The influence of counter-rotation between the inducer and impeller, along with a newly introduced system for their independent rotation on the pump cavitation characteristics, has been studied experimentally. Remarkably, this pump allows users to select between co-rotation and counter-rotation modes, providing significant operational adaptability. The high-speed camera is used to analyze vaporization structures and closely monitor the stability of the head pressure delivered by the pump during the cavitation testing phase. For both co-rotation and counter-rotation modes, different types of cavitation within the inducer and between the inducer and the impeller at three varied flow rates have been studied using image analysis. The results reveal improved cavitation performance and comparable efficiency at consistent pressure–flowrate combinations, emphasizing the advantages of counter-rotation across the three tested flow rates. In counter-rotation mode, the tangential velocity of the flow at the output of the inducer is opposite to that of the co-rotation mode. Consequently, the tangential velocity of the flow entering the impeller is reduced, leading to enhanced flow stability and increased pump pressure. The findings from image analysis demonstrate that the structure of cavitation varies between co-rotation and counter-rotation modes. The use of a counter-rotating rotor in turbomachines can be a solution to improve performances by allowing reduction in size and weight, especially compared to multistage configuration. The present study aims are to demonstrate another advantage of the counter-rotating rotors: their application to expand the operating range of centrifugal compressors toward extremely low flow rates based on an active control method. This method was performed on two different counter-rotating configurations. The principle of the active control method is to adjust independently the rotation speed of each rotor to push back the instability appearance. Experimental results show that reducing the rotation speed of the upstream-rotor while fixing the speed of the downstream rotor can push the instability phenomenon toward a lower mass flow rate while decreasing the pressure rise and efficiency. Co-rotating mode is applied to push further the stable region toward low mass flow rates allowing a significant extension of the operating range. The experimental results reveal that the map width is shifted by about 50% over the studied range toward a lower mass flow rate for both counter-rotating centrifugal compressors when using the control method. This can be achieved when the absolute value of the upstream-rotor speed is within the range of 48%–61% of the rotational speed of the downstream rotor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article introduces an innovative design for a centrifugal pump featuring an inducer that enables the independent rotation of both the inducer and the centrifugal impeller. Unlike conventional designs, this configuration allows for differential speeds and customizable rotation directions, including co-rotation and counter-rotation modes. These new capabilities offer numerous operational advantages. This study investigates the impact of the speed ratio between the inducer and the impeller on the pump's performance in both the co-rotation and counter-rotation modes. The results demonstrate that the independent rotation of the inducer expands the pump's operating range, while counter-rotation significantly enhances the generation of pressure and the pump's efficiency compared to co-rotation. These findings pave the way for the development of pumps that offer benefits such as a reduced size, reduced vibration, minimized energy consumption, and improved cavitation performance. Centrifugal compressors are widely used in many industrial fields such as automotive, aviation, aerospace. However, these turbomachines suffer instability phenomenon when the flow rate is too high or too low, called rotating stall and surge. These phenomena cause the operation failure, pressure fluctuations and vibrations of the thorough system. Numerous mechanical solutions have been presented to minimize these instabilities and expand the operating range towards low-flow rates like active control of the flow path, variable inlet guide vane and casing treatment. Currently, our team has developed a novel compressor composed of a twin-impeller powered by autonomous systems. We notice the performance improvement and instabilities suppression of this compressor experimentally. In this paper, an active control method is introduced by controlling the speed and rotation direction of the impellers to expand the operating range. A CFD study is then conducted to analysis flow morphology and thermodynamic characteristics based on the experimental observations at three special points. A process that enables us to improve the design of 2D centrifugal and helico-centrifugal pumps is presented. First of all, the definition of the impeller geometry as well as the analysis of its global performances are carried out starting from the mean streamline method (1D), based at the same time on ideal models and experimental correlations. A second stage of optimisation is achieved from a quasi three-dimensional (Q3D) method, by studying the meridional flow and blade-to-blade flow. Finally, 3D flow solution is performed by CFD tools. Nowadays, we have a group of tools which help the designers improve the performance of new machines. These digital tools are built around two computer programs, HELIOX developed for design and performance analysis in any centrifugal and mixed flow pumps equipped with volute or deswirl vanes, and also the module REMIX that gathers the meridional flow analysis and the simplified blade-to-blade one. To validate this procedure, a centrifugal machine with a volute (NS32) was modified and studied with it, and the results were simultaneously compared with the previous trial runs and with the software CFX-BladeGEN+ and CFX-TASCflow. Turbomachinery with double counter-rotating impellers offers more degrees of freedom in the choice of design and control parameters compared to conventional machines. For these innovative machines, the literature review shows that more publications concerning axial type turbomachines are available than centrifugal ones. This work deals with a design and experimental performance analysis, applied to two counter-rotating impellers of a centrifugal compressor "CRCC". CRCC was designed with a specifically developed tool based on mean-line approach coupled with optimization algorithms and a stream-curvature through-flow method to satisfy the design criteria. This paper presents an experimental validation of the CRCC design tool and its performances against the baseline "SR", composed of one centrifugal impeller and a volute for which experimental data are available. CRCC numeric simulations are also validated by experimental data. For a fair comparison between CRCC and SR, the same volute is used for both configurations. The CRCC studied here includes a first conventional impeller with an axial inlet and a radial outlet, while the second impeller is parametrically designed and can be considered a rotating bladed diffuser with a radial inlet and outlet. The obtained results show that CRCC can deliver a pressure rise increase of two compared to SR, along with an increase of isentropic efficiency and also validate the design method of this novel layout.
