Abstract

The integration of planning and scheduling decisions in rigorous mathematical models usually results in large scale problems. In order to tackle the problem complexity, decomposition techniques based on duality and information flows between a master and a set of subproblems are widely applied. In this sense, ontologies improve information sharing and communication in enterprises and can even represent holistic mathematical models facilitating the use of analytic tools and providing higher flexibility for model building. In this work, we exploit this ontologies’ capability to address the optimal integration of planning and scheduling using a Lagrangian decomposition approach. Scheduling/planning sub-problems are created for each facility/supply chain entity and their dual solution information is shared by means of the ontological framework. Two case studies based on a STN representation of supply chain planning and scheduling models are presented to emphasize the advantages and limitations of the proposed approach. Abstract

The supply chain (SC) can be defined as the group of interlinked entities which share resources and exchange materials, information and cash with the aim of delivering products and services to customers. Decisions are taken at different stages within the SC, at different levels in the management hierarchy and thus they differ in business scope, time horizon and resolution, data certainty and accuracy, process detail and optimization mechanism. This work identifies and describes the different dimensions found in the SC structure, and presents an ontological framework as a mechanism for exchanging information effectively as a knowledge model with multiple applications in the SC environment. SC's are distributed along different geographical locations, include the traditional hierarchical structure for decision-making (operational, tactical and strategic), and comprise several functions, such as production, marketing, sales, human resources, logistics, safety and environment, which interact with each other. As a result, decision-making becomes highly complex and challenging in the alignment of decisions to support the success of business goals. Hence, effective integration of these different dimensions (decision levels and business functionalities) by means of tools improving information sharing and communication may play a crucial role for the enhanced enterprise operation from a global perspective. In this sense, knowledge management technologies have proved to be highly promising for supporting this integration task. In this work, an ontological framework is developed as the technology for information and knowledge models sharing. The potential of the proposed general semantic framework is demonstrated using a case study concerning the enterprise SC network design-planning problem. The ontology is able to provide an enterprise decision-making supporting framework which can be used for combining different information systems, as well as adapting and recognizing the different elements associated with the enterprise functions, and facilitates assessing the environmental performance of enterprises. In this work, an ontological framework is developed as the technology for information and knowledge models sharing for the environmental assessment of the enterprise. The ontological model is applied to a case study considering a supply chain network design-planning and a process scheduling problem. The ontology provides an enterprise decision-making supporting tool by combining different information systems, which adapts and recognizes the different elements associated with the enterprise functions, and facilitates assessing the environmental performance of enterprises. Abstract

Enterprises are highly complex systems in which one or more organizations share a definite mission, goals and objectives to offer a productor service. Thus, enterprises comprise several functions which interact with each other, such as production, marketing, sales, human resources or logistics. As a result, decision-makingin the enterprise becomes a highly challenging task, and such decision process is usually separated in several levels. Nevertheless, such levels are closely related, since they share data and information. Therefore, effective integration among the different hierarchical levels, by means of tools improving information sharing and communication, may play a crucial role for the enhanced enterprise operation, and consequently for fulfilling the enterprise’s goals. In order to achieve integration among the different decision levels, it is necessary to establish a common modelling framework. In this work, an ontological framework is built as the mechanism for information and knowledge models sharing for multiple applications. The potential of the general semantic framework developed (model maintenance, usability and re-usability) is demonstrated in the enterprise supply chain network design-planning problem case study presented. Further work is under way to unveil the full potential to implement a large-scale semantic web approach to support business processes decisions.
