Despite English teachers' acknowledgement of the plurality of English and the emergence of different varieties of the language, the actual manifestations of this plurality and the associated principles do not seem to be equally embraced in their classroom approach. Against this background, this study investigated Iranian English teachers' conceptions of English as an International Language (EIL) and their corresponding instructional practices through semistructured interviews and non-participant classroom observations. Drawing upon the theory of planned behavior (TPB), as the theoretical/analytical framework, the researchers explored the participant teachers' behavioral, normative, and control beliefs underlying their intentions and actual classroom practices with regard to EIL. Findings revealed that although the teachers acknowledged the importance of raising learners' awareness of EIL in different aspects of their language use, they still leaned towards standard American or British English in their actual instructional practices. Such propensity was informed by their attitudes toward the inclusion of EIL principles, their perceptions of the existing social pressures, and their perceived difficulty of adopting an EIL-aware pedagogy. Moreover, the participant teachers' actual classroom instructions were found to be incongruent with their beliefs about the importance of raising students' awareness regarding different English varieties. Implications for language teacher education are discussed.

This study explored possible reasons why IELTS candidates usually score low in writing by investigating the effects of two different test designs and scoring criteria on Iranian IELTS candidates' obtained grades in IELTS and World Englishes (WEs) essay writing tests. To this end, first, a WEs essay writing test was preliminarily designed. Then, 17 Iranian IELTS candidates wrote two essays on the same topic, one under the IELTS test condition and one under the WEs test condition. Each of the 34 obtained essays was scored six times, three times based on IELTS scoring criteria, each time by a different rater, and then, three times based on WEs scoring criteria. The results of repeated-measures ANOVA showed that test design and scoring criteria had significant effects on essay grades. The study concludes that some of the reasons why IELTS candidates usually score low in writing may be rooted in the test design and scoring criteria of the IELTS essay writing test, not necessarily in IELTS candidates' weaknesses in writing. The implications of the study focus on the importance and relevance of the results to IELTS candidates, international students, and the future of assessing writing in World Englishes contexts.

Developing L2 learners' emotional balance through adaptive regulation is a significant determinant of successful learning. Despite the recent surge of interest in emotion regulation (ER) programs, research on L2 learners' ER strategies is surprisingly underdeveloped. To address this gap, the current qualitative study explored ten L2 learners' understanding of achievement emotions and ER strategies throughout a longitudinal ER-oriented training course. Data were collected from four rounds of semi-structured interviews and diaries at different junctures of time. Data analysis revealed that the most frequent ER strategies in the pre-training phase were distraction and suppression, which showed a gradual decrease in the post-training phases. However, the use of self-regulated learning strategies and reassurance had the lowest frequency, showing a great improvement during the post-training phases. Additionally, the students grew in regulating their emotions across four major areas: (a) sufficient perceived control over negative emotions in high-stakes situations, (b) use of explicit ER strategies, (c) efficient use of competency-oriented strategies, and (d) decreased distraction as a function of negative simulators. The study provides implications for employing ER-based training to transform students' negative emotional experiences into positive emotions.

The present quantitatively-driven mixed methods study aimed at exploring the effect of musical input as a mode on intermediate L2 learners' knowledge and retention of difficult words. The data were collected in two phases. In the experimental phase, quantitative data were collected from 40 learners. An innovative method was used for the purpose of developing the treatment in the quantitative phase. That is, we composed music for each difficult word to be utilized as an input mode in the treatment condition. In the qualitative phase, a subset of the quantitative sample took part in the semi-structured interviews. The quantitative results of this explanatory mixed methods study showed that the use of music as a mode positively affected the learners' learning and retention of the meaning of difficult words. However, the qualitative findings did not fully confirm the quantitative results.

Virtual social networks nowadays play a very important role in getting and receiving daily news. Therefore, it is necessary to know the extent and reasons for users to use this tool and compare it with other media. Therefore, it is essential to know the extent and reasons for users to utilize this tool and compare it with other media. This study aimed to investigate the comparison of the use of Ardebil people from social networks and other media in receiving the news. In this descriptive-inferential study 400 Ardabil people were randomly selected. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire developed by the researcher were obtained and completed by the participants. The data were then analyzed using SPSS software. Research findings show that participants prefer to gain news from social networks to other media and most of them think that using social media has been able to reduce the utilization of other media. The findings show that the use of social media in news coverage has somewhat reduced the amount of time spent watching television and satellite. The reasons for this media shift in news acquisition include the social networking content attractiveness in the indicators of accuracy and transparency, the speed of dissemination, the neutrality of news, the latest visual reports, the visual and auditory attractions, the attention to quality of programs, attention to Respondents cited low censorship, addressing issues of interest to audiences, using news images, and using expert view of other media as sources of news. The participants also believed that social networks have a low level of censorship and news silence. Since the national media should be the most important medium in getting the news to a community, as an emerging media social networks have been able to take deep root in human life. These networks have positive features, but on the other hand, they have problems that need special attention.

The current study examined the use of electronic textbooks designed as mobile applications for learning vocabulary in English among Iranian university students. To this end, 95 university students in an experimental (N = 50) and a control group (N = 45) participated in the study. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design was employed and over an academic semester, the participants used either traditional materials or mobile-based electronic textbooks for learning 600 words in English. To assess the outcomes from different learning conditions, receptive knowledge of the target vocabulary items was tested in three junctures of time (i.e. pre-, post-, and delayed post-test). Additionally, open-ended questionnaires and interviews were used to collect qualitative data from the experimental group to further investigate their perceptions of using mobile-based electronic textbooks for vocabulary learning. The findings revealed a significant main effect for time and both groups significantly improved their vocabulary knowledge from pre-test to post-test. Moreover, a significant main effect was found for using electronic textbooks on mobile devices, and the experimental group outperformed the control group on the post- and delayed post-tests. The qualitative findings revealed three perceived benefits, namely "episodic learning," "easy access to materials," and "enhanced enjoyment" for mobile assisted vocabulary learning through electronic textbooks. The perceived challenges were related to "health concerns," "distractions associated with mobile environments," and "external pressure resulting from excessive mobile use" among the participants. In general, the findings of the study shed light on the potential offered by mobile-based textbooks for learning English vocabulary, with implications for teachers and materials developers in language teaching programs.

Teachers' work in Iran has undergone two determining changes since 1979: The Islamicisation of the education system and, consequently, Islamic teacher education, with neoliberal policies, has accelerated in recent years. The authors believe Islamicisation has been integrated into neoliberal policies and together these have shaped teachers' practice in the last 40 years. This study examines the intertwined impacts of these two forces on teachers' work. To this end, we first present an analysis of economic reforms and the Islamicisation of education which affect teachers. We then review the findings on the impact of these two forces on three dimensions of the teaching practice that resulted from interviews with 16 teachers and studying the historical context: knowledge, autonomy, and teachers' networks.

Shame is a significant factor for psychological problems in adolescents. The present study aims to assess the Persian version of the Adolescent Shame-Proneness Scale (ASPS) among Iranian adolescents. Participants of this correlation study were 2291 high school students aged 12-18 (1296 girls and 1036 boys), selected through a multistage random cluster sampling method. The results indicated that the ASPS has adequate validity and reliability. Assessment of model fit using confirmatory factor analysis revealed satisfactory goodness of fit indices. Similar to the original version of ASPS, a three correlated factor model was confirmed in the present sample, and girls scored higher on all three subscales of ASPS. This scale can be a reliable and flexible instrument for measuring the significant emotion of shame in Iranian adolescents in research and clinical settings and can help expand the shame literature.

The current study was conducted to investigate whether test scores of Iranian English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners were equivalent across CBT and PBT modes, with 58 intermediate learners studying at a private language academy located in Behshahr city in northern Iran. Moreover, test takers' computer familiarity, attitudes, aversion, and testing mode preference were regarded as the potential issues to influence CBT test scores. Data were collected using CBT and PBT versions of Nelson Proficiency Multiple-Choice Tests and Computer Aversion, Attitudes, and Familiarity Index (CAAFI) questionnaire as well as a simple testing administration mode preference question. The participants produced similar scores across modes, although they insignificantly outperformed on the CBT version. Additionally, analysis of the overall scores on the CAAFI and mode preference question obtained from CBT testing session indicated no statistically significant correlation between computer familiarity, attitude, aversion, and mode preference variables and test takers' CBT scores. The qualitative findings of this study obtained by semi-structured interview revealed that most of the participants showed high preference and more advantages for CBT over PBT to rationalize why they preferred this mode of testing.

This study tended to investigate the effect of culture, as depicted in language, on the use of stance in the applied linguistics research articles of two groups: native speakers of Persian, and native speakers of English. The two corpora comprising the discussion sections of forty research articles from reliable journals were compared for amounts and types of stance. In order to find the cultural differences between native Persian and English researchers, the subtypes of stance devices adapted from Hyland's (2005b) model were used. Results showed that the groups used stance markers differently; more specifically, they employed hedges, boosters, attitude markers, and self-mentions differently. Furthermore, culture affects stance features as the meta-discourse devices employed by the researchers in writing the research article genre. The findings have implications for EFL learners and novice non-native writers to know the conventions and patterns as thinking devices for effective writing in academic communities of articles.

The present action-research study explored the experience of a co-educational class in a context where it was a total educational novelty. Generating data from a number of sources before, during, and after the course, the study portrays how the participants experienced initial challenges followed by mutual adaptability toward the end of the course. The findings of the study indicate how the experience has been culturally emancipatory with regard to bringing about reorientations in the learners' perceptions about the other gender. Particularly, the findings showed that the learners gradually developed a perceptual understanding regarding the social status of the other gender, mediated by the opportunities provided during the course that facilitated developing such an understanding. The study also demonstrates that the experience of this action-research study brought about relevant changes in the policies of the school and its transformational potentials for the participating learners' future careers.

This study investigated the continuous influence of applying formative assessment on EFL (English as a foreign language) learners' anxiety and listening efficacy. The participants, divided into an experimental and a control group, were 60 Iranian EFL learners in an English-language institute. This study thus highlights the pedagogical implications of assessment in EFL classrooms. Therefore, this report investigated the effect of formative testing used by teachers on students' achievement in EFL classes and its effect on reducing anxiety and improvement of listening efficacy. All in all, our hypothesis was that providing learners with formative testing during the instruction will have a beneficial impact on their improvement and learning. The sample consisted of one experimental and one control group. The data collected were analyzed by using t-test. The results revealed that there was a significant difference in the level of achievement of the treatment group in the intended matters (anxiety and listening efficacy in comparison to the control group in the summative test due to taking advantage of formative assessment).

This research investigated the effectiveness of a forgiveness education program on reducing anger and ethnic prejudice and improving forgiveness in Iranian adolescents. There were 224 (Persian, Azeri, and Kurdish) male and female students in 8th grade who were selected from 3 provinces: Tehran, Eastern Azerbaijan, and Kurdestan. Schools were randomly assigned to 2 groups of experimental (N = 123) and control (N = 101) students. Measures included the Enright Forgiveness Inventory, Spielberger's State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, and the Ethnic Prejudice Scale, administered at pretest, posttest, and follow-up. The experimental group had forgiveness education by classroom teachers. The results indicated that the experimental group was higher in forgiveness and lower in ethnic prejudice, state anger, trait anger, and anger expression compared with the control group. This difference was statistically significant in the follow-up phase. It seems that forgiveness education in schools can be an important means of reducing anger and ethnic prejudice.

Advent of technology has caused growing interest in using computers to convert conventional paper and pencil-based testing (Henceforth PPT) into Computer-based testing (Henceforth CBT) in the field of education during last decades. This constant promulgation of computers to reshape the conventional tests into computerized format permeated the language assessment field in recent years. But, enjoying advantages of computers in language assessment raise the concerns of the effects that computerized mode of testing may have on CBT performance. Thus, this study investigated the score comparability of Vocabulary in Use test taken by 30 Iranian undergraduate students studying at a state university located in Chabahar region of Iran (CMU) to see whether scores from two administrations of testing mode were different. Therefore, two similar tests were administered to the male and female participants on two testing mode occasions with four weeks interval. Employing One-Way ANOVA statistical test to compare the mean scores and Pearson Correlation test to find the relationship between mode preference and performance revealed that two sets of scores were not different and gender difference was not also considered a variable that might affect performance on CBT. Based on the results, computerized version of the test can be considered a favorable alternative for the state undergraduate students in Iran.

This study investigated the changes in public school social studies textbooks in general period of Iran (fourth and fifth grades) based on the emphasis on Facione critical thinking skills in the past three decades. In this study, content analysis of qualitative and quantitative methods was used to evaluate changes in textbook. For this purpose, the unit of analysis was sentence. Due to the limited population that includes all social studies textbooks from the years 1984-1985 to 2014-2015 of fourth and fifth grades (a total of 9 books) sampling and sample of the population selected for the study had not been made. The data gathering instruments were self-made content analysis checklist based on Facione elements and validity was determined by experts of education science. As well as the reliability of the instrument was calculated by the Ali Delaware formula showed 85% agreement coefficient. Overall, findings indicate that the social studies books in fourth and fifth grades of primary school, in terms of attention to other critical thinking skills were written in the last three decades is very weak. 90 new books written especially given the changes in the national curriculum document and document fundamental change was not anticipated and expected. Meanwhile fifth grade social studies book in terms of attention to other critical thinking skills (0%) compared to the fourth grade social studies books had poorer conditions.

Today country success in economic, social, political, cultural tendencies etc. … is approved to be the hostages and pawns of coherent and dynamic didactic system. The education and didactic programs for qualification improvement and dynamism need to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluation and scrutiny. Current study started with the goal of presenting faculty competency evaluation for the reason of qualitative improvement of Islamic Azad University. Research in terms of to the way of collecting and compiling the details descriptive survey and in terms of the goal and target type is so practical that by conducting general scrutiny in literature and subject history and past, we drawn the theoretical frame and conceptual model in this study. Nominee educational members' opinions faculty members (self-assessment), supervisors (superiors), students of (clients) Fars province different Islamic Azad Universities are as the research society. In this research, with researcher evaluation in 24 active units in Fars province, approximately 125000 persons were examined. That sample volume was selected equal to 380 persons by using the clustered random sampling method (Krejcie and Morgan formulas). For collecting data, we used a researcher-made questionnaire whose validity was confirmed by the specialists and its stability was calculated by using the Cronbach's alpha method equal to 0.84. Researcher-made questionnaire includes effective component in competency in five general axes for collecting the data. Then, with using 360-degree evaluation method, it was executed. For the data analysis, we used the descriptive statistic method and elicitation statistic (fact oral analysis, Wilcoxon and Friedman) and the results of the study are as follows: 1. drawing the model of competency evaluation of faculty (main dimension of evaluation indexes of faculty competencies), and 2. In the field of evaluation of the current situation from the dimensions and competence skill parameters, the ethical values, role, personal, and favorable statuses are evaluated. But in the performance and functional dimensions, and its subcomponents unfavorable status and lower than average level evaluated and the results of ranking of evaluation of dimensions of competencies of faculty in order to select the most priority is related to skill dimension, and the least priority is related to the functional and performance dimensions.

Universities play a critical role in the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals through the third mission, i.e. public engagement activities. However, female academics miss opportunities to be part of this mission because they are caught in many roles that prevent them from getting involved in the SDGs. In light of SDG5, "Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls," we conducted interviews with twenty female academics from Iran and the Philippines to investigate their aspirations, opportunities and experiences with public engagement activities. Our findings show that, while recent gender policies have enabled female academics to develop robust careers, their contributions beyond the walls of the university remain limited because of longstanding patriarchal structures, distrust in women's professional expertise and unchanged systemic constraints. By bringing women's engagement activities forward and supporting them in the delivery of the SDGs, we reframe current debates on women's roles in academia. We argue that HE institutions may enhance their third mission and better achieve the targets of SDGs by valuing women's work and facilitating their engagement activities that may lead to significant societal impact. We conclude our paper with a series of recommendations for policy and practice that support women's journeys in academia.

Work commitment in the organizations is a factor which leads to the development of discipline, sense of duty, morality, and improvement of human relationships at work. The existence of ethics in the organization, having commitment to the tasks and playing professional roles and behaviors in the best way and with no external control, cause inner peace and satisfaction. High level of work commitment in an organization will guarantee a rise in the productivity, the realization of sustainable development, the evolution of human cultural, the management stability, the economic order and the achievement of short-term and long-term goals of the organization. Several factors affect the various aspects of work commitment. This study aims to investigate the impact and the role of educational and administrative-organizational factors on the students' work commitment. The study is descriptive-correlational. The sample included 800 students of public universities in Isfahan, including University of Technology, University of Medical Sciences and the University of Isfahan who were selected using a sampling method proportional to size (438 girls and 362 boys). The research tool was the researcher-made questionnaire containing 30 questions in two educational and administrative-organizational aspects. The results of the questionnaire were analyzed using multivariate correlation coefficient (regression) method. The results showed that academic and administrative-organizational factors respectively affect the students' work commitment (P< 0.05).

Decisions related to textbook selection and evaluation are of great importance. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the three English language textbooks currently used at high schools in Iran from the high school English teachers' point of view. For this purpose, a 46-item questionnaire was developed about the five sections of the textbooks (vocabulary, reading, grammar, language functions, and pronunciation practice), their physical make-up, and practical concerns. Fifty high school teachers with more than five years of teaching experience were asked to reflect on the questions by checking one of the four options included. The results indicated that the textbooks are not acceptable from the teachers' point of view considering their five sections, their physical make-up, and some practical concerns.

Slang usage in modern age Iran is a popular phenomenon among most male and female teenagers. How pervasive this variation of language use is among various age and sex groups in Iran has been a question of debate given the significance of religion in a theological system of social structure. The work presented in this study aims to investigate the effect of age and sex on variability of slang usage. Sixty Iranian participants were selected, and then were divided into three age groups (i.e. primary school, high school, and senior university students) each group consisting of ten males and ten females. A self-made questionnaire in the form of Discourse Completion Test (DCT) describing nine situations of friendly conversations was given to the participants. They were asked to make their choice on the responses, which ranged from formal to very informal style (common teenage slang expressions), or to write down what they wish to say under each circumstance. The results of the chi-square tests indicated that slang usage among high school students is more frequent as compared with other age groups. Unlike the popular belief suggesting that slang is used by boys rather than girls, the findings suggested that young Iranians both male and female use slang as a badge of identity showing their attachment to the social group they wish to be identified with.

This study aims at investigating the use of critical thinking in high school social science textbooks based on Fars Province teachers' attitudes in order to present a model for textbook development. To achieve this goal, the use of the following skills in the social science textbooks was analyzed: reasoning, questioning, assessment of examples and statements, group work, interpretation, true judgment about issues, analysis and evaluation, logicality, and explicitness. It is a field study which was conducted in several high schools of Fars Province in Iran. The population of this study included 568 social science teachers. The sample was selected based on the stratified random sampling procedure so that 153 teachers participated in this study. The data were collected using a forty-four-item questionnaire based on Likert-scale, which was developed and validated by the researcher himself and some experts. The reliability coefficient was also estimated as 0.86. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, standard deviation, and coefficient of variations) and inferential statistics (Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis Non-parametric tests). The result showed that the teachers of the Social Studies Textbook evaluated assessment of examples and statements, and analysis and evaluation skills as not satisfactory respectively. They evaluated the other skills as fairly satisfactory. Teachers of Sociology Textbook 1 evaluated explicitness, assessment of examples and statements, analysis and evaluation, and interpretation skills as not satisfactory respectively. They also evaluated other skills as fairly satisfactory. Teachers of Sociology Textbook 2 evaluated explicitness as not satisfactory, logicality as satisfactory, and other skills as fairly satisfactory. Therefore it is possible to rank order the social science textbooks of high school as satisfactory and not satisfactory with regard to the use of critical thinking. In other words, Sociology Textbook 2, Social Studies Textbook, and Sociology Textbook 1 were ordered on a continuum of satisfaction from satisfactory to unsatisfactory, respectively. Lexical competence is now regarded to be at the heart of communicative competence. This is endorsed by psycholinguistic research and corpus linguistics which show more use of prefabricated chunks than rule-based constructions. The change has been embraced in ELT. But lexical needs are unique to the individuals, personally, professionally and academically. Research demonstrates that vocabulary learning strategies make learning more self-directed and transferrable to new situations but there is a need for training learners in the use of VLS. ELT coursebooks are agenda for classroom practices; hence a good place to incorporate learner training. This study analyzed local ELT materials to study to what extent insights from VLS research and learner training have informed the sampled coursebooks. The results show the new edition of Pre-University coursebook is a significant step in incorporating such insights however there is a long way before the treatment is adequate in the whole series.

Growth and advancement in educational systems are the most important characteristics of the present societies. This phenomenon, especially in recent decades, has become an important and sensitive issue in developing countries. The role of educational systems in the process of growth and persistent advancement of countries is accepted by everybody and education is regarded as a main base of advancement and progress. The outcome of this growth is changing the educational systems into learners' organizations. The most observable and effective character in educational system is the thinking element. Thinking and acquiring new information and the method of thinking and learning are the most important characteristics of human being and from other perspective, in new approaches; the great attention has been paid to teaching and learning as well. For acquiring this goal, paying attention to critical thinking is one of the fundamental phenomena and dimensions. In this article first surveyed the critical thinking from the view point of many experts and then with the emphasis on the benefits of critical thinking, presented a framework for its implementation in Iran educational system. Although the knowledge base on instructional leadership is quite well developed in Western societies empirical studies have only recently begun to emerge in the developing societies of Asia, Africa and Latin America. The current study was undertaken to fill a gap in leadership research in Iran, where there have been no prior studies of principal instructional leadership (PIL). The current study sought to understand the relationship between principal self-efficacy, instructional leadership, teacher collective efficacy and teacher organizational commitment in Iranian primary schools. Survey data collected from 111 principals and 345 teachers were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM). The results confirmed the proposed conceptual model affirming the impact of both principal and teacher beliefs (i.e. self-efficacy) on their behaviors and on teacher commitment. More specifically, the SEM results identified robust, positive and statistically significant relationships among the constructs. These findings extend prior research by revealing how leader self-efficacy beliefs and instructional leadership behaviors interact to shape collective teacher efficacy and commitment. This research makes a distinct contribution not only to school leadership research in Iran, but also to the growing body of research on the effects of PIL in non-Western, developing societies.

Despite several studies having been conducted to examine organizational image from a business perspective, there has not been adequate research in the area of perceived image in nonprofit organizations such as universities. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the factors contributing to university image, from the postgraduate students' point of view. In addition, the impact of the students' perceived university image on their organizational trust was examined. The population of this study consisted of postgraduate students in 10 of the top Iranian universities. Questionnaires were used to collect the required data. The findings indicated the difference between current practices and ideal values of the factors contributing to the university image. Based on our findings, the factors contributing to university image range from internal and international reputation, university members, and academic planning, to university environment. Furthermore, we found that university image has a significant impact on students' trust in their university.

While research is abundant on quality assurance in higher education, very little has been done to study informal learning in general and its relation to quality assurance in particular. Reporting on a study of informal learning among PhD students in natural sciences in an Iranian university, this article is an attempt to address this issue. Qualitative data from interviews and quantitative data from a questionnaire were used to investigate the extent to which a group of science PhD students resorted to informal learning strategies. The results suggest that far from a team-working culture one might expect to find among PhD students in the natural sciences, they often conceived of themselves as solitary researchers within the confines of their laboratories. It is argued that this is at least partly due to the reduction of the managerial role of PhD supervisors in the context under study. Given the significant role of informal learning among university students in general, and PhD students in particular, this should be incorporated into quality assurance procedures. The purpose of the current study was (a) to assess the effectiveness of the lexical-set (LS) and the semantically-unrelated (SU) vocabulary instruction, separately and relative to each other, and (b) to assess the differential effects of the two methods for students of lower and upper English proficiency levels. Two intact EFL classes were assigned randomly to the LS or the SU treatment. Each treatment group then received special instruction in vocabulary. The students' gains of target words were measured in terms of vocabulary breadth (VB) and vocabulary depth (VD) knowledge, using the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale (VKS). The study provided some initial evidence to suggest that although students in both instructional methods significantly gained in their knowledge of target words with regard to their VB and VD knowledge, both upper and lower level LS students reached a significantly higher level than their peer SU ones.
