Like conventional two-switch leg converters, the three-switch leg converters also have short-circuit risks and a dangerous shoot-through current is generated if switches of the same leg are turned on simultaneously. In this article, a new dual-buck structure is proposed for three-switch leg converters. The proposed structure is reliable because of no shoot-through concerns and high quality of output waveforms can be obtained due to the reduction in pulsewidth modulation deadtime. Unlike the conventional dual-buck three-switch leg that uses many passive components such as four current limiting inductors and three external diodes, the new dual-buck three-switch leg uses only one current limiting inductor with two external diodes. To verify the performance, the proposed three-switch legs are used in single-phase dual-output inverter and detailed theoretical analysis, simulation, and experiments are performed. Both continuous and discontinuous modulation schemes are applied and it has been figured out that discontinuous modulation scheme can improve the dc-link voltage utilization in the common-frequency mode of operation. This article proposes a single-phase five-level current source inverter with an inductor cell based on the switching-cell (SC) structure. Compared to the conventional inverter, the proposed structure has no open-circuit problem; thus, its reliability is greatly enhanced. The overlap-time inserted in the driving signals can also be minimized to improve the output waveform quality. The proposed inverter's operation is analyzed herein, and the design guideline of SC capacitors is discussed. In addition, the SC extension for the n-level topology is provided. The traditional neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter has short-circuit problem. The risk of short-circuit can be decreased by using dead-time in the switching signals. However, the dead-time decreases the achievable output voltage and causes distortion in the waveforms. To overcome the short-circuit problem, dual-buck NPC (DB-NPC) and split-inductor NPC (SI-NPC) inverters have been researched. However, the voltage stress of the two external diodes in the DB-NPC inverter is higher. On the other hand, the SI-NPC inverter has a problem of generating huge voltage spikes in the dead-time, which can destroy the semiconductor devices. In addition, the SI-NPC inverter cannot provide reactive power. This article presents a family of NPC inverters consisting of single-phase, three-phase, and cascaded inverters. The proposed inverters have no short-circuit and dead-time issues, therefore no high voltage and current spikes are caused. Also, the dead-time in the switching signals can be minimized. As a result, the magnitude of the output waveforms can be increased, and quality can be improved. Unlike the DB-NPC inverter, the voltage stress of all the semiconductor in the proposed inverter is lower, and unlike the SI-NPC inverter the proposed inverter provides reactive power. In this article, the proposed three-level NPC inverter is analyzed, designed, and tested. The voltage stress of the semiconductor devices in the proposed inverter is half of the source voltage, whereas in the conventional DB-NPC inverter the voltage stress of the two external diodes is the source voltage. In addition to the aforementioned benefits, the proposed cascaded inverter reduces the total number of inductors. To verify the analysis, detailed simulation, and experimental results of the proposed three-level inverter with input voltage 640 V, output power 1.2 kW, and output voltage 220 Vrms are provided. In this article, a novel single-phase single-stage transformerless inverter is proposed for grid-tied and standalone applications. The proposed inverter has low leakage current and can perform both buck and boost functions. Furthermore, compared to the conventional state-of-the-art buck–boost inverters, it can achieve high power density because the magnetic volume is reduced significantly. In addition, high power conversion efficiency can be realized because only one switch operates at a high frequency. Moreover, there is no need for inserting high-frequency dead-time between the switches because only one switch receives high frequency and all other switches receive line frequency signals. Unlike voltage-source inverters (VSI), the power decoupling element in current-source inverters (CSI) is inductor. Inductor has a long lifetime and makes the CSI more reliable. However, the traditional CSIs suffer from open-circuit problem and dangerous voltage spikes are generated if the input inductor current is intermitted. Therefore, to avoid the voltage spikes, overlap-time should be inserted in the gate signals. But these intervals distort the output currents and reduce the current source utilization. To address these issues, a novel three-phase CSI is proposed in this article. The proposed inverter is originated from the conventional seven-switch CSI named CSI7 by adding only two small film capacitors. The film capacitors along with the pre-existing diodes of the CSI7 ensure that there is always a path for the inductor current, and thus the open-circuit issue is resolved. The elimination of open-circuit issue enhances the reliability and allows to minimize the overlap-time. This will improve the quality of output currents as well. This article proposes a new single-phase three-level dual-buck inverter. The topology is derived from a simplified neutral-point clamped inverter that includes fewer active switches. The advantages of the proposed inverter are no shoot-through worries and no reverse recovery issue of the body diode of the power metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor compared with the conventional inverter; therefore, a high-reliability inverter can be achieved. The operation modes and pulsewidth modulation technique are analyzed in detail. Additionally, a switching scheme is proposed to balance and reduce the direct-current-link capacitance. This paper presents novel single-phase single-stage buck–boost inverters. The proposed inverters provide buck–boost operation for a wide variation of the input dc voltage. In addition, the proposed inverters are bidirectional and provide reactive power. Further, they require only one inductor. The proposed inverters also eliminate the common-mode leakage current by connecting the output neutral to the midpoint of input capacitors or directly to input voltage sources. Therefore, they are well suitable for photovoltaic applications. Although six switches are required, two switches are working at line frequency, resulting in negligible switching loss. Of the four remaining switches, only two are switching at high frequency at a time. The circuit operations are demonstrated through the analysis of the proposed inverters. In this paper, two single-phase single-stage split-inductor buck–boost inverters are proposed: type-I and II. The proposed type-I is unity power factor inverter, while the proposed type-II inverter is suitable for any power factor. Both topologies remove the shoot-through problem. Furthermore, the reverse recovery issues for all switches are eliminated; therefore, mosfets are used to obtain higher efficiencies. The proposed inverters operated at higher switching frequencies confer the additional benefit of smaller passive components. The current stresses of the two switches in the proposed type-I and II inverters are lower of the conventional boost inverter. The dead time can be eliminated at both the high and line switching frequencies. In addition, the inductor conduction loss is minimized to improve efficiency. Moreover, the voltage stresses of the two switches in the type-I inverter can be much lower of its counterpart boost inverter. Most importantly, unlike the conventional high-reliability inverters, the magnetic volume of the proposed high-reliability type-I and II inverters is same of its counterpart boost inverter. In this paper, a novel six-switch dual-output inverter is proposed. The three-switch leg in the proposed inverter is implemented with the dual-buck structure. Hence, it retains all the benefits of the conventional dual-buck inverter such as improved reliability owing to the absence of short-circuit problems and higher efficiency with the use of power metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor (mosfet) without reverse recovery issues on its body diode. In addition, the passive components can be reduced with the high switching frequency operation. In this paper, dual-buck structured single-stage buck–boost inverters that use power MOSFETs to achieve high efficiency are presented. The proposed inverters require fewer switches, and half of the switches have reduced current stresses. They have no shoot-through problem; therefore, high system reliability can be obtained. The dead-time in PWM signals can be minimized or eliminated, which improving the quality of the output ac voltages and increasing the efficiency. In the proposed inverters, MOSFETs can be used without reverse-recovery issues of their body diodes to boost the efficiency and increase the switching frequency. To further improve the efficiency and stability of the proposed single-phase inverter, PWM strategies combining high- and low-frequency modulation are presented. A hardware prototype of the single-phase inverter was built and tested using resistive, inductive, and nonlinear loads. A dual-buck inverter (DBI) possesses no shoot-through worries and can boost efficiency by using power mosfet s. The main drawback of a DBI is the use of more inductors than in a traditional full-bridge inverter. This greater number of inductors decreases the power density and increases system cost. In this paper, a modified cascaded full-bridge DBI is proposed. It retains all the advantages of the conventional cascaded full-bridge DBI, possesses no shoot-through issues, and can be operated with no pulse-width-modulation dead-times. It can be implemented with power mosfet without reverse recovery issues of a body diode to boost efficiency. The cascaded modules in the proposed inverter share current limiting inductors. Therefore, the number of inductors and inductor footprints, the complexity of the circuit layout, required inductance, and magnetic volume can all be decreased. In this paper, a new nonisolated high-voltage-gain boost converter is proposed. The proposed converter is constructed by adding an additional inductor to a conventional three-level-boost (TLB) converter. When compared with the conventional boost and TLB converters, the proposed converter can achieve higher voltage conversion ratio with reduced voltage and current stresses in the switches. In particular, the proposed converter can reduce the losses of active devices by reducing the current of the switch compared to conventional converters, thus, can achieve high efficiency. In addition, the proposed converter automatically balances the output voltages for an unbalanced load without the need for any additional control strategy or auxiliary circuit. This paper presents a new single-phase switched-coupled-inductor dc–ac inverter featuring higher voltage gain than the existing single-phase qZ-source and semi-Z-source inverters. Similar to the single-phase qZ-source and semi-Z-source inverters, the proposed inverter also has common grounds between the dc input and ac output voltages, which is beneficial especially for photovoltaic inverter systems. The inverter volume and maximum current flowing can be reduced significantly through the coupling of all inductors. The Z-source inverters (ZSIs) have many advantages over the conventional voltage-fed and current-fed inverters, and extensive research works are conducing recently. However, relatively difficult physical layouts of the Z-source networks make them less attractive in the industry applications. A good hardware design is important to handle with the inherent long high-frequency loop in order to avoid generating severe voltage overshoot in the dc-rail voltage of the ZSIs. In this paper, the high-frequency loops in various ZSIs are investigated. A dc-rail voltage clamping technique for magnetically coupled impedance source converters is proposed by using an intuitive circuit modification and addition of a clamping diode. Z-source inverters have become a research hotspot because of their single-stage buck–boost inversion ability, and better immunity to EMI noises. However, their boost gains are limited, because of higher component-voltage stresses and poor output power quality, which results from the tradeoff between the shoot-through interval and the modulation index. To overcome these drawbacks, a new high-voltage boost impedance-source inverter called a switched-coupled-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter (SCL-qZSI) is proposed, which integrates a switched-capacitor and a three-winding switched-coupled inductor (SCL) into a conventional qZSI. The proposed SCL-qZSI adds only one capacitor and two diodes to a classical qZSI, and even with a turns ratio of 1, it has a stronger voltage boost-inversion ability than existing high-voltage boost (q)ZSI topologies. Therefore, compared with other (q)ZSIs for the same input and output voltages, the proposed SCL-qZSI utilizes higher modulation index with lower component-voltage stresses, has better spectral performance, and has a lower input inductor current ripple and flux density swing or, alternately, it can reduce the number of turns or size of the input inductor. The size of the coupled inductor and the total number of turns required for three windings are comparable to those of a single inductor in (q)ZSIs.
