Abstract: Freeze concentration is one of the methods to concentrate solution by making pure ice in the solution. In general, the ratio of condensation is focused on, and so the research on the concentration captured in ice is very limited. However, quality improvement of eliminating impurities from wastewater is a very important task. In this study, the difference of initial morphology of ice was focused on and the influence on the freeze concentration was studied. It was found that the concentration of solute captured in ice was in the following order, from bigger value, multi-crystal ice, a single crystal ice with growth direction in a-axis and a single crystal ice with growth direction in c-axis. It was clarified that the ratio of concentration between the solute captured in ice and the solute in the mother solution varied from 1/10 to 1/250, depending on the crystal orientation of the ice. Abstract: Heterogeneous nucleation of water was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. Solid with fcc (111) surface was placed at the bottom of a cell consisting of 864 water molecules. ST2 model with NPT ensemble was used. The pressure and temperature were set to be 0.1MPa and 275K, respectively. The interaction between water and the solid was based on the equations proposed by Spohr. Exception was made on the lattice constant which was slightly modified to fit with that for ice structure. The shape of the solid surface was considered. It was found that the only one layer of water molecules was adsorbed in a case of a flat surface, whereas ice nucleation occurred by removing some of the atoms from the surface. Spohr''s interaction was also modified so that the dipole moment of water became anti-ferroelectric. It was found that the modification increased the ice growth, further. The effect of lattice constant of solid on nucleation was also investigated. It was found that the variation on lattice constant with a few percent from that of ice was acceptable for nucleation, especially on shrinking side. On expanding side, however, it gave some gaps for water molecules to fit in other than that for ice structure, and it prevented the growth of ice. Hence, a guideline for the selection of ice nucleus material was obtained. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In order to clarify the effects of electric charge on freezing of supercooled water, experiments were carried out. Two kinds of shapes were used for tips of electrodes. One was the sharp end surface. The other was the flat end surface. Aluminum was selected as the material. Water sample was kept in a test tube and cooled down at a constant cooling rate. When the water sample was maintained under a supercooling state, an electric charge was applied to the water sample with a small electric current. The degree of supercooling and the electric current were measured, continuously. Then the degree of supercooling at freezing was determined. It was found that the effects of electric charge were distinct according to the shapes of electrodes. The degree of supercooling at freezing was the lower in the case of flat end surface of the anode than that in the case of sharp end surface of the anode. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The purpose of this research was to investigate the ice growth of a single crystal in three dimensions. Three-dimensional pattern of ice crystal growth in supercooled water was observed using Mach–Zehnder spectro-interferometer. Temperature was varied from −0.3 to −1.6 °C. It was found that the ice crystal began to grow as a single crystal at the tip of the capillary tube and propagated freely in supercooled water. Time variation of the shape of dendrite on a–c plane was obtained. It was found that half parabola fits the shape very closely, and the coefficient of squared term, a, of a quadratic function was calculated. The coefficient, a varied in time but at quasi steady state it was found to be depending mostly upon the degree of supercooling. Furthermore, the growth velocity in c-axis at the flat surface was calculated from the thickness measured. It was found that the velocity in c-axis is independent of the degree of supercooling but depends upon time, in other words, the thickness in c-axis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The direct contact melting of a porous material is investigated experimentally and analytically. The phase change material (PCM) is made of fine ice particles of a nearly uniform diameter, which is changed as a parameter. In the analysis, two models are proposed. One is calculated as the direct contact melting of a monolithic sample and another is treated as an assembly of the direct contact melting of the individual particles. As a result, it was found that the heat flux increased with the diameter, due to increase of permeability in a case of small diameter. But, in a case of large diameter, the heat flux decreased as the particle diameter increased because the direct contact melting occurred independently for the individual particles. Abstract: A calculation method to define the latent heat of fusion of ice in aqueous solution in the situation of the variation in the ice packing factor being infinitesimal is proposed. The calculation of the latent heat considers the effects of dilution and freezing-point depression, and the latent heat was calculated for five actual solutions, ethanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, NaCl and NaNO3 solutions. Additionally, experiments in which ice was added to the five solutions were conducted to compare with the results of the calculations. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis was performed and the measurements and calculated values compared with respect to the specific enthalpy of the ice/solution mixture. Finally, since the values obtained by the measurements and calculations are in good agreement, the calculating method proposed in this study has proven to be adequate. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this study, latent heat of fusion of ice in aqueous solutions was measured to understand latent heat of fusion of ice slurries. Propylene glycol, ethylene glycol, ethanol, NaCl and NaNO3 solutions were used as aqueous solutions. For measurements, pure ice was placed into solution, and temperature variations of the solution due to melting of ice were measured. Effective latent heat of fusion was calculated using an energy balance equation. Concentration of the solution varied due to ice melting, and dilution heat was considered. Therefore, latent heat of fusion of ice in aqueous solutions was predicted by considering the effects of dilution and freezing-point depression. We found that effective latent heat of fusion of ice decreased with increasing concentration of the solution, and effective latent heat of fusion was derived from latent heat of fusion of pure ice, effects of freezing-point depression, and dilution heat.
