Abstract

Studies carried out by ORSTOM on the influence of man on hydrological processes concerned three facets: transformation of forested ecosystems into simplified ecosystems (orange grove or other cultivations), urbanization, and development of cultivated areas in the savannah zone. The experience gained in the study of a great number of representative basins leads to the identification of specific aspects of field work, the data processing and final analysis. Two examples are given concerning a set of three forested experimental basins in the Ivory Coast and a set of 10 experimental basins in the forests of French Guyana: a dense network of raingauges, semi-automatic processing of climatologieal and hydrological data and utilization of the comparison of the parameters of rainfall-runoff models for the detection of the influence of man instead of the direct comparison of data are the most interesting characteristics. The interpretation is facilitated by joint tests with mini-sprinklers on plots.
