We present the molecular gas content and interstellar medium conditions of MACS J0717_Az9, a strong gravitationally lensed z = 4.273, M * ≃ 2 × 109 M ⊙ star-forming galaxy with an unusually high (∼80%) obscured star formation fraction. We detect CO (4–3) in two independent lensed images, as well as [N ii ] 205 μ m, with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array. We derive a molecular gas mass of log 10 [ M H 2 (M ⊙) ] = 9.77 , making it moderately deficient in molecular gas compared to the lower-redshift gas fraction scaling relation. Leveraging photodissociation region (PDR) models, we combine our CO (4–3) measurements with existing measurements of the [C ii ] 158 μ m line and total infrared luminosity to model the PDR conditions. We find PDR conditions similar to those in local star-forming galaxies, with a mean hydrogen density log10[ n H cm−3] = 4.80 ± 0.39 and a mean radiation field strength log10[ G 0 Habing] = 2.83 ± 0.26. Based on Band 3 continuum data, we derive an upper limit on the intrinsic dust mass of log10[ M dust(M ⊙)] < 7.73, consistent with existing estimates. We use the 3D tilted-ring model fitting code 3D-Barolo to determine the kinematic properties of the CO (4–3) emitting gas. We find that it is rotationally dominated, with a V / σ = 4.6 ± 1.7, consistent with the kinematics of the [C ii ]. With PDR conditions remarkably similar to those in normal dusty star-forming galaxies at z < 0.2 and a stable molecular disk, our observations of Az9 suggest that the dust-obscured phase for a low-mass galaxy at z ∼ 4 is relatively long. Thus, Az9 may be representative of a more widespread population that has been missed owing to insufficiently deep existing millimeter surveys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electron densities in different locations of our galaxy are obtained in pulsar astronomy by dividing the dispersion measure (DM) by the distance of the pulsar to Earth. The properties of the interstellar plasma are related to its heating by cosmic rays. Following the present analysis, DM's measurements are obtained with different properties of the corresponding plasmas at different temperatures. (1) For relatively low temperatures (around and below 10,000 (K)), the state of molecular, atomic and ionized hydrogen is analyzed by the interstellar medium model with partially ionized plasma. In this region, various spectroscopic effects are obtained. (2) For temperatures above this limit, the interstellar gas is found to be a completely ionized medium, and this plasma is defined as warm ionized medium (WIM) plasma. We show in the first part of the paper that this plasma is transparent, as obtained from the solution of Saha's equation. The index of refraction of the WIM plasma is real, but the plasma can be observed by dispersion measurements. (3) For very high temperatures (around 1 million (K)), the plasma is defined as hot ionized medium, where X-rays are obtained. We concentrate in the present work on the analysis of WIM plasma. We calculate the mass densities of this plasma and compare it with dark matter mass densities, which are found to be larger. But some factors which may reduce this difference are discussed. Context. Hadronic interactions between cosmic rays (CRs) and interstellar gas have been probed in γ rays across the Galaxy. A fairly uniform CR distribution is observed up to a few hundred parsecs from the Sun, except in the Eridu cloud, which shows an unexplained 30–50% deficit in GeV to TeV CR flux. Aims. To explore the origin of this deficit, we studied the Reticulum cloud, which shares notable traits with Eridu: a comparable distance in the low-density region of the Local Valley and a filamentary structure of atomic hydrogen extending along a bundle of ordered magnetic-field lines that are steeply inclined to the Galactic plane. Methods. We measured the γ-ray emissivity per gas nucleon in the Reticulum cloud in the 0.16–63 GeV energy band using 14 years of Fermi-LAT data. We also derived interstellar properties that are important for CR propagation in both the Eridu and Reticulum clouds, at the same parsec scale. Results. The γ-ray emissivity in the Reticulum cloud is fully consistent with the average spectrum measured in the solar neighbourhood, but this emissivity, and therefore the CR flux, is 1.57 ± 0.09 times larger than in Eridu across the whole energy band. The difference cannot be attributed to uncertainties in gas mass. Nevertheless, we find that the two clouds are similar in many respects: both have magnetic-field strengths of a few micro-Gauss in the plane of the sky; both are in approximate equilibrium between magnetic and thermal pressures; they have similar turbulent velocities and sonic Mach numbers; and both show magnetic-field regularity with a dispersion in orientation lower than 10°–15° over large zones. The gas in Reticulum is colder and denser than in Eridu, but we find similar parallel diffusion coefficients around a few times 1028 cm2 s−1 in both clouds if CRs above 1 GV in rigidity diffuse on resonant, self-excited Alfvén waves that are damped by ion-neutral interactions. Conclusions. The loss of CRs in Eridu remains unexplained, but these two clouds provide important test cases to further study how magnetic turbulence, line tangling, and ion-neutral damping regulate CR diffusion in the dominant gas phase of the interstellar medium. HESS J1825 − 137 is one of the most powerful and luminous TeV gamma-ray pulsar wind nebulae, making it an excellent laboratory to study particle transportation around pulsars. We present a model of the (diffusive and advective) transport and radiative losses of electrons from the pulsar PSR J1826 − 1334 powering HESS J1825 − 137 using interstellar medium gas (ISM) data, soft photon fields, and a spatially varying magnetic field. We find that for the characteristic age of |$21\, \mathrm{k}\mathrm{yr}$|⁠ , PSR J1826 − 1334 is unable to meet the energy requirements to match the observed X-ray and gamma-ray emission. An older age of |$40\, \mathrm{k}\mathrm{yr}$|⁠ , together with an electron conversion efficiency of 0.14 and advective flow of v = 0.002 c , can reproduce the observed multiwavelength emission towards HESS J1825 − 137. A turbulent ISM with magnetic field of |$B=20 \,{\rm to}\, 60 \,\mathrm{\mu }{\rm G}$| to the north of HESS J1825 − 137 (as suggested by ISM observations) is required to prevent significant gamma-ray contamination towards the northern |$\mathrm{T}\mathrm{e\mathrm{V}}$| source HESS J1826 − 130. This work explores the mixing rate of metals in the interstellar medium (ISM), comparing observational constraints from our solar neighbourhood to high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of Milky Way (MW)-like galaxies. The mixing rate, described by the coefficient C, is varied in simulations between 0 and 0.05, with resultant simulated galaxies compared to observations of metallicity dispersion in young star clusters, H ii regions and neutral gas in the disc of the MW. A value of C between 0.003125 and 0.0125 is found to self-consistently match a range of observables, with a best estimate of C = 0.0064 ± 0.0004. We demonstrate that the relationship between metal dispersion in young stars, H ii regions and neutral gas, versus the coefficient C, can be described by a power law. These constrained mixing rates infer a comparatively well-mixed ISM in the solar neighbourhood, at odds with some recent observations that have reported a highly inhomogeneous ISM. The degree of mixing suggested by this work is lower than what often employed in many hydrodynamical simulations. The youngest known Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G1.9+0.3 has high-velocity supernova shock beyond 10000 km s−1, and it is considered to be one of the major candidates of a PeVatron. Despite these outstanding properties, the surrounding interstellar matter of this object is poorly understood. We investigated the interstellar gas toward G1.9+0.3 using the 12CO(J = 3−2) data with the angular resolution of 15″ obtained by the CHIMPS2 survey by the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, and discovered three individual clouds at −1, 7, and 45 km s−1. From its morphological and velocity structures, the −1 km s−1 cloud, having the largest velocity width >20 km s−1 and located at the distance of the Galactic Center, is possibly associated with the SNR. The associated cloud shows a cavity structure both in space and velocity and coincides well with the SNR. We found that the associated cloud has higher column densities toward three bright, radio synchrotron-emitted rims where the radial expansion velocity of the supernova shock is decelerated, and the cloud is faint in the other parts of the SNR. This is the first direct evidence indicating that the highly anisotropic expansion of G1.9+0.3 observed by previous studies results from the deceleration by the interaction between the supernova shock and surrounding dense interstellar medium. We have used spectra of the Spitzer Space Telescope to conduct a search for the aromatic amino acid tryptophan in the interstellar gas of the young star cluster IC 348. For all the strongest mid-infrared (mid-IR) laboratory bands of tryptophan, we have found counterpart emission lines in the observed spectrum which are consistent in wavelength and strength with the laboratory measurements. Assuming that the detected emission lines are due to tryptophan and using the measured fluxes, we estimate a tryptophan column density in the line of sight of the core of IC 348 in the range 109–1011 cm−2. The observed emission lines are also found in the combined spectrum of >30 interstellar locations obtained in diverse unrelated star-forming regions observed by Spitzer. This could be an indication that the molecule causing the emission is widespread in interstellar space. Future high spectral resolution mid-IR searches for proteinogenic amino acids in protostars, protoplanetary discs, and in the interstellar medium will be key to study an exogenous origin of meteoritic amino acids and to understand how the pre-biotic conditions for life were set in the early Earth. Bow shocks are produced in the local interstellar medium by the passage of fast stars from the Galactic thin-disk and thick-disk populations with velocities V * = 40–80 km s−1. Stellar transits of local H i clouds occur every 3500–7000 yr on average and last between 104 and 105 yr. There could be 10–20 active bow shocks around low-mass stars inside clouds within 15 pc of the Sun. At local cloud distances of 3–10 pc, their turbulent wakes have transverse radial extents R wake ≈ 100–300 au, angular sizes 10″–100″, and Ly α surface brightnesses of 2–8 R in gas with total hydrogen density n H ≈ 0.1 cm−3 and V * = 40–80 km s−1. These transit wakes may cover an area fraction f A ≈ (R wake/ R cl) ≈ 10−3 of local H i clouds and be detectable in IR (dust), UV (Ly α, two-photon), or nonthermal radio emission. Turbulent heating in these wakes could produce the observed elevated rotational populations of H2 (J ≥ 2) and influence the endothermic formation of CH+ in diffuse interstellar gas at T > 103 K. Interstellar shocks, a key element of stellar feedback processes, shape the structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) and are essential for the chemistry, thermodynamics, and kinematics of interstellar gas. Powerful, high-velocity shocks are driven by stellar winds, young supernova explosions, more evolved supernova remnants, cloud–cloud collisions, and protostellar outflows, whereas the existence and origin of much-lower-velocity shocks (≲10 km s−1) are not understood. Direct observational evidence for interstellar shocks in diffuse and translucent ISM environments has been especially lacking. We present the most sensitive survey to date of SiO—often considered an unambiguous tracer of interstellar shocks—in absorption, obtained with the Northern Extended Millimeter Array interferometer. We detect SiO in five of eight directions probing diffuse and translucent environments without ongoing star formation. Our results demonstrate that SiO formation in the diffuse ISM (i.e., in the absence of significant star formation and stellar feedback) is more widespread and effective than previously reported. The observed SiO line widths are all ≲4 km s−1, excluding high-velocity shocks as a formation mechanism. Yet, the SiO abundances we detect are mostly 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than those typically assumed in quiescent environments and are often accompanied by other molecular transitions whose column densities cannot be explained with UV-dominated chemical models. Our results challenge the traditional view of SiO production via stellar feedback sources and emphasize the need for observational constraints on the distribution of Si in the gas phase and grain mantles, which are crucial for understanding the physics of grain processing and the diffuse interstellar chemistry. Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the long-wavelength dust continuum are used to estimate the gas masses in a sample of 708 star-forming galaxies at z = 0.3−4.5. We determine the dependence of gas masses and star formation efficiencies (SFEs; SFR per unit gas mass) on redshift (z), M *, and star formation rate (SFR) relative to the main sequence (MS). We find that 70% of the increase in SFRs of the MS is due to the increased gas masses at earlier epochs, while 30% is due to increased efficiency of star formation (SF). For galaxies above the MS this is reversed—with 70% of the increased SFR relative to the MS being due to elevated SFEs. Thus, the major evolution of star formation activity at early epochs is driven by increased gas masses, while the starburst activity taking galaxies above the MS is due to enhanced triggering of star formation (likely due to galactic merging). The interstellar gas peaks at z = 2 and dominates the stellar mass down to z = 1.2. Accretion rates needed to maintain continuity of the MS evolution reach >100 M ⊙ yr−1 at z > 2. The galactic gas contents are likely the driving determinant for both the rise in SF and AGN activity from z = 5 to their peak at z = 2 and subsequent fall at lower z. We suggest that for self-gravitating clouds with supersonic turbulence, cloud collisions and the filamentary structure of the clouds regulate the star formation activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a commonly used indicator of star formation activity in galaxies, also has the potential to serve as an effective empirical tracer of molecular gas. We use a sample of 19 nearby galaxies with spatially resolved mid-infrared Spitzer spectroscopy, multiwavelength optical and mid-infrared imaging, and millimeter interferometric CO(1–0) maps to investigate the feasibility of using PAH emission as an empirical proxy to estimate molecular gas mass. PAH emission correlates strongly with CO emission on subkiloparsec scales over the diverse environments probed by our sample of star-forming galaxies and low-luminosity active galactic nuclei. The tight observed correlation, likely a consequence of photoelectronic heating of the diffuse interstellar gas by the PAHs, permits us to derive an empirical calibration to estimate molecular gas mass from the luminosity of PAH emission that has a total scatter of only ∼0.2–0.25 dex. Mid-infrared bands sensitive to PAH emission (e.g., the Spitzer/IRAC4 and WISE/W3 filters) can also be used as a highly effective substitute for this purpose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ram pressure stripping (RPS) is known to be a key environmental effect that can remove interstellar gas from galaxies in a cluster. The RPS process is commonly described as a competition between the ram pressure by the intracluster medium and the anchoring pressure on the interstellar medium by the gravitational potential of a galaxy. However, the actual gas stripping process can be more complicated due to the complexity of gas physics such as compression and geometrical self-shielding as well as cooling and heating. In order to verify how well the observed signatures of the RPS process can be understood as simple momentum transfer, we compare the stripping radii of Virgo cluster galaxies in different stages of RPS measured from the H  i observation with the predicted gas truncation radii for the given conditions. For the sample undergoing active RPS, we generally find good agreements between predictions and observations within a measurement uncertainty. On the other hand, galaxies likely in the early or later RPS stage and/or the ones with signs of environmental impacts other than RPS such as tidal interaction or starvation show some discrepancies. Our results imply that the conventional RPS relation works reasonably well in a broad sense when RPS is the most dominant process and the galaxy is located where the surrounding environment can be well defined. We investigate the origin in the early Solar System of the short-lived radionuclide 244 Pu (with a half life of 80 Myr) produced by the r a p i d (r) neutron-capture process. We consider two large sets of r-process nucleosynthesis models and analyse if the origin of 244 Pu in the ESS is consistent with that of the other r and s l o w (s) neutron-capture process radioactive nuclei. Uncertainties on the r-process models come from both the nuclear physics input and the astrophysical site. The former strongly affects the ratios of isotopes of close mass ( 129 I/ 127 I, 244 Pu/ 238 U, and 247 Pu/ 235 U). The 129 I/ 247 Cm ratio, instead, which involves isotopes of a very different mass, is much more variable than those listed above and is more affected by the physics of the astrophysical site. We consider possible scenarios for the evolution of the abundances of these radioactive nuclei in the galactic interstellar medium and verify under which scenarios and conditions solutions can be found for the origin of 244 Pu that are consistent with the origin of the other isotopes. Solutions are generally found for all the possible different regimes controlled by the interval (δ) between additions from the source to the parcel of interstellar medium gas that ended up in the Solar System, relative to decay timescales. If r-process ejecta in interstellar medium are mixed within a relatively small area (leading to a long δ), we derive that the last event that explains the 129 I and 247 Cm abundances in the early Solar System can also account for the abundance of 244 Pu. Due to its longer half life, however, 244 Pu may have originated from a few events instead of one only. If r-process ejecta in interstellar medium are mixed within a relatively large area (leading to a short δ), we derive that the time elapsed from the formation of the molecular cloud to the formation of the Sun was 9-16 Myr. To determine the chemical composition of gases in molecular clouds, the oxygen-bearing systems C n O are needed as probe elements. The pentacarbon monoxide C5O was recently detected in TMC-1, and in order to derive accurate physical conditions from its rotational transitions, calculation of rate coefficients of C5O(1Σ+) induced by collision with He are performed for thermal temperature below 100 K. These calculations are based on a new 2D potential energy surface (2D-PES) obtained from the explicit correlated coupled cluster with single, double, and pertubative triple excitation (ccsd(t)-f12) ab initio approach associated with aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets. The C5O–He PES presents two minima below its dissociation limit with a well depths of −59.321 and −53.059 cm−1. By mean of this PES, the integral cross sections are calculated in the close-coupling quantum time independant formalism for |$E\le 500 \, {\rm cm}^{-1}$| and J ≤ 20. The de-excitation rate coefficients are obtained after averaging these cross sections at low temperatures. We expect that the new collisional data will allow accurate determination of the C5O abundance in the interstellar medium, as well as the interpretation of its emission lines. The interstellar medium (ISM) is a turbulent, highly structured multiphase medium. State-of-the-art cosmological simulations of the formation of galactic discs usually lack the resolution to accurately resolve those multiphase structures. However, small-scale density structures play an important role in the life cycle of the ISM, and determine the fraction of cold, dense gas, the amount of star formation, and the amount of radiation and momentum leakage from cloud-embedded sources. Here, we derive a statistical model to calculate the unresolved small-scale ISM density structure from coarse-grained, volume-averaged quantities such as the gas clumping factor , |$\mathcal {C}$|⁠ , and mean density 〈ρ〉 V . Assuming that the large-scale ISM density is statistically isotropic, we derive a relation between the three-dimensional clumping factor, |$\mathcal {C}_\rho$|⁠ , and the clumping factor of the 4 |$\pi$| column density distribution on the cloud surface, |$\mathcal {C}_\Sigma$|⁠ , and find |$\mathcal {C}_\Sigma =\mathcal {C}_\rho ^{2/3}$|⁠. Applying our model to calculate the covering fraction, i.e. the 4 |$\pi$| sky distribution of optically thick sightlines around sources inside interstellar gas clouds, we demonstrate that small-scale density structures lead to significant differences at fixed physical ISM density. Our model predicts that gas clumping increases the covering fraction by up to 30 per cent at low ISM densities compared to a uniform medium. On the other hand, at larger ISM densities, gas clumping suppresses the covering fraction and leads to increased scatter such that covering fractions can span a range from 20 per cent to 100 per cent at fixed ISM density. Our understanding of the interaction of the large-scale heliosphere with the local interstellar medium (LISM) has undergone a profound change since the very earliest analyses of the problem. In part, the revisions have been a consequence of ever-improving and widening observational results, especially those that identified the entrance of interstellar material and gas into the heliosphere. Accompanying these observations was the identification of the basic underlying physics of how neutral interstellar gas and interstellar charged particles of different energies, up to and including interstellar dust grains, interacted with the temporal flows and electromagnetic fields of the heliosphere. The incorporation of these various basic effects into global models of the interaction, whether focused on neutral interstellar gas and pickup ions, energetic particles such as anomalous and galactic cosmic rays, or magnetic fields and large-scale flows, has profoundly changed our view of how the heliosphere and LISM interact. This article presents a brief history of the conceptual and observation evolution of our understanding of the interaction of the heliosphere with the local interstellar medium, up until approximately 1996. Interstellar pickup ions are an ubiquitous and thermodynamically important component of the solar wind plasma in the heliosphere. These PUIs are born from the ionization of the interstellar neutral gas, consisting of hydrogen, helium, and trace amounts of heavier elements, in the solar wind as the heliosphere moves through the local interstellar medium. As cold interstellar neutral atoms become ionized, they form an energetic ring beam distribution comoving with the solar wind. Subsequent scattering in pitch angle by intrinsic and self-generated turbulence and their advection with the radially expanding solar wind leads to the formation of a filled-shell PUI distribution, whose density and pressure relative to the thermal solar wind ions grows with distance from the Sun. This paper reviews the history of in situ measurements of interstellar PUIs in the heliosphere. Starting with the first detection in the 1980s, interstellar PUIs were identified by their highly nonthermal distribution with a cutoff at twice the solar wind speed. Measurements of the PUI distribution shell cutoff and the He focusing cone, a downwind region of increased density formed by the solar gravity, have helped characterize the properties of the interstellar gas from near-Earth vantage points. The preferential heating of interstellar PUIs compared to the core solar wind has become evident in the existence of suprathermal PUI tails, the nonadiabatic cooling index of the PUI distribution, and PUIs' mediation of interplanetary shocks. Unlike the Voyager and Pioneer spacecraft, New Horizon's Solar Wind Around Pluto (SWAP) instrument is taking the only direct measurements of interstellar PUIs in the outer heliosphere, currently out to ∼ 47 au from the Sun or halfway to the heliospheric termination shock. Observations of H i Lyman α, the brightest UV emission line of late-type stars, are critical for understanding stellar chromospheres and transition regions, modeling photochemistry in exoplanet atmospheres, and measuring the abundances of neutral hydrogen and deuterium in the interstellar medium. Yet Lyα observations are notoriously challenging owing to severe attenuation from interstellar gas, hindering our understanding of this important emission line's basic morphology. We present high-resolution far- and near-UV spectroscopy of five G, K, and M dwarfs with radial velocities large enough to Doppler-shift the stellar Lyα emission line away from much of the interstellar attenuation, allowing the line core to be directly observed. We detect self-reversal in the Lyα emission-line core for all targets, and we show that the self-reversal depth decreases with increasing surface gravity. Mg ii self-reversed emission-line profiles provide some useful information to constrain the Lyα line core, but the differences are significant enough that Mg ii cannot be used directly as an intrinsic Lyα template during reconstructions. We show that reconstructions that neglect self-reversal could overestimate intrinsic Lyα fluxes by as much as 60%–100% for G and K dwarfs and 40%–170% for M dwarfs. The five stars of our sample have low magnetic activity and subsolar metallicity; a larger sample size is needed to determine how sensitive these results are to these factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We characterize mass, momentum, energy, and metal outflow rates of multiphase galactic winds in a suite of FIRE-2 cosmological 'zoom-in' simulations from the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. We analyse simulations of low-mass dwarfs, intermediate-mass dwarfs, Milky Way-mass haloes, and high-redshift massive haloes. Consistent with previous work, we find that dwarfs eject about 100 times more gas from their interstellar medium (ISM) than they form in stars, while this mass 'loading factor' drops below one in massive galaxies. Most of the mass is carried by the hot phase (>105 K) in massive haloes and the warm phase (103−105 K) in dwarfs; cold outflows (<103 K) are negligible except in high-redshift dwarfs. Energy, momentum, and metal loading factors from the ISM are of order unity in dwarfs and significantly lower in more massive haloes. Hot outflows have 2−5 × higher specific energy than needed to escape from the gravitational potential of dwarf haloes; indeed, in dwarfs, the mass, momentum, and metal outflow rates increase with radius whereas energy is roughly conserved, indicating swept up halo gas. Burst-averaged mass loading factors tend to be larger during more powerful star formation episodes and when the inner halo is not virialized, but we see effectively no trend with the dense ISM gas fraction. We discuss how our results can guide future controlled numerical experiments that aim to elucidate the key parameters governing galactic winds and the resulting associated preventative feedback. We present a generic mechanism for the thermal damping of compressive waves in the interstellar medium (ISM), occurring due to radiative cooling. We solve for the dispersion relation of magnetosonic waves in a two-fluid (ion-neutral) system in which density- and temperature-dependent heating and cooling mechanisms are present. We use this dispersion relation, in addition to an analytic approximation for the nonlinear turbulent cascade, to model dissipation of weak magnetosonic turbulence. We show that in some ISM conditions, the cutoff wavelength for magnetosonic turbulence becomes tens to hundreds of times larger when the thermal damping is added to the regular ion-neutral damping. We also run numerical simulations, which confirm that this effect has a dramatic impact on cascade of compressive wave modes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermal instability plays a crucial role in the formation of multiphase structures and their dynamics in the interstellar medium, and is a leading theory for cold cloud creation in various astrophysical environments. In this paper, we use 2D simulations to investigate thermal instability under the influence of various initial conditions and physical processes. We experiment with Gaussian random field (GRF) density perturbations of different initial power spectra. We also enrol thermal conduction and physical viscosity in isotropic hydrodynamic and anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. We find that the initial GRF spectral index α has a dramatic impact on the pure hydrodynamic development of thermal instability, influencing the size, number, and motions of clouds. Cloud fragmentation happens due to two mechanisms: tearing and contraction rebound. In the runs with isotropic conduction and viscosity, the structures and dynamics of the clouds are dominated by evaporation and condensation flows in the non-linear regime, and the flow speed is regulated by viscosity. Cloud disruptions happen as a result of the Darrieus–Landau instability. However, at very late times, all individual clouds merge into one cold structure in all hydrodynamic runs. In the MHD case, the cloud structure is determined by both the initial perturbations and the initial magnetic field strength. In high-β runs, anisotropic conduction causes dense filaments to align with the local magnetic fields and the field direction can become reoriented. We report the results of ultraviolet (UV) and optical photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT 2019qiz. Our follow-up observations started <10 days after the source began to brighten in the optical and lasted for a period of six months. Our late-time host-dominated spectrum indicates that the host galaxy likely harbors a weak active galactic nucleus. The initial Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectrum of AT 2019qiz exhibits an iron and low-ionization broad absorption line (FeLoBAL) system that is seen for the first time in a TDE. This spectrum also bears a striking resemblance to that of Gaia16apd, a superluminous supernova. Our observations provide insights into the outflow properties in TDEs and show evidence for a connection between TDEs and engine-powered supernovae at early phases, as originally suggested by Metzger & Stone. In a time frame of 50 days, the UV spectra of AT 2019qiz started to resemble those of previous TDEs with only high-ionization broad absorption lines. The change in UV spectral signatures is accompanied by a decrease in the outflow velocity, which began at 15,000 km s−1 and decelerated to ∼10,000 km s−1. A similar evolution in the Hα emission-line width further supports the speculation that the broad Balmer emission lines are formed in TDE outflows. In addition, we detect narrow absorption features on top of the FeLoBAL signatures in the early HST UV spectrum of AT 2019qiz. The measured H i column density corresponds to a Lyman-limit system, whereas the metal absorption lines (such as N v , C iv , Fe ii , and Mg ii) are likely probing the circumnuclear gas and interstellar medium in the host galaxy. We review recent progress in elucidating the relationship between high-energy radiation and the interstellar medium (ISM) in young supernova remnants (SNRs) with ages of ∼2000 yr, focusing in particular on RX J1713.7−3946 and RCW 86. Both SNRs emit strong nonthermal X-rays and TeV γ -rays, and they contain clumpy distributions of interstellar gas that includes both atomic and molecular hydrogen. We find that shock–cloud interactions provide a viable explanation for the spatial correlation between the X-rays and ISM. In these interactions, the supernova shocks hit the typically pc-scale dense cores, generating a highly turbulent velocity field that amplifies the magnetic field up to 0.1–1 mG. This amplification leads to enhanced nonthermal synchrotron emission around the clumps, whereas the cosmic-ray electrons do not penetrate the clumps. Accordingly, the nonthermal X-rays exhibit a spatial distribution similar to that of the ISM on the pc scale, while they are anticorrelated at sub-pc scales. These results predict that hadronic γ -rays can be emitted from the dense cores, resulting in a spatial correspondence between the γ -rays and the ISM. The current pc-scale resolution of γ -ray observations is too low to resolve this correspondence. Future γ -ray observations with the Cherenkov Telescope Array will be able to resolve the sub-pc-scale γ -ray distribution and provide clues to the origin of these cosmic γ -rays. We construct empirical models of star-forming galaxy evolution assuming that individual galaxies evolve along well-known scaling relations between stellar mass, gas mass, and star formation rate following a simple description of chemical evolution. We test these models by a comparison with observations and detailed Magneticum high-resolution hydrodynamic cosmological simulations. Galaxy star formation rates, stellar masses, gas masses, ages, interstellar medium, and stellar metallicities are compared. It is found that these simple look-back models capture many of the crucial aspects of galaxy evolution reasonably well. Their key assumption of a redshift-dependent power-law relationship between galaxy interstellar medium gas mass and stellar mass is in agreement with the outcome of the complex Magneticum simulations. Star formation rates decline toward lower redshift not because galaxies are running out of gas, but because the fraction of the cold interstellar medium gas, which is capable of producing stars, becomes significantly smaller. Gas accretion rates in both model approaches are of the same order of magnitude. Metallicity in the Magneticum simulations increases with the ratio of stellar mass to gas mass as predicted by the look-back models. The mass–metallicity relationships agree, and the star formation rate dependence of these relationships is also reproduced. We conclude that these simple models provide a powerful tool for constraining and interpreting more complex models based on cosmological simulations and for population synthesis studies analyzing the integrated spectra of stellar populations. Observations of the four 2Π3/2,   J  = 3/2 ground state transitions of the hydroxyl radical (OH) have emerged as an informative tracer of molecular gas in the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM). We discuss an OH spectral feature known as the 'flip', in which the satellite lines at 1612 and 1720 MHz flip – one from emission to absorption and the other the reverse – across a closely blended double feature. We highlight 30 examples of the flip from the literature, 27 of which exhibit the same orientation with respect to velocity: the 1720-MHz line is seen in emission at more negative velocities. These same examples are also observed towards bright background continuum, many (perhaps all) show stimulated emission, and 23 of these are coincident in on-sky position and velocity with H  ii  radio recombination lines. To explain these remarkable correlations, we propose that the 1720-MHz stimulated emission originates in heated and compressed post-shock gas expanding away from a central H  ii  region, which collides with cooler and more diffuse gas hosting the 1612-MHz stimulated emission. The foreground gas dominates the spectrum due to the bright central continuum; hence, the expanding post-shock gas is blue-shifted relative to the stationary pre-shock gas. We employ non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) excitation modelling to examine this scenario and find that indeed FIR emission from warm dust adjacent to the H  ii  region radiatively pumps the 1612-MHz line in the diffuse, cool gas ahead of the expanding shock front, while collisional pumping in the warm, dense shocked gas inverts the 1720-MHz line. Galactic cosmic rays (CRs) are believed to be accelerated at supernova remnant (SNR) shocks. In the hadronic scenario, the TeV gamma-ray emission from SNRs originates from decaying pions that are produced in collisions of the interstellar gas and CRs. Using CR-magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we show that magnetic obliquity-dependent shock acceleration is able to reproduce the observed TeV gamma-ray morphology of SNRs such as Vela Jr and SN1006 solely by varying the magnetic morphology. This implies that gamma-ray bright regions result from quasi-parallel shocks (i.e. when the shock propagates at a narrow angle to the upstream magnetic field), which are known to efficiently accelerate CR protons, and that gamma-ray dark regions point to quasi-perpendicular shock configurations. Comparison of the simulated gamma-ray morphology to observations allows us to constrain the magnetic coherence scale λ B around Vela Jr and SN1006 to |$\lambda _B \simeq 13_{-4.3}^{+13}$|  pc and |$\lambda _B \gt 200_{-40}^{+50}$|  pc, respectively, where the ambient magnetic field of SN1006 is consistent with being largely homogeneous. We find consistent pure hadronic and mixed hadronic-leptonic models that both reproduce the multifrequency spectra from the radio to TeV gamma-rays and match the observed gamma-ray morphology. Finally, to capture the propagation of an SNR shock in a clumpy interstellar medium, we study the interaction of a shock with a dense cloud with numerical simulations and analytics. We construct an analytical gamma-ray model for a core collapse SNR propagating through a structured interstellar medium, and show that the gamma-ray luminosity is only biased by 30 per cent for realistic parameters. We present ALMA Band 7 data of the [C ii ] emission line and underlying far-IR (FIR) continuum for 12 luminous quasars at powered by fast-growing supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Our total sample consists of 18 quasars, 12 of which are presented here for the first time. The new sources consist of six Herschel/SPIRE-detected systems, which we define as "FIR-bright" sources, and six Herschel/SPIRE-undetected systems, which we define as "FIR-faint" sources. We determine dust masses for the quasars hosts of , implying interstellar medium gas masses comparable to the dynamical masses derived from the [C ii ] kinematics. It is found that, on average, the Mg ii line is blueshifted by with respect to the [C ii ] emission line, which is also observed when complementing our observations with data from the literature. We find that all of our FIR-bright subsample and most of the FIR-faint objects lie above the main sequence of star-forming galaxies at. We detect companion submillimeter galaxies for two sources, both FIR-faint, with a range of projected distances of kpc and typical velocity shifts of from the quasar hosts. The EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) is a cryogenic balloon-borne instrument that will survey galaxy and star formation history over cosmological timescales. Rather than identifying individual objects, EXCLAIM will be a pathfinder to demonstrate an intensity mapping approach, which measures the cumulative redshifted line emission. EXCLAIM will operate at 420–540 GHz with a spectral resolution R = 512 to measure the integrated CO and [CII] in redshift windows spanning 0 < z < 3.5 . CO and [CII] line emissions are key tracers of the gas phases in the interstellar medium involved in star formation processes. EXCLAIM will shed light on questions such as why the star formation rate declines at z < 2 , despite continued clustering of the dark matter. The instrument will employ an array of six superconducting integrated grating-analog spectrometers (μ -Spec) coupled to microwave kinetic inductance detectors. We introduce the Stars and MUltiphase Gas in GaLaxiEs – SMUGGLE model, an explicit and comprehensive stellar feedback model for the moving-mesh code arepo. This novel sub-resolution model resolves the multiphase gas structure of the interstellar medium and self-consistently generates gaseous outflows. The model implements crucial aspects of stellar feedback including photoionization, radiation pressure, energy, and momentum injection from stellar winds and from supernovae. We explore this model in high-resolution isolated simulations of Milky Way like disc galaxies. Stellar feedback regulates star formation to the observed level and naturally captures the establishment of a Kennicutt–Schmidt relation. This result is achieved independent of the numerical mass and spatial resolution of the simulations. Gaseous outflows are generated with average mass loading factors of the order of unity. Strong outflow activity is correlated with peaks in the star formation history of the galaxy with evidence that most of the ejected gas eventually rains down on to the disc in a galactic fountain flow that sustains late-time star formation. Finally, the interstellar gas in the galaxy shows a distinct multiphase distribution with a coexistence of cold, warm, and hot phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The properties of dust in the interstellar medium (ISM) nearest the Sun are poorly understood because the low column densities of dust toward nearby stars induce little photometric reddening, rendering the grains largely undetectable. Stellar polarimetry offers one pathway to deducing the properties of this diffuse material. Here we present multi-wavelength aperture polarimetry measurements of seven bright stars chosen to probe interstellar polarization near the edge of the Local Hot Bubble (LHB) – an amorphous region of relatively low-density interstellar gas and dust extending ∼70–150 pc from the Sun. The measurements were taken using the HIgh Precision Polarimetric Instrument (HIPPI) on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope. HIPPI is an aperture stellar polarimeter with a demonstrated sensitivity of 4.3 parts-per-million (ppm). Of the stars observed two are polarized to a much greater degree than the others; they have a wavelength of maximum polarization (λmax) of ∼550 ± 20 nm – similar to that of stars beyond the LHB – and we conclude that they are in the wall of the LHB. The remaining five stars have polarizations of ∼70–160 ppm, of these four have a much bluer λmax, ∼350 ± 50 nm. Bluer values of λmax may indicate grains shocked during the evolution of the Loop I Superbubble. The remaining star, HD 4150 is not well fit by a Serkowski curve, and may be intrinsically polarized. Context. Protonated molecular species have been proven to be abundant in the interstellar gas. This class of molecules is also pivotal for the determination of important physical parameters for the evolution of the interstellar medium (e.g. gas ionisation fraction) or as tracers of non-polar species which are not directly observable. The identification of these molecular species through radioastronomical observations is directly linked to precise laboratory spectral characterisation. Aims. The goal of the present work is to extend the laboratory measurements of the pure rotational spectrum of the ground electronic state of protonated carbonyl sulfide (HSCO+) and its deuterium substituted isotopomer (DSCO+). At the same time, we show how implementing different laboratory techniques allows for the determination of different spectroscopical properties of asymmetric-top protonated species. Methods. Three different high-resolution experiments were used in conjunction to detect for the first time the b-type rotational spectrum of HSCO+, and to extend, well into the sub-millimetre region, the a-type spectrum of the same molecular species and DSCO+. The electronic ground-state of both ions was investigated in the 273–405 GHz frequency range, allowing for the detection of 60 and 50 new rotational transitions for HSCO+ and DSCO+, respectively. Results. The combination of our new measurements with the three rotational transitions previously observed in the microwave region permits the rest frequencies of the most astronomically relevant transitions to be predicted to better than 100 kHz for both HSCO+ and DSCO+ up to 500 GHz, equivalent to better than 60 m s−1 in terms of equivalent radial velocity. Conclusions. The present work illustrates the importance of using different laboratory techniques to spectroscopically characterise a protonated species at high frequency. Each instrument addressed a complementary part of the same spectroscopic challenge, demonstrating the potential of such an approach for future studies of similar reactive species. Neutral and ionic nitrogen sulfide, NS, are closely connected with the chemistry of the larger nitrogen-containing molecular species. NS+ cation was recently detected in some regions of the interstellar medium, where a small abundance is estimated. In order to help for the identification of this cation in other sources, we present the collision rates for the rotational (de-)excitation of NS+ by He. They are obtained using quantum scattering calculations for collision energies between 1.26 and 1400 cm−1, followed by averaging of the cross-sections over a Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution. These quantum nuclear motion treatments are performed on a new 3D potential energy surface (PES) for the NS+(X1Σ+) − He weakly bound complex. This PES is generated in Jacobi coordinates and using the explicitly correlated coupled cluster method (CCSD(T)-F12) in conjunction with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set. Afterwards, rate constants for rotational levels of NS+ up to 10 and temperatures in the range of 2–300K are deduced. Particularly, the 3–2 transition, recently observed in the surveys, is found to be predominant at very low temperatures, whereas the 5–4 transition is predicted to dominate at higher temperatures, which may be used for the identification of this cation in hot media. Similarity solutions are examined for the frequency-integrated relativistic radiation-hydrodynamical flows, which are described by the comoving quantities. The flows are vertical plane-parallel time-dependent ones with a gray opacity coefficient. For adequate boundary conditions, the flows are accelerated in a somewhat homologous manner, but terminate at some singular locus, which originates from the pathological behavior in relativistic radiation moment equations truncated in finite orders. Quantitative understanding of the interstellar medium requires knowledge of its physical conditions. Low-frequency carbon radio recombination lines (CRRLs) trace cold interstellar gas and can be used to determine its physical conditions (e.g. electron temperature and density). In this work, we present spatially resolved observations of the low-frequency (≤390 MHz) CRRLs centred around C268α, C357α, C494α, and C539α towards Cassiopeia A on scales of ≤1.2 pc.We compare the spatial distribution of CRRLs with other interstellar medium tracers. This comparison reveals a spatial offset between the peak of the CRRLs and other tracers, which is very characteristic for photodissociation regions and that we take as evidence for CRRLs being preferentially detected from the surfaces of molecular clouds. Using the CRRLs, we constrain the gas electron temperature and density. These constraints on the gas conditions suggest variations of less than a factor of 2 in pressure over ∼1 pc scales, and an average hydrogen density of 200-470 cm-3. From the electron temperature and density maps, we also constrain the ionized carbon emission measure, column density, and path length. Based on these, the hydrogen column density is larger than 1022 cm-2, with a peak of ∼4 × 1022 cm-2 towards the south of Cassiopeia A. Towards the southern peak, the line-of-sight length is ∼40 pc over a ∼2 pc wide structure, which implies that the gas is a thin surface layer on a large (molecular) cloud that is only partially intersected by Cassiopeia A. These observations highlight the utility of CRRLs as tracers of low-density extended HI and CO-dark gas halo's around molecular clouds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Galactic outflows regulate the amount of gas galaxies convert into stars. However, it is difficult to measure the mass outflows remove because they span a large range of temperatures and phases. Here, we study the rest-frame ultraviolet spectrum of a lensed galaxy at ɀ ~ 2.9 with prominent interstellar absorption lines from OI, tracing neutral gas, up to OVI, tracing transitional phase gas. The OVI profile mimics weak low-ionization profiles at low velocities, and strong saturated profiles at high velocities. These trends indicate that OVI gas is co-spatial with the low-ionization gas. Further, at velocities blueward of -200 km s-1 the column density of the low-ionization outflow rapidly drops while the OVI column density rises, suggesting that OVI is created as the low-ionization gas is destroyed. Photoionization models do not reproduce the observed OVI, but adequately match the low-ionization gas, indicating that the phases have different formation mechanisms. Photoionized outflows are more massive than OVI outflows for most of the observed velocities, although the OVI mass outflow rate exceeds the photoionized outflow at velocities above the galaxy's escape velocity. Therefore, most gas capable of escaping the galaxy is in a hot outflow phase. We suggest that the OVI absorption is a temporary by-product of conduction transferring mass from the photoionized phase to an unobserved hot wind, and discuss how this mass-loading impacts the observed circum-galactic medium. As new concepts of sending interstellar spacecraft to the nearest stars are now being investigated by various research teams, crucial questions about the timing of such a vast financial and labour investment arise. If humanity could build high-speed interstellar lightsails and reach α Centauri 20 yr after launch, would it be better to wait a few years, then take advantage of further technology improvements and arrive earlier despite waiting? The risk of being overtaken by a future, faster probe has been described earlier as the incentive trap. Based on 211 yr of historical data, we find that the speed growth of artificial vehicles, from steam-driven locomotives to Voyager 1, is much faster than previously believed, about 4.72 per cent annually or a doubling every 15 yr. We derive the mathematical framework to calculate the minimum of the wait time to launch t plus travel time Τ (t) and extend it into the relativistic regime. We show that the t + Τ (t) minimum disappears for nearby targets. There is no use of waiting once we can reach an object within about 20 yr of travel, irrespective of the actual speed. In terms of speed, the t + Τ (t) minimum for a travel to α Centauri occurs at 19.6 per cent the speed of light (c), in agreement with the 20 per cent c proposed by the Breakthrough Starshot initiative. If interstellar travel at 20 per cent c could be achieved within 45 yr from today and the kinetic energy be increased at a rate consistent with the historical record, then humans can reach the 10 most nearby stars within 100 yr from today. We have investigated properties of the interstellar medium in interacting galaxies in early and mid stages using mapping data of 12CO(J = 1-0) and HI. Assuming the standard CO–H2 conversion factor, we found no difference in molecular gas mass, atomic gas mass, and total gas mass (the sum of atomic and molecular gas mass) between interacting galaxies and isolated galaxies. However, interacting galaxies have a higher global molecular gas fraction fglobalmol (the ratio ofmolecular gas mass to total gas mass averaged over a whole galaxy) at 0.71±0.15 than isolated galaxies (0.52±0.18). The distribution of the local molecular gas fraction fmol, the ratio of the surface density of molecular gas to that of the total gas, is different from the distribution in typical isolated galaxies. By a pixel-to-pixel comparison, isolated spiral galaxies show a gradual increase in fmol along the surface density of total gas until it is saturated at 1.0, while interacting galaxies show no clear relation. We performed pixel-to-pixel theoretical model fits by varying metallicity and external pressure. According to the model fitting, external pressure can explain the trend of fmol in the interacting galaxies. Assuming half of the standard CO–H2 conversion factor for interacting galaxies, the results of pixel-to-pixel theoretical model fitting get worse than adopting the standard conversion factor, although fglobalmol of interacting galaxies (0.62±0.17) becomes the same as in isolated galaxies. We conclude that external pressure occurs due to the shock prevailing over a whole galaxy or due to collisions between giant molecular clouds even in the early stage of the interaction. The external pressure accelerates an efficient transition from atomic gas to molecular gas. Regarding the chemical timescale, high fmol can be achieved at the very early stage of interaction even if the shock induced by the collision of galaxies ionizes interstellar gas. Holes and clumps in the interstellar gas of dwarf irregular galaxies are gravitational scattering centres that heat field stars and change their radial and vertical distributions. Because the gas structures are extended and each stellar scattering is relatively weak, the stellar orbits remain nearly circular and the net effect accumulates slowly over time. We calculate the radial profile of scattered stars with an idealized model and find that it approaches an equilibrium shape that is exponential, similar to the observed shapes of galaxy discs. Our models treat only scattering and have no bars or spiral arms, so the results apply mostly to dwarf irregular galaxies where there are no other obvious scattering processes. Stellar scattering by gaseous perturbations slows down when the stellar population gets thicker than the gas layer. An accreting galaxy with a growing thin gas layer can form multiple stellar exponential profiles from the inside-out, preserving the remnants of each Gyr interval in a sequence of ever-lengthening and thinning stellar subdiscs. The velocity dispersion of cold interstellar gas, σ, is one of the quantities that most radically affect the onset of gravitational instabilities in galaxy discs, and the quantity that is most drastically approximated in stability analyses. Here we analyse the stability of a large sample of nearby star-forming spirals treating molecular gas, atomic gas and stars as three distinct components, and using radial profiles of σCO and σHI derived from HERA CO-Line Extragalactic Survey (HERACLES) and The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey (THINGS) observations. We show that the radial variations of σCO and σHI have a weak effect on the local stability level of galaxy discs, which remains remarkably flat and well above unity, but is low enough to ensure (marginal) instability against non-axisymmetric perturbations and gas dissipation. More importantly, the radial variation of σCO has a strong impact on the size of the regions over which gravitational instabilities develop, and results in a characteristic instability scale that is one order of magnitude larger than the Toomre length of molecular gas. Disc instabilities are driven, in fact, by the self-gravity of stars at kiloparsec scales. This is true across the entire optical disc of every galaxy in the sample, with a few exceptions. In the linear phase of the discinstability process, stars and molecular gas are strongly coupled, and it is such a coupling that ultimately triggers local gravitational collapse/fragmentation in the molecular gas. Diffuse ionized gas (DIG) is prevalent in star-forming galaxies. Using a sample of 365 nearly face-on star-forming galaxies observed byMapping Nearby Galaxies at APO, we demonstrate how DIG in star-forming galaxies impacts the measurements of emission-line ratios, hence the interpretation of diagnostic diagrams and gas-phase metallicity measurements. At fixed metallicity, DIG-dominated low ΣHα regions display enhanced [S II]/Hα, [NII]/Hα, [OII]/Hβ and [O I]/Hα. The gradients in these line ratios are determined by metallicity gradients and ΣHα. In line ratio diagnostic diagrams, contamination by DIG moves HII regions towards composite or low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LI(N)ER)-like regions. A harder ionizing spectrum is needed to explain DIG line ratios. Leaky HII region models can only shift line ratios slightly relative toHII region models, and thus fail to explain the composite/LI(N)ER line ratios displayed by DIG. Our result favours ionization by evolved stars as a major ionization source forDIG with LI(N)ER-like emission. DIG can significantly bias themeasurement of gas metallicity and metallicity gradients derived using strong-line methods. Metallicities derived using N2O2 are optimal because they exhibit the smallest bias and error. Using O3N2, R23, N2 = [N II]/Hα and N2S2Hα to derive metallicities introduces bias in the derived metallicity gradients as large as the gradient itself. The strong-line method of Blanc et al. Cosmic rays (CRs) are an integral component of the interstellar medium, producing broadband emission while interacting with other Galactic matter components like the interstellar gas or magnetic fields. In addition to observations, numerical simulations of CR propagation through the Galaxy help to increase the level of understanding of Galactic CR transport and diffuse γ -ray emission as seen by different experiments. Up to now, the standard approach at modelling source distributions used as input for such transport simulations often rely on radial symmetry and analytical functions rather than individual, observation-based sources. We aim at a redefinition of existing CR source distributions by combining sources observed with the H.E.S.S. experiment and simulated random sources, which follow the matter density in the Milky Way. As a result, H.E.S.S.-inspired Galactic CR source distributions are inferred. We use the PICARD code to perform 3D-simulations of nuclei and electrons in CR propagation using our hybrid source distribution models. Furthermore, also gamma-ray maps and spectra, simulated with the redefined source models, are evaluated in different regions in the Galaxy and compared with each other to determine the statistical scatter of the underlying distributions. We find global consistency between our models and in comparison to previous simulations, with only some localised fluctuations, e.g. in the spiral arms. This implementation of a three-dimensional source model based on observations and simulations enables a new quality of propagation modelling. It offers possibilities for more realistic CR transport scenarios beyond radial symmetry and delivers meaningful results in both the arm and interarm regions of the Galaxy. Observations of plasma and turbulence in the outer heliosphere (the distant supersonic solar wind and the subsonic solar wind beyond the heliospheric termination shock) made by the Voyager Interstellar Mission and the energetic neutral atom observations made by the IBEX spacecraft have revealed that the underlying plasma in the outer heliosphere and very local interstellar medium (VLISM) comprises distinct thermal proton and electron and suprathermal pickup ion (PUI) populations. Estimates of the appropriate collisional frequencies show that the multi-component plasma is not collisionally equilibrated in either the outer heliosphere or VLISM. Furthermore, suprathermal PUIs in these regions form a thermodynamically dominant component. We review briefly a subset of the observations that led to the realization that the solar wind-VLISM interaction region is described by a non-equilibrated multi-component plasma and summarizes the derivation of suitable plasma models that describe a PUI-mediated plasma. We present spatially resolved properties of molecular gas and dust in a gravitationally lensed submillimeter galaxy H-ATLAS J090311.6+003906 (SDP.81) at z = 3.042 revealed by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We identified 14 molecular clumps in the CO(5-4) line data. The surface density of molecular gas (ΣH2) and star-formation rate (ΣSFR) of the clumps are more than three orders of magnitude higher than those found in local spiral galaxies. The clumps are placed in the "burst" sequence in the ΣH2-ΣSFR plane, suggesting that z~3 molecular clumps follow the star-formation law derived for local starburst galaxies. With our gravitational lens model, the positions in the source plane are derived for the molecular clumps, dust clumps, and stellar components identified in the Hubble Space Telescope image. The molecular and dust clumps are confined within a ~2 kpc region, while the spatial extent of the stellar components is as large as ~6 kpc and offset toward the west. The molecular clumps have a systematic velocity gradient in the north-south direction, which may indicate a rotating gas disk. One possible scenario is that the components of molecular gas, dust, and stars are distributed in a several-kpc-scale rotating disk, and the stellar emission is heavily obscured by dust in the central star-forming region. Alternatively, SDP.81 can be explained by a merging system, where dusty starbursts occur in the region where the two galaxies collide, surrounded by tidal features traced in the stellar components. Context. The spiral arm tangencies are ideal lines of sight in which to determine the distribution of interstellar gas components in the spiral arms and study the influence of spiral density waves on the interarm gas in the Milky Way. [C II] emission in the tangencies delineates the warm ionized component and the photon-dominated regions and is thus an important probe of spiral arm structure and dynamics. Aims. We aim to use [C II], H I, and 12CO spectral line maps of the Crux, Norma, and Perseus tangencies to analyze the internal structure of the spiral arms in different gas layers. Methods. We used [C II] l-V maps along with those for H I and 12CO to derive the average spectral line intensity profiles over the longitudinal range of each tangency. Using the VLSR of the emission features, we located the [C II], H I, and 12CO emissions along a cross cut of the spiral arm. We used the [C II] velocity profile to identify the compressed warm ionized medium (WIM) in the spiral arm. Results. We present a large-scale (~15°) position-velocity map of the Galactic plane in [C II] from to observed with Herschel HIFI. In the spectral line profiles at the tangencies, [C II] has two emission peaks, one associated with the compressed WIM and the other the molecular gas photon-dominated regions. When represented as a cut across the inner to outer edge of the spiral arm, the [C II]-WIM peak appears closest to the inner edge while 12CO and [C II] associated with molecular gas are at the outermost edge. H I has broader emission with an intermediate peak located nearer to that of 12CO. Conclusions. The velocity-resolved spectral line data of the spiral arm tangencies unravel the internal structure in the arms locating the emission lanes within them. We interpret the excess [C II] near the tangent velocities as shock compression of the WIM induced by the spiral density waves and as the innermost edge of spiral arms. For the Norma and Perseus arms, we estimate widths of ~250 pc in [C II]-WIM and ~400 pc in 12CO and overall spiral arm widths of ~500 pc in [C II] and 12CO emissions; in H I the widths are ~400 pc and ~620 pc for Perseus and Norma, respectively. The electron densities in the WIM are ~0.5 cm-3, about an order of magnitude higher than the average for the disk. The enhanced electron density in the WIM is a result of compression of the WIM by the spiral density wave potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rate at which interstellar gas is converted into stars, and its dependence on environment, is one of the pillars on which our understanding of the visible Universe is build. We present a comparison of the surface density of young stars (Σ*) and dust surface density (Σdust) across NGC 346 (N66) in 115 independent pixels of 6 x 6 pc². We find a correlation between Σ* and Σdust with a considerable scatter. A power-law fit to the data yields a steep relation with an exponent of 2.6 ± 0.2. We convert Σdust to gas surface density (Σgas) and Σ* to star formation rate (SFR) surface densities (ΣSFR), using simple assumptions for the gas-to-dust mass ratio and the duration of star formation. The derived total SFR (4 ± 1 x 10-3 M⊙ yr-1) is consistent with SFR estimated from the Ha emission integrated over the Ha nebula. On small scales the ΣSFR derived using Hα systematically underestimates the count-based ΣSFR, by up to a factor of 10. This is due to ionizing photons escaping the area, where the stars are counted. We find that individual 36 pc² pixels fall systematically above integrated disc galaxies in the Schmidt-Kennicutt diagram by on average a factor of ~7. The NGC 346 average SFR over a larger area (90 pc radius) lies closer to the relation but remains high by a factor of ~3. The fraction of the total mass (gas plus young stars) locked in young stars is systematically high (~ 10 per cent) within the central 15 pc and systematically lower outside (2 per cent), which we interpret as variations in star formation efficiency. The inner 15 pc is dominated by young stars belonging to a centrally condensed cluster, while the outer parts are dominated by a dispersed population. Therefore, the observed trend could reflect a change of star formation efficiency between clustered and non-clustered star formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The north-west photo-dissociation region (PDR) in the reflection nebula NGC7023 displays a complex structure. Filamentlike condensations at the edge of the cloud can be traced via the emission of the main cooling lines, offering a great opportunity to study the link between the morphology and energetics of these regions. Aims. We study the spatial variation of the far-infrared fine-structure lines of [CII] (158 μm) and [OI] (63 and 145 μm). These lines trace the local gas conditions across the PDR. We also compare their emission with molecular tracers including rotational and rovibrational lines of H2 and high-rotational lines of CO. Methods. We used observations from the Herschel/PACS instrument to map the spatial distribution of these fine-structure lines. The observed region covers a square area of about 110″ × 110″ with an angular resolution that varies from 4″ to 11″. We compared this emission with ground-based and Spitzer observations of H2 lines, Herschel/SPIRE observations of CO lines, and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6 μm images that trace the emission of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. We used a PDR code to model the [OI]145 μm line and infer the physical conditions in the region. Results. The [CII] (158 μm) and [OI] (63 and 145 μm) lines arise from the warm cloud surface where the PDR is located and the gas is warm, cooling the region. We find that although the relative contribution to the cooling budget over the observed region is dominated by [OI]63 μm (>30%), H2 contributes significantly in the PDR (~35%), as does [CII]158 μm outside the PDR (30%). Other species contribute little to the cooling ([OI]145 μm 9%, and CO 4%). Enhanced emission of these far-infrared atomic lines trace the presence of condensations, where high-excitation CO rotational lines and dust emission in the submillimetre are detected as well. The [OI] maps resolve these condensations into two structures and show that the peak of [OI] is slightly displaced from the molecular H2 emission. The size of these structures is about 8″ (0.015 pc) and in surface cover about 9% of the PDR emission. We have tested whether the density profile and peak densities that were derived in previous studies to model the dust and molecular emission can predict the [O i]145 μm emission. We find that the model with a peak density of 106 cm-3, and 2 × 104-5 cm-3 in the oxygen emitting region predicts an [OI]145 μm line that is only 30% lower than the observed emission. Finally, we did not detect emission from [NII]122 μm, suggesting that the cavity is mostly filled with non-ionised gas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Galaxy evolution depends strongly on the physics of the interstellar medium (ISM). Motivated by the need to incorporate the properties of the ISM in cosmological simulations, we construct a simple method to include the contribution of non-thermal components in the calculation of pressure of interstellar gas. In our method, we treat three non-thermal components – turbulence, magnetic fields and cosmic rays – and effectively parametrize their amplitude. We assume that the three components settle into a quasi-steady-state that is governed by the star formation rate, and calibrate their magnitude and density dependence by the observed radio–FIR correlation, relating synchrotron radiation to star formation rates of galaxies. We implement our model in single-cell numerical simulation of a parcel of gas with constant pressure boundary conditions and demonstrate its effect and potential. Then, the non-thermal pressure model is incorporated into ramses and hydrodynamic simulations of isolated galaxies with and without the non-thermal pressure model are presented and studied. Specifically, we demonstrate that the inclusion of realistic non-thermal pressure reduces the star formation rate by an order of magnitude and increases the gas depletion time by as much. We conclude that the non-thermal pressure can prolong the star formation epoch and achieve consistency with observations without invoking artificially strong stellar feedback. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. We study how diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) measured toward distance-distributed target stars can be used to locate dense interstellar (IS) clouds in the Galaxy and probe a line-of-sight (LOS) kinematical structure, a potentially useful tool when gaseous absorption lines are saturated or not available in the spectral range. Cool target stars are numerous enough for this purpose. Methods. We devised automated DIB-fitting methods appropriate for cool star spectra and multiple IS components. The data were fitted with a combination of a synthetic stellar spectrum, a synthetic telluric transmission, and empirical DIB profiles. The initial number of DIB components and their radial velocity were guided by HI 21 cm emission spectra, or, when available in the spectral range, IS neutral sodium absorption lines. For NaI, radial velocities of NaI lines and DIBs were maintained linked during a global simultaneous fit. In parallel, stellar distances and extinctions were estimated self-consistently by means of a 2D Bayesian method from spectroscopically-derived stellar parameters and photometric data. Results. We have analyzed Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) spectra of 225 stars that probe between ~2 and 10 kpc long LOS in five different regions of the Milky Way. The targets are the two CoRoT fields, two open clusters (NGC 4815 and λ Vel), and the Galactic bulge. Two OGLE fields toward the bulge observed before the GES are also included (205 target stars). Depending on the observed spectral intervals, we extracted one or more of the following DIBs: λλ 6283.8, 6613.6, and 8620.4. For each field, we compared the DIB strengths with the Bayesian distances and extinctions, and the DIB Doppler velocities with the HI emission spectra. Conclusions. For all fields, the DIB strength and the target extinction are well correlated. For targets that are widely distributed in distance, marked steps in DIBs and extinction radial distance profiles match each other and broadly correspond to the expected locations of spiral arms. For all fields, the DIB velocity structure agrees with HI emission spectra, and all detected DIBs correspond to strong NaI lines. This illustrates how DIBs can be used to locate the Galactic interstellar gas and to study its kinematics at the kpc scale, as illustrated by Local and Perseus Arm DIBs that differ by ≳~30 km s-1, in agreement with HI emission spectra. On the other hand, if most targets are located beyond the main absorber, DIBs can trace the differential reddening within the field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
