The problem addressed in this article is related to the difficulties observed in the causal connectors in ELE learners of proficiency level A2 and B1 with French, German and English L1. To do this, a study is carried out in the areas of Corpus of Learners in computational format (Computer Learner Corporation, CLC) and Computer Aided Error Analysis. The variables considered correspond to the trend of use of causal connectors and the identification of causal errors according to the level of competence A2 and B1 and the mother tongue of the learners. From the CAELE corpus, a subcorpus of sentences with causal connectors has been delimited, made up of 1,578 textual sentences of Anglo-Saxon, French-speaking and German learners of ELE. The main objectives are to determine the frequencies of correct use and the frequencies of errors in the use of grounds. The results show a greater use of the causal connector because with 87% in both levels. The other causes follow with a percentage of 2% each: the causal connector as, the conjunctive phrases due to and since, the prepositive phrases thanks to that and because the conjunctive phrase since, the causal connector then and the phrase prepositive by + infinitive with 1%. The connector because it was searched with 3 different forms of writing: why; because. However, in terms of its functionality in all contexts of use, it turned out to express a causal relationship. Regarding the mother tongue, the German learners, unlike the other learners, were the ones who presented the greatest problems in terms of the use of causal connectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study was to conduct a comparative analysis of the grammatical systems of the Russian and French languages to identify significant differences that must be taken into account when studying Russian as a foreign language (RFL), and to offer a series of exercises aimed at preventing important errors in students' speech from a communicative point of view. Comparing the systems, we compiled a list of grammatical features of the French language that affect the productive mastery of the Russian language, and offered examples of exercises aimed at preventing mistakes. A study of the effectiveness of the use of exercises was held at the Omsk Tank-Automotive Engineering Institute from 2016 to 2019 (in total, 50 students took part in the experiment). The learning outcomes allow us to talk about the prospects of considering the characteristics of the native language of cadets in teaching Russian as a foreign language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents an analysis of interview data from a francophone community in northeastern Ontario to know more about their lives through relational perspective. Topics include application of textometrical analysis of the data using Alceste and Lexico software; analysis of community involvement, family life, and the relationship to work and leisure; and the importance of combining freedom and determination, conscious and unconscious, reason and emotion, and individual and society.

The article focuses on increase in the number of Francophones in the municipalities of the Flemish periphery of Brussels, Belgium. It mentions linguistic insecurity that is very well highlighted by Michel Francard but also an exacerbation of the problems due to the distribution of languages ​​on the national territory. It also mentions need to understand the Belgian linguistic reality and French Revolution of entities and socio-cultural aspects.

This article investigates the impact of diatopic determinants, and more specifically, ethnic and geographic origins, on non-standard language use in francophone rap (in France and Belgium). This study relies on a lexicographic analysis to produce quantitative results that are then analysed qualitatively with the help of extracts from rap tracks and semi-structured interviews with francophone rappers. This article looks at a variety of possible determinants, including multicultural communities, immigration, flows of people, notions of power relations, authenticity and conflicts between cities and départements. The general conclusion from the analysis is that the diatopic determinants do not have a marked impact on quantitative variation within the corpus when it comes to the overall use of non-standard language, although some wider differences emerge in relation to specific categories, such as the absence of verlan by Marseille rappers or the higher use of Arabic, slang and verlan by rappers of Algerian origin. Although it is often assumed that language involves an arbitrary relationship between form and meaning, many studies have demonstrated that nonwords like maluma are associated with round shapes, while nonwords like takete are associated with sharp shapes (i.e., the Maluma/Takete effect, Köhler, 1929/1947). The majority of the research on sound symbolism has used nonwords, but Sidhu and Pexman (2015) recently extended this effect to existing labels: real English first names (i.e., the Bob/Kirk effect). In the present research we tested whether the effects of name sound symbolism generalize to French speakers (Experiment 1) and French names (Experiment 2). In addition, we assessed the underlying mechanism of name sound symbolism, investigating the roles of phonology and orthography in the effect. Results showed that name sound symbolism does generalize to French speakers and French names. Further, this robust effect remained the same when names were presented in a curved vs. angular font (Experiment 3), or when the salience of orthographic information was reduced through auditory presentation (Experiment 4). Together these results suggest that the Bob/Kirk effect is pervasive, and that it is based on fundamental features of name phonemes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We compared French‐ and English‐speaking fifth‐grade (10‐year‐old) children's performance in number transcoding. Whereas English two‐digit number names follow the decimal structure (base 10), the structure of French two‐digit number words over 60 follow a vigesimal structure (base 20). Children undertook two number transcoding tasks. While children were generally successful at the tasks, English‐speaking children significantly outperformed French‐speaking children for numbers following a vigesimal structure in French compared to a decimal structure in English (i.e., numbers >60). Our findings show that verbal number name structures influence children's performance in numerical tasks, even though fifth‐grade children have well passed the initial stage of acquiring transcoding skills for two‐digit numbers. These findings highlight the importance of language specificities in children's number transcoding. The article examines the Acadian artists' discourses on Francophone authenticity relevant to the use of written and oral French language in extra-regional Francophone spaces. Topics covered include the experiences of the artists in the creation and performance of their art, Francophone linguistic insecurity, the role of Acadian artists as social actors, and linguistic marketplaces.

Cette recherche vise à examiner empiriquement l'idée commune que les Suisses romands parlent lentement. Nous avons comparé, en parole lue, diverses variables temporelles produites par des locuteurs provenant d'une variété régionale française (Brunoy en Ile-de-France) et de deux variétés régionales suisses romandes (Neuchâtel et Nyon), et ce, en tenant compte de l’âge et du sexe des locuteurs. Les résultats montrent, d'une part, que, parmi les diverses variables temporelles, seule la vitesse d'articulation permet de distinguer les locuteurs des trois variétés régionales. In today's globalized and multilingual mediascape the practicalities of inter-language translation have become increasingly relevant in the newsroom and the question has been raised how multilingualism affects journalistic practice. This question seems particularly relevant in Belgium, where the political tension between Dutch-speaking and French-speaking communities has recently dominated the news agenda. In this paper we report on team fieldwork conducted in the TV newsroom of Belgium's French-language public broadcasting corporation RTBF in the spring of 2009. In particular, we will present a case study in which a journalist struggles with the integration of a number of Dutch-language quotes in a news report on the demise of the fashion industry. Our behind-the-scenes analysis, from the storyboard meeting until broadcasting, leads us to question whether the language in which source materials are available can be considered a news value in Belgium. In line with recent calls in media linguistics, our approach is a linguistic ethnographic one, demonstrating the added value of a fine-grained analysis of the discursive processes at the heart of newsmaking routines, one that allows us to revisit news values as decision-making parameters not just in gatekeeping but throughout the news production process. Canada is often considered a pioneer or an "ideal type" society with respect to taking into account the multiple demands for recognition made by the groups that shape multiculturalism in this country. How do we correlate the cultural diversity that comes from immigration to the particular demands of Francophone minority and First Nations communities? This question is addressed through an account of the very particular situation faced by Canada's three territories (Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories) and the relationships among the various communities that live there. Over time, these northern societies have in fact become a unique "makeshift society" in Canada, but not without their challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
