The present paper has attempted to highlight published research in Library and Information Science discipline contributed by LIS researchers in India during the last four decades, 1980-2019. The secondary data for the study was extracted from Incites, a web based analytical tool, of Clarivate Analytics. The study has observed that there were 4304 publications by Indian authors, which received 17523 citations. It has spotlighted the research themes of the top 100 papers; having the highest numbers of citations. The study has analysed citations, publication avenues and authorship of all 4304 papers. Research themes of highly cited 100 research papers in the areas of applications of bibliometrics, knowledge management and information seeking behaviour on social media received 6110 citations. Bibliometrics/scientometrics/informetrics were the preferred research themes followed by information seeking behaviour and other areas. The study has also presented the analysis with respect to collaboration. The practice of solo research changed with authors collaborating in projects and producing papers. Percentage of co-authored articles grew from 5.61 per cent to 12.66 per cent in India. This research paper aims to explore the Methods used for Implementing Knowledge Management in the University Libraries of North. The methods outline the different methods of implementing KM in libraries and this paper seeks to know about the procedures to be followed for implementing KM, LIS professional's level of awareness about KM, benefits of implementation KM and the obstacles faced by LIS professionals during KM execution. A total of 280 LIS professionals working in 20 select state universities were approached for the collection of data. In order to obtain a large and representative sample of LIS professionals, stratified random sampling is being used. The study was delimited to the 20 Government state universities (having all disciplines) and listed on the University Grants Commission's website (Govt. of India) and comes under the northern region of India. The main libraries of the universities were covered in the study, whereas departmental libraries were excluded. It has been found that there was no significant difference regarding the awareness of KM between the Professional Assistants and the rest of the LIS professionals. It has been also noted that LIS professionals assumed that the major benefit of KM implementation that it helped to improve library services & operations. Furthermore, the major barriers to the implementation of KM are lack of training, lack of rewards / incentives for innovative performance, lack of human resources, lack of knowledge sharing culture, hesitation to adopt the change by LIS professionals and misunderstanding about the knowledge management on the part of the library staff to incorporate knowledge management practices. Vāda, the classical name for the act of discussion/debate in the Indian tradition, forms the basis of every conversation undertaken to reach correct knowledge. The paper explores the Indian tradition of Vāda and its subcategories with the intention of highlighting the allencompassing and holistic nature of this Indian tool of cultural studies in both theory and praxis. It checks into its evolution through contemporary times, wherein it has lost its essence to accommodate the corrupted interests of modern individuals as well as leaders and debaters. Through the analysis of various examples, the paper endeavours to establish Vāda as a comprehensive way to attain correct knowledge. Examples from day-to-day life as well as the historic-literary world help to explicitly comprehend these tools that have been used for establishing the nearest truth from ancient times in India. Purpose: This paper aims to examine the role of knowledge management (KM) processes in enhancing competitive strategies of differentiation and cost-effectiveness and its impact on innovativeness in knowledge-intensive service organizations (KISOs) in India. Design/methodology/approach: This study collected data from 293 employees working in Indian KISOs through a questionnaire survey. After checking for reliability and validity of data, this study tested the hypotheses by structural equation modeling using AMOS 26. Findings: The results show that KM processes have a significant and positive relationship with competitive strategy and innovativeness. Competitive strategy partially mediates the relationship between KM processes and innovativeness. These KM processes promote differentiation and cost-effectiveness, which in turn enhances innovativeness. A differentiation strategy has a stronger positive relationship with KM processes and innovativeness than a cost-effective strategy. Research limitations/implications: This study's cross-sectional design limits its ability to establish a general cause–effect relationship. Even so, theoretically, the results corroborate the contingent view of KM in emerging economies such as India. The findings show the mediating role of competitive strategy on the relationship between KM and its processes with innovation and competitiveness – providing a better cost-effectiveness relationship and organizational differentiation capacity. Practical implications: This study suggests managers to adopt KM processes such as creation-sharing, acquisition and knowledge base enabling firms to be different and cost-effective than their competitors. This study provides evidence on how KISOs can leverage their innovativeness by using KM processes in congruence with its competitive strategy and gain competitive advantage. Social implications: This study emphasizes the development of KM processes in the management of KISOs, which contributes substantially to India's economic growth via Gross domestic product and employment. On the social side, this study suggests to manage cultural issues in KM processes, arising because of presence of multi-cultural workforce and a high-power distance society. Originality/value: This study bridges a research gap of previous studies providing empirical evidence regarding the mediating effect of competitive strategies in the relationship between KM processes and innovativeness. This study adds proof to the KM contingency view of firms, suggesting when KM processes are formulated to achieve competitive strategy; substantial benefits such as innovativeness can be realized. The role that knowledge management systems (KMS) play in facilitating better decision-making and providing sustainable competitive advantages for organizations has been recognized worldwide. Academic sector has significant opportunities to apply KMS practices to supplement their mission and achieve their vision. The study investigates the concept of KMS in a higher education institution by adopting a hierarchical approach. Components of knowledge management (KM) such as awareness, existence, future, and benefits have been identified. The analytical hierarchical process method has been applied to prioritize the relative importance of three components out of these, that is, awareness, existing status, and future implications of KM to higher education. The paper is based upon a quantitative and qualitative study. The outcomes of the paper describe that there is awareness and existence of KM in higher education management institutions in an Indian perspective. Background Nurses play a dominant role in the healthcare sector. However, the working condition of nurses in India is far from satisfactory due to a variety of factors. This is further compounded by the lack of respect for nurses and their profession. Therefore, there is a need to examine factors that could mitigate this situation. Objective The objective of this paper is to examine the relationship between authentic leadership and employee creativity, while determining the mediating effect of knowledge sharing behaviour and moderating effect of use of information technology on this association. Design A questionnaire-based survey was used to collect the data. Macro process (Hayes) was used to examine the mediating role of knowledge sharing behaviour and the moderating role of use of information technology in the relationship between authentic leadership and employee creativity. Settings Data was collected from 43 small- and medium-sized hospitals in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Participants The participants in the present study were 405 nurses and their 81 supervisors from the above hospitals. Results Results indicate that authentic leadership is positively linked to the creativity of employees. Further, knowledge sharing behaviour is found to mediate the relationship between authentic leadership and employee creativity, while use of information technology acts as a moderator between knowledge sharing behaviour and employee creativity. The findings of this investigation can help healthcare managers understand the importance of knowledge creation and knowledge sharing among healthcare workers. This paper draws attention to the need for hospital administrators to establish an appropriate information technology infrastructure to effectively manage the knowledge pool of the organization. This study also highlights the importance of effective leadership style, namely authentic leadership, in positively influencing employee creativity in healthcare institutions, a service oriented industry. Conclusion This study contributes to existing research on authentic leadership and employee creativity by showing that knowledge sharing behaviour and use of information technology are important and relevant variables that affect the degree of influence that authentic leadership has on employee creativity. Purpose -- The purpose of the study is to identify the practices of knowledge management process in Indian higher educational institutions. Design/methodology/approach -- The study involved 225 research scholars and 225 faculties' members from nine higher educational institutions. The respondents were required to respond to a five-point Likert scale from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The collected data were then analyzed using the SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 software packages. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted followed by confirmatory factor analysis. Descriptive and statistical data analyses were also performed on various dimensions of knowledge management process practices. Findings -- The research paper extracted that more than 0.5% of the respondents were strongly agreed and agreed towards each and every items of the knowledge management process dimensions. On the basis of the mean ranks for knowledge management process dimensions, respondents gave first preference to 'knowledge storing and sharing', followed by 'knowledge acquisition and creation'. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are increasingly used for knowledge management (KM) currently. However the full potential of ICTs are yet to be realized due to several challenges. This paper explores the challenges in using ICT for KM using the case of Agropedia, an ICT mediated knowledge management platform for Indian agriculture. The paper argues that KM is no longer a technical challenge but is rather constrained by social and organizational barriers. Without initiating institutional and policy changes to address these barriers, ICTs cannot contribute significantly to KM. By March 2014, Agropedia had close to 8500 registered users and 33,062 published nodes solely dedicated to agriculture and 24 crop knowledge models. A total of 35 institutional Agropedias and a mother Agropedia were created for a better content management system. In conclusion, the deployment of ICT in agriculture is found to be a socio-technical process, facing social and organisational challenges. The aim of this research paper is to investigate the knowledge management strategies adopted by the libraries of central universities in India. Review of literature, reveals that codification and personalisation have been considered knowledge management strategies for sharing explicit and tacit knowledge within the library system. To determine the most used knowledge management strategies in libraries, 14 tools (seven each for codification and personalisation) were recognised from the literature review and taken for examination. A total of 116 library and information science professionals of 23 central universities spread across India were surveyed through a web-based questionnaire to explore the knowledge management strategies followed and data analyses were conducted by using SPSS version 22.0. The findings of the research show that both codification and personalisation have been used in libraries, though the balance of codification and personalisation was not in 80-20 ratio. Between codification and personalisation, codification was found to be the most useful strategy with collective mean difference, i.e., 0.312. This study has practical implications for those who are not fully aware of the prominence of knowledge management and how knowledge management strategies can be used to gain a competitive advantage. It has been well established in literature that small industry clusters (SICs) have an impressive record of innovation and knowledge transmission. This paper explores the possibilities in this regard in third-world clusters through an empirical study of three SICs in India. The paper first examines the essential reasons for the survival and growth of clusters temporally over centuries. Then, it critically assesses the factors that threaten the clusters at present-some of which, it appears, might actually be fatal for these clusters. And finally, the paper concludes that though an enhancement in capacity to innovate and transfuse knowledge would contribute to the sustenance of these clusters, this cannot happen unless decisive intervention occurs to preserve and sustain the fundamental strengths of these clusters. To cope and compete in this rapidly changing world, organisations need to access and apply new knowledge. While explicit knowledge is important, what is often critical is an organisation's ability to create access, share and apply the tacit or un-codified knowledge that exists among its members, its network and the wider innovation system of which it is a part. This paper explores the role of tacit knowledge in livestock sector innovation capacity though the case of Visakha Dairy, one of the most progressive producer-owned milk marketing companies in India. Analysis of two episodes in Visakha's evolution illustrates how it used tacit knowledge to innovate around challenges. The paper concludes that while tacit knowledge is a major resource that organisations rely on to cope with change, it does not follow that knowledge management approaches that centre on codifying this knowledge are the way forward. Instead, it suggest that better management of the learning processes, through which tacit knowledge is generated, would be a more useful contribution to innovation and innovation capacity – in other words, a shift from knowledge management to learning management. The purpose of this paper is to construct and validate a tool that measures the knowledge strategies in software organizations in India. The knowledge strategies discussed in this paper are based on the characteristics of organizational learning typology, which are classified as consolidators, transformers and co-inventors. This tool measures the extent to which the software organizations practice the consolidator strategy, transformer strategy, and co-inventor strategy. Data were collected from 39 software companies in India. The tool was tested for psychometric properties such as unidimensionality, validity, and reliability. These properties of the tool are at a very acceptable level in view of the confirmatory fit index (CFI), Bentler Bonett Coefficient, and Cronbach's alpha, which are above the recommended minimum values. Descriptive statistics were tested to quantify the extent to which knowledge strategies were being practiced across the software companies in India. ANOVA was performed to see the role of organization size and age in view of knowledge strategies. Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine librarians' perceptions of knowledge management, including its concept, potential applications, benefits and major challenges of its applications in Indian academic libraries. A structured questionnaire, containing both open and close-ended questions, was sent by postal mail to 30 librarians of academic libraries in India of which 15 questionnaires were returned. Respondents were asked to define knowledge management and answer questions on its potential applications, benefits and major challenges of implementation in academic libraries. Respondents were also allowed to specify their own views on the subject. The findings of the study show that the levels of understanding of KM concepts among librarians are varied and most of them view KM as the management of information resources, services and systems using technology or specific processes for the capture and use of explicit knowledge, rather sharing and using tacit knowledge. They have positive attitudes towards the applications of knowledge management into academic library practice, and not only because this can bring academic libraries closer to their parent organization, but also because it may help them to survive in an increasingly challenging environment. Although, librarians in the present study acknowledged that they are involved in the practices of knowledge management but these were perceived as basic information management activities. Lack of understanding of knowledge management concepts and its benefits, knowledge sharing culture, top management commitment, incentives and rewards, financial resources and information technology infrastructure are perceived as the major barriers for incorporating knowledge management into academic library practice. In a rapidly changing world evidenced by a transition from industrial to knowledge economy, India's progressing knowledge sector has attracted the attention of the entire globe. The future drivers of any economy will no longer be capital, land or equipment; but the people and their knowledge. Indian corporate sector, now, is in search of a new paradigm in accounting, which would enable it to record its new journey from financial capital to intellectual capital. With this background in mind, the study of 15 leading Indian Information Technology companies, considered to be highly knowledge intensive, is undertaken in order to find out the disclosure level of recording and reporting of intellectual capital by these companies. An effort has been made in this paper to identify the meaning and significance of intellectual capital and to evaluate the prevailing practices of recording and reporting of intellectual capital by the Information Technology sector in India by using the content analysis method. The results of the study demonstrate that intellectual capital reporting in the Indian Information Technology companies are almost negligible and it is evident that intellectual capital reporting has not received any preference or priority for the mentors of the Indian corporations. In recent times knowledge has been recognised as a major source of efficiency, competitiveness, and economic growth and the resulting 'Knowledge Society' is supposed to be more egalitarian. Whether this happens depends on the level of penetration of the 'Knowledge Economy' (KE), its linkage with other sectors, the nature of the jobs created, and whether different stratum of society benefit from it equally. This paper uses the Indian experience to shed light on these issues. While huge potential for transition to a Knowledge Society exists in India, it would have to be preceded and accompanied by enabling policies such as investment in scientific research, standardisation of working conditions, and the building up of physical and social infrastructure. Traditional Knowledge (TK) is a collectively owned property and is integral to the cultural or spiritual identity of the social group in which it operates and is preserved. Traditional Knowledge is now at the centre of the discussions on intellectual property rights and has assumed immense significance. The paper attempts to trace the legal protection that should be accorded to traditional knowledge in India. India does not have any specific legislation for protecting traditional knowledge. But the Patents Act, Plant Variety Protection and Farmers Rights Act, Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 have provisions that can be utilized for protecting traditional knowledge. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe the progress India has made in its move towards a knowledge-based economy with details of how the Indian Government has demonstrated its commitment to the development of fundamental pillars of knowledge sharing infrastructure, knowledge workers and a knowledge innovation system. Libraries are identified as key players in building an inclusive knowledge economy (KE) for a country. Design/methodology/approach - An empirical study of the initiatives taken by Government of India as well as premier institutions and non-governmental organisations in the area of information literacy, lifelong learning and knowledge repository development was undertaken. These are reviewed to report on the contribution each of them has made in the development of KE in India. Findings - The practice-based examples of how information and communication technology (ICT) projects are influencing contemporary Indian society and an account of government policies in regard to ICT implementation and development towards a KE are presented. The impediments in the process of KE in India are identified and recommendations are made. Originality/value - This is an attempt to bring together initiatives and projects initiated by the Government of India as well as other agencies aimed at developing a knowledge-based society which will ultimately lead to a KE in India. As India marches rapidly towards an ambitious agenda of economic and social advancement, one of the greatest challenges it faces is to provide extensive access to quality higher education opportunities. An evident and expanding Open Education Resources movement offers great promise for meeting this challenge through initiatives that make quality tools, content and practice widely available. Accordingly, India's National Knowledge Commission launched a process to explore and leverage these initiatives for adoption and adaptation, as well as to serve as a model for further indigenous efforts. This paper outlines issues and recommendations that address organisational considerations and infrastructure readiness as part of a systemic and sustainable strategy to make effective use of Open Educational Resources for scaling educational opportunity and excellence in the Indian context. Information technology has brought gains in productivity and market share in every field of industry. We are now living in the age of information. Mining operations are complex and they are composed by a group of physical, mechanical and logistical activities offering a vast field for development of automation and information technology. The opportunities exist for the Indian mining industry to undertake business process re-engineering through information technology (IT). The scenario presented in this paper is only an illustration of the possibilities that can be achieved through the implementation of information technology for the Indian mining industry. Information technology will drive continuing improvements in efficiency and reduction in the cost of coal extraction in India. Health and safety concerns will further encourage automation and technological developments among Indian coal mining companies to reduce labour costs and the cost of meeting increasingly stringent environmental requirements, and to improve productivity. Effective knowledge management is considered to play an increasingly important role in creating competitive advantage. Knowledge is becoming a driving force for organisational change and wealth creation. As a result, organisations are at varying stages of planning and implementing knowledge-based strategies in efforts to improve their competitiveness, productivity, organisational effectiveness and customer service. However, KM initiatives are both expensive and risky propositions. Financial resources put a ceiling on what can be expended on knowledge activities. There is a huge demand for skilled managers in the global economy, including India. This necessitates a re-look at knowledge management initiatives in business schools, which can be considered to be knowledge intensive organisations. This paper is a result of an exploratory study that tries to explain the factors influencing the success of knowledge management initiatives in a business school to distinguish itself in the academic market place. A generalised model has been constructed highlighting possible antecedents and consequences of a business school in its quest for becoming a learning organisation.
