Due to the relatively low output voltage of photovoltaic (PV) source, a high step-up converter with high efficiency is needed when the PV source is connected to the power grid. A novel high step-up converter based on two switched capacitors and a coupled inductor is proposed in this paper. The operating principle is analyzed and the voltage gain is derived. A 100-W prototype is fabricated in the laboratory to verify the theoretical analysis, and the highest efficiency is 96.4%. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A two-phase interleaved boost dc–dc converter with an inversely coupled inductor in a discontinuous-current mode (DCM) is analyzed by the equivalent inductance method. Coupling effects on the circuit statuses are described, and a forced conduction of the power diode or reverse-paralleled diode of MOSFET is caused by coupling. As a result, three major circuit statuses are figured out according to the physical relationship between the input–output voltage ratio and the coupling coefficient, and their condition boundaries are used to classify the DCM operation modes. Then, considering the load (duty cycle) variation, ten DCM operation modes are comprehensively analyzed. The analysis can be used to make an easy prediction of operation modes, and extended to the analysis of an interleaved buck converter or buck/boost bidirectional converter with a coupled inductor in DCM. The average-current-controlled boost power factor correction converter may operate in all-continuous current mode (CCM), part-CCM/discontinuous current mode (DCM), or all-DCM mode in a half line cycle under different input voltage and load conditions, and the conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) spectrum of the converter exhibits differences in these operation modes. In this paper, by analyzing the characteristic of the harmonics of the drain-to-source voltage of the power switch, the characteristics of the common-mode and differential-mode noise of the converter are revealed in different operation modes. In a photovoltaic (PV)- or fuel-cell-based grid-connected power system, a high step-up dc–dc converter is required to boost the low voltage of a PV or fuel cell to a relatively high bus voltage for the downstream dc–ac grid-connected inverter. To integrate the advantages of the high voltage gain of a switched-capacitor (SC) converter and excellent output regulation of a switching-mode dc–dc converter, a method of combining the two types of converters is proposed in this paper. The basic idea is that when the switch is turned on, the inductor is charged, and the capacitors are connected in series to supply the load, and when the switch is turned off, the inductor releases energy to charge multiple capacitors in parallel, whose voltages are controlled by a pulsewidth modulation technique. Thus, a high voltage gain of the dc–dc converter can be obtained with good regulation. Based on this principle, a series of new topologies are derived, and the operating principles and voltage gains of the proposed converters are analyzed. In this paper, the differential-mode (DM) electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise of a single-phase boost power factor correction converter operating in critical current mode was analyzed. The DM noise spectra are calculated based on the mathematical model of EMI receiver and the required corner frequencies of DM filter are obtained. It can be seen that the minimum corner frequencies are determined by the maximum noises at 150 kHz. With the relation between the magnitude of the inductor current ripple and the DM noise, the characteristics of noise at 150 kHz are obtained by analyzing the current ripple magnitude at 150 kHz; thus, the worst conditions which have the maximum noise value are figured out. Meanwhile, the maximum noises at 150 kHz for different input voltages are identical, so the DM filter can be designed based on one worst spectrum at one input voltage without testing the spectra in other conditions. Interleaved critical current mode (CRM) boost power factor correction (PFC) converter is widely employed recently for its high power density. In order to further reduce the volume and the copper usage of the magnetic components, two-phase interleaved CRM boost PFC converter with a coupled inductor is analyzed in this paper. The coupling effects on the input current, the inductor current, the switching frequency and the flux linkage are analyzed separately. If the self-inductances and the magnetic core are the same for both coupled and noncoupled inductors, the number of winding turns of coupled inductor is fewer than that of the noncoupled inductor, which implies a lower cost. Although the input current ripple increases a little since coupling, a reduction in the total volume of magnetic components, including the electromagnetic interference filter and the coupled inductor, is possible if the coupling coefficient is made reasonable. A discontinuous-current-mode (DCM) boost power factor correction (PFC) converter features zero-current turn-on for the switch, no reverse recovery in diode, and constant–frequency operation. However, the input power factor (PF) is relatively low when the duty cycle is constant in a half line cycle. This paper derives the expressions of the input current and PF of the DCM boost PFC converter, and based on that, variable-duty-cycle control is proposed so as to improve the PF to nearly unity in the whole input–voltage range. A method of fitting the duty cycle is further proposed for simplifying the circuit implementation. Other than a higher PF, the proposed variable-duty-cycle control achieves a lower output–voltage ripple and a higher efficiency over constant-duty-cycle control.
