The popularity of concurrent transmissions (CT) has soared after recent studies have shown their feasibility on the four physical layers specified by BLE 5, hence providing an alternative to the use of IEEE 802.15.4 for the design of reliable and efficient low-power wireless protocols. However, to date, the extent to which physical layer properties affect the performance of CT has not yet been investigated in detail. This article fills this gap and provides an extensive study on the impact of the physical layer on CT-based solutions using IEEE 802.15.4 and BLE 5. We first highlight through simulation how the impact of errors induced by relative carrier frequency offsets on the performance of CT highly depends on the choice of the underlying physical layer. We then confirm these observations experimentally on real hardware and with varying environmental conditions through an analysis of the bit error distribution across received packets, unveiling possible techniques to effectively handle these errors. We further study the performance of CT-based data collection and dissemination protocols in the presence of RF interference on a large-scale testbed, deriving insights on how the employed physical layer affects their dependability. Named Data Networking (NDN) is a promising architecture that aims to natively satisfy emerging applications such as the Internet of Things (IoT). Therefore, enabling NDN in real-world IoT deployments is becoming essential in order to benefit from Information Centric Networking (ICN) features. To design realistic NDN-based communication solutions for IoT, revisiting mainstream technologies such as low-power wireless standards may be the key. In this paper, we explore NDN forwarding over IEEE 802.15.4 following two steps. First, we mathematically model a broadcast-based forwarding strategy for NDN over constrained networks with the IEEE 802.15.4 technology in mind. The model estimates the number of frames transmitted and the mean round-trip time per request, under content popularity considerations. Second, based on mathematical and experimental observations of the broadcast-based forwarding at network level, we elaborate Named-Data Carrier-Sense Multiple Access (ND-CSMA), an adaptation of the Carrier-Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) algorithm used in IEEE 802.15.4. TSCH (Time-Slotted Channel Hopping) and 6TiSCH (IPv6 over the TSCH mode of IEEE 802.15.4e) low-power wireless networks are becoming prominent in the industrial Internet of Things (IoT) and other areas where high reliability is needed in conjunction with energy efficiency. Due to the complexity of IoT deployments, network simulations are typically used for pre-deployment design and validation. However, it is currently difficult and time-consuming to simulate large-scale IoT networks with thousands of nodes. This paper proposes TSCH-Sim: a new discrete event simulator for IEEE 802.15.4-2015 TSCH and 6TiSCH networks. The evaluation shows that simulation results obtained with TSCH-Sim show a good match with results from other simulators that are commonly used to investigate TSCH networks. At the same time, TSCH-Sim is faster than these alternatives at least by an order of magnitude, making it more practical to carry out simulations of large networks.
