The hot deformation behavior and dynamic softening mechanism of 7B50 aluminum alloy were studied via isothermal compression experiments in the range of 320–460 °C/0.001–1.0 s−1. According to the flow curves obtained from the experiments, the flow behavior of this alloy was analyzed, and the Zener–Hollomon (Z) parameter equation was established. The hot processing maps of this alloy were developed based on the dynamic material model, and the optimal hot working region was determined to be 410–460 °C/0.01–0.001 s−1. The electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) microstructure analysis of the deformed sample shows that the dynamic softening mechanism and microstructure evolution strongly depend on the Z parameter. Meanwhile, a correlation between the dynamic softening mechanism and the lnZ value was established. Dynamic recovery (DRV) was the only softening mechanism during isothermal compression with lnZ ≥ 20. Discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) becomes the dominant dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mechanism under deformation conditions of 15 < lnZ < 20. Meanwhile, the size and percentage of DDRXed grains increased with decreasing lnZ values. To better understand the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior of 35CrMo steel during hot deformation, a series of isothermal compression tests were carried out at different temperatures and strain rates. Using a constitutive equation built from the data obtained and the Arrhenius equation, the activation energy for hot deformation was determined through regression to be 342.69 kJ/mol. A model of the DRX kinetics was also constructed to characterize the influence of accumulated strain, temperature and strain rate on DRX evolution, which revealed that lower temperatures and higher strain rates require greater strain to achieve the same DRX volume fraction. Optical examination of the microstructure after deformation confirmed that this model accurately reflects reality and that grain size varies directly with deformation temperature, but inversely with strain rate. Heterogeneous bimodal microstructure and its formation mechanism of Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy during isothermal compression at 450 °C and 0.001 s−1 was investigated in detail. Based on microstructure analysis, Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloys with bimodal grain size distribution and bimodal texture distribution were obtained by uniaxial isothermal compression. There were more heavily bimodal levels in grain size and texture at true strain greater than 0.8. There was a significant inhomogeneous plastic deformation between and within the grains in Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy during the deformation, which is attributed to the difference the grain orientation and a large number of intergranular block-shaped LPSO phases. Further studies revealed that particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN) caused by a large intergranular LPSO phases and continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) developed layer by layer toward the grain interior were the main grain refinement mechanisms. This PSN and CDRX mechanism contributed to the fine grains in bimodal grain size distribution and the random texture in bimodal texture distribution. However, the original coarse grains with basal orientation were preserved during deformation due to smaller plastic deformation and energy storage. Meanwhile, grain boundary segregation and intragranular lamellar LPSO precipitate promoted CDRX by retarding DDRX. In addition, the grain boundary pinning effect dominated by grain boundary segregation and intragranular lamellar LPSO precipitate hindered the coarsening of fine DRXed grains, which was the ultimate guarantee for the formation of bimodal microstructure. Ultimately, inhomogeneous plastic deformation, DRX, and grain boundary pinning effect were demonstrated as the necessary conditions for the formation of heterogeneous bimodal microstructure during thermal deformation of Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy.
