Purpose: To assess the test–retest and inter-rater reliability of goniometry and fleximetry in measuring cervical range of motion in individuals with chronic neck pain. Methods: A reliability study. Thirty individuals with chronic neck pain were selected. Cervical range of motion was measured by goniometry and fleximetry at two time points 7 days apart. To characterize the sample, we used the numerical pain rating scale, Pain-Related Catastrophizing Thoughts Scale, and Neck Disability Index. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable change (MDC) were calculated. Correlations between goniometry and fleximetry measurements were performed using Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho). Results: For goniometry, we found excellent test–retest reliability (ICC ≥ 0.986, SEM ≤ 1.89%, MDC ≤ 5.23%) and inter-rater reliability (ICC ≥ 0.947, SEM ≤ 3.91%, MDC ≤ 10.84%). Similarly, we found excellent test–retest reliability (ICC ≥ 0.969, SEM ≤ 2.71%, MDC ≤ 7.52%) and inter-rater reliability (ICC ≥ 0.981, SEM ≤ 1.88%, MDC ≤ 5.20%) for fleximetry. Finally, we observed a strong correlation between the goniometry and the fleximetry for all cervical movements (rho ≥ 0.993). Purpose: To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Spine Functional Index (SFI) into Brazilian Portuguese (SFI-Br) in individuals with musculoskeletal spine disorders. Methods: Participants (n=194) answered the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire for General Pain (RMDQ-g), and SFI-25 incorporating the SFI-10. Structural validity, from confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), used comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), and chi-square/degrees of freedom (DF). The best structure was considered from the lower values of the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). Construct and criterion validity used Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho). Internal consistency used Cronbach's alpha, reliability used intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC2,1), with ceiling and floor effects determined. Error used the standard error of the measurement (SEM) and minimal detectable change, 90% level (MDC90). Results: Adequate fit indices demonstrated an unequivocal one-factor structure only for the SFI-10 (chi-square/DF <3.00, CFI and TLI >0.90, RMSEA <0.08). The SFI-10-Br correlation was high with the SFI-Br (rho=0.914, p<0.001), moderate for the RMDQ-g (rho=-0.78), SF-36 functional capacity domain (rho=0.718) and NPRS (rho=-0.526); and adequate for the remaining SF-36 domains (rho>0.30). Test-retest reliability (ICC2,1=0.826) and internal consistency (alpha=0.864) were high. No ceiling or floor effects were observed, and error was satisfactory (SEM=9.08%, MDC90=25.15%). Conclusion: The SFI Brazilian version was successfully produced with the 10-item version showing an unequivocal one-factor structure, high construct and criterion validity, reliability, internal consistency, and satisfactory error. Objective: To create, develop, and validate the Fear of Return to Sport Scale (FRESS) for injured professional or recreational athletes in rehabilitation. Methods: This is a questionnaire validation study. To determine the structural and construct validity, 192 injured professional or recreational athletes of different sports modalities were included. We used a subsample with 32 participants to analyze test–retest reliability and internal consistency. Main outcome measures were the FRESS, Numerical Pain Scale (NPS), Pain-Related Catastrophizing Thoughts Scale (PCTS), Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain Questionnaire for athletes (SEFIP-sport), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results: Initially, 25 questions were proposed by the specialists. Of these, 4 questions were excluded due to similarity with others. After applying the content validity coefficient, 8 questions were excluded for presenting a value lower than 0.80, leaving 13 items. The exploratory factor analysis identified the one-dimensional structure of the FRESS with 13 items. However, five items were excluded for presenting high covariance with the error of several other FRESS items in the confirmatory factor analysis. Thus, the final version of the FRESS was defined with one domain and eight items. Regarding the construct validity, we observed a magnitude of correlation varying between 0.257 and 0.470 between the FRESS and the instruments used here. We observed adequate test–retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.896) and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.868). Ceiling and floor effects were not observed. Conclusion: The FRESS with one domain and eight items has acceptable measurement properties and its use in clinical and sports environments to measure the fear of returning to sport in injured professional or recreational athletes is supported. Background: Assessment instruments play an essential role in the management of knee osteoarthritis. This study aimed to verify the clinimetric properties and validate the short version of WOMAC's (SV-WOMAC) knee with two domains, pain (four items) and physical function (eight items) in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KO). Methods: Reliability and internal consistency Construct, criterion validity, Ceiling, and floor effects analyses were performed. In addition to the SV-WOMAC, the following instruments were used: the numerical rating scale (NRPS), International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), and WOMAC's original version. Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho) was used to determine the magnitude of the correlation between the AFAQ and the other instruments. Moreover, the test–retest reliability and internal consistency were assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach's alpha, respectively. In addition, standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable change (MDC) were calculated. Results: One hundred and thirteen subjects with KO were included for validity analysis, and a subsample of 53 subjects was used for test-retest reliability. Adequate reliability and internal consistency were observed with ICC ≥ 0.76, SEM ≤ 1.85, MDC ≥ 5.1, and Cronbach's alpha ≥ 0.84. Regarding construct validity, correlations greater than 0.50 were observed with the IKDC, NRPS, and functional domains of the SF-36. The SV-WOMAC showed a correlation > 0.70 with the original version and did not show ceiling and floor effects. Background: The purpose of this study was to translate, cross-culturally adapt and validate the Gillette Functional Assessment Questionnaire (FAQ) into Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation was carried out in accordance with international recommendations. The FAQ was applied to a sample of 102 patients diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP). Construct validity was assessed using Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho), and the FAQ score was correlated with the Functional Mobility Scale (FMS) and Gross Motor Function Classification Scale (GMFCS). A subsample of 50 patients was used to assess reliability using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable difference (MDD). Ceiling and floor effects were also evaluated. Results: The Brazilian version of the FAQ showed excellent test-retest reliability by the assessment of the physiotherapist (ICC = 0.99) and respondent (ICC = 0.97), as well as excellent inter-examiner reliability (ICC = 0.94). The SEM was 0.23 (physiotherapist), 0.47 (respondent) and 0.64 (inter-examiner), while the MDD was 0.64 (physiotherapist), 1.29 (respondent) and 1.76 (inter-examiner). The classification of gross motor function showed a high correlation with the FAQ applied by the physiotherapist (rho = -0.89) and by the respondent (rho = -0.87). The FMS-5 m was highly correlated with the FAQ applied by the physiotherapist and the respondent (rho = 0.88 and rho = 0.87, respectively). The FMS-50 and FMS-500 presented very high correlation with the FAQ applied by the physiotherapist (rho = 0.91 for both) and high correlation with the FAQ applied by the respondent (rho = 0.89 and rho = 0.88, respectively). The Brazilian version of the FAQ did not present the ceiling and floor effects. Conclusion: The FAQ presented adequate psychometric properties in patients with CP, indicating that it is possible to use it as a measure of functional gait mobility in Brazil. Background: Our objective was to verify the reliability, internal consistency and construct validity of the Barthel Index in Brazilian cancer patients in palliative care. Methods: We included patients with cancer, both sexes, and age greater than or equal to 18 years. We used to evaluate patients the Barthel Index, Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS), and European Organization for Research in the Treatment of Cancer Questionnaire-core 15 (EORTC-QLQ-C15-PAL). The measurement properties evaluated in this study were test–retest and inter-rater reliability and construct validity (tested by means of correlations with other instruments). Results: We included 220 patients for construct validity and a subsample of 27 patients for reliability analyses. We observed adequate reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient ≥ 0.962) and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.942). There were adequate correlations between the Barthel Index and the KPS (rho = 0.766), and the functional capacity domain of the EORTC-QLQ-C15-PAL (rho = -0.698). Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the Barthel Index presents adequate test–retest and inter-rater reliability, acceptable internal consistency, and valid construct for measuring functional independence in cancer patients. Objective: To translate, cross-culturally adapt and assess measurement properties of the translated version of the Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese. Design: Cross-sectional study. Settings: University healthcare facility and online. Participants: People with chronic neck pain (n = 178). Interventions: Not applicable. Main outcome measures: Participants answered the translated version of Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire, the Neck Disability Index, the Numerical Rating Scale for pain, the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale. Seven to ten days after that, a subset of 84 participants answered the Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire again. The structural (exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses) and construct validities, internal consistency, reliability and concordance were assessed. Level of significance was set at 5%. Results: Participants' (35.6 ± 13.5 years old) with symptoms duration of 54.4 ± 60.4 months scored 25.5 ± 14.0 on the Brazilian Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire and 11.9 ± 5.8 on the Neck Disability Index. The structural analysis showed that the short version of the Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire has an adequate structure to measure disability due to neck pain. Correlations with other questionnaires were between 0.268 and 0.678, Cronbach's alfa was 0.76, intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.96, standard error of measurement was 2.74 and minimal detectable change was 7.60. Conclusion: The short version of the Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire is valid and reliable to be used in patients with chronic neck pain, as it presented adequate measurement properties of structural and construct validity, reliability and concordance. Objective: To validate and evaluate the intra- and inter-rater reliability of the 2-min step test (2MST) in measuring the functional performance of patients with knee pain associated with osteoarthritis (OA).Methods: Forty-one patients with knee OA was included. Two examiners assessed the patients at two times with interval between the test and retest from 7 to 14 days. All executions of 2MST were recorded in real time by the examiners and were also recorded by video. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and 95% confidence interval (CI), standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable difference (MDD) were used to determine reliability. In the construct validity, we correlate the score of the 2MST with the other instruments used in the study: The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Numerical Pain Scale (NPS), Pain-Related Catastrophizing Thoughts Scale (PCTS) and Chronic Pain Self-Efficacy Scale (PSEQ). The agreement between the face-to-face assessment and the evaluation based on the video record was assessed using the Bland-Altman methodology in the 4 moments of the 2MST.Results: 2MST presented excellent intra- (ICC = 0.94, SEM = 4.47, MDD = 12.40) and inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.97, SEM = 3.07, MDD = 8.52). The agreement was acceptable between face-to-face assessments and the analyzes performed on video. All instruments showed a statistically significant correlation with 2MST, except the PCTS. A correlation magnitude above 0.50 was found between the 2MST and pain and function domains of the WOMAC, and a correlation magnitude between 0.30 and 0.50 with the joint stiffness domain of the WOMAC, NRPS and PSEQ.Conclusion: 2MST proved to be valid for assessing functional capacity in patients with knee OA, with excellent reliability. Background: The Work Role Functioning Questionnaire 2.0 (WRFQ 2.0) is an instrument that measures the difficulties perceived by workers in meeting work demands, given their physical or emotional health, but it has not yet been adapted for Brazil. Thus, this study aimed to translate, cross-culturally adapt and assess the psychometric properties of the WRFQ 2.0 into Brazilian Portuguese.Methods: This is an observational study. Initially, translation and cross-cultural adaptation into Brazilian Portuguese was carried out. After that, this version was submitted to an evaluation of its internal structure. The internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed. To determine the construct validity, Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho) was used to determine the magnitude of correlation between the WRFQ 2.0 and the Work Ability Index (WAI), Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and Self -Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain (SEFIP-work).Results: The internal structure with five domains and 27 items presented adequate fit indices for the Brazilian version of the WRFQ 2.0. Adequate correlations of the five domains of the WRFQ 2.0 with the NPRS, WAI and SEFIP-work were found (rho ranged between 0.145 and 0.338). The test-retest reliability of the WRFQ 2.0 ranged from substantial to excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient ≥ 0.785) and internal consistency was adequate (Cronbach's alpha ≥ 0.852).Conclusion: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the WRFQ 2.0 presents valid internal structure with five domains and 27 items, adequate construct based on correlations with other instruments, and acceptable test-retest reliability and internal consistency. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intrarater and interrater reliability of the Leg Lateral Reach Test (LLRT) to measure the mobility of the thoraco-lumbo-pelvic segment in individuals with nonspecific chronic low back and the correlations among pain intensity, kinesiophobia, and LLRT scores. Thirty participants with nonspecific chronic low back pain were selected. The main variables were LLRT, pain intensity (measured with the Numeric Pain Rating Scale) and kinesiophobia (Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia). The reliability of the LLRT was evaluated by means of intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), minimum detectable change. Most participants were women (83.3%), young adults (mean = 30.86; standard deviation = 8.56), with overweight and nonspecific chronic low back for more than 59 months of duration. In the intrarater analysis, we observed reliability values ranging from substantial to excellent (ICC ≥.889; SEM ≤ 7.97%). In the interrater analysis, we observed excellent reliability (ICC ≥.947; SEM ≤ 5.62%). There was a weak and positive correlation between pain and LLRT, and no correlation between kinesiophobia and LLRT. Background: Our objective was to perform the translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of the Quality Care Questionnaire-Palliative Care (QCQ-PC) into Brazilian Portuguese for cancer patients in palliative care. The translation and cross-cultural adaptation comprised the following stages: translation, synthesis of translations, back-translation, analysis by a committee of experts, testing of the pre-final version, and definition of the final version. The evaluated measurement properties were: structural validity using factor analysis, test–retest reliability using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha, and construct validity using the correlations between the QCQ-PC and other questionnaires already validated in Brazil. Results: Two hundred and twenty-five cancer patients were included for validity analyses, and a subsample of 30 patients was used for test–retest reliability. The most adequate fit indexes were for the short version of the QCQ-PC (SF-QCQ-PC), with two domains and 12 items. There was adequate reliability and internal consistency, with values of the ICC ≥ 0.83 and Cronbach's alpha ≥0.82. There were correlations > 0.30 between the SF-QCQ-PC and the Karnofsky Performance Scale, the Palliative Prognostic Index, the sadness domain of the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System, the Barthel Index, and all domains related to the McGill Quality of Life Questionnaire and the European Organization for Research in the Treatment of Cancer Questionnaire-core. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intrarater and interrater reliability of the 2-minute step test (2MST) in active and sedentary lean adults and to identify the test cutoff point to differentiate active from sedentary individuals. This observational study involved 4 mixed-sex groups (each with 50 lean participants): group 1, sedentary and aged 18 to 24 years; group 2, active and aged 18 to 24 years; group 3, sedentary and aged 25 to 44 years; and group 4, active and aged 25 to 44 years. The 2MST was administered independently by 2 examiners (with 3 months' training) at 2 different times, with a 7-day interval. Habitual physical activity was evaluated by means of the Baecke Questionnaire (BQ). In statistical analysis, the Pearson correlation coefficient was used to verify the correlation between the 2MST and BQ; intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC 2,3) were used to determine the intrarater and interrater reliability of the 2MST; and the receiver operating characteristic curve was used to identify the accuracy of the 2MST. Excellent intrarater and interrater reliability were found for all 4 groups (intraclass correlation coefficients ≥ 0.83). Correlating the 2MST score with the BQ score, a significant, positive, weak correlation was observed (r = 0.344, P <.001). For differentiating active from sedentary individuals, the 2MST showed low accuracy (area under the curve = 0.671), with 61% sensitivity and 67% specificity. This study showed that the 2MST is a reliable test with a low amount of inherent error. BACKGROUND: Skin impedance is a biological signal that has been employed in the measurement of pain. However, there are few scientific data on skin impedance, with a great variety of assessment methods and controversial results. OBJECTIVE: To examine the intra- and inter-rater reliability of skin impedance measurement in individuals with chronic neck pain. METHODS: This is a blind cross-sectional study. Thirty individuals of both genders, aged between 18 and 45 years and with chronic neck pain were included in the study. Two examiners assessed skin impedance of the upper and lower limbs and torso at two intervals separated by one week. For statistical analysis, we used the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC 2, 3 ) to determine the intra- and inter-rater reliability of skin impedance, with its respective confidence interval of 95%, standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable change (MDC). RESULTS: The intra-rater reliability was considered substantial to excellent, with ICC values ranging between 0.843 and 0.978, SEM between 0.58 and 15.26 Ω, and MDC between 1.61 and 42.31 Ω. The inter-rater reliability was moderate to excellent, with ICC values ranging between 0.761 and 0.997, SEM ranging between 0.22 and 16.72 Ω, and MDC ranging between 0.63 and 46.35 Ω. CONCLUSION: The measurement of skin impedance of the upper and lower limbs and torso in individuals with chronic neck pain has acceptable reliability values when considered at different times and by different examiners. Objective Although it is possible to find studies that analyze the velocity of blood flow in different arteries, the reliability of Doppler ultrasound on peripheral arteries has not yet been completely established. Our objective was to evaluate intra- and inter-rater reliability of the measurement of blood flow velocity by Doppler ultrasound of brachial, radial, popliteal, and posterior tibial arteries. Methods Fifty healthy individuals of both genders, aged between 18 and 45 years, were included in the study. For the evaluation of arterial blood flow velocity, a portable Doppler ultrasound device was used to measure the mean and maximum blood flow velocity of posterior tibial, popliteal, brachial, and radial arteries. Two examiners performed assessments of the same volunteers independently and twice, with an interval of 1 week between them. Results We found good to very good reliability for measuring the mean and maximum blood flow velocity of the arteries evaluated. The intraclass correlation coefficients ranged between 0.501 and 0.866, standard error of measurement ranged between 0.81 and 9.45 cm/s, and minimum detectable change ranged between 2.25 and 26.13 cm/s. Conclusion The assessment of mean and maximum blood flow velocity of the brachial, radial, popliteal, and posterior tibial arteries by means of Doppler ultrasound presents acceptable reliability values, which supports the use of this evaluation method in research and clinical practice. Heart rate variability (HRV) among other methods can be used to assess diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy by cardiac intervals were recorded. However, the amount of error depending on this measurement methodology is unclear. To evaluate the intra- and inter-rater reliability to calculate HRV indices, comparing different times and by different trained examiners in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Thirty individuals of both genders, aged between 18 and 45 years, with T2DM. The RR interval (RRi) were recorded during a 10 min period on supine position using a portable heart rate monitor (Polar® S810i model). HRV indices were calculated by the software Kubios® HRV analysis (version 2.2). Linear (Mean RRi; STD RR; Mean HR; rMSSD; RR Tri; TINN LF; HF; total power) and non-linear (SD1; SD2; DFα1; DFα2, ApEn and, SampEn) indices were calculated by two examiners with an interval of one week between them. Substantial to excellent was found for reliability of the intra-examiner, with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) values ranging from 0.79 to 0.99, standard error of measurement (SEM) between 0.02 and 123.49 (in percentage: 1.83 and 16.67), and minimum detectable change (MDC) between 0.07 and 342.30. Regarding the inter-examiner reliability, substantial to excellent reliability was found, with ICC values ranging from 0.73 to 0.97, SEM between 0.04 and 178.13 (in percentage: 3.26 and 24.18), and MDC between 0.11 and 493.77. The use of the portable heart rate monitor to measure HRV showed acceptable intra and inter reliability in individuals with T2DM, supporting the use of this method of evaluation in research and clinical practice.
