lands they control. The review presents a typology of land modifications and explains how land modifications interact with the hydrological cycle to reduce risks. It then addresses the roles and perspectives of the land owners, managers, and users undertaking land modifications, summarizing theories explaining motivations for, as well as barriers to and enablers of, land modification implementation. Extreme water incidents point out a value conflict surrounding the resource. While drought and floods echo the inadequate land and resource uses, the increase in social inequalities exposes the practical, physiological, and social consequences. The multiple value action throughout the water cycle also narrowed disputes to those that neglect its vital importance, and the constraints imposed to the services, such as low tariffs, and lack of local engagement, make sustainable water systems more difficult. This article develops a systematic literature review to understand the academic motivations surrounding water value and gaps in its systematic approach. A sample with 84 papers is created by an interactive keyword selection and its general characteristics are presented. A dynamic reading technique extracts data and classifies the papers according to 14 research motivations, where the water multifunctionality and the user value stand out. The bibliographic coupling analysis identifies a cluster of 16 papers related to integration and connected to planning, decision, and management. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) plays a key role in the water cycle of High Asia and its downstream regions. The respective influence of the Indian and East Asian summer monsoon on TP precipitation and the regional water resources, together with the detection of moisture transport pathways and source regions are subject of recent research. In this study we present a twelve-year high-resolution climatology of the atmospheric water transport (AWT) on and towards the TP, using a new dataset, the High Asia Reanalysis (HAR), which better represents the complex topography of the TP and surrounding high mountain ranges than coarse resolution datasets. We focus on spatio temporal patterns, vertical distribution and transport through the TP boundaries. The results show that the mid-latitude westerlies have a higher share in summertime AWT on the TP than assumed so far. Water vapour (WV) transport constitute the main part, whereby transports of water as cloud particles (CP) play also a role in winter in the Karakoram and western Himalayan regions. High mountain valleys in the Himalayas facilitate AWT from the south whereas the high mountain regions inhibit the AWT to a large extend and limit the influence of the Indian summer monsoon. No transport from the East Asian monsoon to the TP could be detected. Our results show that 40% of the atmospheric moisture needed for precipitation comes from outside the TP, while the remaining 60% are provided by local moisture recycling. How far precipitation variability can be explained by variable moisture supply has to be studied in future research by analysing the atmospheric dynamic and moisture recycling more in detail. In this paper, the role of soft open point (SOP) is investigated with and without system re-configuration (SR) in reducing overall system power losses and improving voltage profile, as well as the effect of increasing the number of SOPs connected to distribution systems under different scenarios using a proposed hybrid water cycle algorithm (HWCA). The HWCA is formulated to enhance the water cycle algorithm (WCA) search performance based on the genetic algorithm (GA) for a complex nonlinear problem with discrete and continuous variables represented in this paper by SOP installation and SR. The WCA is one of the most effective optimization algorithms, however, it may have difficulty striking a balance between exploration and exploitation due to the nature of the proposed nonlinear optimization problem, which mostly causes slow convergence and poor robustness. Consequently, the HWCA proposed in this paper is an efficient solution to improve the balance between exploration and exploitation, which in turn leads to improving the WCA's overall performance without the possibility of getting trapped in local minima. Several cases are studied and conducted on an IEEE 33-node and the IEEE 69-node to investigate the real benefit gained from using SOPs alone or simultaneously with the SR. Based on the obtained results, the proposed HWCA succeeds in enhancing the performance of the proposed test systems considerably in terms of loss reduction (e.g., 31.1–63.3% for IEEE 33-node and 55.7–82.1% for IEEE 69-node compared to the base case) and voltage profile when compared to the base case while maintaining acceptable voltage magnitudes in most cases. Furthermore, the superiority of the proposed method based on the HWCA is validated when compared with the GA and WCA separately for both test systems. Bogs can store large amounts of lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) attributed to atmospheric deposition of anthropogenic emissions. Pb and As are exported along with dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in these organic-rich systems, but it is not yet clear which hydrological (pre-)conditions favor their export. This study combines one year continuous monitoring of precipitation, bog water level and pore water concentration changes with bog discharge, DOC, As and Pb stream concentrations and fluxes. Concentrations ranged from 5 to 30mgL-1 for DOC, 0.2 to 1.9 μg L-1 for As and 1.3 to 12 μg L-1 for Pb with highest concentrations in late summer. As and Pb concentrations significantly correlated with DOC concentrations. Fluxes depended strongly on discharge, as 40% of As and 43% of Pb were exported by the upper 10% of discharge, pointing out the over-proportional contribution of heavy rain and high discharge events to annual As, Pb and DOC export. Exponential increase in element export from the bog is explained by connection of additional DOC, As and Pb pools in the acrotelm during water table rise, which is most pronounced after drought. Pb, As and DOC concentrations in pore water provide evidence of an increase of the soluble Pb pool as soon as the peat layer gets hydrologically connected, while DOC and As peak concentrations in runoff lag in comparison to Pb. Our data indicates a distinct bog-specific discharge threshold of 8 L s-1, which is thought to depend mainly on the bogs size and drainage conditions. Above this threshold element concentration do not further increase and discharge gets diluted. Combining pore water and discharge data shows that As and Pb exports are not only dependent on the amount of precipitation and discharge, but on the frequency and depth of water table fluctuations. Comparing the annual bog As and Pb export with element inventories indicates that As is much more mobilized than Pb, with annual fluxes accounting for 0.85 and 0.27‰ of total As and Pb inventory, respectively. The meridional overturning circulation (MOC) in the ocean is a key player in the global climate system, while continental topography provides an essential backdrop to the system. In this study, we design a series of coupled model sensitivity experiments to investigate the influence of various mountain ranges on the global thermohaline circulation. The results highlight the influence of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) on the global thermohaline circulation. It emerges as a requisite for establishing the Atlantic MOC (AMOC) and a determining factor for the cessation of the Pacific MOC (PMOC). Additionally, the Antarctic continent plays a vital role in facilitating the TP to form the AMOC. While the formation of the AMOC cannot be attributed to any single mountain range, the TP alone can inhibit the PMOC's development. By modifying the global hydrological cycle, the TP is likely to have been crucial in molding the global thermohaline circulation. The growing need for high-performance folded cascode CMOS OTAs in various fields, such as electronics and communications, requires them to operate with wide bandwidth, high voltage gain, compact devices, and low power consumption. Recent research indicates that implementing the water cycle algorithm (WCA) can greatly improve the performance of the folded cascode CMOS operational transconductance amplifier (OTA). This is due to the WCA's ability to perform both global search and local exploration efficiently. Notably, the OTA in question is constructed using 0.18µm TSMC technology and operates with a voltage supply of ±1.8V. The results of the simulation were collected using PSPICE software (version 17.4). These design solutions demonstrate exceptional efficiency, delivering significant amplification, high frequency, and minimal power usage. In addition, the paper demonstrates the implementation and simulation outcomes of a folded cascode CMOS operational transconductance amplifier utilizing the water cycle algorithm, MATLAB was employed for this purpose. Using WCA in the design of an OTA for folded cascode CMOS OTA results in significant improvements in performance metrics. Experiences a significant increase in voltage gain, with an increase in gain bandwidth by a factor of five compared to the algorithm-free design. In addition, power consumption is reduced by 15.5%, and the common mode rejection ratio is improved by 15.18% compared to the non-WCA folded cascode CMOS OTA design. Taking the Jiefangzha irrigation area of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as the research area, the response relationships between the backscattering coefficient and radar frequency, radar incidence angle, root-mean-square height, correlation length, and soil water content under different conditions were simulated using advanced integral equations. The backscattering characteristics of exposed surfaces in cold and dry irrigation areas were discussed, and the reasons for the different effects were analyzed. Based on this, surface roughness models and statistical regression moisture inversion models were constructed through co-polarized backscatter coefficients and combined surface roughness. The correlation between the inverted surface roughness values and the measured values was R2 = 0.7569. The correlation between the soil moisture simulation values and the measured values was R2 = 0.8501, with an RMSE of 0.04. The findings showed a strong correlation between the values from the regression simulation and the measured data, indicating that the model can be applied to soil moisture inversion and has a good inversion accuracy. Compared with previous studies in the same area, the inversion model proposed in this paper has a higher accuracy and is more suitable for the inversion of soil moisture in the Jiefangzha irrigation area. The nonlinear interactions between river discharge, astronomical tidal wave, and local geomorphology during storm passage or water release from upstream dams can produce severe floods in the Río Negro lower basin (Argentina). For this reason, this paper aims to detect and study nonlinear processes in this area. The watercourse hydrodynamics was described using hourly water level data from three limnigraphs during 2003 – 2021 and flow time series. The tide gauge dataset was employed to describe the influence of tidal cycles on the hydrological regimen. Nonlinear processes' impact on the astronomical tidal cycle and river discharge was analyzed using Harmonic Analysis, and Fourier higher-order spectra, also it was complemented with the selection of two study cases. Harmonic Analysis results showed that the tidal wave entry upstream of the Río Negro modulates its hydrological regime, presenting the water column semidiurnal variations. Also, high-order spectral analysis detected nonlinear interactions in the signal in storm conditions with an energetic redistribution among the linear tidal constituents toward shallow water harmonics. Additionally, nonlinear interactions provoked a delay in the tidal ebb phase with a consequential extension of flooding duration time. Plain lakes play a crucial role in the hydrological cycle of a watershed, but their interactions with adjacent rivers and downstream water bodies can create complex river–lake relationships, often leading to frequent flooding disasters. Taking Poyang Lake as an example, this paper delves into its interaction with the Yangtze River, revealing the spatiotemporal patterns of flood propagation within the lake and its impact on surrounding flood control measures. The aim is to provide insights for flood management in similar environments worldwide. This study employs a comprehensive approach combining hydrological statistical analysis and two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling, based on extensive hydrological, topographic, and socio-economic data. The results indicate that the annual maximum outflow from Poyang Lake is primarily controlled by floods within the watershed, while the highest annual lake water level is predominantly influenced by floods from the Yangtze River. The peak discharge typically reaches the lake outlet within 48 h, with the peak water level taking slightly longer at 54 h. However, water storage in the lake can shorten the time that it takes for the peak discharge to arrive. When converging with floods from the Yangtze River, the peak water level may be delayed by up to 10 days, due to the top-supporting interaction. Furthermore, floods from the "Five Rivers" propagate differently within the lake, affecting various lake regions to differing degrees. Notably, floods from the Fu River cause the most significant rise in the lake's water level under the same flow rate. The top-supporting effect from the Yangtze River also significantly impacts the water surface slope of Poyang Lake. When the Yangtze River flood discharge significantly exceeds that of the "Five Rivers" (i.e., when the top-supporting intensity value, f, exceeds four), the lake surface becomes as flat as a reservoir. During major floods in the watershed, the water level difference in the lake can increase dramatically, potentially creating a "dynamic storage capacity" of up to 840 million cubic meters. Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are narrow, elongated, synoptic jets of water vapor that play important roles in the global water cycle. The continually developing Tracking Atmospheric Rivers Globally as Elongated Targets (tARget) algorithm identifies AR objects at individual time steps based on thresholding integrated water vapor transport (IVT) and other requirements, and tracks each AR object in time and space. Building on previous versions of tARget, this paper discusses further refinements to the algorithm to better handle ARs in tropical and polar areas, as well as "zonal" ARs which the previous versions of the algorithm were not designed to capture. This further regionally refined algorithm is applied to the ERA5 reanalysis over 1940–2023 at 6 h intervals and a 0.25° × 0.25° horizontal resolution. The AR detection results are evaluated in terms of key AR characteristics. We anticipate this regionally refined global AR database will aid further understanding of ARs such as AR process studies, evaluation of AR simulations and predictions, and assessment of climate change impacts on ARs. All climate models use parameterizations and tuning in order to be accurate. The different parameterizations and tuning processes are the primary source of difference between models. Because models are tuned with present observations of Earth, they may not accurately simulate climates of other planets or palaeoclimate. A model with no adjustable parameter that happens to fit today's observations is probably more universal and should be more appropriate to model palaeoclimate. However, to our knowledge, such a model does not exist or is yet to be developed. This paper aims to improve a parameter-free radiative–convective model that computes a realistic temperature vertical profile to compute the water cycle, giving a value on average tropical precipitation. Although it is known that the radiative transfer constrains the order of magnitude of precipitation, no parameter-free model has yet been able to compute precipitation. Atmospheric aerosol in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and its surroundings has attracted significant scientific interest in recent decades due to its notable impacts on regional climatic and cryospheric changes, ecological and environmental security, and the hydrological cycle. However, our understanding of the atmospheric aerosol in this remote region is highly limited by the scarcity of available datasets owing to the extremely harsh natural conditions. This challenge has been mitigated in recent decades by establishing field observatories at typical sites within the TP and its surroundings. A continuous project initiated in 2015 aims to explore the properties and sources of atmospheric aerosols, as well as their regional differences, through multiple short-term intensive observations obtained across this vast region utilizing a suite of high-time-resolution online instruments. This paper presents a systematic and hourly scale dataset of aerosol physicochemical and optical properties at eight sites across the TP and its surroundings that is derived from the project. It includes size-resolved chemical compositions of submicron aerosols, high-resolution mass spectra and sources of organic aerosols, size distributions of particle number concentrations, particle light-scattering and light-absorption coefficients, particle light absorptions attributed to different carbonaceous substances including black carbon and brown carbon, and number concentrations of cloud condensation nuclei. In brief, atmospheric aerosols in these remote sites were all well mixed and highly aged, reflecting their dominant regional transport sources. However, the southern TP region exhibited high contributions of carbonaceous organic aerosols, neutralized bulk submicron aerosols, and a relatively high light-absorption capacity, whereas in the northern TP region, secondary inorganic species were the main contributors to the overall acidic submicron aerosols. Beyond providing insights into the regional differences in aerosol sources and properties across the TP and its surroundings, the datasets will also benefit simulations of aerosol radiative forcing and evaluations of interactions among different Earth system components in numerical models for this region. Precipitation is the basic component of the Earth's water cycle. Obtaining high-resolution and high-precision precipitation data is of great significance. This paper establishes a precipitation retrieval model based on a random forest classification and regression model during the day and at night with FY-4B/AGRI Level1 data on China from July to August 2022. To evaluate the retrieval effect of the model, the GPM IMERG product is used as a reference, and the retrieval results are compared against those of the FY-4B/AGRI operational precipitation product. In addition, the retrieval results are analyzed according to different underlying surfaces. The results showed that compared with the FY-4B/AGRI operational precipitation product, the retrieval model can better identify precipitation and capture precipitation areas of light rain, moderate rain, heavy rain and torrential rain. Among them, the probability of detection (POD) of the day model increased from 0.328 to 0.680, and the equitable threat score (ETS) increased from 0.252 to 0.432. The POD of the night model increased from 0.337 to 0.639, and the ETS score increased from 0.239 to 0.369. Meanwhile, the precipitation estimation accuracy of the day model increased by 38.98% and that of the night model increased by 40.85%. Our results also showed that due to the surface uniformity of the ocean, the model can identify precipitation better on the ocean than on the land. Our findings also indicated that for the different underlying surfaces of the land, there is no significant difference in each evaluation index of the model. This is a strong argument for the universal applicability of the model. Notably, the results showed that, especially for more vegetated areas and areas covered by water, the model is capable of estimating precipitation. In conclusion, the precipitation retrieval model that is proposed herein can better determine precipitation regions and estimate precipitation intensities compared with the FY-4B/AGRI operational precipitation product. Soil moisture (SM) is an important parameter in water cycle research. Rapid and accurate monitoring of SM is critical for hydrological and agricultural applications, such as flood detection and drought characterization. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) uses L-band microwave signals as carriers, which are particularly sensitive to SM and suitable for monitoring it. In recent years, with the development of Global Navigation Satellite System–Reflectometry (GNSS-R) technology and data analysis methods, many studies have been conducted on GNSS-R SM monitoring, which has further enriched the research content. However, current GNSS-R SM inversion methods mainly rely on auxiliary data to reduce the impact of non-target parameters on the accuracy of inversion results, which limits the practical application and widespread promotion of GNSS-R SM monitoring. In order to promote further development in GNSS-R SM inversion research, this paper aims to comprehensively review the current status and principles of GNSS-R SM inversion methods. It also aims to identify the problems and future research directions of existing research, providing a reference for researchers. Firstly, it introduces the characteristics, usage scenarios, and research status of different GNSS-R SM observation platforms. Then, it explains the mechanisms and modeling methods of various GNSS-R SM inversion research methods. Nowadays, there is a great deal of interest in the development of practical optimization models and intelligent solution algorithms for solving disassembly-line balancing problems. Based on the importance of energy efficiency of product disassembly and the trend for green remanufacturing, this paper develops a new optimization model for the energy-efficient disassembly-line balancing problem where the goal is to minimize the energy consumption generated during the disassembly-line operations. Since the proposed model is a complex optimization problem known as NP-hard, this study develops an improved metaheuristic algorithm based on the water cycle algorithm as a recently developed successful metaheuristic inspired by the natural water cycle phenomena of diversion, rainfall, confluence, and infiltration operations. A local search operator is added to the main algorithm to improve its performance. The proposed algorithm is validated by the exact solver and compared with other state-of-the-art and recent metaheuristic algorithms. A case study in a turbine reducer with different parameters is solved to show the applicability of this paper. Finally, our results confirm the high performance of the proposed improved water cycle algorithm and the efficiency of our sensitivity analyses during some sensitivity analyses. Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) plantations cover large and continuously increasing areas of humid tropical lowlands. Landscapes dominated by oil palms usually consist of a mosaic of mono-cultural, homogeneous stands of varying age, which may be heterogeneous in their water use characteristics. However, studies on the water use characteristics of oil palms are still at an early stage and there is a lack of knowledge on how oil palm expansion will affect the major components of the hydrological cycle. To provide first insights into hydrological landscape-level consequences of oil palm cultivation, we derived transpiration rates of oil palms in stands of varying age, estimated the contribution of palm transpiration to evapotranspiration, and analyzed the influence of fluctuations in environmental variables on oil palm water use. We studied 15 two- to 25 year old stands in the lowlands of Jambi, Indonesia. A sap flux technique with an oil palm specific calibration and sampling scheme was used to derive leaf-, palm- and stand-level water use rates in all stands under comparable environmental conditions. Additionally, in a two- and a 12 year old stand, eddy covariance measurements were conducted to derive evapotranspiration rates. Water use rates per leaf and palm increased 5-fold from an age of two years to a stand age of approx. 10 years and then remained relatively constant. A similar trend was visible, but less pronounced, for estimated stand transpiration rates of oil palms; they varied 12-fold, from 0.2 mm day-1 in a 2 year old to 2.5 mm day-1 in a 12 year old stand, showing particularly high variability in transpiration rates among medium-aged stands. Confronting sap flux and eddy-covariance derived water fluxes suggests that transpiration contributed 8% to evapotranspiration in the 2 year old stand and 53% in the 12 year old stand, indicating variable and substantial additional sources of evaporation, e.g. from the soil, the ground vegetation and from trunk epiphytes. Diurnally, oil palm transpiration rates were characterized by an early peak between 10 and 11 a.m.; there was a pronounced hysteresis in the leaf water use response to changes in vapor pressure deficit for all palms of advanced age. On the day-to-day basis this resulted in a relatively low variability of oil palm water use regardless of fluctuations in vapor pressure deficit and radiation. We conclude, that oil palm dominated landscapes show some spatial variations in (evapo)transpiration rates, e.g. due to varying age-structures, but that the temporal variability of oil palm transpiration is rather low. Stand transpiration rates of some studied oil palm stands compared to or even exceed values reported for different tropical forests, indicating a high water use of oil palms under certain site or management conditions. Our study provides first insights into the eco-hydrological characteristics of oil palms as well as a first estimate of oil palm water use across a gradient of plantation age.
