This publication is a compilation of 15 unclassified/unlimited technical papers presented at the 1998 meeting of the Joint Army-Navy-NASA-Air Force (JANNAF) Combustion Subcommittee (CS) and Propulsion Systems Hazards Subcommittee (PSHS) held jointly with the Airbreathing Propulsion Subcommittee (APS). The meeting was held on 7 - 11 December 1 998 at Raytheon Systems Company and the Marriott Hotel, Tucson, AZ. Topics covered include advanced ingredients and reaction kinetics in solid propellants and experimental diagnostic techniques.

A JANNAF Combustion Subcommittee Technology Awareness Seminar on Active Combustion Control (ACC) in Propulsion Systems' was held 12 November 1997 at the NASA Lewis Research Center (LeRC), Cleveland, Ohio. The objectives of the seminar were: 1) Define the need and potential of ACC to meet future requirements for gas turbines and ramjets; 2) Explain general principles of ACC and discuss recent successes to suppress combustion instabilities, increase combustion efficiency, reduce emission, and extend flammability limits; 3) Identify R&D barriers/needs for practical implementation of ACC; 4) Explore potential for improving coordination of future R&D activities funded by various government agencies. Over 40 individuals representing senior management from over 20 industry and government organizations participated. This document summarizes the presentations and findings of this seminar.

This volume is a compilation of 48 unclassified/unlimited distribution papers presented at the 1997 meeting of the JANNAF 34th Combustion Subcommittee (CS) held jointly with the Propulsion Systems Hazards Subcommittee (PSHS), and the Airbreathing Propulsion Subcommittee. Proceedings of the CS, PSHS and APS meetings are published separately by CPIA. The CS Meeting Proceedings are published in four volumes. The JANNAF papers contained in this volume contributed to the Second Year Progress Review of the Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative Program (MURI) on 'Novel New Ingredients to Stabilize Rocket Motors'. Technical progress made on this program was presented as JANNAF CS papers contained in Volumes 2 and 4. Papers contained in this volume review bi-plateau propellant combustion, AP and metal combustion, solid propellant combustion instability fundamentals and motor applications, gas-phase and condensed-phase kinetics, and measurement techniques.

This volume, the first of four volumes, is a collection of 33 unclassified/unlimited papers which were presented at the 33rd Joint Army-Navy-NASA-Air Force (JANNAF) Combustion Subcommittee Meeting in conjunction with the Propulsion Systems Hazards at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. The JANNAF papers contained in this volume review airbreathing combustion measurement, performance and control; electrothermal-chemical gun experiment and modeling; liquid propellant gun experiment and modeling; solid propellant gun interior ballistics; formulation modeling and diagnostics, ignition, and gun barrel wear modeling, blast and flash; and ram, fastcore and gas generator gun propulsion concepts.

This volume, the second of four volumes, is a collection of 48 unclassified/unlimited papers which were presented at the 33rd Joint Army-Navy-NASA-Air Force (JANNAF) Combustion Subcommittee Meeting conjunction with the Propulsion Systems Hazards Subcommittee held 4-8 November 1996 at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. The JANNAF papers contained in this volume review many areas of solid propellant combustion to include combustion fundamentals, combustion instability fundamentals and combustion instability applied to motors, AP combustion, Nitramine combustion, metal combustion, kinetics and spectroscopy and combustion topics of broad general interest.
