Whether intraplate earthquakes have different average source properties, compared to interplate events, has been long debated. It has been proposed that intraplate events tend to rupture smaller areas with higher stress drops, compared to the average interplate earthquake. Here we estimate the rupture lengths of several Brazilian earthquakes by accurately locating their immediate aftershocks. The sparsity of stations in low-seismicity regions, such as Brazil, hinders accurate epicentral determination. We use cross-correlation of P , S and Lg waves to accurately locate the aftershocks relative to a reference event. In several cases, it was possible to infer the rupture length by the distribution of the early aftershocks; with the later aftershocks tending to span a larger area. We studied six different aftershock sequences using regional stations up to several hundred km distance. The mainshock occurs close to the foreshocks, which act as triggers to the main rupture. The immediate aftershocks tend to occur in a circle around a central (presumably stress-free) zone, which we interpret as the rupture of the mainshock. Published data from other events, based mainly on local networks, were added to provide an empirical relationship between rupture length and magnitude. These data suggest that stress-drops in Brazil vary mostly between 0.1 and 10 MPa, a similar range to many other studies worldwide. However, the mean stress drop (about 1 MPa) is smaller than the mean values of both interplate and intraplate events globally (mostly between 2 and 10 MPa). A possible dependence of stress drops with hypocentral depth may explain this difference: Brazilian intraplate earthquakes tend to be shallower than most other mid plate regions giving rise to smaller stress drops, on average. This result has important implications for seismic hazard estimation when GMPE equations from other intraplate regions are used in Brazil.

Copyright © The Author(s) 2018. The September 2017 Chiapas (Mexico) normal-faulting intraplate earthquake (Mw 8.1) occurred within the Tehuantepec seismic gap offshore Mexico. We constrained the finite-fault slip model of this great earthquake using teleseismic and tsunami observations. First, teleseismic body-wave inversions were conducted for both steep (NP-1) and low-angle (NP-2) nodal planes for rupture velocities (Vr) of 1.5–4.0 km/s. Teleseismic inversion guided us to NP-1 as the actual fault plane, but was not conclusive about the best Vr. Tsunami simulations also confirmed that NP-1 is favored over NP-2 and guided the Vr = 2.5 km/s as the best source model. Our model has a maximum and average slips of 13.1 and 3.7 m, respectively, over a 130 km × 80 km fault plane. Coulomb stress transfer analysis revealed that the probability for the occurrence of a future large thrust interplate earthquake at offshore of the Tehuantepec seismic gap had been increased following the 2017 Chiapas normal-faulting intraplate earthquake.

Recent megathrust events in Tohoku (Japan), Maule (Chile), and Sumatra (Indonesia) were well recorded. Much has been learned about the dominant physical processes in megathrust zones: (partial) locking of the plate interface, detailed coseismic slip, relocking, afterslip, viscoelastic mantle relaxation, and interseismic loading. These and older observations show complex spatial and temporal patterns in crustal deformation and displacement, and significant differences among different margins. A key question is whether these differences reflect variations in the underlying processes, like differences in locking, or the margin geometry, or whether they are a consequence of the stage in the earthquake cycle of the margin. Quantitative models can connect these plate boundary processes to surficial and far-field observations. We use relatively simple, cyclic geodynamic models to isolate the first-order geodetic signature of the megathrust cycle. Coseismic and subsequent slip on the subduction interface is dynamically (and consistently) driven. A review of global preseismic, coseismic, and postseismic geodetic observations, and of their fit to the model predictions, indicates that similar physical processes are active at different margins. Most of the observed variability between the individual margins appears to be controlled by their different stages in the earthquake cycle. The modeling results also provide a possible explanation for observations of tensile faulting aftershocks and tensile cracking of the overriding plate, which are puzzling in the context of convergence/compression. From the inversion of our synthetic GNSS velocities we find that geodetic observations may incorrectly suggest weak locking of some margins, for example, the west Aleutian margin.

Source parameters of the Bay of Bengal earthquake of 21 May 2014 have been studied using full waveform inversion. Its source mechanism thus determined the orientation of the strike slip faulting as NW-SE/NE-SW. The occurrence of past earthquakes along the NE-SW nodal plane suggested its preference as the main fault which could result from the transmission of stresses from the Indian plate boundary. High stress drop of this earthquake (216 bar) is attributed to its location in the intraplate region, strike slip faulting and focus in the colder upper mantle. Comparison of the stress drop of deeper focus Hindukush earthquakes with that of the Bay of Bengal earthquake showed a smaller felt radius due to fractured lithosphere in the Himalayas vis-a-vis more efficient propagation of seismic waves in the peninsular region from the source region of this recent earthquake. The seismological evidence presented for the 85°E and 90°E ridges shows the predominance of strike slip faulting with thrusting on both the ridges. Integrating their source mechanism with that of the May 2014 earthquake, it could be inferred that the Bay of Bengal region (excluding Andaman Sumatra subduction zone) is characterised predominantly by strike slip faulting in the region north of latitude 20°N and strike slip with thrusting in the remaining portion.

Subduction is substantially multi-scale process where the stresses are built by long-term tectonic motions, modified by sudden jerky deformations during earthquakes, and then restored by following multiple relaxation processes. Here, we develop a cross-scale thermomechanical model aimed to simulate the subduction process from 1 minute to million years' time scale. The model employs elasticity, nonlinear transient viscous rheology, and rate-and-state friction. It generates spontaneous earthquake sequences and by using an adaptive time-step algorithm, recreates the deformation process as observed naturally during the seismic cycle and multiple seismic cycles. The model predicts that viscosity in the mantle wedge drops by more than three orders of magnitude during the great earthquake with a magnitude above 9. As a result, the surface velocities just an hour or day after the earthquake are controlled by viscoelastic relaxation in the several hundred km of mantle landward of the trench and not by the afterslip localized at the fault as is currently believed. Our model replicates centuries-long seismic cycles exhibited by the greatest earthquakes and is consistent with the postseismic surface displacements recorded after the Great Tohoku Earthquake. We demonstrate that there is no contradiction between extremely low mechanical coupling at the subduction megathrust in South Chile inferred from long-term geodynamic models and appearance of the largest earthquakes, like the Great Chile 1960 Earthquake.

The relationship between individual earthquakes and the longer-term growth of topography and of geological structures is not fully understood, but is key to our ability to make use of topographic and geological datasets in the contexts of seismic hazard and wider-scale tectonics. Here we investigate those relationships at an active fold-and-thrust belt in the southwest Tarim Basin, Central Asia. We use seismic waveforms and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) to determine the fault parameters and slip distribution of the 2015 Mw 6.3 Pishan earthquake - a blind, reverse-faulting event dipping towards the Tibetan Plateau. Our earthquake mechanism and location correspond closely to a fault mapped independently by seismic reflection, indicating that the earthquake was on a pre-existing ramp fault over a depth range of ˜9–13 km. However, the geometry of folding in the overlying fluvial terraces cannot be fully explained by repeated coseismic slip in events such as the 2015 earthquake nor by the early postseismic motion shown in our interferograms; a key role in growth of the topography must be played by other mechanisms. The earthquake occurred at the Tarim-Tibet boundary, with the unusually low dip of 21° . We use our source models from Pishan and a 2012 event to argue that the Tarim Basin crust deforms only by brittle failure on faults whose effective coefficient of friction is ≤0.05±0.025. In contrast, most of the Tibetan crust undergoes ductile deformation, with a viscosity of order 10²⁰–10²² Pa s. This contrast in rheologies provides an explanation for the low dip of the earthquake fault plane.

We used recent seismic data and advanced techniques to investigate 3D fault geometry over the transition from the partially coupled to the fully coupled plate interface inboard of the Nankai Trough off the Kii Peninsula, Japan. We found that a gently dipping plate boundary decollement with a thick underthrust layer extends beneath the entire Kumano forearc basin. The 1 April 2016 Off-Mie earthquake (Mw6.0) and its aftershocks occurred, where the plate boundary decollement steps down close to the oceanic crust surface. This location also lies beneath the trenchward edge of an older accretionary prism (∼14 Ma) developed along the coast of the Kii peninsula. The strike of the 2016 rupture plane was similar to that of a formerly active splay fault system in the accretionary prism. Thus, the fault planes of the 2016 earthquake and its aftershocks were influenced by the geometry of the plate interface as well as splay faulting. The 2016 earthquake occurred within the rupture area of large interplate earthquakes such as the 1944 Tonankai earthquake (Mw8.1), although the 2016 rupture area was much smaller than that of the 1944 event. Whereas the hypocenter of the 2016 earthquake was around the underplating sequence beneath the younger accretionary prism (∼6 Ma), the 1944 great earthquake hypocenter was close to oceanic crust surface beneath the older accretionary prism. The variation of fault geometry and lithology may influence the degree of coupling along the plate interface, and such coupling variation could hinder slip propagation toward the deeper plate interface in the 2016 event.

We use finite element modeling to investigate on the stress loading-unloading cycles and earthquakes occurrence in the plate interiors, resulting from the interactions of tectonic plates along their boundary. We model a visco-elasto-plastic plate embedding a single or multiple faults, while the tectonic stress is applied along the plate boundary by an external loading visco-elastic plate, reproducing the tectonic setting of two interacting lithospheres. Because the two plates deform viscously, the timescale of stress accumulation and release on the faults is self-consistently determined, from the boundary to the interiors, and seismic recurrence is an emerging feature. This approach overcomes the constraints on recurrence period imposed by stress (stress-drop) and velocity boundary conditions, while here it is unconstrained. We illustrate emerging macroscopic characteristics of this system, showing that the seismic recurrence period τ becomes shorter as Γ and Θ decreases, where Γ = η I / η L , the viscosity ratio of the viscosities of the internal fault-embedded to external loading plates, respectively, and Θ = σ Y / σ L the stress ratio of the elastic limit of the fault to far-field loading stress. When the system embeds multiple, randomly distributed faults, stress transfer results in recurrence period deviations, however the time-averaged recurrence period of each fault show the same dependence on Γ and Θ, illustrating a characteristic collective behavior. The control of these parameters prevails even when initial pre-stress was randomly assigned in terms of the spatial arrangement and orientation on the internal plate, mimicking local fluctuations. Our study shows the relevance of macroscopic rheological properties of tectonic plates on the earthquake occurrence in plate interiors, as opposed to local factors, proposing a viable model for the seismic behavior of continent interiors in the context of large-scale, long-term deformation of interacting tectonic plates.

The 28 October 1891 Nobi earthquake was one of the largest intraplate earthquakes in Japan, with an estimated magnitude of 8.0 determined by the Japan Meteorological Agency. It occurred in central Japan on the Eurasian Plate, beneath which the young Philippine Sea Plate is subducting. The geometry of this plate is not smooth; rather, beneath western Japan it appears distorted over a relatively short lateral distance. Beneath the Kinki region of central Japan, the subduction angle is approximately horizontal, and the Nobi earthquake occurred just above the horizontal section of the Philippine Sea slab. Temporary seismic stations were deployed in this area to investigate local seismic structure and its possible relationship to the cause of the earthquake. Crustal structure was investigated using receiver function analysis with a spatially dense temporary seismic network. A clear image of the subducted Philippine Sea slab was resolved, with ridge-like structures beneath the epicentral area of the Nobi earthquake. The ridge-like structure is in contact with the continental crust, and the fault plane of the Nobi earthquake is located at the edge of one such structure; i.e., in the contact area. The unique structure of the area is inferred to cause stress concentration and strain accumulation on local faults, which resulted in the large size of the Nobi earthquake.

The M s7.8 Tangshan earthquake occurred on 28 July 1976 at 03:42 CST. Approximately 15 h later, the M s7.1 Luanxian earthquake occurred approximately 40 km northeast of the main shock. The two earthquakes formed different surface rupture zones. The surface rupture of the Tangshan earthquake was NNE-trending and more than 47 km long. The surface rupture of the Luanxian earthquake was more than 6 km long and consisted of two sections, forming a protruding arc to the west. The north and south sections were NE- and NW-trending and 2 km and 4 km long, respectively. A trench was excavated in Sanshanyuan Village across the NE-trending rupture of the Luanxian earthquake, at the macroscopic epicenter of the Luanxian earthquake. Analysis of this trench revealed that the surface rupture is connected to the underground active fault. The following major conclusions regarding Late Quaternary fault activity have been reached. (1) The Sanshanyuan trench indicated that its fault planes trend NE30° and dip SE or NW at angles of approximately 69–82°. (2) The fault experienced four faulting events prior to the Luanxian earthquake at 27.98 ka with an average recurrence interval of approximately 7.5 ka. (3) The M s7.1 Luanxian earthquake resulted from the activity of the Luanxian Western fault and was triggered by the M s7.8 Tangshan earthquake. The seismogenic faults of the 1976 Ms7.1 Luanxian earthquake and the 1976 Ms7.8 Tangshan earthquake are not the same fault. This example of an M 7 earthquake triggered by a nearly M 8 earthquake after more than 10 h on a nearby fault is a worthy topic of research for the future prediction of strong earthquakes.

We document interactions between intermediate depth and interplate seismicity in the North Chile subduction zone, over a 25-year period (1990 - 2015). We show that the 2005 Mw 7.8 Tarapaca slab-pull earthquake was followed by 9 years of enhanced deep and shallow seismicity, together with the decrease of eastward average GPS velocities and associated interplate coupling, eventually leading to the 2014 Mw 8.1 Iquique megathrust earthquake. In contrast, megathrust ruptures (e.g. Mw 8.0 Antofagasta in 1995, or Mw 8.1 Iquique in 2014) initiate several years of silent background seismicity in the studied area, both at shallow and intermediate depths. The plunge of a rigid slab into a viscous asthenospheric mantle could explain the observed synchronization between deep and shallow seismicity, and their long-term interactions.

In April 2017, a sequence of earthquakes offshore Valparaiso, Chile, raised concerns of a potential megathrust earthquake in the near future. The largest event in the 2017 sequence was a M6.9 on April 24th, seemingly co-located with the last great-sized earthquake in the region - a M8.0 in March 1985. The history of large earthquakes in this region shows significant variation in rupture size and extent, typically highlighted by a juxtaposition of large ruptures interspersed with smaller magnitude sequences. We show that the 2017 sequence ruptured an area between the two main slip patches during the 1985 earthquake, re-rupturing a patch that had previously slipped during the October 1973 M6.5 earthquake sequence. A significant gap in historic ruptures exists directly to the south of the 2017 sequence, with large enough moment deficit to host a great-sized earthquake in the near future, if it is locked.

In July 2013, a sequence of more than 340 earthquakes was induced by reservoir stimulations and well‐control procedures following a gas kick at a deep geothermal drilling project close to the city of St. Gallen, Switzerland. The sequence culminated in an ML 3.5 earthquake, which was felt within 10–15 km from the epicenter. High‐quality earthquake locations and 3‐D reflection seismic data acquired in the St. Gallen project provide a unique data set, which allows high‐resolution studies of earthquake triggering related to the injection of fluids into macroscopic fault zones. In this study, we present a high‐precision earthquake catalog of the induced sequence. Absolute locations are constrained by a coupled hypocenter‐velocity inversion, and subsequent double‐difference relocations image the geometry of the ML 3.5 rupture and resolve the spatiotemporal evolution of seismicity. A joint interpretation of earthquake and seismic data shows that the majority of the seismicity occurred in the pre‐Mesozoic basement, hundreds of meters below the borehole and the targeted Mesozoic sequence. We propose a hydraulic connectivity between the reactivated fault and the borehole, likely through faults mapped by seismic data. Despite the excellent quality of the seismic data, the association of seismicity with mapped faults remains ambiguous. In summary, our results document that the actual hydraulic properties of a fault system and hydraulic connections between its fault segments are complex and may not be predictable upfront. Incomplete knowledge of fault structures and stress heterogeneities within highly complex fault systems additionally challenge the degree of predictability of induced seismicity related to underground fluid injections.

The northwestern Yunnan rift zone in the Yunnan Province of China is a seismically active region located along the western boundary of the Sichuan–Yunnan Block on the eastern margin of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 (Mw) occurred in this region on February 3, 1996. The Lijiang earthquake was the largest normal-faulting event to occur along the western boundary of the Sichuan–Yunnan Block in the last 40 years. In this study, we used L-band JERS-1 (Japanese Earth Resources Satellite-1) SAR data sets from two descending orbits to detect surface deformation signals surrounding the epicentral region in order to estimate the source parameters through an inversion of the displacement fields. The results indicated that the earthquake can be explained by slip along two segments of the ∼N–S trending listric normal fault, named the Lijiang–Daju fault. Coseismic deformation patterns and slip distributions revealed that the earthquake consisted of two sub-events, which were also suggested by seismological results. Based on an analysis of the static Coulomb stress change, the second sub-event was likely triggered by the first sub-event. The central segment of the Lijiang–Daju fault, which has an eastward-convex geometry, did not rupture during the earthquake. This phenomenon was probably related to a geometrical discontinuity at the fault-bend area of the Lijiang–Daju fault.

Intraplate earthquakes pose a significant seismic hazard in densely populated rift systems like the Lower Rhine Graben in Central Europe. While the locations of most faults in this region are well known, constraints on their seismogenic potential and earthquake recurrence are limited. In particular, the Holocene deformation history of active faults remains enigmatic. In an exposure excavated across the Schafberg fault in the southwestern Lower Rhine Graben, south of Untermaubach, in the epicentral region of the 1756 Duren earthquake (M L 6.2), we mapped a complex deformation zone in Holocene fluvial sediments. We document evidence for at least one paleoearthquake that resulted in vertical surface displacement of 1.2 ± 0.2 m. The most recent earthquake is constrained to have occurred after 815 AD, and we have modeled three possible earthquake scenarios constraining the timing of the latest event. Coseismic deformation is characterized by vertical offset of sedimentary contacts distributed over a 10-m-wide central damage zone. Faults were identified where they fracture and offset pebbles in the vertically displaced gravel layers and fracture orientation is consistent with the orientation of the Schafberg fault. This study provides the first constraint on the most recent surface-rupturing earthquake on the Schafberg fault. We cannot rule out that this fault acted as the source of the 1756 Duren earthquake. Our study emphasizes the importance of, and the need for, paleoseismic studies in this and other intracontinental regions, in particular on faults with subtle geomorphic expression that would not typically be recognized as being potentially seismically active. Our study documents textural features in unconsolidated sediment that formed in response to coseismic rupturing of the underlying bedrock fault. We suggest that these features, e.g., abundant oriented transgranular fractures in their context, should be added to the list of criteria used to identify a fault as potentially active. Such information would result in an increase of the number of potentially active faults that contribute to seismic hazards of intracontinental regions.

On 25 December 2016, the Mw 7.6 Chiloe earthquake broke a plate-boundary asperity in South- Central Chile near the center of the rupture zone of the Mw 9.5 Valdivia earthquake of 1960. To gain insight on decadal-scale deformation trends and their relation with the Chiloe earthquake, we combine geodetic, teleseismic and regional seismological data. GPS velocities increased at continental scale after the 2010 Maule earthquake, probably due to a readjustment in the mantle flow and an apparently abrupt end of the viscoelastic mantle relaxation following the 1960 Valdivia earthquake. It also produced an increase in the degree of plate locking. The Chiloe earthquake occurred within the region of increased locking, breaking a circular patch of ~15 km radius at ~30 km depth, located near the bottom of the seismogenic zone. We propose that the Chiloe earthquake is a first sign of the seismic reawakening of the Valdivia segment, in response to the interaction between postseismic viscoelastic relaxation and changes of interseismic locking between Nazca and South-America.

We investigated spatiotemporal change in the interplate seismic activity following the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake (M9.0) in the region where interseismic interplate coupling was relatively weak and large postseismic slip was observed. We classified earthquakes by their focal mechanisms to identify the interplate events and conducted hypocenter relocation to examine the detailed spatiotemporal distribution of interplate earthquakes in the mostly creeping area. The results show that many interplate earthquakes, including M~6 events, emerged immediately after the Tohoku-oki earthquake in areas where very few interplate earthquakes had been observed in the 88 previous years. The emergent earthquakes include repeating sequences, and the extremely long quiescence of small to moderate earthquakes before the Tohoku-oki earthquake suggests that the source areas for the post-M9 events slipped aseismically during the quiescence. The repeaters’ magnitudes decayed over time following the Tohoku-oki earthquake and some sequences disappeared within a year. The emergence of interplate earthquakes suggests that areas where aseismic slip had been dominant before the Tohoku-oki earthquake, started to cause seismic slip after the earthquake, probably due to the increased loading rate from the afterslip. The magnitude decrease and disappearance of repeaters can be interpreted as shrinkage in seismic areas around the repeaters’ sources as the loading rate decreased due to the afterslip decay over time. These observations suggest that changes in the loading rate can cause slip behavior transition between seismic and aseismic. This indicates that such loading-rate-dependent slip behavior plays an important role in the spatiotemporal distribution of earthquakes in interplate seismogenic zones.

Surface rupturing earthquakes produced by intraplate active faults generally have long recurrence intervals of a few thousands to tens of thousands of years. We here report the first evidence for an extremely short recurrence interval of 300 years for surface rupturing earthquakes on an intraplate system in Japan. The Kamishiro fault of the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line (ISTL) active fault system generated a Mw 6.2 earthquake in 2014. A paleoseismic trench excavation across the 2014 surface rupture showed the evidence for the 2014 event and two prior paleoearthquakes. The slip of the penultimate earthquake was similar to that of 2014 earthquake, and its timing was constrained to be after A.D. 1645. Judging from the timing, the damaged area, and the amount of slip, the penultimate earthquake most probably corresponds to a historical earthquake in A.D. 1714. The recurrence interval of the two most recent earthquakes is thus extremely short compared with intervals on other active faults known globally. Furthermore, the slip repetition during the last three earthquakes is in accordance with the time-predictable recurrence model rather than the characteristic earthquake model. In addition, the spatial extent of the 2014 surface rupture accords with the distribution of a serpentinite block, suggesting that the relatively low coefficient of friction may account for the unusually frequent earthquakes. These findings would affect long-term forecast of earthquake probability and seismic hazard assessment on active faults.

We examine the co-seismic Coulomb stress change induced by the 2015 Mw 7.8 Gorkha, Nepal earthquake and investigate its influence on the seismic hazard in the southern Tibetan Plateau. We find that the location of the aftershocks coincides with areas where stress was enhanced. This stress enhanced area also covers the west and the shallow fault section updip of the 2015 Gorkha earthquake rupture in the Main Himalayan Thrust fault (MHT), signaling the raising hazard of the seismic gaps in the west and south to Kathmandu. The 2015 Gorkha earthquake strongly interacted particularly with the normal and thrust faults in the distance of around 100–250 km from the rupture zone by bringing stress closer to the Coulomb failure. This fault interaction process increased stress by 12 kPa and 100 kPa at the southern end of the Tingkye and the Nyalam normal faults, respectively, triggering the Ms 5.9 Tingri earhquake on 25 May 2015 and the Ms 5.3 Nyalam earthquake on 26 May 2015. Stress in the Main Frontal Himalaya Thrust fault (MFT), the Main Boundary Thrust fault (MBT) in the Lalitpur area of Nepal was promoted by 40–100 kPa. Such stress transfer should facilitate the future rupture on these active faults and raise seismic hazard in the southern Tibetan Plateau.

Due to the continuous movement of underthrusting Indian plate beneath the Eurasian plate the strain energy accumulates, which is released substantially in the form of great earthquakes. It is yet to be released in the unruptured zone which lies between the two great earthquakes viz. 1934 Bihar-Nepal earthquake and 1905 Kangra earthquake. This zone has been termed as the Central Seismic Gap (CSG). The occurrence of previous great earthquakes and recent Nepal earthquakes, gives a clue to the probable location of future great earthquake. On the basis of analysis of seismicity in the locked portion and the stress drop analysis the CSG has been redefined and location of probable zone of future great earthquake has been demarcated.

The finite element numerical simulation method was used to investigate the impact of the Wenchuan earthquake on the seismic environment of the southern Longmenshan Mountain. The three-dimensional viscoelastic geological model, including the Longmenshan front-range fault, central fault, back-range fault, the Bayan Kala block, and the South China block, was constrained by the results of the geological survey, coseismic dislocation, and the GPS observation of Wenchuan and Lushan earthquakes. We studied how the calculation results were influenced by gravity potential energy caused by high altitude topography, the low velocity layer in the middle crust and the rupture of the Beichuan-Yingxiu and Jiangyou-Guanxian faults, by modifying the parameters of a model. The Wenchuan earthquake was simulated by reducing the Young’s modulus of the possible generating fault. We calculated the Coulomb stress of the Dayi blind fault, Dachuang-Shuangshi fault, and the “Y”-shaped blind thrust fault between the two faults above. The simulation results show that the Coulomb stress has a similar distribution on the fault planes of the southern Longmenshan faults zone caused by the Wenchuan earthquake, considering the low-velocity layer or the double-rupture surface. The Coulomb stress on the top of the Dachuan-Shuangshi fault surface was about 0 MPa, and it gradually reduced towards the southwest direction. At the source of the Lushan earthquake, the Coulomb stress was about −0.02 MPa. For the west branch of “Y”-shaped fault, the Coulomb stress on the fault surface was significantly reduced and was about −0.02–−0.03 MPa at the source of the Lushan earthquake; after the Wenchuan earthquake, the Coulomb stress on the east branch of the “Y”-shaped fault plane was about −0.01–0.03 MPa; for the Dayi fault, the Coulomb stress was increasingly obvious on the fault surface from the southwest to the northwest after the Wenchuan earthquake. Therefore, the Wenchuan earthquake could reduce the risk of an earthquake on the Dachuan-Shuangshi fault and the west branch of “Y”-shaped fault earthquake, but it increases the risk on the east branch of “Y”-shaped fault and the Dayi fault. The maximum Coulomb stress near the source was located on the Dayi fault. Considering the terrain and the simultaneous failure of the Beichuan-Yingxiu and Jiangyou-Guanxian, the presence of the low velocity layer increases the Coulomb stress on the four faults, and obviously increases towards the east branch of the “Y”-shaped fault and the Dayi fault. If the terrain and the low velocity layer are considered, compared with only the ruptured Beichuan-Yingxiu fault, the Beichuan-Yingxiu and Jiangyou-Guanxian faults’ simultaneous rupture increased the risk of earthquakes on the Dachuan-Shuangshi fault, the east branch of “Y”-shaped fault, and the Dayi hidden fault, but reduced the risk of the west branch of “Y” type fault. In any of the above models, the Coulomb stress changes on the four fault planes of southern Longmenshan Mountains were influenced by terrain. In the case of certain crust, mantle medium properties, and spatial structure, the existence of the low velocity layer on the west of the Longmenshan fault zone, the topographic features of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the Sichuan Basin, and the conditions for the simultaneous rupture of the central fault and the front-range fault during the Wenchuan earthquake, are the important factors that affect the Wenchuan earthquake to the Lushan earthquake. Among them, the terrain and low velocity layer have the most significant influence on the Coulomb failure stress for the area around the Lushan earthquake area caused by the Wenchuan earthquake. The effect of terrain features is more obvious in the north section of the selected section, yet the effect of the Wenchuan earthquake simultaneous rupture planes is smaller.

The seismicity in the Korean Peninsula has increased since the 2011 Mw9.0 Tohoku-Oki megathrust earthquake. Two strike-slip earthquakes with magnitudes of ML5.1 and 5.8 occurred in the southeastern Korean Peninsula on September 12, 2016. The two events occurred within 48 minutes. The ML5.8 earthquake was the largest event in the Korean Peninsula since 1978 when national seismic monitoring began. Both events produced strong high-frequency ground motions. More than 500 aftershocks with local magnitudes greater than or equal to 1.5 followed the events for two months. An unreported subsurface strike-slip fault with a dip of 65∘ to the east and a strike of N27∘ E was responsible for the earthquakes. The fault ruptured at depths of 11-16 km, resulting in a rupture plane of ∼26 km2. The aftershock distribution displayed horizontal streaks at a depth of ∼14 km, which was consistent with the focal mechanism solutions from long-period waveform inversion. The number of aftershocks decreased exponentially with time. The two ML5.1 and 5.8 earthquakes produced regional Coulomb stress changes of -4.9 to 2.5 bar. The spatial distribution of the aftershocks correlated with the Coulomb stress changes. The peak dynamic stress induced by strong ground motions reached 14.2 bar. The groundwater levels changed coseismically in some regions of decreased static stresses. The earthquakes on previously unidentified faults raised attention for the potential seismic hazards by earthquakes with long recurrence intervals.

The 2016 M w 7.8 Kaikōura earthquake continued a notable decade of damaging earthquake impacts in New Zealand. The effects were wide ranging across the upper South Island, and included two fatalities, tsunami, tens of thousands of landslides, the collapse of one residential building, and damage to numerous structures and infrastructure. We present a preliminary overview focused on the seismological aspects of this earthquake and the corresponding seismological response effort. The earthquake rupture was extremely complex, involving at least 13 separate faults extending over ∼150 km, from the epicenter in north Canterbury to near the Cook Strait. We use backprojection and slip inversion methods to derive preliminary insights into the rupture evolution, identifying south‐to‐north rupture, including at least three distinct southwest‐to‐northeast propagating phases. The last phase is associated with a strong second pulse of energy release in the northern half of the rupture zone ∼70 s after rupture initiation, which we associate with the Kekerengu–Needles faults where some of the largest surface displacements (dextral) were observed. The mechanism of the mainshock was oblique thrust and relocated aftershocks show a range of thrust and strike‐slip mechanisms across three dominant spatial clusters. GeoNet datasets collected during the Kaikōura earthquake will be crucial in further unraveling details of the complex earthquake rupture and its implications for seismic hazard. Ground motions during the earthquake exceeded 1 g at both ends of the rupture. Spectral accelerations exceeded 500‐year return period design level spectra in numerous towns in the upper South Island, as well as in parts of the capital city of Wellington at critical periods of 1–2 s, influenced by site/basin and directivity effects. Another important part of the response effort has been the provision of earthquake forecasts, as well as consideration of the implications of slow slip on the Hikurangi subduction interface triggered as a result of the Kaikōura earthquake.

Seismic hazard assessment of slow active fault zones is challenging as usually only a few decades of sparse instrumental seismic monitoring is available to characterize seismic activity. Tectonic features linked to the observed seismicity can be mapped by seismic imaging techniques and/or geomorphological and structural evidences. In this study, we investigate a seismic lineament located in the Swiss Alpine foreland, which was discussed in previous work as being related to crustal structures carrying in size the potential of a magnitude M 6 earthquake. New, low-magnitude (−2.0 ≤ ML ≤ 2.5) earthquake data are used to image the spatial and temporal distribution of seismogenic features in the target area. Quantitative and qualitative analyses are applied to the waveform dataset to better constrain earthquakes distribution and source processes. Potential tectonic features responsible for the observed seismicity are modelled based on new reinterpretations of oil industry seismic profiles and recent field data in the study area. The earthquake and tectonic datasets are then integrated in a 3D model. Spatially, the seismicity correlates over 10–15 km with a N–S oriented sub-vertical fault zone imaged in seismic profiles in the Mesozoic cover units above a major decollement on top of the mechanically more rigid basement and seen in outcrops of Tertiary series east of the city of Fribourg. The M S6.4 Menyuan earthquake occurred on the northern side of the Lenglongling fault (LLLF) in the mid-western of the Qilian-Haiyuan fault zone on January 21, 2016. The earthquake epicenter was distant from the Minle-Damaying and Huangcheng-Shuangta faults, eastern of the Northern Qilian Shan fault zone. A near northwest-striking rupture plane intersects the two faults at a certain angle. The focal mechanism solution shows that this was a thrust-type earthquake, slightly different from the strike-slip movement with a thrust component of the LLLF. Field geological mapping, tectonic geomorphology analysis, trench excavation and 14C dating reveal that (1) the LLLF has been obviously active since the Holocene, and may behave with characteristic slip behavior and produce M W7.3–7.5 earthquakes; (2) the LLLF appears as a flower structure in terms of structure style, and dips NNE at a steep angle; and (3) the most recent earthquake event occurred after 1815–1065 a BP. An associated fault, the Northern Lenglongling fault (NLLLF), is located at the northwestern end of the LLLF. Consequently, the NLLLF was continually subject to tectonic pushing effects from the left-lateral shear at the end of the LLLF, and, accordingly, it bent and rotated outward tectonically. Subsequently, the fault deviated from the dominant rupture azimuth and activity weakened. In the late Quaternary, it behaved as a thrust fault with no obvious deformation at the surface. This is indicated by the arc shape, with a micro-protrusion northeastward, and no geologic or geomorphic signs of surface rupturing since the late Quaternary. However, such faults could still rupture at depth, producing moderate-strong earthquakes. The geometric and kinematic properties of the NLLLF are in good agreement with the occurrence and kinematic properties of nodal plane 2, and with the distribution characteristics of the aftershocks and seismic intensity. Therefore, the NLLLF is a more suitable seismogenic structure for the M S 6.4 Menyuan earthquake. In addition, the thrust movement of the NLLLF accommodates subsequent movement of the LLLF. During the historical evolution of the NLLLF, the LLLF and the NLLLF have affected the local topography through tectonic uplift.

An uncommon coastal sedimentary record combines evidence for seismic shaking and coincident tsunami inundation since AD 1000 in the region of the largest earthquake recorded instrumentally: the giant 1960 southern Chile earthquake (Mw 9.5). The record reveals significant variability in the size and recurrence of megathrust earthquakes and ensuing tsunamis along this part of the Nazca-South American plate boundary. A 500-m long coastal outcrop on Isla Chiloé, midway along the 1960 rupture, provides continuous exposure of soil horizons buried locally by debris-flow diamicts and extensively by tsunami sand sheets. The diamicts flattened plants that yield geologically precise ages to correlate with well-dated evidence elsewhere. The 1960 event was preceded by three earthquakes that probably resembled it in their effects, in AD 898–1128, 1300–1398 and 1575, and by five relatively smaller intervening earthquakes. Earthquakes and tsunamis recurred exceptionally often between AD 1300 and 1575. Their average recurrence interval of 85 years only slightly exceeds the time already elapsed since 1960. This inference is of serious concern because no earthquake has been anticipated in the region so soon after the 1960 event, and current plate locking suggests that some segments of the boundary are already capable of producing large earthquakes. This long-term earthquake and tsunami history of one of the world's most seismically active subduction zones provides an example of variable rupture mode, in which earthquake size and recurrence interval vary from one earthquake to the next.

The 17 December 2016 Solomon Islands earthquake (M_w 7.9) initiated ~103 km deep in the subducting Solomon Sea slab near the junction of the Solomon Islands and New Britain trenches. Most aftershocks are located near the Solomon Islands plate boundary megathrust west of Bougainville, where previous large interplate thrust faulting earthquakes occurred in 1995 (M_w 7.7) and 1971 (M_w 8.0). Teleseismic body wave modeling and aftershock relocations indicate that the initial 30 s of the 2016 rupture occurred over depths of 90 to 120 km on an intraslab fault dipping ~30° to the southwest, almost perpendicular to the dipping slab interface. The next 50 s of rupture took place at depths of 32 to 47 km in the deeper (Domain C) portion of the overlying megathrust fault dipping ~35° to the northeast. High susceptibility to triggering in the region accounts for this compound rupture of two separate fault planes.

Rupture history of the 2016 Mw 7.0 Kumamoto earthquake is constrained by using the waveforms of strong motion observations, teleseismic broadband body waves, and long-period surface waves. Its fault geometry is modeled with Hinagu (orienting 205° and dipping 73°) and Futagawa (orienting 235° and dipping 60°), two segments. The result reconciles the difference between moment tensor solutions and the surface fault trace. It reveals a complex rupture process that initiated on the Hinagu segment in dextral motion, propagated northeastward unilaterally, and after 15 s ceased near Aso volcano with normal fault motion. The average slip, rise time, and slip rate are 1.8 m, 2.0 s, and 1.2 m/s, respectively. The rupture broke through an ~30° fault intersection without notable delay, which can be a result of dynamic “unclamping.” The northeast boundary of the largest asperity might mark the bottom of the seismogenic zone, which becomes shallower gradually near Aso volcano.

Earthquake is a major disaster responsible for vast losses both life and infrastructure. Pakistan is one of the highly earthquake prone areas in Asia. The present study is carried out to investigate the dynamics of disastrous Awaran earthquake. The 2013 Mw 7.7 Awaran earthquake and its Mw 6.8 aftershock caused numerous loss of lives and vast infrastructure damages. The earthquake triggered along Hoshab fault rupturing 230 km of the fault. The rupture propagated at 3 Km/s on average and was concentrated in top 10 km with no major displacement in the underlying decollement. The rupture released a cumulative moment of 5.4 x 1020 Nm. This study reveals that although Hoshab fault originated as thrust fault, the slip was purely strike slip during the earthquake and that the rigid block rotation of southeastern Makran is responsible for the Awaran earthquake. The study concludes that the earthquake significantly increased the coulomb stress on Makran mega thrust and strike slip faults in Chaman fault system, hence increasing the risk of a major seismic event. Therefore, in order to prevent major loss of lives and infrastructure damages; designing of new building codes, reassessing the seismic hazard of the region and marking of hidden faults is of utmost importance.

This paper presents the results of reconstruction of the modern tectonic stress field of the northern part of the Kuril–Okhotsk region prior to the May 24, 2013 deep-focus earthquake. This earthquake is the strongest deep-focus earthquake not only in the Okhotsk region but also in the world over the entire period of seismic observations. The tectonic stress field is reconstructed using the method of cataclastic analysis (MCA) of the earthquake source mechanism data. New data on the depth variations of regional tectonic stress field are obtained.

The July 3rd, 2015 Pishan, China Mw 6.4 earthquake occurred within the Hetian fold belt, a frontal thrust region between the Northwestern Tibetan Plateau and the Tarim basin. We investigate the fault geometry and the rupture process of the Pishan earthquake based on joint inversion of teleseismic body waves and InSAR measurements. Our results show that the top of the fault that ruptured in the Pishan earthquake is buried 5 ± 2 km beneath the surface and that the earthquake ruptured only a segment of a deeply-seated detachment lying under the Hetian fold belt. Our inferred coseismic slip model shows two slip asperities, located in the depth range of about 7–9 km and 10–11 km. Additionally, we resolve a slip deficit region between the slip asperities, which might indicate friction heterogeneity on the fault plane. The earthquake ruptured for ∼15 s, releasing a total seismic moment of 4.7 × 10 18 N m. We also show that the latest Pishan earthquake caused positive Coulomb stress changes on back thrust faults, potentially decreasing the time to the next earthquake on those faults. Based on our Pishan coseismic slip model, along with both the trend of the anticline system and the pattern of coseismic deformation, we envision an ongoing east-west extensional growth of the anticlines in the Western Kunlun frontal thrust region in addition to the northern underthrusting of the Northwestern Tibetan Plateau below the Tarim basin.

The 2016 M-w 6.7 Imphal earthquake is one of the largest and instrumentally well-recorded seismic events to have occurred on the segment of the Indo-Burman plate boundary, where Indian and Burman plates converge in a roughly northeast direction (similar to 3-4 cm/yr). This segment of the plate boundary has not generated any great earthquakes in the documented history but is noted for its complex intraslab deformation, arc-parallel compression, and slip partitioning with the continental strike-slip Sagaing fault. Previous studies have noted a mix of faulting styles and hypocentral distribution, indicating the inherent complexities within this segment. Based on the teleseismic moment inversion of 88 P and SH waveforms from 70 global broadband seismic stations, we use the source model of the 2016 earthquake to corroborate the continuing intraslab deformation. The earthquake is sourced at a depth of 55 km, where the dip of the slab changes to similar to 50 degrees with the P axis oriented in the north-northeast-south-southwest direction. Our analysis of azimuths and plunges of P axes of 214 earthquakes (M-w >= 4: 5, Global Centroid Moment Tensor) is consistent with this trend. Previous studies have noted two distinct types of intraplate earthquakes along this segment: shallower events (25-75 km) due to arc-parallel bending and the deeper ones (90-150 km) in response to slab pull. Interplate seismicity is almost absent, and the potential for great earthquakes seems much lower compared with the rest of the eastern India plate boundary.

Subduction zones produce earthquakes on a set of faults that operate under a wide variety of conditions resulting from considerable variations in depth, temperature, rock type, and fluid pressure. These variations likely lead to variation in the stress levels that drives particular earthquakes and that in turn effects the magnitude of seismic shaking they produce. In the Mendocino Triple Junction (MTJ) region, intraplate faults within the mantle of the subducting plate fail regularly in energetic earthquakes while the adjacent thrust interface of the Cascadia subduction zone remains seismically quiet despite the likelihood that it operates at much lower levels of stress and strength. In 2012, as part of the Cascadia Initiative community experiment, an ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) array was deployed in the MTJ area, providing unusually dense data covering both the inter- and intra-plate earthquakes. Combining these data with onshore networks, we detect and relocate 1137 earthquakes with a three dimensional velocity model. We perform detailed spectral and time domain analysis to study variations in earthquake source properties between the different types of faults. We observe a wide variability of stress drops and systematic lateral and depth variations in the earthquake source spectra resulting from the different types of tectonic fault systems in this region: intraplate faults within the subducted oceanic mantle, the Mendocino transform plate boundary fault, and the thrust interface of the Cascadia subduction zone. Some of the depth variability of source spectra can be explained by the expected increase in rupture velocity with depth. However, the overall variation in stress drop estimates is consistent with the highest stress drop earthquakes occurring in the depth range predicted by strength envelopes. Moreover, the earthquakes in the vicinity of the thrust interface, likely including some within the subducted oceanic crust, show clearly lower stress drops and depletion of high-frequency radiation for their size compared to events in the oceanic mantle and along the transform fault at a given depth. Our results suggest that the variability in earthquake source spectra that can be expected in the Cascadia subduction zone is systematic and that the thrust interface operates at a lower stress level than the core of the subducted plate a few kilometers away.

An earthquake catalog created by the International Seismological Center (ISC) was analyzed, including 3898 earthquakes located in and around Japan between January 1964 and June 2012 shallower than 60 km with the body wave magnitude of 5.0 or larger. Clustered events such as earthquake swarms and aftershocks were removed from the ISC catalog by using a stochastic declustering method based on Epidemic-Type Aftershock Sequence (ETAS) model. A detailed analysis of the earthquake catalog using a simple scanning technique (ZMAP) shows that the long-term seismic quiescences lasting more than 9 years were recognized ten times along the subduction zone in and around Japan. The three seismic quiescences among them were followed by three great earthquakes: the 1994 Hokkaido-toho-oki earthquake (M (w) 8.3), the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake (M (w) 8.3), and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake (M (w) 9.0). The remaining seven seismic quiescences were followed by no earthquake with the seismic moment M (0) 3.0 x 10(21) Nm (M (w) 8.25), which are candidates of the false alarm. The 2006 Kurile Islands earthquake (M (w) 8.3) was not preceded by the significant seismic quiescence, which is a case of the surprise occurrence. As a result, when limited to earthquakes with the seismic moment of M (0) 3.0 x 10(21) Nm, four earthquakes occurred between 1976 and 2012 in and around Japan, and three of them were preceded by the long-term seismic quiescence lasting more than 9 years.

The 2011 M9.0 Tohoku-Oki megathrust earthquake produced strong ground motions with a peak ground acceleration of 1.52 cm/s 2 in the Korean Peninsula, inducing large dynamic-stress changes in the crust. Sixty-one triggered earthquakes with magnitudes of 0.5–2.5 including 17 unusual, spatially-clustered events were identified from continuous seismic record sections of dense seismic networks for 18 h following the megathrust earthquake. The triggered earthquakes occurred in regions of high seismicity. The earthquake occurrence frequency increased after the megathrust earthquake, keeping the Gutenberg-Richter b value invariant. The seismic occurrence rates decreased with time following a modified Omori law. The focal mechanism solutions of triggered earthquakes are consistent with those observed before the megathrust earthquake. An unusual earthquake swarm displays apparent migration with a speed of 28.6 ± 4.4 m/h. The changes in pore fluid pressure induced by strong seismic waves may have caused the triggering of earthquakes. The duration and strength of dynamic triggering may be highly dependent on the magnitude and distance of megathrust earthquake.

The Talala region in Saurashtra, Western India is one of the seismically active intraplate regions on the Earth. In recent past, this region has been site of moderate magnitude earthquakes as well as swarm-type earthquake activities. To understand the processes of earthquake generation in this intraplate setting, we constrained the earthquake distribution pattern along with the crustal seismic P-wave velocity (Vp) and Vp/Vs variations, using local earthquakes data. We inverted 2470 P- and 2230 S-wave arrival times from 550 earthquakes which were recorded over 11 seismic stations during 2007 to 2012. The earthquakes distribution shows that the seismicity is following ~ NNE–SSW trend, extending for a distance of ~ 25 km and up to 15 km in depth. The seismic tomographic images show that the swarm-type earthquake activities at shallower depths are mostly in the zone of lower Vp and lower Vp/Vs. Whereas, the moderate magnitude earthquakes are occurring in a ~ NW trending zone of higher Vp and higher Vp/Vs, possibly indicating a zone of crystallized mafic magma, which was transported from deeper Earth. This zone represents a pronounced heterogeneity and provides locale for stress accumulation in this region. After 2001 Bhuj earthquake (Mw 7.7), due to stress perturbation the ~ NNE–SSW trending fault got activated and caused bigger earthquakes in this region. Moreover, the crystallized mafic magma is possibly feeding fluids at shallower depths for causing the swarm-type earthquake activities in this region.

The 1969 and 1975 great Kurile earthquakes occurred along the Kurile trench. Tsunamis generated by these earthquakes were observed at tide gauge stations around the coasts of the Okhotsk Sea and Pacific Ocean. To understand rupture process of the 1969 and 1975 earthquakes, slip distributions of the 1969 and 1975 events were estimated using tsunami waveform inversion technique. Seismic moments estimated from slip distributions of the 1969 and 1975 earthquakes were 1.1 × 1021 Nm (Mw 8.0) and 0.6 × 1021 Nm (Mw 7.8), respectively. The 1973 Nemuro-Oki earthquake occurred at the plate interface adjacent to that ruptured by the 1969 Kurile earthquake. The 1975 Shikotan earthquake occurred in a shallow region of the plate interface where was not ruptured by the 1969 Kurile earthquake. Further, like a sequence of the 1969 and 1975 earthquakes, it is possible that a great earthquake may occur in a shallow part of the plate interface a few years after a great earthquake that occurs in a deeper part of the same region along the trench.

Two oceanic plates (the Pacific (PA) and Philippine Sea (PH)) subduct beneath the land plate and they forms deeper (PH-PA) and shallower (land-PH) plate boundaries beneath Kanto. Remarkably enhanced seismicity was observed in the densely populated area after the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake which cannot simply be explained by the southern expansion of the postseismic slip of the earthquake. We examine interplate repeating earthquakes to constrain the relative plate motion across aseismically slipping faults. The repeater slip rates show creep rates in the deeper and shallower boundaries respectively increased to 2.4-6.6 times and 1.3-6.2 times the pre-Tohoku-oki rates. In addition, the repeater slip directions show no change larger than 4 degree in the deeper boundary. The interplate creep rates and slip directions suggest regional movements of both the two plates had accelerated. They probably caused the seismicity increase, frequent slow slips on the shallower boundary, and enhanced probability of larger earthquakes.

Earthquakes in the Indo-Burmese wedge occur due to India-Sunda plate motion. These earthquakes generally occur at depth between 25 and 150 km and define an eastward gently dipping seismicity trend surface that coincides with the Indian slab. Although this feature mimics the subduction zone, the relative motion of Indian plate predominantly towards north, earthquake focal mechanisms suggest that these earthquakes are of intra-slab type which occur on steep plane within the Indian plate. The relative motion between the India and Sunda plates is accommodated at the Churachandpur-Mao fault (CMF) and Sagaing Fault. The 4 January 2016 Manipur earthquake (M 6.7) is one such earthquake which occurred 20 km west of the CMF at ∼60 km depth. Fortunately, this earthquake occurred in a very sparse population region with very traditional wooden frame houses and hence, the damage caused by the earthquake in the source region was very minimal. However, in the neighbouring Imphal valley, it caused some damage to the buildings and loss of eight lives. The damage in Imphal valley due to this and historical earthquakes in the region emphasizes the role of local site effect in the Imphal valley.

Using numerical modeling we show the emergence of cyclic slip behavior of faults from stress feedback through an idealized fault, its surrounding plates and far-field tectonic stress. The tectonic stress is exerted on the fault through a force applied along an idealized plate margin, acting on the fault, resulting from the interactions of viscous embedding and external plates. We find that, in such coupled system, the interaction of plates results into feedback with periodic deformation, slip along the fault and episodic plate margin motions. The viscosity of the embedding and loading plates primarily control the stress-loading time and hence the slip recurrence interval. For an Earth-like range of lithospheric viscosities, we derive a power-law with negative exponent, −0.99 to −0.5, scaling the recurrence period with loading-rate, providing an explanation for the observables from paleoseismology and geodesy. The feedback between single fault and far-field stress that arises from interactions of deforming plates provides a context to understand the earthquake cycle within continents, while reconciling the short-term seismic deformation to the long-term plate tectonics frame.

The paper analyzes available seismic data of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the catastrophic earthquake with Ms = 7.9 occurred in Nepal on April 25, 2015. It is shown that this earthquake (also called Gorkha) in its coseismic stage reflected the dynamic situation in the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian plates, and occurred in the area of the Main Frontal Thrust in the Himalayas. In the last 15 years, the seismicity of this area has demonstrated the features of strong earthquake preparation. The study results are presented for the early postseismic stage (in the first month after the mainshock). It is found that the pattern of a decrease in aftershock activity is similar to that obtained by Tatevossian and Aptekman (2008) for the world’s earthquakes with M > 8. It is regular in the first 11–16 days and can be described by the Omori law, whereas on 17th day after the mainshock, the exponent characterizing the rate of change in the flow of events becomes to irregular. The spatial and temporal distribution of aftershocks of the 2015 Gorkha earthquake qualitatively and quantitatively indicates the heterogeneity of a seismogenic interface of the Himalayan arc collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian plates.

The 2015 Mw 7.1 earthquake on the Charlie-Gibbs transform fault along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is the latest in a series of seven large earthquakes since 1923. We propose that these earthquakes form a pair of quasi-repeating sequences with the largest magnitudes and longest repeat times for such sequences observed to date. We model teleseismic body waves and find that the 2015 earthquake ruptured a distinct segment of the transform from the previous 1998 earthquake. The two events display similarities to earthquakes in 1974 and 1967, respectively. We observe large oceanic transform earthquakes to exhibit characteristic slip behavior, initiating with small slip near the ridge, and propagating unilaterally to significant slip asperities nearer the center of the transform. These slip distributions combined with apparent segmentation support multimode slip behavior with fault slip accommodated both seismically during large earthquakes and aseismically in between.

Moderate-to-large damaging earthquakes in the peninsular part of the Indian plate do not support the long-standing belief of the seismic stability of this region. The historical record shows that about 15 damaging earthquakes with magnitudes from 5.5 to ~ 8.0 occurred in the Indian peninsula. Most of these events were associated with the old rift systems. Our analysis of the 2001 Bhuj earthquake and its 12-year aftershock sequence indicates a seismic zone bound by two linear trends (NNW and NNE) that intersect an E–W-trending graben. The Bouguer gravity values near the epicentre of the Bhuj earthquake are relatively low (~ 2 mgal). The gravity anomaly maps, the distribution of earthquake epicentres, and the crustal strain-rate patterns indicate that the 2001 Bhuj earthquake occurred along a fault within strain-hardened mid-crustal rocks. The collision resistance between the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate along the Himalayas and anticlockwise rotation of the Indian plate provide the far-field stresses that concentrate within a fault-bounded block close to the western margin of the Indian plate and is periodically released during earthquakes, such as the 2001 M W 7.7 Bhuj earthquake. We propose that the moderate-to-large magnitude earthquakes in the deeper crust in this area occur along faults associated with old rift systems that are reactivated in a strain-hardened environment.

Since March 2014, an unusually large amount of earthquakes occur southeast of the city of Darmstadt in the northern Upper Rhine Graben. During the period, until April 2015, we have recorded 356 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from ML = −0.6 to 4.2. We identified two source clusters separated laterally by about 5 km. The hypocentres within these clusters are aligned vertically extending over a depth range from 1 to 8 km with a lateral extent of about 1 to 2 km. Focal mechanisms show left-lateral strike-slip movements; b values are changing with time between b = 0.6 and b = 0.9. This is the first time in almost 150 years that such high earthquake rates have been observed in the region. Historical accounts dating back to the nineteenth century report of over 2000 felt earthquakes over a time span from 1869 to 1871. From these, maximum intensities of VII have been estimated. Other seismic activities in the region were reported in the 1970s. The observations of the 2014–2015 earthquake series do not completely match a typical main shock–aftershock sequence or a typical earthquake swarm. Especially the activity at the beginning of the earthquake series may be considered as a mixture of a main shock–aftershock sequence and a short-lasting swarm event. Whether or not the time gap between the current seismic activity, which actually takes place at the same locations as parts of the seismic swarm in 1869–1871, and the seismic activity in the nineteenth century or the seismic activity in the 1970s can be interpreted as a seismic cycle remains unclear.

The 30 May 2015 Chichi-jima M8 earthquake is one of the largest deep focus earthquakes ever recorded and its depth of 682 km puts it near the base of the mantle transition zone. Before source mechanisms and slip models of this earthquake can be reliably assessed, a better understanding of the tectonic setting and structures of the region near the origin is required. Here we present evidence from receiver functions, a method of isolating subsurface material contrast with converted seismic waves, that the earthquake initiated within the upper mantle transition zone, above a significantly depressed 660 km phase boundary. Additionally, we observe multiple conversions within and below the transition zone, which we associate with seismic waves passing into and out of segments of the subducting Pacific plate. From this, we infer slab material is piling up at the base of the transition zone and segments are penetrating into the lower mantle.

We developed a new method to classify the faulting types of small earthquakes using interevent waveform similarity and applied it to earthquakes in the northeast Japan subduction zone. In the method, we used separate time windows for P and S waves and established a relationship between waveform similarity and differences in focal mechanisms from event pairs whose focal mechanisms we know. Then we applied the relationship to many pairs of such focal-mechanism-known events (5607 from the moment tensor catalogue and 3623 events from the interplate repeating earthquakes catalogue) and focal-mechanism-unknown events for the period from 1984 to 2013. As a result, 8984 earthquakes were newly classified into interplate (N = 5401), noninterplate thrust (N = 631), normal (N = 1070), and strike-slip faulting earthquakes (N = 165). From the new data set, which doubles the number of mechanism types, we confirmed that there have been almost no interplate earthquakes in the area of large coseismic slip of the Tohoku-oki earthquake since that event. We also saw that this trend continued until at least the end of 2013, suggesting a nearly complete stress release and slow interplate stress recovery. The abundant interplate aftershocks also indicate the precise spatial extent of postsesimic slip, which is usually difficult to obtain from land-based geodetic data. The postseismic slip also suggests stress concentration at the asperities of the 1968 Tokachi-oki (M7.9) and 1994 Sanriku-oki (M7.6) earthquakes. The present-day faulting types offshore Tohoku correlated well with the static-stress change from the Tohoku-oki earthquake, suggesting a stress state change during the earthquake cycle of megathrust earthquakes.

The complete surface deformation of 2015 Mw 8.3 Illapel, Chile earthquake is obtained using SAR interferograms obtained for descending and ascending Sentinel-1 orbits. We find that the Illapel event is predominantly thrust, as expected for an earthquake on the interface between the Nazca and South America plates, with a slight right-lateral strike slip component. The maximum thrust-slip and right-lateral strike slip reach 8.3 and 1.5 m, respectively, both located at a depth of 8 km, northwest to the epicenter. The total estimated seismic moment is 3.28 × 1021 N.m, corresponding to a moment magnitude Mw 8.27. In our model, the rupture breaks all the way up to the sea-floor at the trench, which is consistent with the destructive tsunami following the earthquake. We also find the slip distribution correlates closely with previous estimates of interseismic locking distribution. We argue that positive coulomb stress changes caused by the Illapel earthquake may favor earthquakes on the extensional faults in this area. Finally, based on our inferred coseismic slip model and coulomb stress calculation, we envision that the subduction interface that last slipped in the 1922 Mw 8.4 Vallenar earthquake might be near the upper end of its seismic quiescence, and the earthquake potential in this region is urgent.

The Namie (Japan) 2016.11.21 Mw 6.9 earthquake (d = 9.0 km) initiated a tsunami which, contrary to forecasts of up to 3 m based on preliminary earthquake magnitude, nowhere exceeded 1.4 m. The hypocentre of the main shock was bordered in the succeeding 24 h by a tight cluster of 24 M ≤4.5 shallow (d ≤ 20 km) earthquakes. Two of them nucleated close to a M4.6 tremor that had preceded the main earthquake by 2.34 h, raising the possibility that a single structure hosted all three. Granted the ultimate cause was subduction at the Japan Trench, these events reaffirm the need for focused seafloor monitoring and fault history to supplement teleseismic data for realistic tsunami forecasting. Earthquake clustering in the 24 h after the main earthquake may also reflect a mode of megathrust segmentation which discourages the generation of great (Mw ∼ 9) earthquakes.
