The objective of this study was to examine the effect of stage of lactation (early, mid, and late) and proportion of pasture in the cow's diet (high: GRS, medium: PMR, and no: TMR) on the composition and quality of Cheddar cheese. Triplicate trials were carried out in each stage of lactation, and milk protein and fat contents were standardized for Cheddar cheese manufacture at pilot scale. Because cheese milks were standardized for milk fat and protein contents, gross composition did not differ as a result of diet. Fatty acid profiles of GRS cheese were significantly different from TMR, while PMR profiles were less distinct and more similar to both GRS and TMR profiles, as illustrated by partial least squares discriminatory analysis. Fatty acids including CLA C18:2 cis-9,trans-11, C22:1 n-9, and C18:3 n-3 were most influential in this separation of profiles. Fatty acid profiling revealed that GRS-derived cheese contained higher proportions of nutrients considered beneficial for human health including higher proportions of unsaturated fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acids. A biomarker model utilizing the proportions of 5 fatty acids was constructed and was effective at distinguishing between cheese of GRS, TMR, and PMR feeding systems. Proportions of ρ-κ-CN, α s2 -CN and α s1 -CN in cheese also differed among diets while proportions of ρ-κ-CN, α s1 -CN, and β-CN were lowest in late lactation cheese. The effect of diet was less influential compared with that of stage of lactation on the ripening characteristics of cheese. An index of primary proteolysis was highest in late lactation cheese. The peptides derived from the proteolysis of κ-CN and β-CN and levels of secondary proteolysis, in particular, the proportions of 12 free AA were most influenced by stage of lactation. There is an increasing consumer desire for pasture-derived dairy products, as outdoor pasture-based feeding systems are perceived as a natural environment for animals. Despite this, the number of grazing animals globally has declined as a result of the higher milk yields achieved by indoor TMR feeding systems, in addition to the changing climatic conditions and lower grazing knowledge and infrastructure. This has led to the development of pasture-fed standards, stipulating the necessity of pasture and its minimum requirements as the primary feed source for products advertising such claims, with various requirements depending on the region for which it was produced. This work investigates the differences in the composition and techno-functional properties of butters produced from high, medium and no pasture allowance diets during early, mid, and late lactation. Butters were produced using milks collected from 3 feeding systems: outdoor pasture grazing (high pasture allowance); indoor TMR (no pasture allowance); and a partial mixed ration (medium pasture allowance) system, which involved outdoor pasture grazing during the day and indoor TMR feeding at night. Butters were manufactured during early, mid, and late lactation. Creams derived from TMR feeding systems exhibited the highest milk fat globule size. The fatty acid profiles of butters also differed significantly as a function of diet and could be readily discriminated by partial least squares analysis. The most important fatty acids in such an analysis, as indicated by their highest variable importance projection scores, were CLA C18:2 cis-9,trans-11 (rumenic acid), C16:1n-7 trans (trans-palmitoleic acid), C18:1 trans (elaidic acid), C18:3n-3 (α-linolenic acid), and C18:2n-6 (linoleic acid). Increasing pasture allowances resulted in reduced crystallization temperatures and hardness of butters and concurrently increasing the "yellow" color. Yellow color was strongly correlated with Raman peaks commonly associated with carotenoids. The milk fat globule size of cream decreased with advancing stage of lactation and churning time of cream was lowest in early lactation. Differences in the fatty acid and triglyceride contents of butter as a result of lactation and dietary effects demonstrated significant correlations with the hardness, rheological, melting, and crystallization profiles of the butters. This work highlighted the improved nutritional profile and functional properties of butter with increasing dietary pasture allowance, primarily as a result of increasing proportions of unsaturated fatty acids. Biomarkers of pasture feeding (response in milk proportionate to the pasture allowance) associated with the pasture-fed status of butters were also identified as a result of the significant changes in the fatty acid profile with increasing pasture allowance. The objective of this research was to evaluate how different feeding strategies based on various pasture availability (PA) treatments within intensive seasonal production systems affected pasture production and utilization, sward quality, and the milk production, body weight (BW), and body condition score (BCS) of dairy cows. The performance data were obtained from a 3-yr experiment conducted previously (2018-2020, inclusive). In total, records from 208 spring-calving dairy cows were available for analysis. The animals were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 PA grazing treatments in spring that varied in average pasture cover (measured as herbage mass available above 3.5 cm) that was established via different pasture management strategies in the previous autumn. Thus, the opening average pasture cover across all paddocks on February 1 was 1,100 kg of dry matter (DM)/ha for high pasture availability (HPA), 880 for medium pasture availability (MPA), and 650 for low pasture availability (LPA), respectively. The measurements were taken over an 8-wk period during the first grazing rotation in spring, commencing on February 16 (±2 d) and finishing when all paddocks were grazed once on April 12 (±5 d). Paddocks that were part of the HPA treatment showed the highest pregrazing herbage masses and pregrazing sward heights (1,645 kg of DM/ha and 8.2 cm, respectively) compared with MPA (1,412 kg of DM/ha and 7.5 cm, respectively) and LPA (1,170 kg of DM/ha and 6.9 cm, respectively). Owing to the differences in PA, daily herbage allowance was greatest for HPA (11.7 kg of DM/cow), intermediate for MPA (10.2 kg of DM/cow), and lowest for LPA (8.8 kg of DM/cow), with the remaining feed deficit composed of additional daily grass silage supplementation (0.8, 1.5, and 2.8 kg of DM/cow for HPA, MPA, and LPA, respectively), while the daily concentrate and daily total feed allowance were equal between treatments during spring (2.7 and 15.0 kg of DM/cow). Despite salient differences in fresh pasture used, complementing pasture intake with grass silage did not affect daily or cumulative milk, solids-corrected milk, fat, or protein yield or milk constituents. Similarly, BW and BCS were also unaffected by PA treatment. The results highlight the importance of high spring pasture utilization and grazing efficiency achievable with higher pregrazing herbage masses, which also allow larger animal intakes from grazed pasture as the cheapest feed source during spring. Moreover, targeting an adequate pasture supply at the commencement of calving increases the grazing days per hectare and lowers the requirement for supplementary feed on farm, particularly when facing increasing variability in climatic conditions., (The Authors. Grazing pasture is the basis for dairy production systems in regions with temperate climates, such as in Ireland, New Zealand, parts of Australia, the United States, and Europe. Milk and dairy products from cows on pasture-based farms predominantly consuming fresh grazed grass (typically classified as "grass-fed" milk) have been previously shown to possess a different nutrient profile, with potential nutritional benefits, compared with conventional milk derived from total mixed ration. Moreover, pasture-based production systems are considered more environmentally and animal welfare friendly by consumers. As such, there is significant potential for market capitalization on grass-fed dairy products. As competition in this space increases, the regulations of what constitutes as grass-fed vary between different regions of the world. With this in mind, there is a need for clear and independently accredited grass-fed standards, defining the grass-fed criteria for labeling of products as such, subsequently increasing the clarity and confidence for the consumer. This review outlines the numerous effects of pasture production systems on dairy product composition, nutritional profile, and sustainability, and highlights potential future methods for authentication., (The Authors. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of altering autumn pasture availability and farm system intensity on the productivity of spring-calving dairy cows during autumn. A total of 144 Holstein-Friesian and Holstein-Friesian × Jersey crossbred dairy cows were randomly assigned to 2 whole farm system (FS) intensities and 3 autumn pasture availability (PA; measured above 3.5 cm) treatments in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement. The 2 farm systems consisted of a medium intensity (MI: 2.75 cows/ha, target postgrazing sward height of 4.0-4.5 cm) and high intensity system (HI: 3.25 cows/ha, target postgrazing sward height of 3.5-4.0 cm, + 1.8 kg of concentrate dry matter [(DM)/cow per day]. Within each farm system treatment, cows were further subdivided into 3 different PA management strategies: high PA (HPA), medium PA (MPA), and low PA (LPA). The experimental period lasted for 11 wk from September 1 to housing of all animals on November 20 (±2 d) over 3 yr (2017-2019, inclusive). To establish the different average pasture covers for each PA treatment during autumn and in particular at the end of the grazing season, grazing rotation length was extended by +13 and +7 d for HPA and MPA, respectively, beyond that required by LPA (37 d). There were no significant FS × PA interactions for any of the pasture, dry matter intake, or milk production and composition variables analyzed. There were also no differences in pregrazing sward characteristics or sward nutritive value between FS with the exception of daily herbage allowance, which was reduced for HI system (12.2 vs. 14.2 kg of DM/cow). Milk and milk solid yield were greater for HI groups (15.9 and 1.55 kg/cow per day, respectively) compared with MI (15.4 and 1.50 kg/cow per day, respectively). Mean paddock pregrazing herbage mass was significantly higher with increased PA ranging from a mean of 1,297 kg of DM/ha for LPA to 1,718 and 2,111 kg of DM/ha of available pasture for MPA and HPA, respectively. Despite large differences in pregrazing herbage mass, there was no difference in cumulative pasture production and only modest differences in grazing efficiency and sward nutritive value between PA treatments. On average, closing pasture covers were 420, 650, and 870 kg of DM/ha for LPA, MPA, and HPA, respectively, on December 1. In addition to maintaining similar grazing season lengths and achieving big differences in availability of pasture on farm into late autumn, PA treatment had no significant effect on dry matter intake, milk production, and body condition score during the study period. The results of this study indicate that greater cow performance and pasture utilization can be achieved through a greater daily concentrate allocation along with an increased stocking rate. Moreover, the potential to adapt grazing management practices to increase the average autumn pasture cover in intensive grazing systems is highlighted. In addition, a high dependence on high-quality grazed pasture during late autumn can be ensured without compromising grazing season length while also allowing additional pasture to be available for the subsequent spring., (The Authors. High levels of milk production coupled with low feed intake cause negative energy balance in early lactation, especially in the first month postpartum (PP). Therefore, specific nutritional management at this time may improve nutritional and metabolic status with the possibility of contrasting genotypes responding differently. Thus, the objective of this study was to compare the effects of nutritional management strategies and dairy cow genotype on milk production, metabolic status, and some fertility parameters during early lactation in a pasture-based system. Sixty Holstein Friesian cows were blocked on parity and genotype [low-fertility high-milk (LFHM) and high-fertility low-milk (HFLM)] and were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, in a randomized complete block design based on calving date, previous 305-d milk yield, and precalving body condition score (BCS). The nutritional management treatments were: (1) ad libitum access to fresh pasture plus an allowance of 3 kg of concentrates per day (CTR, n = 30); and (2) ab libitum access to a tailored total mixed ration (TMR, n = 30). These diets were offered for the first 30 d PP. Following the first 30 d PP, cows fed TMR joined the CTR treatment and were managed similarly until 100 d PP. Blood samples were taken at d 7, 14, 21, and 28 PP to determine metabolic status. Milk samples for composition analysis were collected weekly and BCS assessed every 2 wk. Genotype had a significant effect on milk output, whereas LFHM had increased fat (+0.28 kg/d) and fat-plus-protein (+0.17 kg/d) yield in the first 30 d PP compared with HFLM cows. The LFHM group also exhibited higher protein and lactose yields over the first 100 d PP. Nutritional management did create significant differences in milk composition in the first 30 d: TMR cows had lower protein, milk urea nitrogen, and casein concentration and higher lactose concentration than CTR cows. Over the first 100 d PP, TMR cows had higher fat-plus-protein and lactose yields. Feeding TMR reduced concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (-0.12 mmol/L) and β-hydroxybutyric acid (-0.10 mmol/L) compared with the CTR group. Cows fed TMR had smaller BCS losses from calving to 60 d PP. There was no effect of any treatment on uterine recovery. Cows in the LFHM group demonstrated greater milk production in the first 30 and 100 d in milk. These results demonstrate that feeding cows a TMR for the first month of lactation has positive effects on milk output, metabolic status, and BCS profile., (The Authors. Zero-grazing (ZG; the mechanical harvesting and feeding of fresh grass) is increasingly used in grass-based milk production systems alongside conventional grazing. It allows farmers to supply fresh grass from land parcels that are outside of the main grazing block during seasonal shortages and periods when climatic conditions limit animal grazing opportunities. The objective of this study was to establish an understanding of current ZG practices on Irish dairy farms, to capture farmer perceptions on the implementation of this management practice, and to identify farmer knowledge requirements on ZG. An online survey was distributed and completed by 130 dairy farmers who use or have used ZG. Zero-grazing was used alongside conventional grazing by 92% of respondents. These farms were particularly fragmented, with between 1 and 14 separate land blocks. Respondents felt ZG helped them overcome fragmentation, increase grass use, and extend grass feeding in spring and autumn. However, extra cost and time input associated with ZG were recognized as key challenges. The majority of respondents rated current technical information available on ZG in the Republic of Ireland as "poor" or "very poor," and knowledge deficits were identified in the areas of cost analysis, grass management and productivity, cow productivity, cow health and nutrition, and soil fertility., (The Authors. This research communication addressed the hypothesis that late lactation cows offered an oat-grain-based supplement or a high level of α-TOC supplementation at pasture would have improved milk composition and processability. Over a grazing period of 49 d, 48 Holstein Friesian dairy cows were randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments. The dietary treatments were: control, pasture only (CTRL), pasture + 2.65 kg DM barley-based concentrate + 350 IU α-TOC/kg (BARLO), pasture + 2.65 kg DM oat-based concentrate + 350 IU α-TOC/kg (OATLO) and pasture + 2.65 kg DM oat-based concentrate + 1050 IU α-TOC/kg (OATHI). Within this randomised complete block design experiment cows were blocked on days in milk (DIM) and balanced for parity, milk yield and composition. Rennet coagulation time (RCT) was reduced in milk from cows offered OATHI compared to CTRL cows and OATLO. Concentration of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) was increased by OATHI compared to OATLO and in OATLO compared to CTRL. Supplementation with OATHI reduced individual saturated fatty acids (SFAs) in milk compared to OATLO. In conclusion, supplementing grazing dairy cows with an oat-based supplement improved total milk CLA concentration compared to pasture only. Offering a high level of α-TOC (2931 IU/d) to dairy cows reduced RCT, individual SFA and increased total CLA concentration of milk compared to a lower α-TOC level (738 IU α-TOC/d).

The objective of this study was to validate the effect of genetic improvement using the Irish genetic merit index, the Economic Breeding Index (EBI), on total lactation performance and lactation profiles for milk yield, milk solids yield (fat plus protein; kg), and milk fat, protein, and lactose content within 3 pasture-based feeding treatments (FT) and to investigate whether an interaction exists between genetic group (GG) of Holstein-Friesian and pasture-based FT. The 2 GG were (1) extremely high EBI representative of the top 5% nationally (referred to as the elite group) and (2) representative of the national average EBI (referred to as the NA group). Cows from each GG were randomly allocated each year to 1 of 3 pasture-based FT: control, lower grass allowance, and high concentrate. The effects of GG, FT, year, parity, and the interaction between GG and FT adjusted for calving day of year on milk and milk solids (fat plus protein; kg) production across lactation were studied using mixed models. Cow was nested within GG to account for repeated cow records across years. The overall and stage of lactation-specific responses to concentrate supplementation (high concentrate vs. control) and reduced pasture allowance (lower grass allowance vs. control) were tested. Profiles of daily milk yield, milk solids yield, and milk fat, protein, and lactose content for each week of lactation for the elite and NA groups within each FT and for each parity group within the elite and NA groups were generated. Phenotypic performance was regressed against individual cow genetic potential based on predicted transmitting ability. The NA cows produced the highest milk yield. Milk fat and protein content was higher for the elite group and consequently yield of solids-corrected milk was similar, whereas yield of milk solids tended to be higher for the elite group compared with the NA group. Milk lactose content did not differ between GG. Responses to concentrate supplementation or reduced pasture allowance did not differ between GG. Milk production profiles illustrated that elite cows maintained higher production but with lower persistency than NA cows. Regression of phenotypic performance against predicted transmitting ability illustrated that performance was broadly in line with expectation. The results illustrate that the superiority of high-EBI cattle is consistent across diverse pasture-based FT. The results also highlight the success of the EBI to deliver production performance in line with the national breeding objective: lower milk volume with higher fat and protein content., (The Authors. The objective of the experiment was to quantify the effect of stocking rate (SR) and animal genotype on milk production, dry matter intake (DMI), energy balance, and production efficiency across 2 consecutive grazing seasons (2014 and 2015). A total of 753 records from 177 dairy cows were available for analysis: 68 Holstein-Friesian and 71 Jersey × Holstein-Friesian (JxHF) cows each year of the experiment under a pasture-based seasonal production system. Animals within each breed group were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 whole-farm SR treatments defined in terms of body weight per hectare (kg of body weight/ha): low (1,200 kg of body weight/ha), medium (1,400 kg of body weight/ha), and high (1,600 kg of body weight/ha), and animals remained in the same SR treatments for the duration of the experiment. Individual animal DMI was estimated 3 times per year at grass using the n-alkane technique: March (spring), June (summer), and September (autumn), corresponding to 45, 111, and 209 d in milk, respectively. The effects of SR, animal genotype, season, and their interactions were analyzed using mixed models. Milk production, body weight, and production efficiency per cow decreased significantly as SR increased due to reduced herbage availability per cow and increased grazing severity. As a percentage of body weight, JxHF cows had higher feed conversion efficiency, higher DMI and milk solids (i.e., kg of fat + kg of protein) production, and also required less energy intake to produce 1 kg of milk solids. The increased production efficiency of JxHF cows at a similar body weight per hectare in the current analysis suggests that factors other than individual cow body weight contribute to the improved efficiency within intensive grazing systems. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of replacing barley and soybean meal with increasing levels of by-products on production, digestive, and metabolic parameters in early-mid lactation dairy cows offered perennial ryegrass-based pasture. Forty-eight (32 multiparous and 16 primiparous) dairy cows that were 64 ± 24 d in milk were assigned to 1 of 4 pasture-based dietary treatments (n = 12) in a randomized block design experiment that ran for 70 d. Treatments consisted of a perennial ryegrass-based pasture and 1 of 4 supplementary concentrates: BP35, BP55, BP75, and BP95 containing 35, 55, 75, and 95% by-products, respectively, in the concentrate on a dry matter basis. The by-products used were soyhulls, dried distillers grains, and palm kernel extract in equal proportions. Barley and soybean meal were replaced as by-product inclusion level increased. In this study, intakes of pasture dry matter (15.7 kg) and total dry matter (21.1 kg) were not affected by treatment. Similarly, milk production parameters (milk yield, milk composition, somatic cell count, and urea) were not different between treatments. Unsaturated fatty acids were lower in the milk of cows offered BP35 and BP55 compared with those offered BP75 and BP95. Concentrations of β-hydroxybutyrate, nonesterified fatty acids, and other blood metabolites were within normal range and did not differ between treatments, and cow body condition score and body weight were also not different. Equally, N was unaffected by diet. Blood urea N was lower in the BP75 group compared with BP35. This study demonstrated that barley and soybean meal can be replaced with soyhulls, dried distillers grains, and palm kernel extract without affecting milk production, digestive, or metabolic parameters in dairy cows offered a pasture-based diet., (Copyright © 2017 American Dairy Science Association. The productivity of grazing systems is primarily limited by the scale and efficiency of systems applied to the grazable land platform adjacent to the milking parlor. The objective of this study was to compare forage production, utilization and quality, milk production, and requirement for supplementary feeds for 2 different grazing platform stocking rate (GPSR) treatments over 4 yr. Animals were randomly allocated to 1 of 2 GPSR treatments: high-closed (HC; 3.1 cows/ha) and high-open (HO; 4.5 cows/ha), which were designed to represent alternative GPSR in a post-European Union milk quota, spring calving, pasture-based milk production system. Animal production data were analyzed using Proc MIXED of SAS with GPSR, year, and parity included as fixed effects in the final model. Within a seasonal spring calving grazing system, at high GPSR and offering moderate amounts of additional supplements based on pasture supply deficits, both systems produced more milk and fat plus protein per hectare in comparison with Irish commercial dairy farms. Although requiring additional supplementation, increased GPSR resulted in increased milk production per hectare but also in an increased requirement for concentrate and forage supplementation during lactation. No significant influence of GPSR was found on body weight and body condition score or reproductive performance during the 4-yr study period. In addition, GPSR also had no effect on pasture production, utilization, or quality during the study period. The primary objective of the study was to quantify the effect of stocking rate (SR) and calving date (CD) on milk production, dry matter intake (DMI), energy balance (EB), and milk production efficiency over 4 consecutive years (2009 to 2012). Two groups of Holstein-Friesian dairy cows with different mean CD were established from within the existing research herd at Moorepark (Teagasc, Ireland). Animals were assigned to either an early calving (mean CD February 14) treatment or a late calving (mean CD March 2) treatment. Animals within each CD treatment were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 whole-farm SR treatments: low (LSR; 2.51 cows/ha), medium (MSR; 2.92 cows/ha), and high (HSR; 3.28 cows/ha), and animals remained on the same farmlet for the duration of the study. Individual animal DMI was estimated 3 times per year at grass using the n-alkane technique in March (spring), May (summer), and September (autumn), corresponding to, on average, 45, 132, and 258 d in milk, respectively. A total of 138 spring-calving dairy cows were used during each year of the study. The effects of SR, CD, season, and their interaction were studied using mixed models. Individual animal milk production, body weight, body condition score, and the efficiency of milk production were significantly decreased as SR increased due to a reduction in herbage availability. The existence of CD × SR × season interactions for production, DMI, and EB indicate that delaying the herd mean CD can be an effective strategy to minimize the reduction in animal performance, particularly in spring at higher SR. This study further confirms the benefits of a new approach to the evaluation of herbage allowance known as the individual herbage allowance, which encompasses the 3 main factors restricting DMI in rotational grazing; namely, the average daily herbage allowance of the group, the intake capacity of the individual animal within the group, and the relative intake capacity of the animal within the competing herd., (Copyright © 2014 American Dairy Science Association. Dietary change, an inconsistent nutrient intake and high levels of milk production make the early post-partum period (PP) a challenging time for the lactating dairy cow. This experiment investigates the effects of two early PP nutritional management strategies (NM): abrupt introduction to pasture (AP) or a total mixed ration (TMR) for 21 days followed by a gradual introduction to pasture over 7 days (GP), with (Y) or without (C) live yeast (YS) on milk production, energy balance (EB) and selected metabolic and reproductive variables. Forty multiparous dairy cows were assigned to one of four dietary treatments in a two (AP vs. GP) by two (Y vs. C) factorial, randomized block design. The experiment was conducted from days 1 to 70 PP. Blood samples were taken on day 1, day 5 and every 10 days until day 45 to determine metabolites, whilst intake (DMI), and EB were determined during week 6 PP. Milk was sampled weekly for fat, protein and lactose. Trans-rectal scanning for reproductive variables commenced on day 10 PP. Animals in the GP group had a higher DMI (p = 0.04), higher fat yield (p = 0.08) and fewer days to first ovulation (p = 0.09) vs. those in the AP group. EB (-3.5 ± 0.67 units of energy for milk production) and body condition score loss (0.70 ± 0.09) were not affected by NM. However, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) (p < 0.01) were higher, and glucose (p = 0.02) was lower in the AP vs. the GP group. Supplementary YS tended to improve EB (p = 0.09) and reduced NEFA (p < 0.01) vs. non-supplemented animals. These data suggest that offering animals a nutritionally balanced TMR during the first 3 weeks PP followed by a gradual introduction to pasture can improve DMI vs. pasture-based diets. The objective of the study was to quantify the effect of genetic improvement using the Irish total merit index, the Economic Breeding Index (EBI), on overall performance and lactation profiles for milk, milk solids, body weight (BW), and body condition score (BCS) within 2 pasture-based systems of milk production likely to be used in the future, following abolition of the European Union's milk quota system. Three genotypes of Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle were established from within the Moorepark dairy research herd: LowNA, indicative of animals with North American origin and average or lower genetic merit at the time of the study; HighNA, North American Holstein-Friesians of high genetic merit; and HighNZ, New Zealand Holstein-Friesians of high genetic merit. Animals from within each genotype were randomly allocated to 1 of 2 possible pasture-based feeding systems (FS): 1) The Moorepark pasture (MP) system (2.64 cows/ha and 344 kg of concentrate supplement per cow per lactation) and 2) a high output per hectare (HC) system (2.85 cows/ha and 1,056 kg of concentrate supplement per cow per lactation). Pasture was allocated to achieve similar postgrazing residual sward heights for both treatments. A total of 126, 128, and 140 spring-calving dairy cows were used during the years 2006, 2007, and 2008, respectively. Each group had an individual farmlet of 17 paddocks and all groups were managed similarly throughout the study. The effects of genotype, FS, and the interaction between genotype and FS on milk production, BW, and BCS across lactation were studied using mixed models with factorial arrangements of genotype and FS accounting for the repeated cow records across years. No significant genotype by FS interaction was observed for any of the variables measured. Results show that milk solids production of the national average dairy cow can be increased across lactation through increased EBI. High EBI genotypes (HighNA and HighNZ) produced more milk solids per cow and per hectare than the LowNA genotype (2.7 and 4.1%, respectively). The results also suggest that when concentrate supplementation is used to facilitate increased stocking rates, increased herbage utilization and decreased substitution of concentrate for herbage can be achieved. When implemented, the HC FS could increase the overall productivity of pasture-fed dairy farming systems where land availability is the primary limiting factor of production., (Copyright (c) 2010 American Dairy Science Association. The key objectives of this study were to investigate differences in milking characteristics and udder health between Holstein-Friesian (HF), Jersey (J), and Jersey x Holstein-Friesian (F(1)) cows and to determine possible associations between milking characteristics and udder health. Records were available from 329 lactations (162 cows): 65 HF, 48J, and 49F(1). Data included lactation mean milk yield, somatic cell score (SCS), incidence of mastitis, average milk flow (AMF), peak milk flow (PMF), and milking duration (MD). Breed group had a significant effect on milk yield and was higher with the HF cows (18.0 kg/d) compared with the J cows (14.2 kg/d). Udder health (SCS and incidence of mastitis at least once during lactation) were similar across the breed groups. Average milk flow was greater with the HF cows (1.36 kg/min) compared with the J cows (1.09 kg/min). Peak milk flow also tended to greater with the HF cows. No difference in MD was observed between the breed groups. The performance of the F(1) cows tended to be similar to the mid-parent (breed) mean for udder health and MD, but heterosis was evident for milk yield, AMF, and PMF. Correlations examined showed that phenotypic milk yield was negatively associated with SCS. Increased milk yield was synonymous with increased AMF, PMF, and MD. Correlations between SCS and milking characteristics were weak. Correlations also showed that cows with low AMF and PMF had extended MD. Therefore, no difference in udder health was observed between HF, J, or F(1) cows. The fact that higher yielding animals exhibit faster milking speeds was confirmed; however, no difference in MD was observed between the breed groups. The objectives of this study were to investigate differences in grazing behavior among Holstein-Friesian (HF), Jersey (JE), and Jersey x Holstein-Friesian (F(1)) cows under an intensive, seasonal, grass-based environment and to determine whether associations exist among grazing behavior, intake capacity, and production efficiency. Data from a total of 108 animals (37 HF, 34 JE, and 37F(1)) were available for analysis. Measurements included milk production, body weight (BW), intake, and grazing behavior. Breed group had a significant effect on all of the production, grass dry matter intake, and efficiency parameters investigated. No differences were observed among the breeds for grazing time, number of grazing bouts, grazing bout duration, and total number of bites. Grazing mastications were higher for the JE cows compared with the HF cows. Grass dry matter intake per bite and rate of intake per minute were higher for the HF cows compared with the JE cows. Large differences between the breeds were apparent when grazing behavior measurements were expressed per unit of BW and per unit of intake. In absolute terms, the HF cows spent more time ruminating and had more mastications during rumination than the JE cows. However, when expressed per unit of BW, ruminating time was greater for the JE cows and they tended to have more ruminating mastications compared with the HF cows. Despite these differences, ruminating time and ruminating mastications per unit of intake were similar for the 2 breeds. For the most part, the F(1) cows tended to be similar to the mid-parent mean, but results showed an increase in biting rate, lower grazing duration per bout, and a tendency to achieve a high intake per bite compared with the average of the parent breeds. The results obtained also indicate that inherent grazing and ruminating differences exist between cows varying in intake capacity and production efficiency. Cows with higher intake capacities have increased grazing time and rate of intake per unit of BW. Increased production efficiency, on the other hand, appears to be aided, in particular by improvements in mastication behavior during grazing., (Copyright 2010 American Dairy Science Association. The objectives of this study were 1) to investigate production and energetic efficiencies among lactating dairy Holstein-Friesian (HF), Jersey (J), and Jersey x Holstein-Friesian (F(1)) cows over a total lactation at pasture and 2) to measure the associations among efficiency variables and performance traits. Data from 110 cows were available (37 HF, 36 J, and 37 F(1)). Breed groups were not balanced for parity; 16 HF, 10 J, and 9 F(1) were in parity 1, whereas the remainder were in parity 2. Milk production, body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), and estimates of dry matter intake (DMI) corresponding to 51, 108, 149, 198, and 233 d in milk were available. Breed group had a significant effect on all the production parameters investigated: milk yield, solids-corrected milk (SCM), milk fat, protein and lactose concentrations, and milk solids (MLKS; fat + protein yield). Daily MLKS yield was similar for HF and J (1.33 and 1.28 kg/d, respectively). There was a tendency for F(1) (1.41 kg/d) to produce more MLKS compared with HF. The HF breed had higher BW throughout the study compared with F(1) and J. Mean BCS was higher for F(1) (3.00) and J (2.93) compared with HF (2.76). Mean DMI was similar with HF (16.9 kg) and F(1) (16.2 kg) and was lowest with J (14.7 kg). Breed group had a significant effect on all the efficiency parameters investigated: total DMI per 100 kg of BW, SCM per 100 kg of BW, MLKS per 100 kg of BW, and MLKS per total DMI, which tended to be highest for J. Production efficiency based on net energy intake per MLKS was most favorable for F(1) and J compared with HF [12.5, 13.0, and 14.1 UFL, respectively, where 1 UFL is defined as the net energy content of 1 kg of standard barley for milk production (O'Mara, 2000)]. Significant estimates of hybrid vigor were evidenced for milk yield, milk lactose content, SCM, MLKS, net energy for lactation, BW, BCS, and net energy intake per MLKS. The correlations examined indicated that production efficiency was positively associated with MLKS yield.
