Presented is a review of the radiative properties of ice clouds from three perspectives: light scattering simulations, remote sensing applications, and broadband radiation parameterizations appropriate for numerical models. On the subject of light scattering simulations, several classical computational approaches are reviewed, including the conventional geometric-optics method and its improved forms, the finite-difference time domain technique, the pseudo-spectral time domain technique, the discrete dipole approximation method, and the T-matrix method, with specific applications to the computation of the single-scattering properties of individual ice crystals. The strengths and weaknesses associated with each approach are discussed. With reference to remote sensing, operational retrieval algorithms are reviewed for retrieving cloud optical depth and effective particle size based on solar or thermal infrared (IR) bands. To illustrate the performance of the current solar- and IR-based retrievals, two case studies are presented based on spaceborne observations. The need for a more realistic ice cloud optical model to obtain spectrally consistent retrievals is demonstrated. Furthermore, to complement ice cloud property studies based on passive radiometric measurements, the advantage of incorporating lidar and/or polarimetric measurements is discussed. The performance of ice cloud models based on the use of different ice habits to represent ice particles is illustrated by comparing model results with satellite observations. A summary is provided of a number of parameterization schemes for ice cloud radiative properties that were developed for application to broadband radiative transfer submodels within general circulation models (GCMs). The availability of the single-scattering properties of complex ice habits has led to more accurate radiation parameterizations. Ice clouds influence the climate system by changing the radiation budget and large-scale circulation. Therefore, climate models need to have an accurate representation of ice clouds and their radiative effects. In this paper, new broadband parameterizations for ice cloud bulk scattering properties are developed for severely roughened ice particles. The parameterizations are based on a general habit mixture that includes nine habits (droxtals, hollow/solid columns, plates, solid/hollow bullet rosettes, aggregate of solid columns, and small/large aggregates of plates). The scattering properties for these individual habits incorporate recent advances in light-scattering computations. The influence of ice particle surface roughness on the ice cloud radiative effect is determined through simulations with the Fu-Liou and the GCM version of the Rapid Radiative Transfer Model (RRTMG) codes and the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Atmosphere Model (CAM, version 5.1). The differences in shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) radiative effect at both the top of the atmosphere and the surface are determined for smooth and severely roughened ice particles. While the influence of particle roughening on the single-scattering properties is negligible in the LW, the results indicate that ice crystal roughness can change the SW forcing locally by more than 10 W m−2 over a range of effective diameters. The global-averaged SW cloud radiative effect due to ice particle surface roughness is estimated to be roughly 1-2 W m−2. The CAM results indicate that ice particle roughening can result in a large regional SW radiative effect and a small but nonnegligible increase in the global LW cloud radiative effect. The representation of mixed-phase cloud optical properties in models is a critical problem in cloud modeling studies. Ice and liquid water co-existing in a cloud layer result in significantly different cloud optical properties from those of liquid water and ice clouds. However, it is not clear as to how mixed-phase cloud optical properties are affected by various microphysical factors, including the effective particle size, ice volume fraction, and ice particle shape. In this paper, the optical properties (extinction efficiency, scattering efficiency, single scattering albedo, and asymmetry factor) of mixed-phase cloud were calculated assuming externally and internally mixed cloud particle models in a broad spectral range of 0.2–100 μm at various effective particle diameters and ice volume fraction conditions. The influences of various microphysical factors on optical properties were comprehensively examined. For the externally mixed cloud particles, the shapes of ice crystals were found to become more important as the ice volume fraction increases. Compared with the mixed-phase cloud with larger effective diameter, the shape of ice crystals has a greater impact on the optical properties of the mixed-phase cloud with a smaller effective diameter (<20 μm). The optical properties calculated by internally and externally mixed models are similar in the longwave spectrum, while the optical properties of the externally mixed model are more sensitive to variations in ice volume fraction in the solar spectral region. The bulk scattering phase functions were also examined and compared. The results indicate that more in-depth analysis is needed to explore the radiative properties and impacts of mixed-phase clouds. Electromagnetic wave scattering by ice particles is commonly modeled by defining representative habits, including droxtals, columns, plates, and aggregates, although actual particles in the atmosphere can be even much more complex. In this study, we examined a superspheroidal approximation method for modeling electromagnetic wave scattering by ice crystals. Superspheroid can be associated with a shape index (SI) defined by the particle volume and average projected area. Corresponding to realistic ice crystals, suitable superspheroid models with the same SI (that means, identical volume and average projected area) and aspect ratio can be identified as surrogates for optical property calculations. We systematically compared the optical properties of ice crystals and superspheroids at 33 microwave bands in the range of 3–640 GHz and at three representative visible or infrared wavelengths (0.66, 2.13, and 11 μm). It was found that the single-scattering properties of compact ice crystal habits and their superspheroidal model particles were quite close. For an aggregate with sparse distribution of elements, a superspheroid model produces relatively large errors because the aspect ratio may not be sufficient to describe a particle shape.
