This research and development study aimed to develop the prototype of virtual learning implemented in flipped classrooms and evaluate its effectiveness as a tool for developing Thai undergraduates' English receptive skills. To assess if the designed prototype is effective, a quasi-experimental method was employed. The experimental sample group consisted of 40 undergraduates studying English as a required general education subject at a university in Thailand. They were purposively selected as their English proficiency level did not meet the university requirement of not lower than 600 of the TOEIC scores for graduation. The actual TOEIC tests as a pre- and post-tests, have been employed to examine if the prototype was effective. The collected data from pre- and post-tests were then analyzed through the t-Test and ANOVA. The results showed that the designed prototype applied in teaching and learning through the three online virtual platforms, namely Second Life, VRChat, and the ClassStart in the flipped classrooms was effective for developing students' English receptive skills, as the overall development of students' English receptive skills, both listening and reading, as shown from their post-test English TOEIC scores had significant development, showing that the post-test scores were higher than those of their pre-test's. Therefore, applying this prototype to language teaching and learning as a pedagogy is highly advised.

AI-generated paraphrasing tools, especially QuillBot and Paraphrasing Tool, play a crucial role in preventing plagiarism in academic writing. However, their effectiveness and proficiency have been questioned, particularly regarding the adequacy of their strategies. This qualitative study analyzed the paraphrasing strategies and proficiency levels of QuillBot and Paraphrase Tool. Using a purposive sampling technique, all 30 abstracts from one issue of the "Journal of Second Language Writing" were paraphrased using the two paraphrasing tools in their standard modes, and the results were analyzed using the frameworks of Keck (2014) and Nabhan et al. (2021). The results of the study indicated that both tools primarily used synonym substitution, with QuillBot favoring word-level changes and Paraphrase Tool emphasizing sentence restructuring. QuillBot tended to show minimal revision, followed by moderate revision, while Paraphrase Tool exhibited more moderate revision, followed by minimal and substantial revision. Paraphrase Tool exhibited broader paraphrasing capability than QuillBot, but both tools show some paraphrasing limitations. Overall, while these tools may enhance some writing, writers should thoroughly review the core concepts of the original texts and grammatical structures in specific contexts. For novice writers, paraphrasing practice in classrooms should be conducted under teachers' guidance. AIgenerated tools should be secondary.

Mastery of the art of crafting online reviews and responses is essential as a valuable additional tool for enhancing learners' English proficiency in specialised contexts. This study aims to: 1) Examine the formality levels in crafting reviews and responses; 2) Explore face-threatening acts utilised in reviews and politeness strategies employed in responses; and 3) Uncover moves and steps in composing reviews and responses. Data was collected from the Top 25 Hotels in the World in 2022 according to Tripadvisor.com. Six distinct corpora were formed, comprising positive, negative, and mixed reviews, along with corresponding responses, resulting in 87,973 tokens. Findings show reviewers leaned towards casual language (85.87%), while respondents used a consultative style (82.67%) in their responses. The shift from casual to consultative occurred most frequently (70.67%). For politeness, admiration (73.07%) and expressions of complaints/reprimands (64.53%) were common in reviews. In responses, strategies like offering, promising, or giving gifts (72.00%) and apologising and begging for forgiveness (50.40%) were prevalent. Reviews used three moves and ten steps, while responses employed six moves and 16 steps. These insights can be integrated into ESP classrooms to enhance review and response writing skills effectively.

This paper describes a Capability Approach analysis of the capabilities, functionings, and conversion factors reported by learners on workplace-based mobile language learning courses. The study used secondary data from student satisfaction surveys from 556 learners who were all recent migrants to the US and who were using the courses to study English. Use of the Capability Approach highlights that the promises of mobile learning were not available to all learners as conversion factors (individual, social, environmental, and technological) inhibited their participation in the courses. The study shows how some learners experienced a tension between well-being and agency as they were unable to study the content they wanted in the way they wanted. It also demonstrates that factors around the business model of the company that created the courses impacted the level to which learners were able to participate in the program. Finally, the study illustrates that learners were able to extend the language they learned through the course into other areas of their lives and to help others.

This study explores the correlation between technology utilization and language acquisition while analyzing the impact of moderating variables on this relation. Our meta-analysis approach analyzes data from 43 extracts out of 19 primary studies published between 2012 and 2021. Our data analysis employs a random-effect model utilizing a significance level of [Alpha] = 0.05. Additionally, the authors examine four moderating variables: level of education, location of research, proficiency in language, and year of publication. Technology-based language acquisition outperforms traditional methods, indicating a significant and moderate impact on the learning process. This study enhances comprehension of the efficacy of technology in language acquisition by identifying various factors, such as the geographical location of research, methods of assessing language proficiency, and technology type employed. However, there is insufficient evidence to support the notion that educational level or sample size significantly impact technology-based language acquisition. This meta-analysis highlights the importance of considering nuanced factors when integrating technology into language learning. The findings emphasize the possibility of technology to transform methods of acquiring language and urge additional investigation into customized strategies that optimize its advantages.

Anxiety can affect learners' performance in several ways. It can be a helpful motivational tool to assist students in learning a language. At the same time, anxiety can become a serious factor in hindering language acquisition. This study examines the relationship between students' writing performance and anxiety levels across three different proficiency groups of students. The participants were fifty EFL students enrolled in a Business English Writing course, and the target writing genre was inquiries and acknowledgments of inquiry letters. The two main instruments used to collect data were students' writing samples and closed-ended questionnaires. The data were analyzed utilizing descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's coefficient correlation. This study showed a significant difference in writing anxiety between the high and the low-proficiency groups. In contrast, it was found that there were no statistically significant differences in anxiety between the high and the mid-proficiency groups. In addition, the study's outcomes indicated that the students' level of anxiety varied across the three groups of students. It was found that the students with a high level of anxiety performed less professionally than those with lower writing anxiety. The findings provide insights into teaching and learning writing, particularly into ways to decrease learners' anxiety and improve their learning outcomes.

This study investigated the contributions of flipped and blended teaching to EFL learners' pragmatic awareness. The participants were 90 Iranian intermediate female EFL learners in six intact classes divided into three 30-member groups each comprising two classes (i.e., two experimental and one control group). A Preliminary English Test (PET) was administered to assure language proficiency homogeneity. Next, the three groups received a discourse completion test (DCT) before instruction in flipped and blended modes for the experimental groups and conventional instruction for the control group. After treatment, the posttest of DCT was administered. Moreover, 20 students took part in semi-structured interviews. The results of One-way ANOVA revealed that flipped and blended instruction significantly improved participants' pragmatic awareness. The analysis of interview responses indicated that both groups held positive attitudes towards using flipped and blended instruction. EFL teachers may decide to implement flipped and blended instruction to enhance EFL learners' pragmatic awareness.

This study tried to design a WhatsApp bot to be implemented in English language vocabulary learning context in Oman. 150 Omani English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students from three different proficiency levels were selected based on random sampling. To measure the effectiveness of the treatment, pretests, posttests, and delayed posttests were conducted, respectively. The TAM 2 extended questionnaire was also used to understand learners' perceptions regarding the use of the WhatsApp bot in the learning process. The results of the study revealed that the WhatsApp bot, on all three levels, works nicely and practically. Although experimental groups, who used WhatsApp bot, at elementary and intermediate levels showed significant differences from the traditional face-to-face classes, pre-intermediate students showed no significant difference between the two mentioned terms. It was also understood that chatbots could be the best supplementary materials assisting teaching in delivering materials.

The present study explores the perspectives and instructional approaches adopted by five university English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Thailand about using translanguaging pedagogy in monolingual English instruction. Examining the concept of translanguaging pedagogy and framed in an exploratory-descriptive qualitative research design through individual interviews, the findings emphasize the significance of acknowledging students' first language, emphasizing the favorable opinions of the participants toward the use of translanguaging in English language classrooms. The findings also demonstrate that translanguaging pedagogy serves as a scaffolding mechanism, enabling students to leverage their pre-existing linguistic abilities to enhance their proficiency in the English language. This study makes a valuable contribution to the existing body of research on translanguaging pedagogy, as it does not only place importance on students' linguistic and cultural backgrounds, fostering a classroom environment that is safe and inclusive, but it also emphasizes the significance of language teachers recognizing and accepting the coexistence of translanguaging pedagogy in classrooms where English monolingual policies are mandated. We discuss the implications and offer research recommendations.

With this article I explore the relationship between core academic language skills (CALS) -- a construct representing a set of high-utility language skills needed to manage the linguistic features prevalent in academic texts across content areas -- and schooling outcomes. There has long been an understanding that there is a distinction between academic language and colloquial language, originally described by Jim Cummins (1976) as cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP) and basic interpersonal communication skills (BICS). The construct has only recently been operationalised (Uccelli, Phillips Galloway, Barr, Meneses & Dobbs, 2015) as the individual skills and competencies that underlie CALP. The CALS construct describes an empirically testable set of competencies that address this need. This has been used in the development of an assessment instrument aimed at South African learners -- the CALS-I-ZA (MacFarlane, Barr & Uccelli, 2022) -- and I investigate whether a measurable link exists between this assessment and schooling outcomes for a sample of Grade 6 learners in 2 public schools in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Schooling outcomes have been measured using the Gauteng Provincial Common Assessments -- a provincial examination intended to measure schooling outcomes on a comparable assessment instrument. The study reported on here shows a moderately strong correlation between the CALS-I-ZA and the provincial common examinations (r = 0.64 and r = 0.65). This predictive relationship between CALS and schooling outcomes leads to an argument for direct instruction in CALS as an embedded feature of pedagogy in South Africa.

This research paper attempts to investigate the organization and effectiveness of vocabulary notebooks by distinguishing several benefits the implementation of this technique brings in the acquisition of technical terminology through an "English for Specific Purposes course". When tackling with language learning, it is needless to emphasize the noteworthiness and the importance of vocabulary in this process. Appertaining to technical terminology, this plays entirely pertinent. Various studies have concluded that vocabulary notebooks (henceforth VN) efficiently expose different learners' strategies within this single strategy, which led us to research VN. These research data were obtained mainly by applying the observational research technique, a vocabulary oral and written exam, and a comprehensive questionnaire on the effectiveness of the Vocabulary Notebook. Mechanical Engineering, Textile Engineering, and Hydrotechnical Engineering students at the Polytechnic University of Tirana were selected to obtain the data. The observation is partly overt and partly covert. Students of Mechanical Engineering and Textile Engineering (75 students) are the treatment group wherein the Mechanical Engineering students are an overt group and the Textile Engineering students serve as the covert observational group while on the other hand, the Hydrotechnical Engineering (45 students) students are the control group. The data were obtained during and at the end of the semester. Throughout the observation all along the 1st semester, it was perceived that most of the students organized their VN by utilizing mainly Microsoft Word downloaded on their Smart Phones, while the rest used the traditional paper notebook to organize their technical VN. The organization of the VN reflected the strategies each of the students implemented to learn technical terminology. At the end, students were tested on their acquired terminology through an oral and a short-written exam and then a questionnaire was handed to them. The students of the overt group making use of a digitalized form of a Notebook resulted to have acquired most of the technical vocabulary. In the main, the overt group outperformed the covert group on the acquisition of technical vocabulary, while the control group's score on the oral exam was significantly below, compared to the all-inclusive treatment group. Students' questionnaire revealed that overall students had a positive approach to this strategy and they embraced the autonomy acquired throughout the semester by implementing this strategy. With the exception of the effectiveness on vocabulary acquisition, which was on higher levels, this strategy proved itself once again to be an enhancer and promoter of learner autonomy. This study examined the relationships between reading assistant (RA) software usage, reading comprehension ability, and post-TOEIC reading scores among Thai EFL university students. Seventy-six students from a private international university in central Thailand participated. Data were collected from students' pre- and post-TOEIC reading scores and their RA software usage over twelve weeks. Pearson's r was used to analyze the connections between various variables: weekly duration spent on RA software, count of chosen reading passages, reading level identified by the RA software, fluency and accuracy levels per minute, percentage-based reading comprehension score, and pre- and post-TOEIC reading scores. The findings revealed some correlations among variables such as time invested in RA software, reading level, fluency and accuracy rates per minute, and reading comprehension scores. However, there was no significant correlation between the frequency of RA software use and students' post-TOEIC reading scores. This suggests that using RA software may not directly impact learners' reading comprehension skills. The study implies that while certain language learning tools may be beneficial, they might not substantially enhance language proficiency as measured by standardized tests like the TOEIC reading comprehension skills. Some implications for improving EFL students' reading comprehension skills through RA software are briefly discussed.

This study examines the correlation between the theory of pragmatic discourse of givenness and CP adverbial clauses from the two datasets: Q1 SCOPUS applied linguistics research articles and Thai undergraduate students' writing. The first set was 24 applied linguistics research articles from journals of "English for Specific Purposes" and "English for Academic Purposes." There were 45 tokens of adverbial clauses. Another set of data collection was 35 participants, majoring in English, whose English proficiency was A2 or elementary based on their "Oxford Placement Test." The second dataset contained 31 tokens of CP adverbial clauses in descriptive and narrative writing. Data was analyzed using "Pearson Correlation" in SPSS29. The first section showed there was a statistically significant relationship between the theory of pragmatic discourse of givenness and CP adverbial clauses in applied linguistics research articles where the p-value was reported at 0.011. The reasons why CP adverbial clauses are used are due to giving the arguments from previous studies. This implied that the SCOPUS writers knew well how to use CP adverbial clauses regarding form, functions and genre. In contrast, the results in the second dataset showed there was a statistically significant relationship between the CP adverbial clauses and non-givenness produced by Thai undergraduate students where the p-value was reported at 0.001. Accordingly, Thai private university students whose English proficiency was elementary used CP adverbial clauses arbitrarily; non-reasonable. This implies that they knew form, but they did not know what are the function CP adverbial clauses which were applied in different genres. It is expected that the results in this study will help Thai undergraduate students improve their usage of CP adverbial clauses accurately and appropriately.

This paper provides a critical reflection on the academic writing ability of English second-language students in a South African university. Acquiring proficiency in academic writing is one of the essential skills that students at the tertiary level are expected to acquire. One challenge that has emerged after the outbreak of COVID-19 is that universities in restructuring their curricula have not given adequate time to interact with beginning students to provide writing instructions to help them meet the standard expected; this challenge motivated this study. A qualitative research method was used and data was collected from a selection of first-year students, registered in the first semester, for a compulsory writing course. Participants were given a narrative essay and all scripts were marked and rated by two experienced lecturers, using a rubric. The findings indicated that students encounter numerous challenges in writing coherent academic essays, as they have low proficiency in English which is the medium of instruction.

This research uses Bloom's taxonomy in English-language writing and speaking skills assessment rubrics. A descriptive qualitative research method was adopted, and data were collected through observations, interviews, and English major students' course grades. Five lecturers and 25 students participated in the research, and the findings revealed that applying Bloom's taxonomy in an assessment rubric focuses on cognitive assessment at the two lowest levels, namely knowledge and understanding. We also identified five benefits of applying Bloom's taxonomy, mainly motivating students and improving learning performance based on the criteria. Therefore, the assessments helped the lecturers and students achieve their teaching and learning goals. The findings presented here have implications for developing learning curricula, improving basic competencies, creating indicators for achieving semester learning plans, and achieving educational goals at local and international levels.

This study examined the Turkish EFL students' perceptions of task-based language assessment (TBLA) in the blended learning environment at the tertiary level. It aimed to discover whether there were any significant differences in their perceptions based on gender and level of proficiency. It was a cross-sectional survey design study using the convenience sampling method with the participation of 54 students. Students' Perceptions of Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ) was used to collect data descriptively, reporting the means and standard deviations of the results via SPSS 22. The Cronbach's alpha value, which reveals the scale's internal consistency, was calculated to be 0.81. After checking the normality and linearity of the data, a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was carried out. The results showed that the students positively perceived TBLA in the blended learning environment. Although the female students obtained slightly higher mean scores on the three scales of the questionnaire, no significant gender differences were reported. Likewise, there was not a significant difference between the A2 and B1 level students' perceptions despite the A2 level students' slightly higher mean scores on three scales.

English is widely used in the working environment globally. In Malaysia, many employers have English courses which relate to their job requirements. This is to help employees to become more competent, fluent, and confident in communicating in English while working. Besides academic qualifications, employers pay great attention to employees' English communication skills. This paper explores to what extent the Oral Communication Skill (OCS) Module for a training program can help improve Malaysian working adults' confidence levels in terms of fluency. It proposes that the activities in the OCS module are needed so that employees can speak fluently and, as a result, build their level of confidence. Three working adults were selected to use the module for 12 weeks. Their performances, interview responses, and reflective journal entries were recorded and analysed. The findings reported a growth in the participants' confidence as a result of increased fluency, the awareness of the need to reflect on their speaking performances and to have appropriate English preparation as a key element before delivering oral presentations.

With increasing global interconnectivity, effective cross-cultural interaction has become crucial for global citizens. However, learners in non-English speaking countries often lack practical English communicative skills and opportunities for authentic language practice. This study explores the effectiveness of a virtual exchange programme in enhancing English proficiency and intercultural communication among learners in non-English speaking countries. Through a mixed-methods approach, the research evaluated pre-and post-engagement competencies of participants over an eight-week period. Results indicated significant improvements in intercultural communication and English language skills, despite challenges such as technological limitations and time zone differences. In summary, the study highlights the potential of virtual exchange programmes for fostering cultural understanding and language development in tertiary education, advocating for further exploration in diverse intercultural settings.

The current study attempted to measure the impact of using an interactive WhatsApp bot designed using Python language programming in grammar learning. To this end, sixty Omani pre-intermediate English proficiency learners were the sample population of this study to act as a control and experimental group, with an equal number of students in each group. A pretest was conducted to measure students' grammatical knowledge and ensure the homogeneity of the students before treatment. Although both groups received in-class instructions on using grammar, the experimental group received treatment that used an interactive WhatsApp bot as an extra facilitator to obtain materials outside of the classroom. After the treatment period, a posttest was conducted to compare the results of the two groups. Three weeks later, a delayed post-test was conducted to check the students' retention of the grammatical structure. The study's findings showed that both groups progressed in the posttest, which could result from teachers` instructions; however, the experimental group showed statistically significant progress in the posttest compared to the control group. The results of this study could provide better opportunities for teachers, students, and institutions to work efficiently and accurately in an academic environment.

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of interactive learning module technology (ILMT) in teaching Kazakh as a second language in secondary schools in the Republic of Kazakhstan. This research was carried out at Russian-medium secondary schools during the academic year 2021-2022. There were two groups in the sample: the experimental (n=63) and control (n=61). The experimental group received an education based on the ILMT while the control group received an education based on the curriculum's traditional technique. The study used a mixed research design and was divided into two sections: quantitative and qualitative. A semi-experimental pre- and post-test control group design was adopted in the quantitative section. The qualitative section employed phenomenology. The quantitative data were acquired using the students' knowledge assessment test and analyzed using comparative analysis. An interview questionnaire and observations were used to obtain qualitative data which was then evaluated using content analysis. The experimental group outperformed the control group in terms of mean post-test knowledge assessment test scores. The ILMT in teaching Kazakh as a second language is efficient in improving the quality of mastering Kazakh language by Russian-speaking students. Content analysis showed that the ILMT helps to reduce students' anxiety and increase independence which is necessary for the development of students' communication skills.

The extent to which L2 television is viewed by foreign language learners will depend on the degree to which it is understood. The addition of captions has been shown to support comprehension (e.g., Birulés-Muntané & Soto-Faraco, 2016; Montero-Perez, Peters, & Desmet, 2014), especially when proficiency is low (e.g., Lavaur & Bairstow, 2011). Yet, little is known about the extent to which captions benefit comprehension as L2 proficiency increases. This study seeks to investigate the effect of captions at different proficiency levels, and to identify the level at which captions cease to enhance comprehension. A total of 250 Catalan/Spanish university students, who had L2 English proficiency ranging from A1 to C2, viewed nine episodes of an English TV series with and without captions. Results showed that captioned viewing had a significant advantage over uncaptioned viewing in comprehension tests with multiple-choice and true-false items, and that learners with higher L2 proficiency and larger vocabulary performed better. While having access to captions increased the odds of a correct response independently of learners' L2 proficiency and vocabulary knowledge, the additive benefits of captions were no longer significant at the C2 level, suggesting a threshold beyond which uncaptioned viewing does not negatively impact comprehension. Pedagogical implications are discussed.

Background: In Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes, there are concerns about student teachers' English language proficiency. Aim: To discuss the first iteration of the PrimTEd English language and literacy test and analyse the results for information about the test instrument and about student teacher attainment. Setting: South African student teachers in BEd programmes preparing for teaching in primary schools, across six public universities, participated in the test from 2020 to 2022. Methods: The student results for the PrimTEd English assessment were analysed using basic statistics, focussing on the largest samples of first-year and fourth-year students who took both the subtests. The items in each subtest were coded according to their underlying language constructs, and each subtest was subjected to Rasch analysis before the test was considered as a whole. Results: The initial test showed the attainment of fourth-year students (mean = 55%, standard deviation [SD] = 21%, n = 731) was only 3 percentage points higher than that of first-year students (mean = 52%, SD = 20%, n = 1177). Conclusion: The similarities between the first- and fourth-year students' test results is concerning. There remains much work to be done in building student teachers' English language proficiency in BEd programmes. Contribution: The findings and recommendations should be useful to ITE lecturers in designing programmes that enable progressive development of English language and literacy competence from first year to graduation.

This research paper delved into the critical issue of applying English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) assessment principles in local English language tests used for non-native English speakers in Iranian language institutes. A qualitative content analysis was made on 60 local tests, dissecting them into domains, dimensions, and rating rubrics to scrutinize their alignment with ELF assessment principles. The study unveiled that despite some alignment with ELF assessment principles, key aspects like local communicative context, intercultural competence, and linguistic diversity are often overlooked. In particular, writing and reading tests failed to fully reflect these principles, and listening and speaking assessments showed biases towards native English varieties. The study provides crucial insights for test developers to foster a more nuanced and accurate assessment of non-native English speakers' abilities. Moreover, it highlights the need to embed ELF principles into test construction, argues for broader assessment scopes and a focus on locally relevant tasks, and contributes to more equitable and contextually relevant English language proficiency tests by emphasizing linguistic diversity in assessment frameworks.

Determining students' language proficiency is essential for successful instruction and learning objectives in many educational settings. To this end, one of the most efficient assessment tools for measuring language proficiency is the C-test. Thus, the primary aim of this research is to assess the performance of university students through the C-Test and to analyze the extent to which this test is valid in measuring language ability. A standardized C-Test has been created with four brief passages, each containing 20 gaps. The length of each passage varied from 95 to 109 words. Throughout each passage, only the first and last sentences were not changed. The test was taken by 100 students; 39 were male and 61 were female at Al-Nisour University/Department of English in Baghdad, Iraq. The sample consists of two groups. Both groups come from the same school and would receive similar educational input in both cases based on their grade level. The validity and reliability of the C-Test were investigated using various techniques. The study analyzed the performance of fourth- and third-year students on the Common Language Proficiency Test in Iraq. The results showed that the test discriminates well between high-ability and low-ability examinees, with no significant difference between the two groups. The Rasch model separation reliability was relatively high, and the data were one-dimensional. The students faced difficulties in guessing the most appropriate words due to their limited English proficiency. The results suggest that developing and implementing this test could significantly improve students' academic achievements in basic foreign language classes in Iraq.

Despite being a popular topic in language testing, cognitive load has not received enough attention in vocabulary test items. The purpose of the current study was to scrutinize the cognitive load and vocabulary test items' differences, examinees' reaction times, and perceived difficulty. To this end, 150 students were selected using cluster/convenience-sampling, and took the Cambridge Placement Test (CPT) and Vocabulary Size Test (VST; Nation & Beglar, 2007). After uploading the vocabulary-size test's items in PsychoPy software, there was a behavioral stage to measure students' reaction times and correct responses. Out of these 150 high school students, a total of 60 (20 from each proficiency level of elementary/intermediate/advanced groups) were selected. In this quantitative study, all 60 students were interviewed to determine their perceived difficulty of the international VST items and their item's difficulty-index. The data were analyzed quantitatively via simple regression and qualitatively through the examination of the students' perceived difficulty. The results and interview findings revealed a significant connection between cognitive load/reaction time, difficulty estimate, and perceived difficulty at intermediate level. In contrast, at elementary and advanced levels, these variables could not predict the cognitive load. The findings can help to test, course, and syllabus designers by educating them on the significance of cognitive load theory so that they can base their exam designs on its premises and alleviate students' increased cognitive-workload.

Becoming one of six official United Nations languages, English proficiency has become a prominent requirement for students and professionals entering international education and/ or careers, as assessed through standardized English proficiency tests. English learners conducted varied procedures to pursue the minimum test score criteria, including joining an English test preparation program. This study investigates the effect of English test preparation as an intervention on EFL learners' English language proficiency performance by reviewing the effect sizes found by previous studies using meta-analysis of pre-post contrasts. A total of 20 selected studies, according to the criteria determined by researchers between 2018-2021 and conducted in various countries, were collected from Google Scholar sources and included in the research. English language proficiency performance, as indicated by their test scores, is independent of the language skills tested with a p-value of less than 0.05 (p-value = 0.00) and an average weighted effect (M) that appears to be 0.859. This research implies that adequate test preparation is essential for English language learners who wish to achieve the desired level of proficiency. Apart from the ability to write, speak, and read, the psychological aspects of students are also important to prepare before they take the intended test.

Language Learning Strategies (LLSs) assist learners to develop cognitive or behavioral competences to make the language learning process more self-directed and effective. In the current educational contexts, think-aloud methods are used to provide insights into the cognitive processes of individuals as they engage in enhancement of skills and tasks or problem-solving activities. This study aimed at identifying the type and frequency of LLSs used by intermediate and advanced Jordanian EFL learners and investigating whether there were any qualitative differences in the behaviour of participants while using think-aloud protocols in completing their tasks. A qualitative research design was followed, by sampling 70 senior university students of Al al-Bayt University, Jordan. The Oxford Quick Placement Test was used to further classify them into intermediate (36 students) and advanced (34 students) groups. For major tasks of the study, 20 students were randomly selected from each of these two groups. These groups were assigned think-aloud tasks in reading, writing and listening to investigate the LLSs they used. The results revealed a diverse range of LLSs employed by the participants across various tasks, except for social strategies, as the tasks did not involve any social interaction or communication. It was also revealed that participants were active strategic learners and were aware of their cognitive processes. The study can help EFL learners in general, and Jordanian ones in particular, gain a deeper insight into the actual use of LLSs when dealing with language tasks, which can make a positive impact on their performance.

Humans are born storytellers as they use oral narratives as a vehicle to share their experiences. This study aimed to study how female Egyptian speakers formulate their personal experiences in oral narratives in the English Language. A need of this study was felt because not much is known how Arab EFL speakers build their oral narratives when its structure is talked about. The sample of this study comprised 24 female students from an Egyptian university pursuing a program in English language and literature, divided equally into two groups of intermediate and advanced levels. By using a non-experimental mixed model research design, the data was collected through semi structured interviews. The quantitative results were based on Mann-Whitney Test, which compared two unpaired groups to investigate the differences between the frequencies of the moves in the oral narratives as well as their use of structural tools; while the qualitative results were obtained from the participants' responses in the interview, which gave insight into how the participants formulated their narratives. Results show variations in the moves of narratives in both groups; however, there was no significant difference in the overall structure of each narrative. The study also attempted to compare the narrative structure of the female Egyptian EFL learners with that of their peers. It was found that there was no relationship between EFL proficiency and the structure of the narratives of female Egyptian at both advanced and intermediate levels. These findings will provide useful insights about the structural aspects of the oral narratives of Arab EFL learners.

Engaging students in active learning environments like task-based presentations can be challenging, as several factors influence their motivation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing motivation in task-based learning in the English for Presentation course. Thirty undergraduate students who enrolled in the English for Presentation course in the second semester of the 2022 academic year at a university in Bangkok, Thailand, were purposively selected as the participants for the study. The research instrument was the minute paper that students were asked to write about their thoughts and feelings in response to the presented task, which required them to work independently, in pairs, and in groups. The study revealed that students' intrinsic motivation, English proficiency, task relevance, instructor support, and task variety were the factors that influenced their motivation in task-based learning in the English for Presentation course. The study found that the intrinsic motivation of the students was the most significant factor in the English for Presentation course after considering each factor. The findings of this study are valuable to all stakeholders in the learning and teaching process in order to create successful strategies, raise motivation, and promote positive attitudes about English learning and teaching in Thai context.

This qualitative case study aimed to explore fillers usage to address speaking challenges related to the improvement of self-confidence and motivation in speaking practices done by two English foreign language (EFL) learners of the English department of one of the Islamic Universities in Malang, Indonesia. Data were collected through observations and in-depth interviews to two students employing filler strategies to address speaking challenges related to the improvement of self-confidence and motivation during their speaking exercises. The research revealed that both learners used fillers to address speaking challenges during the conversation due to their linguistic components' shortage such as a limited mastery of vocabularies and having a little understanding on grammar. Fillers might bring them to have more self-confidence in speaking practices shown by not being afraid of making mistakes when they practice speaking with their speaking partners. Fillers might bring them to have more motivation in speaking shown by their enthusiasm to get involved in the discussion whether in group or class discussions. Thus, fillers usage is prominent due to its potential to address speaking challenges, enhance self-confidence and motivation, eventually contributing to an overall improvement in language proficiency particularly in speaking skill.

This classroom practice article explores the integration of TalkAbroad, an online language conversation platform, in an undergraduate World Languages Education program to support pre-service language teachers' oral proficiency development. Two pre-service teachers, facing challenges like family responsibilities and limited study abroad opportunities, engaged in four 30-minute conversations on topics including media, future plans, current events, and cultural comparisons. Through structured post-conversation activities involving transcription, self-assessment, goal setting, and feedback, students exhibited increased self-awareness and confidence in their linguistic abilities. This article emphasizes the platform's positive impact on student learning and highlights TalkAbroad's potential to support language proficiency development, offering valuable insights for future language education practices.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether learning strategies play a mediating role in the relationship between learning attitude and foreign language proficiency. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) were employed to analyze the structural connections among language learning strategies, learning attitudes, and their potential influence on language proficiency. The data were gathered from 1208 Saudi Arabian female secondary school students. The results indicate that learning attitude significantly influences language learning and has a notable impact on students' foreign language proficiency. Additionally, language learning strategies, particularly strategies such as memory, compensation, and cognitive, play a pivotal role in mediating the connection between learning attitude and language proficiency. This study holds implications for English language teaching. Foreign language educators should not only focus on imparting knowledge but also on fostering students' learning strategies and attitudes.

Second language learners, particularly those with lower proficiency, often struggle with insufficient practice and heightened anxiety when speaking. This case study investigates the impact of one-on-one online conversation lessons on a university student's speaking skills and language anxiety. The participant, a university student with low proficiency in the target language, engaged in eight online lessons. Quantitative measurements of speaking skills and anxiety levels were taken using pre- and post-tests. Results indicated that the online lessons effectively improved the participant's speaking abilities and reduced their anxiety. Qualitative analysis of lesson and interview transcripts highlighted specific factors contributing to these changes, such as the role of feedback. This study adds to the field of technology in language learning by demonstrating the potential of online conversation lessons with corrective feedback as an effective individual learning modality for lower-level second language learners.

This study sought to scrutinize the interplay between interlanguage pragmatic learning strategies (IPLS) usage and learner autonomy among male and female English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. It also examines whether gender plays a significant role in the adoption and efficacy of these strategies in the EFL learning context. The study sample consisted of 156 upper-intermediate Saudi EFL learners, comprising an equal distribution of 78 males and 78 females. Data were collected via a proficiency test, learner autonomy survey, and IPLS inventory. The results revealed significant gender-based differences in both learner autonomy scores and the application of IPLS. Female learners displayed more strategic approaches to pragmatic learning and greater autonomy compared to male learners. Additionally, a moderately positive correlation between IPLS use and learner autonomy was found for female learners, whereas a strong positive association was observed for male learners, suggesting the critical role of strategy training in fostering learner autonomy. This study provides significant pedagogical implications and substantial insights into the interplay between learner autonomy and IPLS across genders in EFL learning environments.

The paper examines the relationship between EFL learners' first impressions of their instructors and their speaking performance. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining a test and a questionnaire to provide a comprehensive analysis. The participants were 81 EFL learners at Taif University. The results revealed that the correlation coefficient (r) for the scores and all the constructs was small and not significant, indicating that the first impression of the students of their instructors did not affect their performance on the speaking test. We observed that the correlations among the constructs ranged from medium to high positive correlations. The study used a questionnaire to collect data on the factors that influence the first impression of the instructors, such as physical appearance, attitude, and communication style. The results showed that physical appearance and attitude were the most significant factors that affected the first impression of the instructors. The study also found that the participants who had a positive first impression of their instructors tended to perform better in speaking tasks and had higher levels of motivation and engagement.

Balancing teaching national, regional, and foreign languages presents a challenge for higher education, illustrated by the use of hypertext for multilingual communication. This study investigates the correlation between proficiency in multilingualism and cultural awareness among higher education students. Embedded mixed methods design explores the relationship between multilingualism and cultural awareness quantitatively and qualitatively in higher education in Indonesia. Participants are from various universities in Indonesia, including the State University of Makassar, the State University of Jakarta, the State University of Surabaya, Palangka Raya State Islamic Institute, Timor University, and the University of Northern Sumatra, and they have diverse ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. The questionnaire distributed via Google Form passed validity and reliability tests. The quantitative research used Pearson's r analysis of the relationship between multilingualism learning and cultural awareness. In the qualitative strand, thematic analysis investigates cultural awareness-based multilingualism learning strategies. The research findings reinforce the positive and significant relationship between multilingual learning and cultural awareness, suggesting multilingual competence not only enhances cultural knowledge and participation in cultural practices but deepens understanding of the socio-cultural context and strengthens capacity and positive attitudes towards cultural learning. The study aids practitioners in developing inclusive learning strategies and provides policymakers with empirical evidence for crafting policies to empower multicultural communities.

Understanding latent variables is essential in EFL research. This article examines key latent variables, such as linguistic competence, cognitive ability and socio-cultural factors. These variables play a crucial role in shaping EFL learning experiences and outcomes. Researchers can use methods such as exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) to uncover these variables. By combining theoretical findings with advanced statistical methods, such research provides an understanding of the complex processes involved in language learning. The article points to the need for longitudinal studies and mixed methods to capture the dynamic nature of EFL learning. This approach could contribute to the development of more effective educational strategies that improve teaching practices and learner outcomes. The article also emphasizes the importance of considering the sociocultural context and developing culturally sensitive teaching methods to create an inclusive learning environment. Moreover, this article serves as a guide for future research and practice in language learning.

Traditional English education in China, with its emphasis on grammatical proficiency and written accuracy, often neglects public speaking, resulting in a notable deficiency in practical language application. This study investigated the potential of project-based learning to address this problem by promoting more interactive, student-centered learning experiences that foster authentic language use, specifically aiming to improve public speaking performance among university students in China, who are learning English as a foreign language (EFL). An explanatory sequential mixed method study, involving the pretest and post-test for quantitative data and semistructured interviews for qualitative data, was conducted with 60 students purposely selected as the research participants. By the triangulation of the quantitative and qualitative findings, it was found that students in the experimental group who underwent the project-based learning intervention showed a significant improvement in English public speaking performance compared with the control group. In addition, students who participated in the interview held a positive attitude toward integrating project-based learning strategy into the process of learning English public speaking. These results contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting the adoption of project-based learning approach in EFL teaching, particularly in contexts where enhancing oral communication skills is a priority.

International spouses, individuals who accompany a partner studying in a foreign country, are an important source of support for international students and scholars, yet many academic institutions overlook this population. Research indicates that many international spouses benefit from joining language programs; however, there has been no research on how to design such programs to support international spouses. By drawing on the theoretical constructs of investment (Darvin & Norton, 2015) and capital (Bourdieu, 1986), this study investigates the goals of international spouses, the relationship between these goals and English proficiency, and how international spouses perceived the language resources available to them. Semi-structured interviews with 15 (8 female, 7 male) international spouses in the U.S. revealed that the participants viewed English as relevant to their professional, social, and cultural goals, and that various factors influenced which ESL programs they joined. This study concludes with recommendations for designing programs to support international spouses.

This case study, conducted at a Palestinian university, explored the language learning strategies employed by learners of English as a foreign language and the relationship with proficiency. Furthermore, since gender is often considered a major variable in learning success in some areas of the world, the study wished to explore the role of gender in strategy use and level of proficiency in the Palestinian context. The study included 109 (41 male, 68female) students studying in English preparatory courses prior to entering the university. The data were gathered through an original 60-item language learning strategy questionnaire, modelled to some extent on the "Strategy Inventory for Language Learning" or "SILL" (Oxford, 1990) and constructed from material contributed by the students themselves. The results indicated that students reported medium to frequent strategy use, which was not significantly related to proficiency level, and there were only three significant gender differences according to strategy use, in favor of the females. This suggests that gender is not a salient influence in these students' strategy use or levels of proficiency. This article concludes by suggesting implications both for the immediate context of the study and also for environments beyond the location of the current study.

Guided by Activity Theory framework, this study tends to uncover prominent contradictions in the activity systems in which non-native English as a Foreign Language (EFL) grammar teacher cognition operates. The study attempts to fill the existing research gaps, as there are visible gaps in the literature to address the problem from this angle. To this end, the study used a mixed methods design, employing a teacher belief questionnaire and triangulated by a structured classroom observation checklist. The questionnaire was administered to 132 teachers, selected through stratified random sampling, while eight teachers were observed multiple times, based on purposeful sampling. The results of the study revealed several contradictions in the activity systems of EFL teacher cognition in grammar teaching. Weak teacher cognition caused by these contradictions contributes to the low proficiency level of their students. This research has practical implications and offers recommendations to enhance EFL teacher cognition in the area of grammar instruction.

Despite extensive efforts to improve the quality of English language teaching, Saudi students in the local primary schools have a poor level of proficiency in English. Hence, this study aims to examine the barriers to effective English teaching from the perspectives of teachers in the primary schools in Burydah primary schools in Saudi Arabia. 50 teachers in primary schools in Saudi Arabia were recruited through convenience sampling. The study recruited teachers from Buryadah, a city in Saudi Arabia. Self-reported questionnaires with close- and open-ended questions were used to collect rich data. Several teacher-related, student-related, classroom-related, and school-related challenges were reported. Teachers believed that the key barriers to effective English teaching in descending order were the limited ability to use technology, limited technical support to use technology, irrelevant curriculum, lack of training in immersive learning, lack of student motivation, cultural differences among students, overcrowded curriculum, malfunctioning air conditioners, limited engagement at the class, impaired communication skills, limited use of interactive teaching methods, limited teacher training, dull curriculum or unengaging content, limited students' ability to use technology, large class size, and limited flexibility in adapting the curriculum to the interests and needs of students. There is a need for cooperation among teachers, school headmasters, students, policymakers, and parents to address these barriers.

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of learning the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) 1 reading course through the Udemy platform and assess the learner's satisfaction with learning the Chinese course on the Udemy platform. The participants were 30 zero-foundation learners with minimal exposure to basic Chinese expressions and were randomly selected from those enrolled in the Chinese course on Udemy. The pretest and post-test were designed for this study, and the researchers sent the satisfaction survey to the Chinese language learners to investigate the learners' satisfaction. The findings revealed that the students' post-test scores were significantly higher than the pretest scores; the current online Chinese language courses benefit students in learning the language. The satisfaction survey results showed that learners were satisfied with learning Chinese courses on the Udemy platform.

Creating its own learner corpus, this research proposed to analyze and classify the transition markers used in solo presentation by 30 Thai engineering students based on Hyland (2019)'s Marker Categorization in Textual Metadiscourse. This research also aimed to identify and compare the quantities of individual transition markers among three groups of the selected 30 students (10 high, 10 mid, and 10 low users). The research employed both quantitative and qualitative method through SPSS, Transkriptor, and AntConc. The results showed that--and--was the top word utlized as a textual marker among all three groups while some other top transition markers ranked slightly differently among the groups. In addition to the search on the list of textual markers, the manual observation encountered other phrases acting as textual markers. The results indicated that users from average level can apply phrases as textual markers to communicate coherence instead of using traditional transition markers. Moreover, the "reminders", the act of reminding the listeners of previous content, manifested as a possible indicator of advanced proficiency users as the weak users were found to not produce any of this category. Thus, learners may improve their English-speaking skills if they are guided through the process of developing coherence in context using various categories of textual markers.

Given the significant global influence of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (CEFR) on English language education, this study deals with aligning a university's academic reading tests to the CEFR. It aimed at validating the test construct of the academic reading tests in relation to the proficiency levels defined by the CEFR. The study employs two standard setting procedures outlined in the CEFR Manual: the Familiarization procedure and the Specification procedure, to explore the CEFR level of the academic reading tests as well as the prominent characteristics of the reading texts and the test items in terms of their level and key features. Three academic reading tests were randomly selected. The CEFR Content Analysis Grid for Reading was employed to characterize the content of test items and test tasks. The results indicated that 9 out of 18 reading texts were estimated to correspond to the B2 CEFR level. Texts estimated as B1 and C1 levels were evenly distributed, and none of the reading texts were classified as A1 or C2 levels. Moreover, the findings demonstrated a significant prevalence of B2 and B1 level items. Specifically, B2 items represented the largest proportion at 31.88%, closely followed by B1 items at 25.12%.

Self-Directed Informal Digital Learning of English (SD-IDLE) plays a crucial role in informal language learning. This study aims to examine the SD-IDLE nature of English learning among Indonesian university students and its impact on language learning and personal development. The research used a sequential explanatory mixed methods design, employing a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews as research tools. Data were collected from 302 Indonesian university students enrolled in various EFL classes at three universities. The study revealed that the nature of SD-IDLE activities was significantly associated with the English proficiency of EFL students, although the results for each component varied. The nature of self-management and monitoring activities showed a significant positive correlation with students' English proficiency, while the nature of self-motivation activities displayed a negative correlation. In conclusion, students who actively engaged in the nature of SD-IDLE activities such as good goal commitment, resource needs, metacognition, and broad social communication needs demonstrated higher English proficiency. However, students who relied solely on motivation did not consistently achieve successful English proficiency scores.
