The Ottoman Archives have one of the richest archive collections in the world. However, not all the archived documents are well preserved and some undergo biodeterioration. Therefore, a rapid and promising treatment method is necessary to preserve the collection for following generations as heritage. Radiation presents as an alternative for the treatment of archival materials for this purpose. In this study, we conducted a survey to determine the contamination species and the D 10 values of the samples obtained from the shelves of the Ottoman Archives. The samples also included several insect pests collected at using a pheromone trap placed in the archive storage room. With the exception of few localized problems, no active pest presence was observed. The D 10 values of mold contamination and reference mold ( A. niger ) were found to be 1.0 and 0.68 kGy, respectively. Based on these results, it can be concluded that an absorbed dose of 6 kGy is required to remove the contamination from the materials stored in the Ottoman Archives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Lead (Pb) contamination in the black paper that recovers intraoral films (BKP) has been investigated. BKP samples were collected from the Radiology Clinics of the Dental School of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, Brazil. For sake of comparison, four different methods were used. The results revealed the presence of high lead levels, well above the maximum limit allowed by the legislation. Pb contamination levels achieved after the following treatments: paper digestion in nitric acid, microwave treatment, DIN38414-54 method and TCLP method were 997μgg−1, 189μgg−1, 20.8μgg−1, and 54.0μgg−1, respectively. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were employed for lead determination according to the protocols of the applied methods. Lead contamination in used BKP was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (SEM-EDS). All the SEM imaging was carried out in the secondary electron mode (SE) and backscattered-electron mode (QBSD) following punctual X-ray fluorescence spectra. Soil contamination derived from this product revealed the urgent need of addressing this problem. These elevated Pb levels, show that a preliminary treatment of BKP is mandatory before it is disposed into the common trash. Abstract: This paper discusses the relationship between environmental and economic performance and the influence of corporate strategies with regard to sustainability and the environment. After formulating a theoretical model, results are reported from an empirical analysis of the European paper manufacturing industry. New data are used to test hypotheses derived from the theoretical model, using environmental performance indices representing different corporate environmental strategy orientations. In particular, an emissions-based index largely reflecting end-of-pipe strategies and an inputs-based index reflecting integrated pollution prevention are distinguished. For the emissions-based index, a predominantly negative relationship between environmental and economic performance is found, whereas for the inputs-based index no significant link is found. This is consistent with the theoretical model, which predicts the possibility of different relationships. The results also show that for firms with pollution prevention-oriented corporate environmental strategies, the relationship between environmental and economic performance is more positive, thus making improvements in corporate sustainability more likely. Based on this last insight, managerial implications of this are discussed with regard to strategy choices, investment decisions and operations management. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

From the first investigations on peptide nucleic acids (PNA), peculiar features have been described as intrinsic of the singular chemical nature of these biomolecules. Relevant applications in the development of biosensors occurred in the last decades, exploiting them as bioreceptors. Their outstanding chemical and thermal stability as well as highly sensitive towards both complementary and non-complementary sequences, promoted them in the Olympus of biocomponents for applications in diagnostics. The intent of this review (85 ref) is to describe the last trends on the astonishing PNA technology in the biosensing field, in the view of the positive contamination with vanguard technologies including rational design and nanotechnology. In particular, electrochemical and optical biosensors exploiting PNA were reported from the literature, as well as nanostructured and paper-based biosensors for the design of microfluidics and lab-on-chip tools. • PNAs mimic DNA in binding oligonucleotide sequences through Hoogsteen base pairing in the major groove. • PNAs show outstanding stability and sensitivity towards both complementary and non-complementary sequences. • Vanguard technologies as rational design, nanotechnology, and microfluidics boost PNA use as smart bioreceptors for biosing.
