Knowledge management and predictive analytics are considered to be unusual partners in today's technology. However, they can be very good tools that would solve current problems in valuing data. Predictive analytics has now become one of the forecasting tools that is of huge help in information management. Its application in IT project development risk management is very important, where a lot of raw data is involved with risk analysis and prediction. The use of IT project risk management as supported by knowledge management KM will help increase the success rate of IT projects. Knowledge management will bring about additional value to the data needed. This paper presents the usage of KM and predictive analytics to increase the success ratings of projects by predicting the risks that might happen during project development. It explores how KM and predictive analytics can identify risks in IT project development and give recommendations in evaluating the risks that could affect successful completion of IT projects. Electronic-commerce has become an important channel for conducting business. Researchers as well as market executives are trying to better understand online consumer behavior. One model used by researchers to understand behavior in the information systems field in general is the technology acceptance model (TAM). The TAM variables are perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and intentions. In this study, we suggest the extension of the TAM for its application in the E-commerce field. The original TAM will be extended, by adding four predictor variables. The four predictor variables are process satisfaction, outcome satisfaction, expectations, and E-commerce use. In addition, the TAM will be extended by measuring actual behavior as opposed to measuring intentions as a substitute for actual behavior in previous TAM application studies. We suggest measuring actual use variable in terms of four criterion variables, namely, purchase, access number, access total time, and access average time. The extended TAM is expected to better explain actual behavior in E-commerce environments than the original TAM.

Purpose – A paucity of research on the motivations and goals of vendors who develop electronic customer relationship management (eCRM) tools and systems exists in the literature. This is an important gap in the literature because many eCRM systems are products of outsourcing (to vendors). This paper aims to discuss these issues.Design/methodology/approach – This exploratory case study focuses on an international van‐based service franchise and the experiences of the vendor, company, and franchisees as they design, develop, and implement certain eCRM tools. Introduction In many ways, the Internet has changed the way we conduct our daily activities. Online shopping, social networking, and 'googling' for information are just a few examples of a new door that has been opened through the use of the Internet as the electronic portal to the world. For customers, easier availability of new products, access to more options, and the greatly expanded competitive landscape brought about by the Internet can all work together in a positive manner to provide greater choice, value, and pricing flexibility in many cases. For merchants, this same access to a world of new customers is of great potential benefit, but with it comes a world of new competitors. To survive and prosper in such a competitive environment, many marketers have recognized that, while vast opportunity may exist to attract new customers to their offerings, real value rests in keeping existing customers loyal to a brand. For many, the idea of "get there first and don't give them a reason to switch" is as true today as it was in the 1960s when more sophisticated models of marketing and brand management began to emerge. The idea that the value of existing customers is greater than that of new customers is not new since it is well understood and recognized that the cost of acquiring new customers far exceeds the cost of keeping existing ones (Berry, 1995; Crafton, 2002; Cuthbertson & Bridson, 2006; Gronoos, 1994; Gummesson, 1994; Kennedy, 2006; Li, Browne, & Wetherbe, 2007). Over the past decade or so, the idea of managing customer relationships has been a top priority for marketers worldwide. Customer relationship management (CRM), the idea of fine-tuning the ways in which firms interact with customers, has required energy, focus, and investment in new tools and software to aid in the development of CRM systems. With the advent of the Internet, this idea has been extended into a Web-based business model and relies on e-business technologies to interact with, communicate to, and collect information from customers. This new evolved model is aptly termed electronic customer relationship management (eCRM). While eCRM is considered by many to hold even greater promise for business due to its digital foundation that enables greater data mining potential, it has yet to consistently deliver on its promise of facilitating better understanding of customer behavior (Adamson, Jones, & Tapp, 2005; Bentum & Stone, 2005; Q. Chen & Chen, 2004; Fjermestad & Romano, 2003; Jang, Hu, & Bai, 2006; Li et al., 2007; Lin & Huang, 2007). The very nature of eCRM, with its many stakeholders, helps to illuminate the layers of complexity and their meaning with regard to what is intended by the idea of "informing" (Cohen, 2009). This complexity can be best understood by comparing eCRM to more "routine" informing systems which "tend to be driven by the skills of the designer" (Gill, 2009, p. 743). In contrast, the eCRM system central to this exploratory case study appears to be ever-changing as the interactions and needs of the varying stakeholder groups emerge. For example, "eCRM is too complex a concept to be comprehensively researched and efficiently classified merely by usual procedure and simple criteria" (Kevork & Vrechopoulos, 2009, p. 62). Yet, research in this area rarely considers the views of all stakeholders involved in the phenomenon thereby rendering the complexity of eCRM into a seemingly routine construct. To effectively bridge this research divide requires consideration for all players involved in the phenomenon. It is the intent to inform all players that guides this research. Therefore, we embarked on an exploratory case study focused on a van-based service franchise and motivated by the need to understand the perceptions and attitudes of all key stakeholders regarding the objectives of and motivations for implementing an eCRM program. The results of this study reveal important implications for the informing sciences including the need to balance human and computer interaction, issues related to control, the impact that "electronic" systems may have on marketing relationships, and the importance of balancing the interests and expectations of all stakeholders. …

This case study documents an organizational change intervention concerning the implementation of a novel information technology at a university-owned research foundation (URF). It evidences the disparate expectations and reactions by key actors toward the change event, marking a mismatch between a new paradigm required by the new technology and existing information technology practices. Drawing upon change management and management information systems (MIS) literature, we discuss the perceived change management issues hindering the change process at URF. Our discussion is tempered by a theoretical lens that attempts to integrate the literature bases drawn upon in this research. In particular, resistance from in-house IT specialists was observed as the strongest force obstructing the novel IT implementation. This study offers a forum to stimulate both researchers and practitioners to rethink the necessary elements required to enact change, especially with respect to novel IT implementations.

This study investigated the fit between contingency variables (e.g. task uncertainty and decentralization) in accounting information systems (AIS); a good fit is assumed to improve user satisfaction. We divided task uncertainty into two dimensions: variability and analyzability. We chose information scope, timeliness, and aggregation as the AIS characteristics to be studied within each dimension. User satisfaction was adopted as a surrogate to measure the performance of AIS. The responses of 126 managers were drawn from a cross-industry sample in Taiwan. Multiple regression models were employed to test the hypotheses. The results of the empirical test led us to two results: (1) broad-scope information (external environment or future-oriented information) promotes user satisfaction in high task variability situations, and (2) in a highly decentralized organization, broad-scope, timely, and aggregated information will also facilitate user satisfaction.

The failure of dot-coms is a staggering 75% in the first two years. Many of these failures were small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). One of the most commonly cited reasons for failure has been lack of a workable strategic business model to guide e-commerce (electronic commerce) efforts. We began this study because we wanted to explore if successful e-commerce SMEs use a guiding strategic process model, and if they do, ask them to articulate the model components. We chose a qualitative research method to obtain a rich description of the e-commerce process. The interview pool consisted of 15 interviews with established SME e-commerce entrepreneurs. From deep analysis of the data, a set of e-commerce process components and interrelationships between those components emerged from the data. We then synthesized (from the rich description) a model of the e-commerce process.

The objective of this research was to investigate the moderating effect of information technology (1T) infrastructure on the relationship between health care information management and quality performance within health care departments. The variables that were measured included both management and customer perceptions of quality, management of health care information (MOHCI), and IT infrastructure. This research focused on the determinants of departmental quality. The study conceptualized and developed measures for quality, MOHCI, and IT infrastructure variables. A significant relationship was observed between the management of health care information and quality performance. IT infrastructure exhibited a direct, rather than a moderating, effect on quality performance. The research also found/ that significant differences exist between customer and manager perceptions of quality.

Organizations are responding to global competition by changing the way they work. Many have adopted transformation approaches such as business process reengineering (BPR) in an attempt to transform inefficient work processes. However, many BPR projects have delivered less than stellar results. The purpose of this research is to explore reasons why transformation might succeed or fail by looking at one organization’s experiences with an enterprise-wide transformation effort. The organization is the Honeywell Industrial Automation and Control (IAC) unit located in Phoenix, AZ. The case research study provides an in-depth look at how IAC is dealing with enterprise transformation. Based on the transformation literature and the case, a framework is developed to guide future research.

This paper provides a longitudinal view of one organization’s experiences with IT implementation and Business Process Reengineering since 1990. The organization is EuroProducts; a manufacturer of air freshener and related products located in thecountry, in the West of England, EuroProducts has identified data integration and data standardization as critical to leverage increased performance from its materials requirements process flow. As a result, a new MRP system is being introduced to integrate data input from factory floor workers, management, staff, and IS professionals. The goal is to use the new MRP system as a rallying point to facilitate redesign of material requirements work flows. Aspects of innovation and systems theory are introduced to help the authors organize and identify root causes of the problems EuroProducts has had with its IT implementation and reengineering efforts.

Empowerment, creativity, and organizational memory are constructs that have been researched in MIS. While each construct has received individual attention, we have found relatively little research linking them. One of the major edicts of empowerment is delegation of decision making authority to lower-level employees. Increased authority allows employees more freedom to be creative. However, if creative thought is generated but not captured, innovative ideas may be lost. Organizational memory can capture creative ideas as they are generated so that empowered teams can draw upon positive creative experiences. We developed a theoretical model to illuminate the relationships between organizational memory, worker empowerment, and creativity. The model portrays the linkages between empowerment and creativity, creativity and organizational memory, and organizational memory and empowerment. The model was developed based on the literature in each respective area and an interview-based study concerning “empowered” systems development project teams and organizational memory. Analysis of the interview data revealed that empowered workers generate creative solutions to problems. However, creative solutions can only be used for future projects if they are somehow recorded into organizational memory. Organizations that empowered their workforce and embraced creativity reported increased customer satisfaction, waste reduction, and some quality gains. In contrast, those that did not empower reported little or no change. Organizations that recorded creative solutions to problems believe that retrieval of this information could be potentially useful for future projects. Potential challenges faced by organizations classified into each cell are also presented. This classification scheme should prove useful as a guide to organizations examining the potential benefits and pitfalls of worker empowerment and organizational memory.

The results of a field study investigating the impact of the extent of use, staff scheduling, and the adoption of quality control mechanisms (QCM) on end-user perceptions of information technology (IT) in a health care environment are presented. A multivariate model was developed and tested using multiple regression analysis on 47 hospital information system (HIS) end-users. Three specific hypotheses are proposed and tested. Data analyses indicate that end user perceptions depend on two factors: the end-user usage of IT, and the adoption of formal quality control mechanisms. Based on the research results, several suggestions are made to improve the likelihood of successful IT implementation in the health care industry.

Executive information systems represent a significant departure from traditional computer-based information systems. Advocates of executive systems claim that their systems offer the leading-edge option for making computers truly effective for supporting key management functions. This paper examines the interaction between key characteristics of executive systems and fundamental features of human thinking drawn from the field of Behavioral Decision Theory. We examine the possibility that the operation of these systems may reinforce or intensify certain biases in human information processing. We present three examples of potential bias-intensification: availability, regression effects, and overconfidence. Next, the paper applies the concept of decisional guidance to develop design implications for executive systems. Lastly, the paper offers avenues for theoretical development and empirical research.

This case study describes the implementation of a novel information system that facilitates automation of business processes. The novel system enables managers to design and develop their own processes into the system (with little or no help from technologists). As a result, information flow is greatly enhanced because managers understand the business and the associated processes. The CEO has a vision to transform the organization to more effectively track activities so that it can double in size within the next few years.

Building on a prior case and field study work, the author developed a process improvement model. The proposed model includes four interdependent components-a systematic methodology to guide quality efforts, an environment conducive to change, empowerment mechanisms for the people who do the work, and information technology (IT) to facilitate automation. The model was used to contrast the process improvement approaches between U.S. and Japanese companies. Results included differences between process improvement approaches, management/worker roles, creativity, change visions, and work environments.

Vicro Communications (we use a pseudonym to mask the identity of the organization) sought to reengineer its basic business processes with the aid of data-centric enterprise software. Vicro management however made the mistake of relying completely on the software to improve the performance of its business processes. It was hoped that the software would increase information sharing, process efficiency, standardization of IT platforms, and data mining/warehousing capabilities. Management however made no attempt to rethink existing processes before embarking on a very expensive implementation of the software. Moreover, management made no attempt to obtain feedback or opinions from employees familiar with existing business or legacy systems prior to investing the software. Unfortunately for Vicro, the reengineering effort failed miserably even after investing hundreds of millions of dollars in software implementation. As a result, performance was not improved and the software is currently being phased out.

This paper presents a comparative analysis of the survey results on communication competencies in mentoring in Lithuania and Latvia. In mentoring, it is imperative to examine barriers to communication competencies between business consultants (from now on referred to as "mentors") and start-up entrepreneurs or those intending to start a business (from now on referred to as "mentees") and propose solutions on how to enhance and maintain the business mentor network by utilizing communication technologies.

This research analyses information and communication technology as an effective tool and infrastructural basis for tertiary education development. The paper aimed to determine common roadmap of ICT implementation into national educational system taking into account variable factors of smart economics, global digitalisation and conditions of the international environment. Sufficient evidence of European countries’ willingness to ICT transformation is illustrated. A subsidiary objective of this research involves the building of a logical model outlining correlation between tertiary education and level of ICT access by the example of some European member states and Ukraine. Statistical data were based on variable indicators describing ICT infrastructure, education effectiveness and economics. The methodology of statistical methods and GAP-analysis was applied. This allowed revealing complex recommendations for the transformation of education into a smart education. The research highlights key considerations and important trends in the development of European education under the digitalisation.

Previous research have opposed secrecy and openness as mutually exclusive processes. In this paper, we suggest a more nuanced approach to secrecy in open innovation, drawing from Philosophy and Sociology. We have conducted a two-year research program in the defense industry, collecting data on the practices of concealment in open innovation activities. We found that focal actors utilize distinct cognitive techniques to decontextualize knowledge in the course of open innovation projects in order to safeguard secrecy while preserving mutual learning. Further, focal actors design contrasted relational approaches to secrecy with their open innovation partners. Such approaches are based on the positions of secrecy boundaries, which are internal or external to the relationship. In fact, actors intentionally make use of the reversible nature of secrecy, balancing inclusion and exclusion of knowledge in partnerships, to meet objectives that sometimes go beyond knowledge protection. Finally, we build on our findings to introduce a capability-based framework of secrecy management in openness processes. This framework, which we call Knowledge Discretion, suggests that actors overcome tensions stemming from secrecy and openness playing on the contextual depth and relational breadth of external knowledge sharing.

International audience; In many agri-food companies, food quality is often managed using expertise gained through experience. Overall quality enhancement may come from sharing collective expertise. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a complete methodology allowing an expert knowledge base to be created and used to recommend the technical action to take to maintain food quality. We present its functional specifications, defined in cooperation with several industrial partners and technical centres over the course of several projects carried out in recent years. We propose a systematic methodology for collecting the knowledge on a given food process, from the design of a questionnaire to the synthesis of the information from completed questionnaires using a mind map approach. We then propose an original core ontology for structuring knowledge as possible causal relationships between situations of interest. We describe how mind map files generated by mind map tools are automatically imported into a conceptual graph knowledge base, before being validated and finally automatically processed in a graph-based visual tool. A specific end-user interface has been designed to ensure that end-user experts in agri-food companies can use the tool in a convenient way. Finally, our approach is compared with current research.

This research explores the gap in the management of lessons learned (MLL) in an Information Technology project (IT), validating a model (named Target) with the support of a wiki platform in a medium-sized company in the IT industry. This model supports the following MLL processes: awareness, collection, verification, storage, dissemination and reuse. This study adopts the paradigm of the Design Science Research and the Technical Action Research method to instantiate the Target model in the implementation phase of an IT project. The theoretical contribution lies in the practical utility of an LL model, which was validated in the field promoting innovation in the MLL. The practical implications can be seen in the company's learning to introduce the MLL, improve design productivity, increase employee collaboration and better disseminate knowledge., Esta pesquisa explora a lacuna na gestão de lições aprendidas (GLA) em um projeto de Tecnologia da Informação (TI), validando um modelo (denominado Target) com o apoio de uma plataforma wiki em uma empresa de médio porte no setor de TI. Este modelo suporta os seguintes processos do GLA: conscientização, coleta, verificação, armazenamento, disseminação e reuso. Este estudo adota o paradigma Design Science Research e o Método de Pesquisa-ação Técnica para instanciar o modelo Target na fase de implementação de um projeto de TI. A contribuição teórica reside na utilidade prática de um modelo de GLA, que foi validado no campo promovendo inovação na GLA. As implicações práticas podem ser vistas no aprendizado da empresa para introduzir o GLA, melhorar a produtividade do projeto, aumentar a colaboração dos funcionários e disseminar melhor o conhecimento.

Whereas systems integration is recognized as an important organizational capability, the mechanisms through which it creates value as well as the environmental contingencies that delimit its effectiveness remain unclear, particularly when firms deliver integrated solutions embodying products and services. Focusing on IT solution providers, we investigate the effectiveness of systems integration with respect to three specific approaches to solution design: breadth, modularity, and customization. We find a complementarity effect between systems integration and solution design approaches: if firms pursue customization or rely on a broad set of heterogeneous knowledge bases, systems integration becomes fundamental. Conversely, if firms adopt a modular design, systems integration is redundant and even counterproductive. We also find evidence of complementarity between breadth and customization, but not between breadth and modularity nor between customization and modularity.

In this paper, we build on research on the microfoundations of strategy and learning processes to study the individual underpinnings of organizational learning. We argue that once an individual has accumulated a certain amount of experience with a task, the benefit of accumulating additional experience is inferior to the benefit of deliberately articulating and codifying the experience accumulated in the past. We explain the superior performance outcomes associated with such deliberate learning efforts using both a cognitive (improved task understanding) and an emotional (increased self-efficacy) mechanism. We study the proposed framework by means of a mixed-method experimental design that combines the reach and relevance of a field experiment with the precision of two laboratory experiments. Our results support the proposed theoretical framework and bear important implications from both a theoretical and practical viewpoint.
