The physical motivations, present status, main results in study of cosmic rays and in the field of gamma-ray astronomy as well future plans of the TAIGA-1 (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) project are presented. The TAIGA observatory addresses ground-based gamma-ray astronomy and astroparticle physics at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, as well as cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV. The Tunka-Grande experiment is a scintillation array with about 0.5 sq.km sensitive area at Tunka Valley, Siberia, for measuring charged particles and muons in extensive air showers (EASs). Tunka-Grande is optimized for cosmic ray studies in the energy range 10 PeV to about 1 EeV, where exploring the composition is of fundamental importance for understanding the transition from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays. This paper attempts to provide a synopsis of the current results of the experiment. Digital radio arrays allow for a measurement of the air-shower energy and depth of its maximum with a resolution comparable to those of the leading optical detection methods. One of the remaining challenges regarding cosmic-ray radio instrumentation is an accurate estimation of their efficiency and aperture. We present a probabilistic model to address this challenge. We use the model to estimate the efficiency and aperture of the Tunka-Rex radio array. The basis of the model is a parametrization of the radio footprint and a probabilistic treatment of the detection process on both the antenna and array levels. In this way, we can estimate the detection efficiency for air showers as function of their arrival direction, energy, and impact point on the ground. In addition, the transparent internal relationships between the different stages of the air-shower detection process in our probabilistic approach enable to estimate the uncertainty of the efficiency and, consequently, of the aperture of radio arrays. A wide-angle Cerenkov array TAIGA-HiSCORE (FOV $\sim$0.6 sr), was originally created as a part of TAIGA installation for high-energy gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics. Array now consist on nearly 100 optical stations on the area of 1 km$^2$. Due to high accuracy and stability ($\sim$1 ns) of time synchronization of the optical stations the accuracy of EAS arrival direction reconstruction is reached 0.1$^\mathrm{o}$. It was proven that the array can also be used to search for nanosecond events of the optical range. The report discusses the method of searching for optical transients using the HiSCORE array and demonstrates its performance on a real example of detecting signals from an artificial Earth satellite. The search for this short flares in the HiSCORE data of the winter season 2018--2019 is carried out. One candidate for double repeater has been detected, but the estimated probability of random simulation of such a transient by background EAS events is not less than 10%, which does not allow us to say that the detected candidate corresponds to a real astrophysical transient. An upper bound on the frequency of optical spikes with flux density of more than $10^{-4} \mathrm{erg/s/cm}^2$ and a duration of more than 5\,ns is established as $\sim 2 \times 10^{-3}$ events/sr/hour., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, reported at the conference ISCRA-2021, Accepted for publication in Physics of Atomic Nuclei

36th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC2019, Madison, USA, 24 Jul 2019 - 1 Aug 2019; PoS(ICRC2019)331 (2019)., Sparse digital antenna arrays constitute a promising detection technique for future large-scale cosmic-ray observatories. It has recently been shown that this kind of instrumentation can provide a resolution of the energy and of the shower maximum on the level of other cosmic-ray detection methods. Due to the dominant geomagnetic nature of the air-shower radio emission in the traditional frequency band of 30 to 80 MHz, the amplitude and polarization of the radio signal strongly depend on the azimuth and zenith angle of the arrival direction. Thus, the estimation of the efficiency and subsequently of the aperture of an antenna array is more complex than for particle or Cherenkov-light detectors. We have built a new efficiency model based on utilizing a lateral distribution function as a shower model, and a probabilistic treatment of the detection process. The model is compared to the data measured by the Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex), a digital antenna array with an area of about 1 km$^2$ located in Siberia at the Tunka Advanced Instrument for Cosmic rays and Gamma Ray Astronomy (TAIGA). Tunka-Rex detects radio emission of air showers using trigger from air-Cherenkov and particle detectors. The present study is an essential step towards the measurement of the cosmic-ray flux with Tunka-Rex, and is important for radio measurements of air showers in general.

The Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex) is a cosmic-ray detector operating since 2012. The detection principle of Tunka-Rex is based on the radio technique, which impacts data acquisition and storage. In this paper we give a first detailed overview of the concept of the Tunka-Rex Virtual Observatory (TRVO), a framework for open access to the Tunka-Rex data, which currently is under active development and testing. Today, the operating TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic rays and Gamma Astronomy) experiment continuously produces and accumulates a large volume of raw astroparticle data. To be available for the scientific community these data should be well-described and formally characterized. The use of metadata makes it possible to search for and to aggregate digital objects (e.g. events and runs) by time and equipment through a unified interface to access them. The important part of the metadata is hidden and scattered in folder/files names and package headers. Such metadata should be extracted from binary files, transformed to a unified form of digital objects, and loaded into the catalog. To address this challenge we developed a concept of the metadata extractor that can be extended by facility-specific extraction modules. The Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex) is an antenna array spread over an area of about 1~km$^2$. The array is placed at the Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic rays and Gamma Astronomy (TAIGA) and detects the radio emission of air showers in the band of 30 to 80~MHz. During the last years it was shown that a sparse array such as Tunka-Rex is capable of reconstructing the parameters of the primary particle as accurate as the modern instruments. Based on these results we continue developing our data analysis. Our next goal is the reconstruction of cosmic-ray energy spectrum observed only by a radio instrument. Taking a step towards it, we develop a model of aperture of our instrument and test it against hybrid TAIGA observations and Monte-Carlo simulations. The Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex) is an antenna array consisting of 63 antennas at the location of the TAIGA facility (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) in Eastern Siberia, nearby Lake Baikal. Tunka-Rex is triggered by the air-Cherenkov array Tunka-133 during clear and moonless winter nights and by the scintillator array Tunka-Grande during the remaining time. Tunka-Rex measures the radio emission from the same air-showers as Tunka-133 and Tunka-Grande, but with a higher threshold of about 100 PeV. During the first stages of its operation, Tunka-Rex has proven, that sparse radio arrays can measure air-showers with an energy resolution of better than 15\% and the depth of the shower maximum with a resolution of better than 40 g/cm\textsuperscript{2}. To improve and interpret our measurements as well as to study systematic uncertainties due to interaction models, we perform radio simulations with CORSIKA and CoREAS. Tunka-Rex is detector for radio emission produced by cosmic-ray air-showers located in Siberia, triggered by Tunka-133, a co-located air-Cherenkov detector during night, and by a scintillator array Tunka-Grande during day. Tunka-Rex demonstrates that the radio technique can provide a cost-effective extension of existing air-shower arrays. Operating in the frequency range of 30-80 MHz, Tunka-Rex is limited by the galactic background, and suffers from the local radio interferences. Tunka-Rex, the Tunka Radio extension at the TAIGA facility (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) in Siberia, has recently been expanded to a total number 63 SALLA antennas, most of them distributed on an area of one square kilometer. In the first years of operation, Tunka-Rex was solely triggered by the co-located air-Cherenkov array Tunka-133. The correlation of the measurements by both detectors has provided direct experimental proof that radio arrays can measure the position of the shower maximum. The precision achieved so far is 40 g/cm^2, and several methodical improvements are under study. Moreover, the cross-comparison of Tunka-Rex and Tunka-133 shows that the energy reconstruction of Tunka-Rex is precise to 15 %, with a total accuracy of 20 % including the absolute energy scale. By using exactly the same calibration source for Tunka-Rex and LOPES, the energy scale of their host experiments, Tunka-133 and KASCADE-Grande, respectively, can be compared even more accurately with a remaining uncertainty of about 10 %. The Tunka-Rex experiment (Tunka Radio Extension) has been deployed in 2012 at the Tunka Valley (Republic of Buryatia, Russia). Its purpose is to investigate methods for the energy spectrum and the mass composition of high-energy cosmic rays based on the radio emission of air showers. Tunka-Rex is an array of 25 radio antennas distributed over an area of 3 km^2. The most important feature of the Tunka-Rex is that the air-shower radio emission is measured in coincidence with the Tunka-133 installation, which detects the Cherenkov radiation generated by the same atmospheric showers. Joint measurements of the radio emission and the Cherenkov light provide a unique opportunity for cross calibration of both calorimetric detection methods. The main goal of Tunka-Rex is to determine the precision for the reconstruction of air-shower parameters using the radio detection technique. We reconstructed the energy and the position of the shower maximum of air showers with energies $E \gtrsim 100 $PeV applying a method using radio measurements performed with Tunka-Rex. An event-to-event comparison to air-Cherenkov measurements of the same air showers with the Tunka-133 photomultiplier array confirms that the radio reconstruction works reliably. The Tunka-Rex reconstruction methods and absolute scales have been tuned on CoREAS simulations and yield energy and $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ values consistent with the Tunka-133 measurements. The results of two independent measurement seasons agree within statistical uncertainties, which gives additional confidence in the radio reconstruction. The energy precision of Tunka-Rex is comparable to the Tunka-133 precision of $15 %$, and exhibits a $20 %$ uncertainty on the absolute scale dominated by the amplitude calibration of the antennas. For $X_{\mathrm{max}}$, this is the first direct experimental correlation of radio measurements with a different, established method. At the moment, the $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ resolution of Tunka-Rex is approximately $40 $g/cm$^2$. This resolution can probably be improved by deploying additional antennas and by further development of the reconstruction methods, since the present analysis does not yet reveal any principle limitations., Comment: accepted for publication by JCAP

The Tunka-Radio extension (Tunka-Rex) is a radio detector for air showers in Siberia. From 2012 to 2014, Tunka-Rex operated exclusively together with its host experiment, the air-Cherenkov array Tunka-133, which provided trigger, data acquisition, and an independent air-shower reconstruction. It was shown that the air-shower energy can be reconstructed by Tunka-Rex with a precision of 15\% for events with signal in at least 3 antennas, using the radio amplitude at a distance of 120\,m from the shower axis as an energy estimator. Using the reconstruction from the host experiment Tunka-133 for the air-shower geometry (shower core and direction), the energy estimator can in principle already be obtained with measurements from a single antenna, close to the reference distance. We present a method for event selection and energy reconstruction, requiring only one antenna, and achieving a precision of about 20\%. This method increases the effective detector area and lowers thresholds for zenith angle and energy, resulting in three times more events than in the standard reconstruction.

The Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex) is a radio detector at the TAIGA facility located in Siberia nearby the southern tip of Lake Baikal. Tunka-Rex measures air-showers induced by high-energy cosmic rays, in particular, the lateral distribution of the radio pulses. The depth of the air-shower maximum, which statistically depends on the mass of the primary particle, is determined from the slope of the lateral distribution function (LDF). Using a model-independent approach, we have studied possible features of the one-dimensional slope method and tried to find improvements for the reconstruction of primary mass. To study the systematic uncertainties given by different primary particles, we have performed simulations using the CONEX and CoREAS software packages of the recently released CORSIKA v7.5 including the modern high-energy hadronic models QGSJet-II.04 and EPOS-LHC. The simulations have shown that the largest systematic uncertainty in the energy deposit is due to the unknown primary particle. The Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex) is an array of 44 radio antenna stations, distributed over 3 km$^{2}$, constituting a radio detector for air showers with an energy threshold around 10$^{17}$ eV. It is an extension to Tunka-133, an air-Cherenkov detector in Siberia, which is used as an external trigger for Tunka-Rex and provides a reliable reconstruction of energy and shower maximum. Each antenna station consists of two perpendicularly aligned active antennas, called SALLAs. An antenna calibration of the SALLA with a commercial reference source enables us to reconstruct the detected radio signal on an absolute scale. Since the same reference source was used for the calibration of LOPES and, in a calibration campaign in 2014, also for LOFAR, these three experiments now have a consistent calibration and, therefore, absolute scale. This was a key ingredient to resolve a longer standing contradiction between measurements of two calibrated experiments. We will present how the calibration was performed and compare radio measurements of air showers from Tunka-Rex to model calculations with the radio simulation code CoREAS, confirming it within the scale uncertainty of the calibration of 18%.

The Tunka observatory is located close to Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia. Its main detector, Tunka-133, is an array of photomultipliers measuring Cherenkov light of air showers initiated by cosmic rays in the energy range of approximately $10^{16}-10^{18}\,$eV. In the last years, several extensions have been built at the Tunka site, e.g., a scintillator array named Tunka-Grande, a sophisticated air-Cherenkov-detector prototype named HiSCORE, and the radio extension Tunka-Rex. Tunka-Rex started operation in October 2012 and currently features 44 antennas distributed over an area of about $3\,$km$^2$, which measure the radio emission of the same air showers detected by Tunka-133 and Tunka-Grande. Tunka-Rex is a technological demonstrator that the radio technique can provide an economic extension of existing air-shower arrays. The main scientific goal is the cross-calibration with the air-Cherenkov measurements. By this cross-calibration, the precision for the reconstruction of the energy and mass of the primary cosmic-ray particles can be determined. Finally, Tunka-Rex can be used for cosmic-ray physics at energies close to $1\,$EeV, where the standard Tunka-133 analysis is limited by statistics. Tunka-Rex is the radio extension of Tunka-133 located in Siberia close to Lake Baikal. The latter is a photomultiplier array registering air-Cherenkov light from air showers induced by cosmic-ray particles with initial energies of approximately $10^{16}$ to $10^{18}$ eV. Tunka-Rex is the radio extension of Tunka-133, a 1 km^2 air-Cherenkov Detector for air showers in Siberia. Tunka-Rex began operation on October 8th 2012 with 20 radio antennas. Its main goals are to explore the possible precision of the radio detection technique in determination of primary energy and mass. Each radio antenna station consists of two perpendicular aligned active SALLA antennas, which receive the radio signal from air showers. The preamplified radio signal is transmitted to local cluster centers of the Tunka-133 DAQ, where it is filtered, amplified and digitized. To reconstruct the radio signal it is crucial to understand how it is affected in each of these steps. Thus, we have studied the combined response of the antenna, with its directional pattern and the analog electronics chain, consisting of a Low-Noise Amplifier and a filter amplifier. We discuss the hardware setup of Tunka-Rex and how a description of its response is obtained. Furthermore, we estimate systematic uncertainties on the reconstructed radio signal due to hardware effects (e.g., slight variations of the electronics properties). Tunka-Rex, the Tunka radio extension, is an array of 20 antennas at the Tunka experiment close to Lake Baikal in Siberia. It started operation on 08 October 2012. The antennas are connected directly to the data acquisition of the Tunka main detector, a 1 square-km large array of 133 non-imaging photomultipliers observing the Cherenkov light of air showers in dark and clear nights. This allows to cross-calibrate the radio signal with the air-Cherenkov signal of the same air showers - in particular with respect to the energy and the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum, Xmax. Consequently, we can test whether in rural regions with low radio background the practically achievable radio precision comes close to the precision of the established fluorescence and air-Cherenkov techniques. At a mid-term perspective, due to its higher duty-cycle, Tunka-Rex can enhance the effective observing time of Tunka by an order of magnitude, at least in the interesting energy range above 100 PeV. Moreover, Tunka-Rex is very cost-effective, e.g., by using economic Short Aperiodic Loaded Loop Antennas (SALLAs). Thus, the results of Tunka-Rex and the comparison to other sophisticated radio arrays will provide crucial input for future large-scale cosmic-ray observatories, for which measurement precision as well as costs per area have to be optimized. Tunka-Rex is a new radio antenna array which extends the Tunka experiment in Siberia close to lake Baikal. It consists of 20 antennas on an area of 1 km^2 which measure the radio emission of high-energy air showers. Tunka-Rex is triggered by the photomultiplier array of Tunka measuring air-Cherenkov light of air showers in the energy range from about 10 PeV to 1 EeV. This configuration allows for the worldwide first hybrid measurements of the radio and air-Cherenkov signal for the same events: an ideal situation to perform a cross-calibration between both methods. Consequently, the main goal of Tunka-Rex is to determine the achievable energy and Xmax precision of radio measurements by comparing them to the reconstruction of the air-Cherenkov measurements. The Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex) is a digital antenna array located in the Tunka Valley in Siberia, which measures the radio emission of cosmic-ray air-showers with energies up to EeV. Tunka-Rex is externally triggered by the Tunka-133 air-Cherenkov timing array (during nights) and by the Tunka-Grande array of particle detectors (remaining time). These three arrays comprise the cosmic-ray extension of the Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic rays and Gamma Astronomy (TAIGA). The configuration and analysis pipeline of Tunka-Rex have significantly changed over its runtime. Density of the antennas was tripled and the pipeline has become more developed forming now sophisticated piece of reconstruction software. During its lifecycle Tunka-Rex has demonstrated that a cost-effective and full duty-cycle radio detector can reconstruct the energy and shower maximum with a precision comparable to optical detectors. Moreover, it was shown that cosmic-ray instruments, that use different detection techniques and are placed in different locations, can be cross-calibrated via their radio extensions. These results show the prospects of application of the radio technique for future large-scale experiments for cosmic-ray and neutrino detection. For the time being Tunka-Rex has ceased active measurements and focuses on the data analysis and publication of corresponding software and data in an open-access data center with online analysis features. Tunka-Rex (Tunka Radio Extension) is an antenna array for cosmic-ray detection located in Siberia. Previous studies of cosmic rays with Tunka-Rex have shown high precision in determining the energy of the primary particle and the possibility to reconstruct the depth of the shower maximum. The next step is the reconstruction of the mass composition and the energy spectrum of cosmic rays. One of the main problems appearing within this task is to estimate the detection efficiency of the instrument, and the exposure of the observations. The detection efficiency depends on properties of the primary cosmic rays, such as energy and arrival direction, as well as on many parameters of the instrument: density of the array, efficiency of the receiving antennas, signal-detection threshold, data-acquisition acceptance, and trigger properties. More than that, the configuration of detector changes with time. During the measurements some parts of the detector can provide corrupted data or sometimes do not operate. All these features should be taken into account for an estimation of the detection efficiency. For each energy and arrival direction we estimate the detection probability and effective area of the instrument. To estimate the detection probability of a shower we use a simple Monte Carlo model, which predicts the size of the footprint of the radio emission as function of the primary energy and arrival direction (taking into account the geometry of Earth's magnetic field). Combining these approaches we calculate the event statistics and exposure for each run. A distributed data warehouse system is one of the actual issues in the field of astroparticle physics. Famous experiments, such as TAIGA, KASCADE-Grande, produce tens of terabytes of data measured by their instruments. It is critical to have a smart data warehouse system on-site to store the collected data for further distribution effectively. It is also vital to provide scientists with a handy and user-friendly interface to access the collected data with proper permissions not only on-site but also online. The latter case is handy when scientists need to combine data from different experiments for analysis. In this work, we describe an approach to implementing a distributed data warehouse system that allows scientists to acquire just the necessary data from different experiments via the Internet on demand. The paper is devoted to the issues of raw binary data documenting, parsing and verifying in astroparticle data lifecycle. The long-term preservation of raw data of astroparticle experiments as originally generated is essential for re-running analyses and reproducing research results. The selected high-quality raw data should have detailed documentation and accompanied by open software tools for access to them. We consider applicability of binary file format description languages to specify, parse and verify raw data of the Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic rays and Gamma Astronomy (TAIGA) experiment. The formal specifications are implemented for five data formats of the experiment and provide automatic generation of source code for data reading libraries in target programming languages (e.g. C++, Java, and Python). These libraries were tested on TAIGA data. They showed a good performance and help us to locate the parts with corrupted data. The format specifications can be used as metadata for exchanging of astroparticle raw data. They can also simplify software development for data aggregation from various sources for the multi-messenger analysis.

German-Russian Astroparticle Data Life Cycle Initiative is an international project whose aim is to develop a distributed data storage system that aggregates data from the storage systems of different astroparticle experiments. The prototype of such a system, which is called the Astroparticle Physics Distributed Data Storage (APPDS), has been being developed. In this paper, the Data Aggregation Service, one of the core services of APDDS, is presented. In the frame of the Karlsruhe-Russian Astroparticle Data Life Cycle Initiative it was proposed to deploy an educational resource astroparticle.online for the training of students in the field of astroparticle physics. This resource is based on HUBzero, which is an open-source software platform for building powerful websites, which supports scientific discovery, learning, and collaboration. HUBzero has been deployed on the servers of Matrosov Institute for System Dynamics and Control Theory. The educational resource astroparticle.online is being filled with the information covering cosmic messengers, astroparticle physics experiments and educational courses and schools on astroparticle physics. Furthermore, the educational resource astroparticle.online can be used for online collaboration.
