Amatoxins are toxic compounds, not modified by current cooking or by freeze-drying, found in some mushrooms taken accidentally has edible products. In this study we used as lab animal the rat and the toxin was administrated by gavage. As control group were used two rats not exposed to any toxin. The test 1 group consisted in two rats exposed to a dose of 1 mg/kg of alfa-amanitin without previous treatment. The test II group consisted in two rats exposed to the same dose as the test I group but alfa-amanitin was previously submitted to a microwave radiation of 500 Watts during 90 seconds. All animals were observed during one week and then sacrificed by anesthetics overdose. The necropsies were performed in all animals and the liver submitted to histopathologic study. In the animals submitted to administration of the toxin there was evident degenerative liver changes and necrosis and the kidney had marked glomerular and peritubular congestion. In the animals submitted to the manipulated toxin the kidney and hepatic lesions were not so severe as those observed in the other intoxicated animals. Differences between test I and test II groups shows that toxin exposure to microwave radiation may have a significant role in modifying alfa-amanitin toxicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
