The fourth industrial revolution is increasingly implemented in most fields and categories of industry. The use of several highly developed technologies generates huge amounts of heterogeneous data and knowledge, hence the need to manage it in order to facilitate its reuse. This article proposes a global approach of knowledge management, from the analysis and development of the knowledge base structuring models, to the implementation phase using knowledge engineering tools. This research work is part of a global knowledge-based decision support framework that ensures several axes of decision support, this article deals with the diagnosis axis. It provides analysis and comprehension of the failures occurring during production. The approach has been implemented as a first demonstrator tested in a real case study: the aeronautical mechanical machining industry. The Industry 4.0 paradigm has seen increased interest by scientific research. The emergence of new information and communication technologies (ICT) in manufacturing shop floors generates large quantities of data and information flows, leading to large databases and big data issues. To resolve these issues, there is a need of efficient data and knowledge management approaches to support the exploitation, sharing, and interpretation of useful data. This article discusses the topic of ICT implementation within an Industry 4.0 paradigm. This article identifies problems of digital chain disruption and the need for interoperability. The historical restitution of demolished buildings requires the use of many sources of different nature, but no physical evidence of the element to be restored. In order to overcome this difficulty, this article intends to propose the use of virtual immersion of experts in the reconstructed space. This immersion makes it possible to evoke conscious or unconscious comments, in the sense of sensible response, of body postures, which are all additional sources that can guide or inform a process of historical reconstruction. We take as an example the theatres of the Foire Saint-Germain in Paris in the 18th century - for which important historical documentation exists, but no archaeological remains - with the aim of proposing a first draft of a methodology integrating the sensitivity of experts for a retro-architecture of these spaces. Along the product life-cycle, industrial processes generate massive digital assets containing precious information. Besides structured databases, written reports hold unstructured information hardly exploitable due to the lack of vocabulary and syntax standardization. In this paper we present a methodology and natural language processing approach to exploit these documents. Our method consists in providing connections based on supervised retrieval of domain-specific expressions. No prior document analysis are required to drive the algorithm. Recent visions for the factory of the future highlight the importance of integrating the pillars of Knowledge Management (KM) in the whole manufacturing divisions involved in the product lifecycle development. The increasing usage of ICT tools in the factory coming with the digital (PLM, ERP, MES, etc.) and smart (IoT, RFID, Wi-Fi, etc.) manufacturing paradigms contributes to this vision with the aim of supporting factory workers in conducting better production outcomes. However, this expansion results a data and information overflow making the handling of the access to the exact needed information more and more complex. This fact explains the need for a contextual access to the information and more generally to the knowledge set in the factory. This paper deals with the challenge of knowledge reuse and its adaptability to each activity context in the working environment. The scientific work focuses on the context idea as defined by the ubiquitous computing paradigm. The purpose of this approach consists of conceptual models design allowing knowledge structuration according to multiple completeness scales. The proposed approach allows the management of contextual information in a knowledge-based system. A prototype has been implemented to demonstrate the industrial feasibility and the contextual task assistance tool is called “Digital Factory Assistant”. Cultural heritage is often considered to be a social duty, rather than an economic opportunity. Enterprises do not consider their own heritage because studying and capitalizing ancient know-how is too complex. The main problem is that digitizing old objects required specific methodology with dedicated tools and competences. Consequently, museums are the core centre for conserving inert old objects. A scientific proposition is a framework coupled to a multi-business information system: the Digital Heritage Reference Model. This new PLM is based on a product-process approach adapted to manage historical knowledge for cultural heritage. A new modelling language has been defined to support spatio-temporal problematics and human beings. A use case will demonstrate our contribution. In this paper, we describe an interactive museum application dedicated to historical scale models. This comes from a joint work between multidisciplinary teams: industrial engineering researchers, historians, museum curators and interactive interface designers. We present here the result of the project, based on scientific methodology. Results include system architecture, hardware and software, some use cases and user evaluation figures. Nowadays, reverse engineering is widely spread in the manufacturing industry. The need of shorter development cycles has led to the identification of social and economic issues related to reverse engineering. The integration of a reverse engineering solution in a PLM context represents a good solution in order to shorten the development cycles, especially when it is automated. In this paper we present the issues identified in the context of METIS, a French national project aiming to provide a software solution for reconstructing large and complex mechanical assemblies and systems, through a global reverse engineering methodology combined with a knowledge management approach, and using heterogeneous data as inputs.
