There are numerous steel bridges worldwide, many of which are made from weathering steel. Trademarks of weathering steel, such as Corten (the United States), Atmofix (the Czech Republic), NAW‐TEN and CORSPACE (Japan), or Q345CNH (China) are commonly used. Inland steel bridges are impacted by chloride ions, primarily dispersed into the air by road traffic from de‐icing salt (NaCl) and brine solutions used in winter road maintenance, which can compromise the integrity of the bridges' load‐bearing structures. The quantity of deposited chlorides fluctuates based on the distance from the source, especially for inland bridges, where it is determined by the distance from the road. There is also a difference between the winter season and the rest of the year. The study presents in‐situ measurement data from two sites, analyzing the corrosion loss. Additionally, a regression analysis is conducted to understand the relationship between the distance from the road guide line and the corrosion loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Program of experimental atmospheric corrosion tests carried out on weathering steel bridges in the Czech Republic is briefly introduced in this paper. Attention is paid to the evaluation of corrosion processes on load-bearing structures of girder bridges with the roadway above the supports. The article presents selected results of experimental atmospheric corrosion testing aimed at the measurement of corrosion products thicknesses. It results from the tests that corrosion processes on weathering steels bridges are significantly conditioned by position and location of exposed surface within the structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The safety and durability of bridges designed from weathering steels are conditioned by the development of a sufficiently protective layer of corrosion products. Air pollution, microclimate around the bridge, time of wetness, structural solution of the bridge, and the position and orientation of the surface within the bridge structure all influence the development of protective layers on the surface of the weathering steel. In this article, attention is focused mainly on the microclimatic effects resulting from the road traffic under the bridge. The influence of chloride deposition on the development of corrosion products is evaluated using experimental in situ testing. Two neighboring bridges made of weathering steel and crossing different types of obstacles were selected for this experiment. Relations and dependences between the measured parameters (deposition rate of chlorides, corrosion rates, thickness of corrosion products and the amount of chlorides in corrosion products) are evaluated and discussed.
