In an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, cyclic prefix (CP) has to be added to eliminate multipath-induced inter-symbol interference (ISI) with a severely sacrificed bandwidth efficiency. Peak-to-average ratio (PAPR) may impair its performance further if a large number of carriers are used. On the other hand, traditional multi-carrier modulation suffers a prohibitive complexity, which can not be implemented with colorred current available silicon technologies. This work proposes a cost-effective way to implement multi-carrier modulation, namely multi-layer quadrature (MLQ) modulation, which requires only two oscillators. As an application example, we apply MLQ modulation to a complementary coded code division multiple access (MLQ-CC-CDMA) system, whose multi-carrier transmission is based on MLQ modulation to mitigate ISI and multi-user interference (MUI) with ideal auto- and cross-correlations of complementary codes. Compared to a frequency domain (FD) CC-CDMA system, MLQ-CC-CDMA has a lower RF complexity. Compared to OFDM direct sequence (DS) CDMA and single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) CDMA schemes, MLQ-CC-CDMA achieves a higher spectrum efficiency (SE) and a lower bit error rate with Rake and minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection due to its powerful multipath and multi-carrier diversity gains. Spectrum efficiency is a critical performance metric in wireless communications due to an increasing demand for radio spectrum to support high data rate applications. Direct sequence spread spectrum technology enables a code division multiple access (CDMA) system a strong anti-interference capability but with a relatively low spectrum efficiency. To address this issue, complementary coded scrambling multiple access (CCSMA) (X. Liu et al., in 2018) was proposed to use three-dimensional (space-time-frequency) resources for performance enhancement. However, in a CCSMA system, if the number of multipath returns is larger than the number of transmit (Tx) antennas, a code reuse problem occurs to degrade bit error rate performance significantly. This work designs a new scrambling code, namely generalized complementary coded scrambling multiple access (GCCSMA) codes, to overcome the code reuse problem in CCSMA. GCCSMA uses complementary codes, scrambling modulation, and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) techniques jointly, which works well even in multipath channels with more paths than the number of Tx antennas. With 5G mobile communication systems having been commercially rolled out, research discussions on next generation mobile systems, that is, 6G, have started. On the other hand, vehicular technologies are also evolving rapidly, from connected vehicles called V2X (vehicle to everything) to autonomous vehicles to the combination of the two, that is, the networks of connected autonomous vehicles (CAV). How fast the evolution of these two areas will go hand-in-hand is of great importance, which is the focus of this article. After a brief overview of the technological evolution of V2X to CAV and 6G key technologies, this article explores two complementary research directions, namely, 6G for CAVs versus CAVs for 6G. The former investigates how various 6G key enablers, such as THz, cell free communication and artificial intelligence (AI), can be utilized to provide CAV mission-critical services. The latter discusses how CAVs can facilitate effective deployment and operation of 6G systems. Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) underlay cellular communication plays an important role in the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond communications and its security issues attract a lot of attention. Physical layer security, which explores channel characteristics to protect wireless communications, is very attractive due to its low latency. This paper focuses on secrecy capacity maximization in V2V underlay cellular communications, where the secrecy capacity of vehicular user equipments (VUEs) is optimized first, followed by sum proportional fairness function optimization for both VUEs and cellular user equipments (CUEs). The optimization problems can be solved in two sub-problems, e.g., power and subcarrier allocation problems. The power allocation can be done with the first strategy using a one-dimensional searching algorithm, whereas a genetic algorithm (GA) is used to solve the second optimization problem. In addition, as VUEs share uplink resources with CUEs, the co-channel interference exists and the subcarrier allocation sub-problem is a 3D search problem, which is solved by a two-step iterative Hungarian algorithm (IHA). In a frequency division complementary coded CDMA (FD-CC-CDMA) system, multiple tuners have to be used for multi-carrier modulation, which has a very high complexity and power consumption. In this paper, we propose a CP-free OFDM scheme to implement multi-carrier modulation in an FD-CC-CDMA system, which is named as CP-free OFDM-CC-CDMA system. The transmitter in the CP-free OFDM-CC-CDMA system offers a unique flexibility to adjust the amount of data processed at the same time to ensure that the OFDM block size exceeds the delay spread of a multipath channel, which attributes to effective mitigation of multipath induced inter-symbol interference (ISI). At the receiver of a CP-free OFDM-CC-CDMA system, minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization and MMSE combining are used to mitigate multi-user interference (MUI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI). The obtained results show that a CP-free OFDM-CC-CDMA system offers a much higher transmission efficiency than FD-CC-CDMA and OFDM-DS-CDMA systems. In device-to-device (D2D) underlaying vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, radio resource blocks (RBs) are allocated to primary cellular users, which yields sub-optimal rates and a long access latency for secondary D2D-enabled vehicles. This work investigates a joint radio resource and power management (RRPM) problem for secure cellular underlaying V2V communications, where cellular users and vehicles have the same priority, giving vehicles more opportunities to access the RBs. Specifically, we aim to maximize secrecy rates of V2V channels under the condition that eavesdropper has an adaptive receiving detection vector to maximize the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) from vehicles. For a single pair of a vehicle and a cellular user, the closed-form optimal power allocation expressions are derived for the interference-limited scenario and the noise-limited scenario, respectively. Moreover, for multiple pairs of vehicles and cellular users, a 3-partite hypergraph based 3-dimensional matching approach is proposed to solve a mixed-integer and non-convex problem, which achieves a near-optimal result with an $O(n^4)$ time complexity. Broadband satellite services, such as satellite- based Internet of Things and cloud services, have attracted much attention recently. To achieve the goal of anytime and anywhere high-speed satellite communications, there is a big demand for satellite spectrum. The push for improving spectrum efficiency in satellite systems has been an important issue, mainly from the perspectives of spectrum reuse and dynamic spectrum access. In this article, we investigate the feasibility of improving satellite spectrum efficiency from another viewpoint, that is, introducing a game-theoretical approach, including spectrum pricing and auction, for satellite spectrum dynamic allocation. Although spectrum pricing and auction have been suggested for terrestrial networks, this work aims to establish a market-inspired model to address distinct characteristic features of satellite communications. In particular, we propose a generic satellite spectrum pricing scheme, taking into account three factors: spectrum reuse in multi-beam satellite systems (MSS), where intercell interference should be mitigated; the heterogeneous nature of satellite transmission links in different spectrum bands, in which a differential pricing scheme is desirable; and predictable and periodic satellite switching from one non-GEO satellite link to another, where traffic-oriented pricing should be used. This paper investigates an integrated wireless communication system including non-orthogonal multiple access, full-duplex relaying, and energy harvesting techniques (named as EH-FD-NOMA). In this scheme, an energy-limited full-duplex relay harvests energy from a source at the first stage. Then, the relay detects the superimposed signal from the source and transmits the decoded signal to destination. Closed-form outage probabilities and ergodic rates at the relay and destination are derived. Small cell base stations (SBSs) in 5G and beyond networks will play multiple roles in addition to radio access, and will be deployed in a very high density. They can facilitate mobile edge computing (MEC), such that SBSs can store, process, and control network data signals, becoming important elements in ultra-dense networks (UDNs). However, intercell interference may jeopardize the gains from network densification, and thus coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission is important in UDNs. MEC and CoMP are different technologies, but they can work jointly to benefit UDNs. In this article, we aim to bridge the gap between MEC and CoMP based on three MEC functions. We will show that CoMP transmission reduces UDN complexity and transmission delay with collaboration among MEC servers in UNDs. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising candidate technology for 5G cellular systems. In this paper, design and optimization of scheduling and NOMA algorithms is investigated. The impact of power allocation for NOMA systems with round-robin scheduling is analyzed. A statistic model is developed for network performance analysis of joint scheduling of spectrum resource and power for NOMA algorithms. Proportional fairness scheduling for NOMA is proposed with a two-step approach, with objective of achieving high throughput and user fairness with low computational complexity. In the first step, an optimal power allocation strategy is developed with an objective of maximizing weighted sum rate. In the second step, three fast and scalable scheduling and user pairing algorithms with QoS guarantee are proposed, in which only a few user pairs are checked for NOMA multiplex. The algorithms are extended to the cases with imperfect channel state estimation and more than two users being multiplexed over one resource block. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithms are faster and more scalable than the existing algorithms, and maintain a higher throughput gain than orthogonal multiple access. The fifth generation communication systems aim to achieve higher capacity and more user access. Full-duplex (FD) communication can achieve twice the spectral efficiency of the conventional half-duplex systems under ideal conditions, and FD relay is a common application of FD technology. In this paper, we propose a modified signal-to-leakage-and-noise ratio (SLNR) precoding scheme for the FD multiuser MIMO relay system, in which the self-interference (SI) of the relay is considered. In contrast to block diagonalization (BD) precoding and zero-forcing (ZF) precoding, SLNR precoding does not have an antenna dimension limitation, which enables it to support more antennas and users. In addition, SLNR precoding balances the interference and noise of a system, whereas BD precoding and ZF precoding only consider the interference. The numerical results show that the proposed SLNR precoding scheme can achieve better performance with low SI. Device-to-Device (D2D) communications have been proposed to improve spectrum and energy efficiency of cellular networks. One of the most critical issues in D2D networks is the selection of the communication modes for multiple D2D pairs in a cell. In this article, relay-assisted mode, in addition to basic cellular and direct D2D modes, is taken into account to improve the link performance of D2D pairs. We investigate the optimal mode selection schemes to maximize cell-wise capacity based on the reuse of cellular uplink channels in different multi-pair D2D communication scenarios. We discover that the optimal mode selection problem can be transformed into a linear programming problem with polynomial computational complexity. Cyclic prefix (CP) is used in OFDM/OFDMA systems for data transmission over multipath channels at a dear price of spectral efficiency degradation. This work aims to design a CP-free OFDM/OFDMA system for futuristic high-speed communications, where data block length can be shorter than channel delay spread. In particular, we utilize a time domain precoding scheme working jointly with a multiblock decision feedback equalization algorithm to mitigate intersymbol interference and intercarrier interference caused by multipath propagation. The satisfactory performance of the scheme is validated by simulation results, showing that the proposed CP-free OFDM/OFDMA scheme with known channel state information at transmitter and receiver offers a significantly higher spectral efficiency than traditional CP-based OFDM/OFDMA schemes. Ultra-dense networks (UDNs) are one of the key enabling techniques for implementation of 5G wireless communication systems, and inter-cell interference is a major issue in UDNs. Coordinated Multipoint Joint Transmission (CoMP-JT) helps reduce inter-cell interferences. However, due to randomly and densely distributed access entities in UDNs, many challenging issues need to be dealt with to implement CoMP-JT in UDNs. In this article, we aim to address the issues on how to achieve maximal per area spectral efficiency in UDNs based on CoMP-JT technology. In traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, a cyclic prefix (CP) must be used in every block for intersymbol interference (ISI) suppression in time-dispersive channels at a price of severely impaired spectrum efficiency. To deal with this issue, the symbol cyclic shift equalization (SCSE) algorithm was proposed to implement a CP-free OFDM system. In this paper, we aim to further reduce the computational complexity of the SCSE algorithm. In particular, a pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) is used at a transmitter to construct conjugate symmetric OFDM blocks, while only partial samples in an OFDM block are involved in the SCSE algorithm at the receiver side, leading to a significantly reduced implementation complexity if compared to an SCSE quadratic-amplitude modulation(QAM)/phase-shift keying (PSK)-OFDM system, where all samples in an OFDM block must be involved in the detection process. The use of cyclic prefix (CP) allows all existing orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing or multiple access (OFDM/OFDMA) systems to realize high-data-rate transmission in frequency-selective fading channels at the expense of losses in spectrum efficiency, energy efficiency, and transmission rate (SET). This paper proposes a CP-free OFDM/OFDMA design. Unlike traditional OFDM/OFDMA systems, the proposed CP-free OFDM/OFDMA does not insert CPs between symbols at the transmitter side. The neighboring symbols in frequency-selective fading channels will be overlapped at a receiver, and decision feedback equalization (DFE) is performed before FFT operation for intersymbol interference (ISI) removal. After DFE, each symbol consists of multipath returns with different linear shifts (LSs), which may result in intercarrier interference (ICI). Therefore, the output symbols from the DFE will be sent to a CP restoration unit for LS-to-cyclic-shift (CS) conversion. We call this a CP-free OFDM/OFDMA system symbol CS equalizing OFDM/OFDMA (SCSE-OFDM/OFDMA), whose system design is introduced in detail in this paper. A smart utility network (SUN), as defined in the IEEE 802.15.4g standard, is an emerging technology enabling reliable data transmissions in smart grid (SG) neighbourhood area networks. However, a SUN operates on unlicensed bands that are overlapped with most of the channels of wireless local area networks (WLANs). Thus, it is critical to investigate the coexistence issues for SUNs and WLANs in SG. This article aims to propose a dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) coexistence scheme working with cognitive radio techniques, including the designs of network topology and channel detection/allocation schemes. We also establish Markov chain models based on channel state transitions for the proposed schemes, which are used to analyze network performance from the viewpoint of SUN services. This letter studies power allocation for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer in downlink coordinated multipoint (CoMP) systems. A central unit (CU) conveys data and channel information to multiple radio remote units (RRUs) via a capacity-limited backhaul. We provide a dual polarized (DP) antenna-based double side signal splitting method. Specifically, signals are split up into information decoding part [user equipment (UE) data transmitted from CU] and energy harvesting part (deterministic data created at RRUs), which are transmitted and received via vertical and horizontal polarizations of DP antennas, respectively. Normal beamformers (such as zero forcing and maximum ratio transmission) are used to reduce complexity. The problem is to maximize the sum rate satisfying per-UE received power, per-backhaul-link capacity, and per-RRU power transmission constraints. This paper aims to analyze coexistence performance and study the impact of WLAN interferences on SUNs. To quantitatively reveal packet error rate (PER) performance of SUNs under multiple WLAN interferers, a segmentation scheme for desired data packet with multiple interferers is developed, based on which a packet collision model in a multi-interferer environment is proposed. The new packet collision model captures interference scenarios in every time segment of a desired packet using the proposed segmentation scheme. It paves a way to make a precise estimation of the PER of SUNs under multiple WLAN interferers. Furthermore, we design a channel agility scheme for coexistence of SUNs and WLANs via improving the existing ones, and analyze its performance in interference identification and avoidance. The use of cognitive-radio(CR)-enabled femtocell is regarded as a promising technique in wireless communications, and many studies have been reported on its resource allocation and interference management. However, fairness and spectrum sensing errors were ignored in most of the existing studies. In this paper, we propose a resource allocation scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-based cognitive femtocells. The target is to maximize the total capacity of all femtocell users (FUs) under given quality-of-service (QoS) and cotier/cross-tier interference constraints with imperfect channel sensing. To achieve the fairness among FUs, the minimum and maximum numbers of subchannels occupied by each user are considered. First, the subchannel and power allocation problem is modeled as a mixed-integer programming problem, and then, it is transformed into a convex optimization problem by relaxing subchannel sharing and applying cotier interference constraints, which is finally solved using a dual decomposition method. Based on the obtained solution, an iterative subchannel and power allocation algorithm is proposed. With the growing popularity of mobile Internet, providing secure wireless services has become a critical issue. Physical layer security (PHY-security) has been recognized as an effective means to enhance wireless security by exploiting wireless medium characteristics, for example, fading, noise, and interference. A particularly interesting PHY-security technology is cooperative relay due to the fact that it helps to provide distributed diversity and shorten access distance. This article offers a tutorial on various multi-antenna relaying technologies to improve security at physical layer. The state-of-the-art research results on multi-antenna relay aided PHY-security as well as some secrecy performance optimization schemes are presented. In particular, we focus on large-scale MIMO relaying technology, which is effective in tackling various challenging issues for implementing wireless PHY-security, such as short-distance interception without eavesdropper CSI and with imperfect legitimate CSI. Cognitive radio technology can significantly improve spectrum utilization efficiency by enabling SUs to access the licensed spectrum dynamically without causing excessive interference to PUs. Currently, most of the existing research on cognitive radio networks has been conducted based on an assumption that SUs can perfectly synchronize with PUs. However, when SUs are working with unknown behaviors of PUs, the synchronous assumption becomes invalid. To tackle this issue, we introduce several approaches for asynchronous spectrum sensing and asynchronous spectrum access, respectively, with which SUs can access the primary channels dynamically even without achieving synchronization with the PUs. In this article, we discuss the key techniques, corresponding solutions, and potential application scenarios of the asynchronous spectrum sensing and access schemes. Specifically, we present two asynchronous spectrum sensing schemes under non-cooperative and cooperative scenarios, respectively. Meanwhile, a distributed asynchronous spectrum access algorithm is also illustrated. Moreover, the proposed schemes are compared with existing works under the same framework, which enables readers to understand the motivation, problem formulation, methodology, and results of the asynchronous spectrum sensing and spectrum access schemes. Complete complementary codes (CCC) refer to a set of two-dimensional matrices, which have zero non-trivial aperiodic auto- and cross- correlation sums. A modern application of CCC is in interference-free multicarrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) communications. In this paper, we first show that in asynchronous “fractional-delay” uplink channels, CCC-MC-CDMA systems suffer from orthogonality loss, which may lead to huge interference increase when a conventional correlator based receiver is deployed. Then, by exploiting the correlation properties of CCC, we present a fractional-delay-resilient receiver which is comprised of a chip-spaced correlating array. In this paper, we consider a multi-cell MISO downlink, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) sends messages to its intended user, while a passive eavesdropper tries to intercept the information in each cell. Physical layer security is employed in order to guarantee information security. Due to incomplete channel state information (CSI) at BSs, residue inter-cell interference exists even with coordinated beamforming, which exerts a great impact on the secrecy performance. In this paper, we conduct a unified performance analysis for physical layer security with incomplete CSI, and derives closed-form expressions of ergodic secrecy rate, secrecy outage probability, and interception probability, considering CSI estimation accuracy, transmit signal to noise ratio (SNR), and channel condition. We reveal some insights on the secrecy performance through asymptotic analysis. Furthermore, based on the derived theoretical results, we propose a CSI exchange amount allocation scheme. Cognitive radio technology can significantly improve spectrum utilization efficiency via enabling secondary users to access licensed spectrum dynamically without harmful interference to primary users. Most existing works on cognitive radio networks were focused on enhancing spectrum efficiency using spectrum sensing, spectrum sharing, and network deployment schemes. However, the energy efficiency issue was largely ignored. Thus, the dilemma between high energy consumption by fast-growing wireless communications and fewer global energy resources has motivated research on energy-efficient cognitive radio networks for enhancing spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency simultaneously. In this article, we overview energyefficient non-cooperative cognitive radio networks from the micro, meso, and macro perspectives, where the micro view means how to design energy-efficient spectrum sensing algorithms for each individual secondary user, the meso view means how to coordinate non-cooperative secondary users to share spectrum efficiently, and the macro view means how to deploy cognitive radio networks in an energy-efficient approach. Coordinated beamforming (CBF) or coordinated scheduling is regarded as an effective means of mitigating the intercell interference (ICI) in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In this paper, a new CBF scheme is presented based on leakage-controlled minimum-mean-square-error (LC-MMSE) precoding. We use a regularized factor to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) of LC-MMSE and analyze its achievable throughput loss compared with the conventional minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) scheme. The results show that the upper bound of the achievable throughput loss increases as the number of serving users grows. A joint frequency and spatial coordination scheme is proposed as an effort to simplify the design of transmit beamforming weights by separating the objective functions that maximize the expected signal strength and minimize the interference leakage in different resource groups. System-level simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce the ICI, and it performs well even with imperfect channel-state information (CSI) at the transmitter. In this paper, we consider a secrecy relaying communication scenario where all nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. An eavesdropper has the access to the global channel state information (CSI), and all the other nodes only know the CSI not associated with the eavesdropper. A new secrecy transmission protocol is proposed, where the concept of interference alignment is combined with cooperative jamming to ensure that artificial noise from transmitters can be aligned at the destination, but not at the eavesdropper due to the randomness of wireless channels. Analytical results, such as ergodic secrecy rate and outage probability, are developed, from which more insightful understanding of the proposed protocol, such as multiplexing and diversity gains, can be obtained. A few special cases, where outage probability cannot be decreased to zero regardless of SNR, are also discussed. Code-hopping multiple access (CHMA) is a newly emerging multiple-access technique with the potential to offer high capacity. Unfortunately, orthogonality among user signals in existing CHMA schemes can be preserved only in synchronous channels under an assumption that neither multipath interference (MI) nor multiple-access interference (MAI) exists. Exploiting their ideal orthogonality, we apply orthogonal complementary codes to CHMA systems to overcome problems with existing CHMA schemes. In particular, we will show that the application of orthogonal complementary codes can significantly improve the performance of a CHMA system due to its unique collision-resistant capability. To deal with destructive collisions among spreading codes in CHMA systems, convolutional coding is employed in complementary-coded CHMA systems. The properties and bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed system are analyzed for both uplink and downlink applications, where the system may simultaneously suffer MI and MAI. Simulation results show that the complementary-coded CHMA with channel coding can provide much higher capacity than complementary-coded code-division multiple access (CDMA) systems in varying operational scenarios.
