This article presents a bibliography of Larry Smith's publications over a period of thirty‐four years from 1971 until 2015 (shortly after Larry's passing). The bibliography attests to Larry's creativity and originality, which helped shape the scope and range of so much of the world Englishes (WE) activities, including its openness and sensitivity to cross‐cultural communication, and deeply‐felt respect for multicultural and multilingual diversity. This article discusses the contribution of Professor Larry E. Smith to the field of world Englishes (WE), a linguistic and educational enterprise in which Professor Smith was a founding figure. The article traces the development of Smith's thinking on world Englishes from early attempts to theorize English as an 'international auxiliary language' (EIAL), to a full theorization of world Englishes as a dynamic new field of study in the 1980s and 1990s. This discussion of Larry Smith's work also acknowledges his contribution to such other related areas of study as intercultural communication, and intelligibility studies, as well as his enduring contribution to the World Englishes journal, and the International Association for World Englishes (IAWE). Abstract: This article starts with an overview of the broad field of studies concerned with world Englishes (WE), before moving on to a discussion of current debates on world Englishes, and the central issue of world Englishes and Second Language Acquisition. The later sections of this article then consider various ways of bridging the gap between the fields of world Englishes and Second Language Acquisition, highlighting the importance of a multilingual perspective in this context. This paper compares trends in Sweden's language planning and language policies, and particularly the rationale underlying recent government legislation, to actual language use at the 'grass roots' of society, in order to investigate the extent to which academic and official rationales are confirmed by observed language practices. The passing of the Swedish Language Act of 2009 followed debates in academia and the media which not infrequently characterised English as a major threat to the survival of Swedish. However, despite the strong belief in the utility of English widely held in Sweden, the Swedish language is the preferred language of Swedes as well as immigrants in most domains. These results reveal a contradiction between the arguments put forward by a number of academics, educators and journalists concerning the 'threat' of English, and the language practices of ordinary folk in their daily lives. ABSTRACT: Over the last three decades scholars promoting the world Englishes paradigm (WE) have worked towards establishing a more positive attitude towards international varieties of English. However, despite the best intentions of Western linguists working in this field, there is an obvious imbalance between the developed and developing world in many contexts of English language education. Educators and teachers in many Outer Circle and Expanding Circle contexts face difficulties in terms of conditions, facilities, and resources very different from those of Western institutions. Academics in developing societies have parallel difficulties in publishing research, both in journals and in books with international publishers, while local options for publishing are often restricted. This paper sets out to review current approaches to world Englishes from a range of perspectives, from English studies to sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, lexicography,‘popularizers’ and critical linguistics. It then proceeds to consider current debates on English worldwide and world Englishes, noting the recent criticisms of the world Englishes approach from a rhetoric of a critical linguistics ironically at odds with the realities of many educational settings. This short foreword discusses the background to this special issue, which began as a colloquium in De La Salle University in November 2001. Various tensions related to the ideological and political background to English in the Philippines are represented in this special issue, including those concerning bilingual education versus vernacular education (Bernardo); linguistic imperialism and neocolonialism (Tupas); and exonormative versus endonormative standards in English language education (Bautista, Bolton and Butler, and Tayao). Some contributions are more descriptive in orientation (Gonzalez, Dayag and McFarland), while other papers deal with Philippine English literary studies (Martin, McMahon, Hidalgo, Abad, Manlapaz, and Dumdum, Mo, and Mojares). This paper sets out to consider a range of issues relevant to the study of Philippine English vocabulary, including the importance of dictionaries in the legitimization of world Englishes, the description of lexical innovations, and the historical development and codification of the Philippine English lexicon. A number of early sources suggest that Filipino words began to be borrowed into the everyday English of the American colonizers at a very early stage of cultural contact. Today, the range of English finding expression in various domains of public life speaks to a vibrant and creative word stock reflecting the dramatically hybrid quality of life in Philippine society. The baggage of the past remains, however, in the Philippine lexicon enshrined in various editions of Webster's dictionary, which largely represents a colonial inventory of the tribes and products of the Philippine Islands. ABSTRACT: This paper provides a brief guide to published research relevant to the study of Hong Kong Kong English, together with a selective bibliography. Hong Kong now has a thriving research culture although a substantial proportion of published research has earlier been devoted to applied linguistic and language pedagogy, where the discussion of 'Hong Kong English' has frequently been linked to studies of error analysis and interlanguage. The selective bibliography attempts to survey published research in those areas of sociolinguistics and applied linguistics of most relevance to the world Englishes paradigm, and also includes a section listing publications related to Hong Kong creative writing in English. ABSTRACT: In this paper the authors discuss the themes of autonomy and creativity as they have been expressed in this special issue. At a linguistic level, the emergence of Hong Kong English has been clouded by a cluster of language ideologies within a localised complaint tradition. This has included discourses relating to 'monolingualism', the 'invisibility' of Hong Kong English, and 'falling standards'. Parallel discourses have also constrained creative writing in Hong Kong, but the appearance of new Hong Kong writers points the way to a fresh and energetic future for literary creativity. This article discusses the results of a sociolinguistic survey of language that was conducted in Hong Kong, China. Recent developments in sociolinguistics have been marked by an unequivocal trend to attach primary significance to concrete, first-hand data collected from the field. Hong Kong is one area in Asia where relatively little has hitherto been done in this respect. Most sociolinguistic studies in Hong Kong hitherto have concentrated mainly on areas closely linked to education. These have covered areas of crucial importance, notably language attitudes among school children and university students, the medium-of-instruction issue, and code mixing and code switching, but again have limited their scope to issues primarily linked to education. The practical aims of the sociolinguistic survey are to understand and analyze the status and functions of English and Chinese in Hong Kong, and the way in which the two languages interact and complement each other. The survey of language was conceived primarily as a comprehensive and detailed investigation that would extend over a number of years. The sociolinguistic enterprise as it has developed in the last years or so, subsumes a number of separate and distinct approaches to the relationship of language and society. These include such similar fields or subfields as ethnomethodology, discourse analysis, the ethnography of speaking, anthropological linguistics, and the sociology of language.

The article presents a content analysis of "World Englishes" on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary. It reflects on the intellectual territory that the journal has traversed. Applied linguistics enjoyed a strong predominance in the first years of the journal. A second tier of attention is comprised by contact linguistics, feature analysis, critical linguistics, and bilingual creativity.
