Objective: To determine the prevalence of cheiloscopic patterns in Pakistani population. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at Post Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI), Lahore, Capital diagnostic Centre CDC Islamabad, HITEC Taxilla for a duration of 12 months from 1 September 2021 to 31 August 2022. Materials and Methods: The lip prints of 320 males and females were taken by applying lip shades and then cellophane tapes (2 inches). They were transferred to an A4 sheet (white A4 ROCO Premium 80g copy papers) and then observed with magnifying hand lenses Deluxe magnifier (70mm diameter). The data was analyzed by IBM SPSS statistics 27.0. Chi square test was applied and a p value of ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The results showed differences in all individuals in both lip prints. The predominant lip pattern was type III, observed in 159 (99.4%) male participants while it was observed in all the female participants. Type I' observed in 37 (23.1%) female participants and IV are greater in females 160(100%) than males. Type II (was) greater in males 152 (95.0%) than females. Conclusion: Lip prints are useful tool that can be used as biometric markers in dentistry and forensic odontology.

Materials and Methods: Lips of 75 males, 75 females, and 30 twins were studied in various quadrants. In addition, the pattern in the middle 10 mm of the lower lip was also evaluated to note the pattern distribution and dominance of the type of pattern in different genders. Lip print patterns in five families across three generations (eight members each of the same family) were observed for the existence of inheritance of patterns from their ancestors. Results: Among males and females, the most common pattern in the middle 10 mm of the lower lip is Type III (34.66%) and Type IV (32%), respectively. In the middle 10 mm of the lower lip, 33.33% of twins have similar lip patterns but with differences in its arrangements. The result showed different lip print patterns even in twins and among the members of the same family across three generations, with some similar patterns which suggesting hereditary influences in lip prints. Conclusion: In the present, we can see that lip prints are unique and permanent for every human being even among twins and individuals of the same family.

Cheiloscopic examinations have long been conducted, and many scientists have reported the usefulness of cheiloscopy for personal identification with a characteristic and individual pattern of furrows on the vermilion lip. For almost 40 years, research conducted in Poland has determined the patterns of these furrows and the separation and development of their individual features. This was the basis for forming expert opinions and presenting them in court as evidence. In Poland, cheiloscopic expertise is performed and the results of precise procedures that are accredited and assessed serve as evidence. Although the legal system in Poland (continental system) is completely different from the American system, cheiloscopic expertise was also assessed in detail according to the American standards of evidence. This narrative review presents the problem of cheiloscopic expertise as a scientific and practical issue and provides a brief historical overview of this field and the foundations of the Polish cheiloscopic identification method. We conclude that Poland has sufficient historical background and a robust development of cheiloscopy in the field on a scientific and legal basis; however, due to its reports being in the Polish language, its absence from the most relevant specialized literature, or simply a lack of cooperation between countries and experts, the country has unfairly been left out of the discussion. We believe that a new look at the Polish contribution to lip print identification is necessary to reinsert this topic into the current discussion of a new identification paradigm. Introduction: Cheiloscopy is one of the investigative methods that utilises the anatomy and morphology of lips to identify individuals by their lip prints. Lip prints are a distinctive pattern made up of ridges and grooves on the labial mucosa, or sulci labiorum; cheiloscopy is the study of such patterns. Material and Methods: The study group comprised of 50 males and 50 females aged between 18 and 25 years in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU, Aligarh for a period of 1 year i.e., from August 2021 to September 2022. Results: Each individual lips were divided into 4 regions- upper right, upper left, lower right, and lower left and a total of 400 lip regions (100x4) were assessed for 6 types of lip groove patterns- Type I, Type I', Type II, Type III, Type IV, and Type V as per the Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification. The most common type of lip print pattern in males was Type III (32.5%) while in females it was Type II (36%). Its importance in forensic medicine was brought to light when its association was found with the distribution of finger patterns. Thus, few studies exist proving the relationship between dactyloscopy and blood groups. Cheiloscopy on other hand is the study of the irregularities present on the lips forming a unique arrangement called the prints of the lip. Aim: Our paper aims at elucidating any unique combination if any that exists between prints on lips, prints of fingers, and blood grouping in a specific population, which might help in the identification of an individual. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 subjects of age varying from 15 to 40 years were included in the study. Subjects comprised of 50 males and 50 females. Introduction: The human lip holds a considerable variation in the groove pattern and have been used as a tool for identification as commonly found on many surfaces (cups, glasses, cigarette butts, etc.). This study was done to identify the pattern among the population and also to evaluate the relevance of the impression left on different surfaces with the standard lip prints using superimposition technique by Adobe Photoshop 7.0. Material and Methods: The present study is comprised of 100 subjects of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh between 18-30 years. Results: The predominant lip print patterns in male subjects are (TYPE I') followed by (TYPE III) whereas in female subjects, it is (TYPE II) and (TYPE I') and (TYPE V) is the least and rarely found in both of the male/female samples also white clay cups had shown highest percentage of matching with first attempt prints, while steel tumblers had the lowest. Similarly the results were observed during the second attempt. Conclusion: The present study showed that the lip prints have a great potential to be used as an added measure in sex determination. Aim The present study was conducted to assess gender identification and this can be used as a reliable tool in the identification of an individual at any judicial process. Materials and Methods This study comprised of 82 dental students (42 females and 40 males) with age ranging from 19 to 21 years. Lip prints were recorded with the help of a cellophane tape strip and analysed according to Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification criteria. Results The mean age distribution among males was 20.07 ± 0.81 where as in females it was 19.78 ± 0.73. Distribution of different patterns in upper lip vertical patterns was very prominent when compared with reticular, branched and intersecting. Distribution of different patterns in lower lip branched patterns was very prominent when compared with reticular and verticals. Comparing between upper lip with lower lip pattern wise there was no statistically significant. Compared different patterns in relation with lower lip the values showing stastically significant (p≤0.05). Summary and Conclusions Lip prints or Cheiloscopy can be used an individual identification. The results obtained in our study do not show any evidence that cheiloscopy can be used as gender identification. Cheiloscopy (quiloscopy) is a method of identification of a person based on characteristic arrangement of lines appearing on the red part of lips. Lip prints are unique to an individual, and persist in their characteristics over a period of years. They are like fingerprints reliable method for identification. The aim of the study was to find out various patterns of lip prints and the commonest pattern observed in both males and females. Materials and method: The study was carried out on 200 individuals residing in suburban area in Dakshina Kannada District, of ages ranging from 12-60yrs of both sexes after taking consent. The present study was carried out from 2013 to 2015.The materials used were dark colour lipstick, bond paper, cello tape. Results: The common pattern of lip print observed was Type I in the entire study population in both males and females. In Dakshina Kannada however it was not statistically proved significant. Personal identification is of vital importance in forensic odontology for ethical, humanitarian and criminal enquiries. The applicability of Cheiloscopy ( study of pattern of lip print), one of the easiest tools available in individual and medicolegal identification, is an area of extensive research in recent years. With the objective to investigate the uniqueness of lip patterns in relation to gender and blood groups, this study was conducted on 100 subjects, which included 50 males and 50 females. The lip prints obtained were studied by applying Suzuki and Tsuchihashi’s classification.Type 2 (37%) was the most common lip print type in males and Type 3 (38.5%) was the most common lip print type in females. The Lower lip print can help in gender determination. No significant statistical correlation was found between the lip print patterns and blood group. Along with the traditional methods of identification like fingerprint analysis,Cheiloscopy can also be helpful in the identification of a person.However, the utility of the same in forensic medicine still remains largely untapped and unacknowledged. Similar studies with larger sample sizes are required to obtain statistically significant reports thereby allowing a more impactful emergence of lip print patterns usage in forensic analysis. Introduction: Personal identification is becoming increasingly important not only in legal medicine but also in criminal investigation, identification and in Genetic Research. The grooves present on the lips are unique for every person. Cheiloscopy is a forensic investigation technique that deals with the identification based on lip traces. The aim of this study was to assess the specific lip print pattern for personal identification, its uniqueness among males and females and the reliability of the technique in suspect identification at the crime site. Materials and Methods: The study sample comprised 200 individuals (100 males and 100 females) aged between 10 and 50 years; dark-colored lipstick was applied uniformly on the lips and clear impressions of the lips were taken on the bond paper. The scanned lip-print image studied using Microsoft office picture manager. Fingerprints were analyzed by following the classification given by Suzuki and Tsuchihashi. Chi-square test and p-value of the samples were calculated. Results: The study revealed that the lip print patterns for each individual were unique and there was no peculiar pattern distribution among male and female subjects. Conclusion: Cheiloscopy is analogous to fingerprint analysis and can be used as a tool for individual identification along with dermatoglyphics. Background: Personal identification has an important role in forensic sciences. Lip print and thumb print can be used for personal identification since they are unique for individuals and do not change during the life of a person. Objective: To analyse predominant patterns of lip print in females and males, To analyse predominant patterns of finger print in females and males, To identify if there exists any correlation between lip prints and finger prints. Material and Method: A cross sectional study was conducted in Sathyabama Dental College among 500 individuals (250 females and 250 males) between age group of 18-40 years. Fingerprint and lip print of all the subjects were collected and compared, and the results were analyzed based on Micheal Kucken classification system for fingerprints and Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification for lip prints. Descriptive and inferential statistics were carried out. Level of significance was set as 0.05. Result: Reticular lip print pattern was found in majority (36.4%) of the males, whereas vertical grooves (29.6%) and branched grooves (29.6%) are common in females. Finger prints showed that loop pattern is more common in both males and females. Cheiloscopy is a forensic investigation technique that deals with the identification based on lip traces. Based upon the research, it was established that the arrangement of lines on the red part of human lips is unique for each human being. The present study is an attempt to determine the pattern of lip prints and evaluate its uniqueness in a sample of Naga population and also their association with print in the four quadrants of the lip. A total of 100 (15-40) years individuals were randomly selected. With the help of brush a layer of lipstick was applied on the lips of the subject. Following the basis of Tsuchihashi's classification the lip prints collected were studied. It was found that Type I' pattern was predominant among the studied subjects followed by Type I and Type III pattern while Type V pattern was the least frequent Lip pattern distribution in (all four quadrants) in both males and females of Nagas. It is found that no two or more persons had similar features of lip grooves. The frequency of repetition of the lip print pattern in successive quadrant is found to be high. Background: Lip prints are seen to remain the same for an individual throughout his/her life. Cheiloscopy can be used as an effective tool in the identification of the persons from pieces of evidence that may be left behind from lip prints. Aim and Objectives: The aim of the current research was to evaluate the predominant lip groove pattern among Calicut population, Kerala. Materials and Methods: The study involved 2112 individuals (1056 males and 1056 females) in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, KMCT Dental College, Calicut, Kerala. Lipstick was used to record the lip groove patterns and the patterns were visualized by magnifying lens after the institutional ethical clearance and informed consent from the individual. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS software 22.0. Results: Among the study population, Type 1', Type 1, Type 4, and Type 5 were found to be common lip groove patterns. Males showed predominance on Type 1' and Type 1 lip groove patterns, whereas females showed predominance on Type 4 and Type 5 lip groove patterns. The results were similar when analyzed on upper and lower lips separately on males and females. Conclusion: Cheiloscopy is a reliable tool in personal identification and gender determination of an individual. The geographical prevalence of lip groove patterns was reported in the current research and is added to the database of the anthropological data. Introduction: Cheiloscopy and dactyloscopy have long been the most commonly used methods for forensic investigations. Orthodontists perform numerous diagnostic procedures, which include radiographs, photographs and impressions of the teeth and palate for the evaluation of malocclusion. The data recorded by them provide immense information about a patient. Fingerprints, lip prints and palatal rugae have been considered the most stable, reliable, imitable, convenient, cost-effective and time-friendly modes of investigating crime and other purposes. Aim: The main aim of this study is to correlate cheiloscopy, fingerprint pattern and palatoscopy to skeletal Class I sagittal jaw relationship and to include cheiloscopy, fingerprint pattern assessment and palatoscopy in routine orthodontic investigation procedures as an adjunct procedure in individual identification. Methods: Fingerprints, lip prints, palatal rugae pattern and lateral cephalograms of 37 skeletal Class I patients were obtained using standardized procedures. Results: In Class I skeletal malocclusion, the maximum number of patients exhibited ulnar loop dermal pattern, Type 1 and Type 2 lip patterns and a wavy rugae pattern (Kapali et al. primary classification). Conclusion: Orthodontists prepare various antemortem records for diagnostic purposes, i.e., photographs, the impression of the teeth and palate, lateral cephalograms, orthopantomograms and hand-wrist radiographs. If orthodontists recorded additional data of finger and lip prints, the archives of an orthodontist would be of tremendous profit to forensic sciences in individual identification. Background: The study of lip prints, is commonly applied in forensic odontology and it is known as cheiloscopy. The term cheiloscopy was derived from Greek words, in which "cheilos" means lip and "scopy" means to examine. In general, cheiloscopy is define as a method of identifying an individual based on the arrangement of lines seen on the red part of the lips or a science dealing with the various line appearing on the red part of the lips. The pattern of wrinkles and grooves that are present on the lips has distinct characteristic features of an individual which are almost similar to the fingerprints. It also will not change throughout the life. Therefore, it can be used for personal identification and sex determination. Aim: To investigate lip print pattern in males and females and to evaluate them between Malaysian and Indian population. Materials and Method: There were 40 participants of both gender. 20 of them are from the Malaysian population and another 20 people are from the Indian population. Each participant was instructed to clean their lips with a clean white cloth, before taking the lip print. This was followed by the application of dark coloured lip stick on lips by using the lip stick applicator. Cellophane tape was used to take the negative impression of the lip pattern. The glued portion of the cellophane tape was placed on the lips by giving a light pressure beginning from the centre of the lips till the corner of the mouth. Then, the impression was transferred to a clean white paper and seen under the magnifying glass. Results: Type I lip pattern was commonly seen in Indian population, followed by type III, II and IV. Whereas for Malaysian population, type III was most common followed by type I, II and IV. There was significant difference between both population. In this study, it showed that type I was the most common lip print pattern seen in both Indian and Malaysian population for females. Whereas for male, type III was more common in Malaysian population, and both type III and IV were more common in Indian population. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in both population according the general distribution of lip print pattern. There was no correlation or similarity of lip print patterns between each participants in both population. Thus, cheiloscopy can be used for sex determination and also personal identification. Background: Identification of the suspect, living or dead with the help of physical charachteristics play a vital role in forensic science. Improved methods of gender determination and personal identification are important in solving criminal cases. Cheiloscopy and dactyloscopy have been proved to be of use in personal identification. The present study aims to evaluate correlation of Cheiloscopy and Dermatoglyphics in gender determination Materials and Method: The study was carried out from January 2017 to January 2019 on 2112 individuals (1056 males and 1056 females) aged from 15 to 60 years in KMCT Dental College, Calicut. For lip print analysis Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification was followed. For finger print analysis impression of all the fingers were taken. For analysis, the images were cropped and abode photoshop software was used. Results: Type 1 and 1' lip groove patterns were found to be predominant among males.Type 4 and Type 5 lip groove patterns were found to be predominant among females. Loop finger print patterns were found to be predominant among males.Whorl finger print patterns were found to be predominant among females. Positive correlation (+0.80) was found between loop finger print pattern and Type 1' lip print pattern in males which is statistically significant (p=0.003).Positive correlation (+0.75) was found between whorl finger print pattern and Type IV lip groove pattern in females which is statistically significant. Lip print pattern (LPP) is unique to each individual. For decades, forensic experts have used LPP for personal identification to solve criminal cases. However, studies investigating ethnic variation in LPP are scanty. Our study wanted to investigate variation in LPP between two ethnic groups, Oraon tribals and Bengalee Hindus, residing in West Bengal, India. A total of 280 participants included 112 Oraons and168 Bengalee Hindus of both. Prints were taken using dark shaded lipstick and transparent cellophane tape and recorded into white A4 sheet. Prints were divided into four quadrants and examined by magnifying glass. For analysis of results, classification of Suzuki and Tsuchihashi was followed. A p value of 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. It was observed that Type II pattern was dominant in first and second quadrants in both ethnic groups, irrespective of sex. Combination of Type II+III was found to be the most common pattern in males among both Oraons (16.2%) and Bengalee Hindus (12.2%) whereas in females Type II pattern (25.0%) among Oraons and Type III pattern among Bengalee Hindus (11.4%) was the most common. Chi square test showed statistically significant difference among females (p<0.05) and in third and fourth quadrants among males (p<0.01) of both ethnic groups. Our investigation clearly demonstrated sex and ethnic variations in LPP. Background: The wrinkles and grooves on the labial mucosa called sulci labiorum forms a characteristic pattern called as lip prints. The study of lip print is cheiloscopy it is used as an identification tool in the forensic department these days since lip prints are unique as fingerprints in each individual’s. Aim: The aim of the study was to compare the lip prints of North Indians and South Indians and to analyze its uniqueness. Materials and Methods: The study group consists of 100 people, which included both 50 North Indians and 50 South Indians. The subjects had no lesions on their lips and they were not sensitive to lipsticks. A single coat of lipstick was applied on the subject’s lips evenly, not too thick. The subjects were asked to keep their lips in a closed and resting state, and a strip of cellophane tape was used to take the lip print impression. The grooves and furrows in the impression were clearly examined using a magnifying glass, and the type of lip print was identified. The number of lines and furrows, length, branching, and combination was noted and recorded. Then, the lip prints were compiled, analyzed, and interpreted. Results: Lip prints are unique like our thumbprint and in correlation of lip prints among North Indians and South Indian, Type 2 was dominant in North Indian upper right lip; Type 1a was dominant in South Indian. Type 1a was dominant in both North Indian and South Indian upper left lip. Type 2 was dominant in both North Indian and South Indian lower right lip Type 2 was dominant in North Indian lower left lip; Type 1a was dominant in South Indian lower left lip. Conclusion: Lip prints are unique and it can be used for identification purposes. Among North Indians and South Indians, Type 2 and Type 1a were most predominant in both the population. Context (Background): Lips prints are unique and are a tool for personal identification.Aims: Indian population can be divided into different ethno-racial groups. In this study, we aimed at finding the most and the least prevalent lip print patterns in these groups and also to observe any similarities or differences that may exist in these groups in terms of lip print patterns.Settings and Design: Lip prints in 755 individuals categorized into different ethno-racial groups were studied.Materials and Methods: Brown- and pink-colored lipsticks, cellophane tape, and magnifying lens were used to record and study the lip prints.Results: Among all the three ethno-racial groups, Type I was the most prevalent lip print pattern observed. The least prevalent lip print pattern in all the three groups was Type IV. Inference/Conclusion: Lip prints hold potential as supplementary tools for identification where they can be recorded with ease. The observation and classification of lip print patterns in different ethno-racial groups not only provide some useful data but also open a new window to a field that can contribute extensively to criminal investigation and identification. Cheiloscopy is quite significant in forensic investigation like personal identification and sex determination. But unfortunately, crime detective agencies are still unaware of the importance of lip prints and are not being used in identification of criminals. Aim: To study different types of lip patterns in different quadrants of lip, their incidence in the given age group in relation to specific gender and uniqueness in personal identification. Materials and method: The study comprised of 150 subjects, aged 25-50 years from Chhattisgarh population, India. Lipstick was applied over the lip and lip impressions were taken on white bond paper with the help of cellophane tape and then visualized by magnifying lens. Analysis of lip prints were done according to Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification. Result and conclusion: It was found that type I was the most prevalent cheiloscopic pattern among both genders. The least common lip pattern was type IV among entire sample study. No gender wise distribution was observed among lip print patterns. Lip patterns are unique for every individual and no two prints are similar to each other. Emphasis to be given for further studies using standard methods to evaluate the lip prints. Background: In forensic identification, the mouth allows for a myriad of possibilities. Dental data is vastly used for positive identification of person, but nowadays other oral data such as palatal prints and lip prints are used for the process of identification, the object of which is to identify and register individuals for both civil and criminal purposes. Aim and Objective: To check whether there are any peculiar / common lip patterns among males and females and to establish lip prints as a tool for identification. Study Design: It's a cross sectional Prospective study. Method: It was conducted on the children who are studying in fourth standard to Tenth standard in the Government school at Pathancheru. 200 subjects were selected irrespective of their caste, religion, dietary habits & socio-economic status. Observation: Among males, it was found that intersected pattern was most common in compartments 1, 3 and 4, while the least common pattern in lip compartments 1, 2, was Undetermined. On evaluation of the lip prints of the females, compartments 1, 2 exhibited intersected pattern predominantly. However, in compartment 3 and 4, branched pattern was commonest. Conclusion: Lip prints are useful in personal identification and they differ from person to person even not similar in uniovular twins. Study showed that cellophane tape and lipstick can be easily used to retrieve lip prints. Lip print analysis is a process that can provides both qualitative and quantitative results. Background and objectives: Human identification is based on scientific principles, mainly involving estimation of age, sex, fingerprints, measurement of height, dental records. Just like these methods, lip prints can also be instrumental in identifying the sex which is vital for establishing the identity of an individual. The study of lip prints is known as cheiloscopy. The main objective of study was to find out accuracy of sex determination through lip prints. Method: The study was conducted on 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students of Azeezia medical college, Kollam. Subjects were 100 males and 100 females of the state of Kerala, aged between 18 and 25years. Details of the study were explained to the subjects and lip prints taken and analysed as per the Classification given by Tsuchihashi. Results: Type I was the most common lip print in total subjects and males. Type III predominated in females. Type I, I', II constituted majority of females. Type III, IV, V predominated in males. Conclusion: The results obtained in our study do not prove it to be an infallible method. But it still seems to open a small window to a vast unventured field. Among the various methods of identification, cheiloscopy is one of the most interesting emerging techniques. It is a method to establish the identity of a person based on the presence of grooves on the red part of human lips as various studies have revealed the unique nature of lip prints just like finger or footprints. Edmond Locard of France was the first to recommend the use of lip prints for individual identification. Since 1950, the Japanese has carried out extensive research in the matter. Lip prints at a scene of crime, apart from identification, may help to point as to the nature of crime, sex of the person involved, type of cosmetics used, habits or any pathological changes of lips. Credibility of lip prints as a human identification tool for evidential purposes is yet to be accepted by courts in India as literature reveals very little research done in this field. There is a need to review the various methods of recording and collection of the lip prints at the crime scene and also the means to develop the latent lip prints. Introduction: Lip prints, like fingerprints, are unique to an individual and can be easily recorded. Therefore, we compared direct and indirect lip print patterns in males and females of different age groups, studied the inter- and intraobserver bias in recording the data, and observed any changes in the lip print patterns over a period of time, thereby, assessing the reliability of lip prints as a forensic tool. Materials and Methods: Fifty females and 50 males in the age group of 15 to 35 years were selected for the study. Lips with any deformity or scars were not included. Lip prints were registered by direct and indirect methods and transferred to a preformed registration sheet. Direct method of lip print registration was repeated after a six-month interval. All the recorded data were analyzed statistically. Results: The predominant patterns were vertical and branched. More females showed the branched pattern and males revealed an equal prevalence of vertical and reticular patterns. There was an interobserver agreement, which was 95%, and there was no change in the lip prints over time. Indirect registration of lip prints correlated with direct method prints. Conclusion: Lip prints can be used as a reliable forensic tool, considering the consistency of lip prints over time and the accurate correlation of indirect prints to direct prints. Background: Personal identification plays an inevitable role in forensic investigation. Lip print is one of the evidences that can be left in the crime scene, which helps in identification purpose. Hence, the present study was undertaken to provide deeper inside view of use of cheiloscopy in personal identification, focusing on sex and age variability of lip print patterns in the population of Rajnandgaon city, Chhattisgarh, India. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 (100 males and 100 females) subjects of age 15-55 years, residing in different areas of Rajnandgaon city. The sex of the individual was determined as per the description given by Vahanwala et al. Frequency distribution and Chi-square test were used for data analysis by SPSS 16.0 V software. Results: The most common lip print pattern in entire population was Type I (27.5%). Very highly significant difference was found in the distribution of lip print patterns among males and females in the entire population, group I, and group III, respectively (P < 0.0001). The overall accuracy of cheiloscopy in sex determination was (high) 87.95%, 87.65%, 90.5%, and 80% in group 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. Conclusion: Thus, it can be concluded that lip prints can be used as one of the important forensic tools for personal identification on the basis of their age and gender variability among the populations. Abstract: Lip-print groove patterns have recently been verified as a unique parameter for identification. This study investigated the stability of lip-print patterns over time to validate their secure use in civil and criminal investigations. One hundred and sixteen female lip prints were analyzed and compared with the prints of the same subjects taken 3 years earlier. The old and new lower lip prints of each subject were examined for similarities in the groove patterns in different areas of the lip (lower right, lower middle and lower left), and a score for similarity was developed for the statistical analysis of the lower lip stability data. No significant difference in the frequency of pattern types was detected between old and new prints (P > 0.05). Statistically, 89.6% of subjects showed characteristic typical groove(s) in the lip area(s) of the old and corresponding new prints: 24.1% in the three areas, 48.3% in two areas and 17.2% in one area. This study proves the lasting stability of lip-print patterns over the years in Saudi females and recommends paying attention to the presence of characteristic typical grooves in these prints. Fingerprints are considered to be the most reliable criteria for personal identification. In the past decades, lip-print studies (Cheiloscopy) attracted the attention of many scientists as a new tool for human identification in both civil and criminal issues. The present study was undertaken to observe the correlation between lip prints and finger print pattern in sex determination and to determine the pattern predominance in a sample of 5000 individuals. The study was carried out in 5000 individuals in Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology of Maharishi Markandeshwar College of Dental Sciences and Research, M.M. University, Mullana. Of the participants, 2500 were males and 2500 females. Lip prints and finger prints of the right hand were collected then studied and analyzed statistically. For lip prints TSUCHIHASHIS Y. classification (1970) was followed; HENRYS classification(1897) was followed for finger prints. Whorls were of a high frequency in males, but females presented with a high frequency of loops. Type I, I', II lip print pattern was most predominant in females while Type III and Type IV was most predominant in males. The present study described in detail that for both males and females, the most predominant lip-print patterns showed an association with the respective predominant finger print patterns. The establishment of a database of Cheiloscopy and Dactyloscopyis recommended for all individuals in a certain locality, which could be used as a reference in civil litigations and criminal cases. Human identification is one of the most challenging sciences. Recently, study of lip prints has become slightly fashionable in forensic field. The aim of the present work is to determine the pattern of lip prints and evaluate its uniqueness in a sample of Egyptian population. The study included 955 subjects (2-65 years old). Lip prints were taken by direct rolling methods against hard background and each lip print was divided into six areas to be examined by magnifying hand lens. Thereafter, they were scanned and examined by the Microsoft office picture manager program. The results revealed that the lip print for each individual was unique and the complete vertical pattern was the commonest type among males and females living in Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt. Sex could not be differentiated from the lip print. It can be concluded that lip print analysis is an ancillary tool for personal identification especially in criminal investigations. Lip prints are thought to have the ability to distinguish individuals and, hence, have a potential use in human identification purposes. However, questions remain regarding their utility for sex determination. This study aimed to classify lip prints for different individuals in a Portuguese population and to determine whether sex differences exist. Lip prints of 25 females and 25 males were obtained using dark-colored lipstick and cellophane tape. Lip prints were analyzed using a magnifying lens and classified according to the Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification. A Type II pattern was found to be most common. A comparison of lip-print patterns between males and females showed results with a statistically significant difference: Type III pattern was most common in males, and a Type II pattern in females. Lip prints are unique to each individual. They remain the same throughout life and are uninfluenced by environmental changes, diseases and trauma. The present study was conducted at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, India among 200 randomly-selected medical students belonging to age group of 18–25 years. The sample consisted of 100 north Indians (50 males and 50 females) and 100 south Indians (50 males and 50 females). The lip prints were documented as per Suzuki's classification. Type II was the most commonly occurring lip print pattern and type V was the rarest. Type I and type I' patterns were more common in males and Type II, type III, type IV and type V patterns were more common in females. Type III and type IV patterns were predominant in north Indians while type II was predominant in south Indians. No significant relation exists between the lip prints and blood group pattern of an individual. Results of the study showed that lip prints are individualistic, and bears a relationship with sex and geographical distribution of the individual. Identification is the establishment of a person's individuality. Identification of an individual is a prerequisite for personal, social and legal reasons. Cheiloscopy is an upcoming tool for the identification of a person. Lip print of each and every person is unique. The present study was conducted to determine prominent lip print types in different age groups and in relation to sex . This study was conducted on 258 subjects residing in Kheda district, Gujarat which included 124 males and 134 females between the age group of 1 to 70 years. Lip prints were studied, using Suzuki's classification. The prominent type in each quadrant was noted and percentage was calculated. Study revealed that none of the lip prints matched each other. Introduction When fingerprint, DNA and post-mortem records are not available, lesser known techniques of palatoscopy and Cheiloscopy can throw light on individual identification. The present study was conducted to compare the Lip prints between the Tibetan population from Mundgod and the population of Belgaum and to find out the quadrant wise and gender-wise predilection of lip print patterns. Material and Methods Lip impressions were collected from 775 Tibetans from Mundgod and 764 subjects from the population of Belgaum city. A dark shaded lip stick was applied on the lips of the subjects and the impressions were taken on the sticking side of a cellophane tape and stuck on a white paper. The impressions were visualized using a magnifying lens and analyzed by Suzuki's classification. Findings The data was entered in Microsoft excel and analyzed using Chi square test. The Type I pattern was more common in males in the first and second quadrants. Type II pattern was more in the Tibetans than in the general population. Type III pattern was more common in males. It was seen more commonly in the Tibetans. Type IV pattern occurred more frequently in females in both the populations. The variability in occurrence of different types of lip prints in both the populations was statistically significant. Lip size of the Tibetans was larger than their counterparts from the general population. Conclusion Lip prints have a gender-wise as well as quadrant-wise predilection. Context: Lip prints are very useful in forensic investigation and personal identification. Like finger prints, even lip prints can be instrumental in identifying a person positively. Aims: Indians are closer to Mongoloids than to Caucasoids or Negroids as indicated by the phylogenetic tree. Most of the studies on lip prints are done in their own population. We have compared lip prints of Manipuris with other Indians (Aryans and Dravidians) who are both close to Mongoloid race and are genetically similar. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 students 50 males and 50 females were selected of whom 30 males and 30 females were of Aryan and Dravidian features and 20 males and 20 females showed the Mongol features. Study materials used were Red colored lipstick, Lip brush, Cellophane tape, White chart paper and Magnifying lens. The lip prints were analyzed by dividing them into eight compartments. Results: Analysis of lip prints showed that the most common and the least common pattern in both males and females (Aryans-Dravidians and Mongols) were the same, but the compartment wise distribution of the lip patterns was different. Conclusion: In the present study, it is established that there is no similarity of lip prints from one individual to another individual and between males and females. The external surface of lips has many elevations and depressions forming a characteristic pattern called lip prints, examination of which is known as cheiloscopy. The lip prints are unique and distinguishable for every individual like fingerprints. The use of lip prints for human identification was first suggested in 1950 and researches were carried out in 1960s and early 1970s, resuming in the last few years.
