The present paper aims to analyze the intonational pattern of postal codes in Brazilian Portuguese spoken in the states of Alagoas, Bahia and Sergipe. Following the literature, we selected for the analysis f0 variation, boundary tone, and pitch reset (Ladd 2008, Swerts 1997, Oliveira Jr 2000). The speech samples were collected and compose project funded by CNPq. We found a recurring high boundary tone, marking the prosodic boundaries within the utterance and a low tone associated with the end of the utterance. We also found that there was a declination of f0 within the intonation unit and this was more significant as a global pattern. These results suggest that the utterance of postal codes in Brazilian Portuguese are integrated into an underlying structure of the language, and that through systematic use of specific intonational patterns, speakers of Brazilian Portuguese treat this numerical grouping as typical declarative sentences. PALABRAS CLAVE: entonación, prosodia, enseñanza de español, secuencia didáctica TEACHING OF INTONATION IN THE SFL CLASSROOM: A DIDACTIC SEQUENCE PROPOSAL Despite the theoretical and methodological contributions that have been developed in recent decades, intonation is still a pending subject in the SFL classroom. Some methods and approaches have dealt with intonation teaching. However, they may have not dwelled into the practical level deeply. This may be one of the reasons why intonation is barely present or taught in the classrooms. Apart from that, it is essential to know the current situation, some other aspects and weaknesses involved in this problem. This paper involves a didactic sequence sample that aims to encourage the teaching of intonation in the syllabus of any course and that is designed for practical application in the classroom. In order to do that, the failures of previous methodologies have been taken into account with the purpose of creating a model that tries to palliate these weaknesses as well as be adapted to the needs of the group of students we meet.

In this work, the intonation of broad focus statements and information-seeking yes-no questions of Catalan obtained using an induced corpus (ICD) is analyzed. The study is carried out within the framework of the AMPERCAT project (Contini et al., 2002; Fernández Planas, 2005). Data obtained with DCT are compared with those obtained through textual elicitation in AMPER and other prosodic studies of Catalan (Prieto et al., 2015). The majority nuclear contours for the broad focus statements is L*L%, while for the interrogatives there are different contours: two falling contours (H+L*L% and ¡H+L*L%) and two raising patterns (L*H% and H+L*LH%). Facial joints reflect on prosodic subcomponents of oral and sign languages. Therefore, it is a research of an applied, documentary, of a descriptive-exploratory character, through the observational method. The objective is to understand which are the facial movements of intonational prosodic manifestation in Brazilian Sign Language and what it means in a narrative context. As a methodological procedure, we opted for a bibliographic review about American Sign Language (ASL) and Sign Language Israeli and the analysis of a question of the High School National Exam (ENEM) of 2017 – the first edition of the test in Brazilian Sign Language. As results, were created a table about elements of superior facial movements and their means, furthermore verify a relevant contribution to research for the linguistic legitimization of Brazilian Sign Language, for the analyses about teaching and learning sing languages, for the signification, comprehension, and production parlance. Consequently, emphasize a new look and research about the linguistic of Brazilian Sign Languages, due to the scarceness of this publication studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This article is a pioneer approach to social variation in female prosody in Medellin, Colombia. A corpus of 324 structured speech phrases is studied, obtained from 6 female speakers of two different sociocultural strata, from the urban area of Medellin. The corpus has been phonetically analyzed using the values of the variations in hertz and semitones, and phonologically analyzed using the Sp_ToBI transcription system, in the theoretical-methodological framework of the Autosegmental Metric Model (AM). The qualitative analysis of the corpus and the results of the Wilcoxon test suggest that the nuclear accent and border tone, along with variables such as average, pitch range and maximum values, make possible to distinguish two sociocultural strata. Variables of minimum values, speaking rate and gradient are not significant to differentiate the sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tämä artikkeli käsittelee autismikirjon varhaisnuorten puheen prosodian havaittua epätyypillisyyttä. Kyseessä on pilottitutkimus, jonka aineisto koostuu viiden 11–13-vuotiaan suomea äidinkielenään puhuvan autismikirjon pojan ja kuuden samanikäisen neurotyypillisen pojan puhenäytteistä. Puhenäytteet on kerätty spontaanista puheesta. Aineiston pohjalta koostettiin havaintokoe, jonka suoritti 50 neurotyypillistä yliopisto-opiskelijaa. Tutkimuksen tulokset kasvattavat tietoisuutta prosodisista erityispiirteistä suomenkielisillä autismikirjon varhaisnuorilla., This study explores the perceived atypicality of the prosody of persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The data consist of speech samples produced by 11- to 13-year-old Finnish- speaking boys with ASD (n = 5), and by age- and gender-matched controls (n = 6). The speech samples have been collected from spontaneous speech. A perception test was administered to 50 neurotypical university students ( n = 50). The results show that neurotypical adults find the prosody of preadolescent boys with ASD more atypical than the prosody of age- and gender-matched controls. According to the acoustic analyses and the written answers of the raters, the perceptions of atypicality may be generated by sing-song-like or bouncing pitch, disconnected speech rhythm, large pitch excursions or flatness of pitch. The impression of atypicality is further emphasized if there are occurrences of morpho-syntactic problems (such as wrong case endings and disconnected syntactic structures), if some words are unintelligible and if articulation is lethargic, for example. A creaky voice, which was common in the speech samples, did not attract the attention of the raters. The speech of the informants with ASD was frequently thought to have been produced by a non-native speaker of Finnish, although all the informants were monolingual speakers of the language. The raters also found it difficu to understand what the informants with ASD were saying in the speech samples. The results of this study have clinical implications in terms of increasing awareness of prosodic deficiencie among Finnish-speaking preadolescents with ASD.

This paper presents the first "Prosodic Map of Chile", a long-term project aimed at documenting and describing (both phonetically and phonologically) the suprasegmental features of Chilean Spanish. In order to better appreciate the map's reach, a review of currently implemented similar prosodic maps is provided, including AMPER, ATLES and some others. This review considers what particular parameters are studied in each map, closely inspecting what are the foundations, directions and the overall reach of each one of them. The closing section provides a consideration of some freely available software tools designed to build maps, particularly OpenStreetMap, focusing on its potential for future international collaborative efforts. This work is a contribution to the Project Comparative Study of Intonation and Accent in borderlands of the Spanish Language (FFI2014-52716-P). In this paper we describe the melodic characteristics of a set of neutral declarative and absolute interrogative sentences, which have been extracted from a formal corpus uttered by women from rural areas of Cuba and Venezuela. While choosing the test sites, we have followed the proposed dialectal divisions by García Riverón (1988) and Mora (1996 y 1997). The analyses are performed using MatLab sub-routines (López-Bobo et al.). F0 absolute values are relativized into semitones, and their perceptive importance is determined above the 1.5 semitone differential threshold (Rietveld/Gussenhoven). These analyses have allowed us to carry out a phonetic-phonologic study that shows, among other results, differences in the interrogative modality that separate the rural areas from other urban areas that have been analysed in earlier studies (Dorta). Autismikirjon pojat vaikuttaisivat siis pystyvän käyttämään hyväkseen intonaatiota vuorovaikutuksellisena resurssina, vaikka vastavuoroinen vuorovaikutus on yleisesti ottaen autismikirjon henkilöille vaikeaa (APA, 2013)., Autism spectrum disorder is a neurobiological developmental disorder, characterized e.g. by problems of social interaction, over-sensitivity to sensory stimuli as well as restricted interests (APA, 2013). People a icted with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) o en have deviant prosodic features in their speech. is article focuses on the utterance- nal rising pitch and its use in questions and narrative turns in the spontaneous interaction of boys with ASD. e topic is important because even if autistic persons’ prosodic features have already been studied rather extensively, spontaneous interaction, which allows observing the use of intonation by persons with ASD, has to date been studied very little. e data originate from authentic group therapy sessions where 11–13-year-old boys a icted with ASD talk with their therapists. Methods of phonetics and conversation analysis are used in the study. e results of the study suggest that boys with ASD are able to use utterance- nal rising pitch as an interactional resource as well as to produce and interpret correctly prosodic features that indicate nality in spontaneous interaction. ey are also able to emphasize words with the help of prosodic features, call for other participants’ reactions and indicate that they take other participants into account with the help of utterance- nal pitch rises. us, boys with ASD seem to be able to use intonation as an interactional resource, even though reciprocal interaction is generally speaking di cult for people a icted with autism (APA, 2013).

This research paper presents initial findings regarding the analysis of rising intonation contours in final, broad focus declarative utterances recorded in Chiloé (Chile). These utterances-- unlike the great majority that have been reported in different varieties of Spanish and characterized by a falling nuclear configuration--exhibit a rising terminal pitch. The first acoustic data of conversational speech are analysed and preliminary phonological observations are made. Acoustic evidence of the rise is included, together with tentative phonological labelling and, finally, questions are raised and possibilities for further investigation are proposed. - Abstract
This work aims at describing differences between the dialectal varieties of Portuguese spoken at Salvador, Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in both the declarative and interrogative modalities. Analyses of prosodic parameters (fundamental frequency, duration, intensity) are made on the final nucleus of oxytonic, paroxytonic and proparoxytonic sentences. There are systematic prosodic changes between modalities - with a higher / rising F0 in interrogative nucleus where it is lower / decreasing for declaratives. The interrogative nucleus are also longer and stronger than the declaratives. Dialectal variations are also observed. The accentual patterns H + L*L% for declaratives and L + H*L% for interrogatives proposed by Moraes (2008) are observed in Rio de Janeiro speakers - the latter being truncated or compressed in oxytonic sentences due to lack of post-tonic material. Meanwhile, in the Salvador and Fortaleza varieties, interrogatives may also be performed with a L + H*H% pattern. More syllable elisions are also observed in Fortaleza speakers. The AMPER project (Atlas Multimédia Prosodique de l'Espace Roman) begun its journey in year 2002 with the aim of studying the prosody of the Romanic languages and varieties. Taking as a starting point the methodology agreed upon by AMPER, other projects dealing with specific languages and varieties have developed, including the Venezuelan variety within the Hispanic languages. In the current work we study the intonation of Aragua -located in the North-Central area of the country according to the dialectal division proposed by Mora- by using phonetic-phonological labelling of a formal or ad hoc SVO corpus designed in AMPER, and of more spontaneous sentences. From the results obtained, it is worth highlighting that the degree of spontaneity of the corpus does not substantially determine the nuclear pattern; however, a lesser degree of formality is associated to a larger index of variability. The present study deals with the phonetic description of sentence topics in Italian tourist guides’ speech. Topical progression, which ensures temporal, spatial, and referential continuity, is frequently expressed by sentence topics as well. The relevant literature generally supports the idea of a topic accent and a rising-falling (or “hat”) contour is described as the most frequent for the unmarked topic in Italian utterance structures, but other realizations are also possible. The hypothesis that we want to test in this work is whether this variability is due to specific factors. Hence, we investigate phonetic realization of sentence topics as a function of syntactic features -structure, function and weight- and textual-pragmatic features -discourse role considering ±aboutness, ±contrastiveness, ±givenness-. Specifically, tonal events, i.e., accents and boundaries, phonetic phrasing, and disfluency phenomena were investigated. Results show that both syntactic and pragmatic factors play a role in the phonetic realization of topics, though they act at different levels. In particular, disfluencies are found to be affected by syntactic weight and givenness, while tonal events seem to depend mainly on the discourse role., El presente estudio se plantea un análisis fonético de los tópicos oracionales en italiano, examinando habla de guías turísticos.

- Abstract
The objective of this research was to identify the prosodic differences that may exist in the language of eight groups of speakers from Caracas. Rhythm and intonation patterns of each group was analyzed. Recordings from PRESEEA corpus at Caracas (2014-2010) were used. Twenty-four speakers evenly distributed by sex, age, and educational level were studied. Ten utterances from each speaker were considered; syllable weight values and F0 from each syllable were analyzed using Praat software. The results show that, in terms of duration, the groups behave similarly, though in two of them the duration of syllable stress was statistically significant. Likewise, in all but one group, no significant difference was found in tone height of stressed and unstressed syllables, though unstressed syllables show a slight higher tone than stressed ones. Finally, low schooling men and young women included in the study showed identical rhythm and intonation patterns, a distinctive feature different from the rest of the groups, which showed partial similarities. Koodinvaihdolla tarkoitetaan kielen tai kielimuodon vaihtumista toiseksi samassa puhetilanteessa tai tekstissä. Koodinvaihtoja on tutkittu paljon, mutta niiden prosodisten piirteiden käsittely on jäänyt lähinnä maininnan tasolle. Tämä artikkeli tarkastelee lähemmin koodinvaihtojen prosodiaa. Tavoitteena on koodinvaihtoja sisältävää keskusteluaineistoa analysoimalla valottaa prosodian osuutta koodinvaihtojen merkitysten tulkinnassa. Tutkimuksen aineistona on puolen tunnin puhelinkeskustelu, jossa Suomessa syntynyt mutta pitkään Kanadassa asunut rouva keskustelee Suomessa asuvan siskonpoikansa kanssa. Aineistossa on yhteensä 73 koodinvaihtoesiintymää, joissa keskustelun kieli vaihtuu hetkellisesti suomesta englantiin. Code-switching occurs when a speaker alternates between two or more languages or language varieties in the same conversation or text. Code-switching as a phenomenon has been investigated fairly extensively, but prosodic features that characterise many of the switches have not gained much attention in previous studies. This article examines the prosody of code-switching instances in more detail. By analysing naturally-occurring conversational data, we will shed light on the role that prosody plays in the interpretation of code-switching instances. The data consist of a 30-minute-long telephone conversation. In the conversation, a lady who was born in Finland but who has lived in Canada for a long time talks with her nephew who lives in Finland. The data include 73 occurrences of code-switching in which the language of the conversation changes momentarily from Finnish to English. The method of our study is Conversation Analysis. The results of the study show that most often the instances of code-switching are produced with raised levels of pitch and intensity. The speakers use higher pitch and intensity typically when uttering loanwords or reported speech. As for loanwords, the prosodic marking invites the recipient to pay attention to the word that carries the rise in order to seek for the recipient’s recognition or reaction to words whose recognition might possibly be problematic. In the case of reported speech, in turn, prosodic features help to create “another voice”. In addition to the changes of pitch and intensity, the quality of voice can be marked in reported speech. In both these cases the prosodic marking carried by the code-switching invites the recipient to pay attention to the words or expressions in question. In addition to raised pitch and intensity, the data included also some occurrences where code-switchings were marked with lowered levels of pitch and intensity. In these cases code-switchings typically consist of expressions that structure the interaction rather than constitute important content words from the point of view of the ongoing narration. They are also more directed towards the speaker herself than towards the recipient. Thus, prosodic changes can be used to regulate the degree of recipiency and to indicate the relationship between the languages that are being used.

The aim of this work is to describe the effect of two pragmatic contexts, polite and impolite, in the tone of voice of speakers, using the same controlled dialogue. We will particularly look at the so-called broad focus phenomena, which are especially manifested in two acoustic measures: a) pitch range, that is, broader or narrower range of values of the F0 depending of the speech and b) the F0 register, that is, the higher or lower register employed by the speaker in the utterance. Both can vary according to contextual and pragmatic circumstances. We will also analyse the F0 rate of change or slope in the reactions, that is to say, how the transit from one intervention to another occurs through the negotiation of the F0 values in the dialogic interchanges. All these elements together, which we will contrast at the level of the utterance and at the level of the dialogue, will allow us to develop the idea of the creation and negotiation of the tonal domain, describing the effects that these two contexts (polite and impolite) and other pragmatic and dialogic conditions have on prosodic uses. Given the extensive body of research in audio description – the verbal-vocal description of visual or audiovisual content for visually impaired audiences – it is striking how little attention has been paid thus far to the spoken dimension of audio description and its para-linguistic, prosodic aspects. This article complements the previous research into how audio description speech is received by the partially sighted audiences by analyzing how it is performed vocally. We study the audio description of pictorial art, and one aspect of prosody is examined in detail: pitch, and the segmentation of information in relation to it. We analyze this relation in a corpus of audio described pictorial art in Finnish by combining phonetic measurements of the pitch with discourse analysis of the information segmentation. Previous studies have already shown that a sentence-initial high pitch acts as a discourse-structuring device in interpreting. Our study shows that the same applies to audio description. In addition, our study suggests that there is a relationship between the scale in the rise of pitch and the scale of the topical transition. That is, when the topical transition is clear, the rise of pitch level between the beginnings of two consecutive spoken sentences is large. Analogically, when the topical transition is small, the change of the sentence-initial pitch level is also rather small. Autismikirjon pojat vaikuttaisivat siis pystyvän käyttämään hyväkseen intonaatiota vuorovaikutuksellisena resurssina, vaikka vastavuoroinen vuorovaikutus on yleisesti ottaen autismikirjon henkilöille vaikeaa (APA, 2013). Autism spectrum disorder is a neurobiological developmental disorder, characterized e.g. by problems of social interaction, over-sensitity to sensory stimuli as well as restricted interests (APA, 2013). People afflicted with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have deviant prosodic features in their speech. This article focuses on the utterance-final rising pitch and its use in questions and narrative turns in the spontaneous interaction of boys with ASD. The topic is important because even if autistic persons’ prosodic features have already been studied rather extensively, spontaneous interaction, which allows observing the use of intonation by persons with ASD, has been studied very little before. The data originate from authentic group therapy sessions where 11–13-year-old boys afflicted with ASD talk with their therapists. Methods of phonetics and conversation analysis are used in the study. The results of the study suggest that boys with ASD are able to use utterance-final rising pitch as an interactional resource as well as to produce and interpret correctly prosodic features that indicate finality in spontaneous interaction. They are also able to emphasize words with the help of prosodic features, call for other participants’ reactions and indicate that they take other participants into account with the help of utterance-final pitch rises. Thus, boys with ASD seem to be able to use intonation as an interactional resource, even though reciprocal interaction is generally speaking difficult for people afflicted with autism (APA, 2013).

This research has been carried out within the framework of AMPER-Col (Multimedia Atlas of Prosody of the Romanic Space in Colombia). The main objective is to analyze the intonation contours of declaratives and interrogatives of female and male voices of two Colombian speakers belonging to the urban zone of Medellin. Results show us that there are differences between these voices in the maximum peak location, initial-PMx1 slope and the initial-final slope. These features have phonetic and phonological implications. However, those data should be taken with caution given that this is one of the first prosody studies in Colombia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research work aims to contribute towards the prosodic description of dialect varieties of Brazilian Portuguese. We present some differences and similarities that are found among neutral yes/non questions, corresponding to four dialect varieties of Santa Catarina State (Blumenau, Chapecó, Florianópolis, and Lages). The corpus used is the one of AMPERPOR Project, and it has 33 sentences neutral declaratives, and 33 neutral yes/non interrogatives, which are repeated three times by eight speakers. Although the F0 curves are roughly characterized through ascendant-descendent movements in the nuclear region, sentences ending by oxytone word tend to the centralized alignment, while the ones ending via paroxytone and proparoxytone present an alignment in more right-side. We verify that Blumenau and Florianópolis speakers present circumflex movements that are statistically less prominent than the ones presented by Chapecó and Lages speakers. This fact points out that there is lower variation of F0 in Blumenau and Florianópolis productions, as compared with the ones from Chapecó and Lages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lan honen helburu nagusia da Euskararen Atlas Prosodiko Interaktiboa (EAPI) ezagutaraztea. EAPI euskarazko prosodiaren lehen tresna multimedia eta interaktiboa da. Atlas honetan erabiltzen diren datu-baseak EDAK eta EAS dira, UPV/EHUko EUDIA ikerketa-taldeak sortutako corpusek osatutakoak. Atlasak prosodiari buruz egindako analisiak erakusten ditu: azentuaren kokapena euskararen aldaera eta silaba guztietan; oinarrizko esaldien intonazio eredu esanguratsuenak, euskara estandarrean eta euskalkietan; eta bat-bateko testuen eta testu irakurrien azterketa prosodikoa egiteko bidea irekitzen du. Atlas honekin, prosodiari dagokionean, euskara nazioarteko beste hizkuntza batzuen parean kokatzen da. The main objective of this work is to present the Interactive Atlas of Basque Prosody / Euskararen Atlas Prosodiko Interaktiboa (EAPI). EAPI is the first multimedia and interactive tool for prosody in Basque. This atlas has a database made up mainly of the EDAK and EAS corpora created by the EUDIA research group of the UPV/EHU. The atlas shows the analyses carried out on prosody: the location of the accent in all the varieties and syllables of Basque; the most significant intonation patterns of basic sentences, both in standard Basque and in dialects; and opens the way for the prosodic analysis of spontaneous and read texts. This paper analyzes Spanish intonation of the Jaén dialect, especially the relation between tonal peaks and stressed syllables, compared to the relation between tonal peaks and the word or syntagm boundaries. The results are also compared to those obtained by with identical corpus and criteria for the dialect of Granada by Pamies & Amorós (2005), and for the dialect of Almería by Pamies, Amorós & O'Neil (2006). The general tendencies detected in previous works are confirmed as for the demarcative function of tonal peaks in Spanish, at least in non-spontaneous speech

The aim of this paper is to analyse the boundary tones of Spanish pronominal interrogative sentences produced by early bilingual speakers of Basque and Spanish. Based on a corpus of 50 informants, 25 of them with Spanish as L1 and 25 with Basque as L1, distributed over all provinces of the peninsular Basque Country, where the Basque language is known and used at present, we analyse the tonal configurations of all melodic curves of the corpus within the autosegmental metrical model and compare these configurations with those obtained with the same informants for the Basque language. The present review is part of Ester Scarpa's speech, which deals with the role of prosody in language acquisition. The speaker conceives prosody as a privileged space for interface between linguistic levels; thus, prosodic facts are seen as linguistic resources in the language acquisition phase, stage of limited lexical-grammatical resources. Therefore, prosody is a space for the child's engagement in subjectivation, discourse and dialogue, and it is also a way of organizing linguistic forms. The speech contemplates three main topics: (i) the presentation of the first intonation systems of two children; (ii) the discussion about prosody and disfluencies; and (iii) the beginnings of intonational cohesion and narrativity. Two sets of data are presented: one referring to the use of prosody in initial narratives and the other referring to hesitation and disfluencies.

Abstract: Politeness plays a key role in cross-cultural communication and inter-cultural adaptation (Spencer-Oatey and Franklin 2009). Therefore, knowledge about (im)politeness and the acquisition of politeness stra-tegies is central in the integration of immigrants and the achievementof social cohesion. At the same time, prosody is already known todirectly affect politeness judgements in all studied languages, inclu-ding L1 Spanish (Hidalgo 2009; Devís 2011; Albelda 2012). However, the prosodic cues on which L1 speakers rely when judging politenessseem to be different for each language. While L1 Spanish speakersseem to rely more on intonation when judging politeness (Devís2011), L1 Chinese speakers tend to rely more on other prosodic cueswhen judging politeness in Chinese (Fan and Gu 2016). This studyinvestigates whether Chinese immigrants in Spain perceive the diffe-rence between polite requests and impolite commands the same wayL1 Spanish speakers do, when the only difference between the com-mands and requests is at the prosodic level. Chinese immigrants(N = 22) and L1 Spanish speakers (N = 26) listened to and judged thedegree of politeness of 20 pairs of commands and requests produced by4 L1 Spanish speakers (2 male + 2 female) from Madrid. Pairs of com-mands and requests had the same lexico-grammatical features and onlydiffered at the prosodic and pragmatic levels. Statistical analysis revea-led that while commands were perceived very similarly by Chineseimmigrants and L1 Spanish speakers, Chinese speakers had problemsperceiving the intention in polite requests, which were rated as morepolite by Spanish native speakers than by Chinese immigrants. ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this project, framed in the fields of intonation, dialectology and sociolinguistics, has been making a description of the intonation patterns of the western zone of Cantabria, specifically, those of an isolated rural population nucleus. In order to achieve this aim, a semi-spontaneous speech corpus was elaborated, consisting of 70 sentences produced by an informant from Carmona (Cantabria) following the methodology for the labeling of intonation patterns of Spanish Sp_ToBI, based on the Autosegmental-Metrical Model (AM). After systematically labeling and analyzing the sentences of the corpus, our results showed that both geographical and social factors contribute significantly to the characterization of Carmona's speech, as may be appreciated from the presence of differentiated intonation patterns with regard to those described for other areas and speech communities of Cantabria, specifically, in the systematic use of medium boundary tones and in the lengthening of the last syllable of the sentence. This research aims, on the one hand, to contribute to the dialectological and sociolinguistic studies on the Spanish of Cantabria —and, specifically, of its intonation patterns— and, on the other hand, to highlight the importance of a variable that has received scant attention in the studies on intonation change: the rural-urban factor. It is hoped that this modest contribution to this research field will enhance the interest of linguists to delve into the description of the intonation patterns of the Spanish of Cantabria, thus directing their attention to other dialectal and social varieties in order to complete the intricate map of the linguistic varieties of this region. Politeness plays a key role in cross-cultural communication and Íntercultural adaptation (Spencer-Oatey and Franklin 2009). Therefore, knowledge about (im)politeness and the acquisition of politeness strategies is central in the integration of immigrants and the achievement of social cohesion. At the same time, prosody is already known to directly affect politeness judgements in all studied languages, including Ll Spanish (Hidalgo 2009; Devís 2011; Albelda 2012). However, the prosodic cues on which L 1 speakers rely when judging politeness seem to be different for each language. While Ll Spanish speakers seem to rely more on intonation when judging politeness (Devís 2011), Ll Chinese speakers tend to rely more on other prosodic cues when judging politeness in Chinese (Fan and Gu 2016). This study investigates whether Chinese immigrants in Spain perceive the difference between polite requests and impolite commands the same way Ll Spanish speakers do, when the only difference between the commands and requests is at the prosodic level. Chinese immigrants (N = 22) and Ll Spanish speakers (N = 26) listened to and judged the degree of politeness of 20 pairs of commands and requests produced by 4 Ll Spanish speakers (2 male + 2 female) from Madrid. Pairs of commands and requests had the same lexico-grammatical features and only differed at the prosodic and pragmatic levels. Statistical analysis revealed that while commands were perceived very similarly by Chinese immigrants and Ll Spanish speakers, Chinese speakers had problems perceiving the intention in polite requests, which were rated as more polite by Spanish native speakers than by Chinese immigrants., La corteía tiene un papel fundamental en la comunicación y la adaptación intercultural (Spencer-Oatey y Franklin 2009). AMPER project (Multimedia Atlas of Romance Prosody), created in France in 2002, is an atlas of prosody of romance languages and linguistic regional varieties whose objective is to allow descriptive and comparative studies. Apart from Matlab-based acoustic analysis created exclusively for the project (López Bobo et al, 2007), perception analyses (perception test) of speech synthesis (.ton file formats) were carried out. Following AMPER guidelines and methodology, a study showing the results of a perception test applied to thirty-one Cuban workers was published in 2007 (Fernández Pérez-Terán et al, 2007). The test included synthesized stimuli of prosody from declarative and interrogative sentences uttered by Canarian and Cuban women. This study follows the same test but with a higher number of stimuli from sentences uttered by women from Tenerife and La Habana. The main difference with the 2007 study is that auditors were Canarian. The main objective was, then, to determine how similar these auditors perceived synthesized stimuli in relation to Cuban auditors. Results show proximity in perception between Tenerife (Canary Islands) and La Habana (Cuba), being both of them Atlantic varieties of Spanish language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the analysis of the speech by a member of parliament well known for his qualities as an orator in the first turn in a debate on labour reform, this paper analyses the survival of classical rhetoric in present-day political communication. The following aspects are taken into account: the bases of the argumentation structure, a wide concept of discursive context, and the strategies modelling the process of oralisation undergone by texts previously written. As for the execution (actio, according to the classics), verbal and paraverbal oral aspects are studied, such as voice quality, accent, intonation and delimitating procedures, as well as kinetic non-verbal aspects, such as face expression and the function of gesture. This work aims at presenting some theoretical and methodological aspects of prosody research to newcomers. The work gives the Platonic origin of the word "prosody" from which the contemporary meanings developed, to include notions such as prominence, prosodic boundary, phrase stress, stress group, focus, emphasis, intonation and rhythm. Selected methodological aspects are shown, such as the construction of corpus, the relationship between lab and spontaneous speech, syllabic duration normalization, and the difference between the notions attached to prosody production and perception. From these aspects some crucial issues in speech prosody are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
