4. Some Effects of Bilingualism on Perception. Ohio State University Working Papers on Linguistics, No. 22.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of an experiment designed to investigate some of the effects of bilingualism on perception. The subjects were Icelandic monolinguals and Icelandic-English bilinguals. The phonetic parameter under investigation was duration. The experiment was designed to test which of the following three hypotheses accurately predict the perceptual responses of bilinguals: (1) the null hypothesis (predicting no interference between the two languages); (2) the awareness hypothesis (predicting more accurate perception in bilinguals); and (3) the confusion hypothesis (predicting less accurate perception in bilinguals). A listening test was administered which consisted of stimuli based on the minimal pair "is" [i:s] and "iss" [is:]. Findings include the following: (1) vowel length is a more salient clue than consonant length in the perception of the quantity opposition; (2) significant support is found for the third hypothesis which predicts confusion in the perception of the bilinguals; and (3) there is a significant difference in the perception of the quantity system of Icelandic between monolingual and bilingual native speakers of the language. 6. A Sociolinguistic Glance at the Great Vowel Shift of English. Papers in Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics. Working Papers in Linguistics, No. 22.

Abstract

Evidence exists that, in the past, phonetic variants functioned as sociolinguistic variables, just as they do today, at least in societies with comparable stratificational patterns. This paper presents the significant details of the sociolinguistic environment within which the beginnings of the Great English Vowel Shift were embedded. An attempt is made to demonstrate how an understanding of the sociolinguistic situation surrounding historic changes leads to an understanding of the transition from earlier to later pronunciations. It is demonstrated that: (1) contemporaneous changes in the social and linguistic profiles of England during the 14th century led to a situation in which two regional dialects were juxtaposed and realigned as social dialects; and (2) the different phonological histories of the convergent dialects provided the raw material for sociolinguistic variation at that particular time, when older sociolinguistic barriers were disintegrating in England. It is hypothesized that the type of cross-dialectal phonological restructuring that has been observed in contemporary settings would have led to the initial phase of the Great Vowel Shift as a matter of course, given the phonetic variation and socio-dialectal alignment pattern that have been reconstructed for Early Fifteenth Century London English. 7. Phonological Variation in Children's Speech: The Trade-Off Phenomenon. Papers in Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics. Working Papers in Linguistics, No. 22.

Abstract

A question of both theoretical and practical importance for the study of phonological development is whether there is a difference in the status of productions rendered spontaneously by the child and those repeated by the child after either an adult model or his own production. The relevant theoretical questions are: (1) Are all the child's productions mediated by his current phonological system? (2) What is the role of the adult model in phonological acquisition? The spontaneous and repeated utterances of four children were examined, and it was found that there were differences between the spontaneous and echoic forms produced. The child's productions immediately following those of the adult did not necessarily approach the model more closely than did spontaneous productions. In certain cases a "trade-off" occurred, i.e., a sound segment in an echoic form more closely approached the model while another sound segment fell short of the target. This suggests that echoic and other repeated forms are not "phonologically progressive," as had been proposed. (Author/CFM)

8. Some Prosodic Characteristics of Speech to Young Children. Papers in Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics. Working Papers in Linguistics, No. 22.

Abstract

This study investigated the linguistic characteristics of speech addressed to the child and the features of the verbal environment critical for learning language. The study focused on the prosodic and paralinguistic features of adult speech to the young child. Adult speech directed to children was compared to other kinds of systematic speech adjustments adults make in response to differing social situations. Speech samples of 24 mothers addressing their children were analyzed. The mean age of one half of the group of 24 children was two years, three months; the mean age of the other half was five years, four months. The adult speaker made a systematic adjustment in the prosodic and paralinguistic aspects of speech addressed to the young child, and these adjustments varied in relation to the age of the child listener. It is suggested that various features of the baby talk register can serve at least two functions, analytic and social. (Author/SW)

9. Phonological Differentiation of a Bilingual Child. Papers in Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics. Working Papers in Linguistics, No. 22.

Abstract

This study is a detailed analysis of the phonological development of Sylvia, a bilingual child, in her acquisition of American English and Brazilian Portuguese from the age of 1 year, 7 months to 3 years, 8 months. The study is divided into four stages: ages 1.7 - 1.9; 1.9 - 2.1; 2.1 - 2.3; and 2.3 - 2.8. Up to the age of 1.9, the same phonological substitutions applied to Sylvia's production of phonetically identical segments in both English and Portuguese. After the age of 1.9, phonological differentiation developed, and with it a distinct set of substitutions became associated with each language. Although this study involves only one child, it does suggest that child phonology can reveal significant things about the adult system. It also suggests that the two languages have quite different trends for future change. Evidence for this can be found from dialect comparisons as well as from Sylvia's different treatment of the two languages. Perhaps a language's tendency toward a specific type of change is governed by a language specific speech posture and a specific set of phonological processes which is a natural consequence of such a posture. Hinrichs), concerning the interaction of feature instantiation principles and linear precedence statements in several European languages; "The Syntax of Conditional Sentences" (Michael L. Geis), presenting the syntactic side of general theory of syntax of English conditionals; and "German Adjective Agreement in Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar" (Arnold M. Abstract

This collection of working papers contains four papers on varied topics in lintuistic theory. The first paper, "Some Grammatical Correlates of Felicity Conditions and Presuppositions," attempts to show that there is a systematic relationship between what a speaker of a language does in uttering sentences of that language and the syntactic form of those utterances. The second paper is the translation of a Russian article on the typology of causative construction. The article presents the study of a universal classificatory schema which would be appropriate in different languages. The third paper considers why sound change is gradual and discusses the factors and processes involved. The final paper explores the feasibility of the basic idea of natural phonology and considers whether the restrictions on inventories of underlying phonological segments are due to processes rather than abstract hierarchies or morpheme structure constraints. 12. The Strategic Content of Island Constraints. Working Papers in Linguistics No. 13.

Abstract

This dissertation seeks to provide an improved syntactic analysis of the phenomena known as "island constraints" and to offer a natural explanation for these and other phenomena in behavioral terms. The author approaches the problem using the notions of "nucleus" and "satellite," and shows that these concepts are a necessary part of a descriptively adequate grammatical theory. The behavioral principles seen to be at work are erroneous closure, interrupted behavior, and perceptual conflict. The author presents a reanalysis of three constraints (the complex noun-phrase constraint, the coordinate structure constraint, and a third constraint involving adverbials) and uses the behavioral principles listed above to propose explanations for the main island constraints under consideration. "The Independent Development of Mid Tone in Suma" (Mary Bradshaw) extends earlier research on tone change in Gbaya languages to Suma, a Gbaya language previously not included. "Diachronic Morphology: An Overview" (Brian Joseph) reviews diachronic morphological theory, focusing on what is mutable and what is stable in morphology, where morphology comes from, what triggers morphological change, and whether or not a general theory of morphological change is possible. "Divergence of Syntactic Frames and Diachronic Change" (Hyeree Kim) examines syntactic frames governed by the so-called impersonal verb in Old English and Middle English. "The Emergence of Creole Copulas: Evidence from Belize Creole" (Bettina Migge) offers evidence in support of a theory of the emergence and development of two Caribbean English Creole copulas using natural synchronic data from Belize Creole. "The Diachronic Fragmentation of Modal 'by' in Ukrainian" (Halyna Sydorenko) identifies five distinct manifestations of the modal in modern Ukranian, and also points to overlap in form and function, suggesting that the manifestations represent a morphological constellation. Abstract

This volume contains the proceedings of the symposium on African language, culture and society held at Ohio State University. Six of the papers deal with the related issues of language reform and language planning, including such aspects as the choice of national and official languages. They include both general proposals for theoretical models as well as specific proposals for particular linguistic situations. Topics covered in the 12 papers in the second part of the volume include co-variation in social and linguistic patterns, an overview of creole speech communities and the typologies proposed for their description, the encoding of cultural perspectives in linguistic patterns and the importance of understanding these patterns for education, and the role of language in literature, with particular attention to the writings of African authors writing in European languages.
