The COVID-19 pandemic has presented significant challenges for businesses worldwide. Those who recognised the importance of an online presence and transformed their traditional business model into a digital one were better equipped to mitigate the pandemic's negative impacts. However, there is a lack of research on the differences in digital transformation between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large firms, as well as the main factors driving this transformation. This paper aims to address this gap by examining the successful digital transformation among these groups (SMEs and Large firms) in the province of New Brunswick, Canada, as a case study. The study uses secondary data from the TechImpact survey to explore the primary factors of this shift for both SMEs and large firms. The study confirms the critical factors identified in the literature, while also revealing new factors specific to each group. For SMEs, these include adopting a digital business model, investing in low-budget social media and e-marketing, recruiting young digital experts, and accessing government grants and subsidies. For large firms, the factors include implementing mass customisation through online channels, providing remote work incentives, using a comprehensive content management system, and prioritising electronic customer relationship management and e-loyalty. This study investigates the relationship between strategic orientations and innovation within the Sudanese service sector: hospitality, postal, bank, education, communication, and insurance spheres. Drawing upon the resource-based view, the paper examines the influence of market, service, and learning orientations on both incremental and radical innovation. Moreover, the study explores the moderating role of technological capabilities in this relationship. A quantitative research design was employed, utilizing a convenience sample of 160 managers from various service sub-sectors in Sudan. Empirical findings reveal that market orientation, service orientation, and learning orientation have a significant effect on incremental innovation (estimates = 0.164, p = 0.00; estimates = .177, p = .014). In addition, market and service orientations demonstrate a significant relationship with technological capabilities (estimates = 0.612, p = 0.00; estimates = –.376, p = .018). Further, incremental innovation and radical innovation significantly correlated with technological capabilities (estimates = .131, p = 0.00; estimates = .365, p = 0.00), while service orientation and learning orientation do not have a significant correlation with radical innovation (estimates = .153, p =.129; estimates = .061, p = .491). Learning orientation does not have a significant correlation with technological capabilities (estimates = .168, p > .228). Furthermore, results indicate that technological capabilities do not moderate the relationship between strategic orientation and service innovation. The devastating impact of COVID-19 on businesses has led to the redefinition of workforce resilience. This study hence explores workforce resilience factors that will be important in the post-COVID-19 era. It investigates whether these factors perform differently in the manufacturing vs. the service sector and in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) vs. large firms. Sixty-five firms were studied in Malaysia and analyzed through Rasch modelling. The results indicate that three workforce resilience factors (positive thinking, sense of responsibility, and emotional control) are difficult to overcome in the manufacturing sector. Regarding the SMEs and large firm contexts, six workforce resilience factors (positive thinking, differentiation, degree of involvement, sense of responsibility, cognitive processes, and innovation) are complicated for SMEs. In comparison, two workforce resilience factors (work–life balance and decision-making) are difficult for large firms. Capitalizing on these findings, managers in various organizations (manufacturing vs. service and SMEs vs. large firms) can adopt different strategies to leverage workforce resilience post-COVID. This article explores how entrepreneurial small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) manage coopetition strategies to innovate with large firms. While coopetition offers opportunities for innovation and growth, asymmetries between SMEs and large firms can provoke unilateral actions, opportunistic tactics, and knowledge theft which can undermine SME innovation power and jeopardise coopetition success. Based on a qualitative multiple-case study of 25 coopetitive innovation projects, each involving an SME and a large firm, we find that SMEs manage these risks by pursuing a synergistic mix of three distinct coopetition strategies: (1) Co-distribution, (2) Technology licensing, and (3) R&D co-development. In each strategy, SMEs navigate different coopetition intensities by dynamically combining the principles of separation, integration, co-management and co-ownership to achieve specific innovation outcomes. Our findings suggest that SMEs shift between cooperation- and competition-dominant strategies and employ a mix of management principles to offset asymmetrical risks and maximise their innovation benefits from coopetition with large firms. Scholars and practitioners have trumpeted business intelligence (BI) capability as a game-changer due to its significant impact on firm performance. Despite these claims, the amplifying and underlying mechanisms governing the relationship between BI capability and organizational performance are still in their infancy. This research examines the nexus between BI capability, decision-making speed, comprehensiveness, and organizational performance. This study, drawing on knowledge-based theory, proposes a conceptual model to explain how BI capability influences organizational performance through decision-making speed and comprehensiveness and the moderating role of firm size. The proposed moderated-mediated model was tested using survey data from 236 respondents occupying leadership positions in various Jordanian industries. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to diagnose the proposed model. BI capability indirectly affects firm performance through decision-making speed and comprehensiveness. These mediating effects do not vary by company size. This paper contributed theoretically and practically to the BI framework considering decision-making, firm performance, and firm size. Implications for theory-building and practice are described. Overview: Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the business landscape, but limited research is available regarding how companies are responding and adapting to AI. Using dynamic capability theory, we hypothesized that companies would develop new dynamic capabilities to seize AI opportunities. Our analysis of qualitative data from six major Chinese construction companies revealed that these companies' existing dynamic capabilities are key to adopting and adapting AI technology for business model innovation. We developed a dynamic capability model that describes how companies use their existing dynamic capabilities for sensing AI, seizing AI, and transforming to leverage AI for business model innovation. Our research bridges the gap in understanding the relationship between AI adoption, existing dynamic capabilities, and AI adaptation. Integrating AI is not as daunting as it may seem. Originally developed for software development, Agile approaches are increasingly adopted by organizations that seek flexibility in the face of rapid change. However, little attention has been paid to the potential negative consequences of the implementation of Agile in large-scale settings. This article presents the results of a multi-site study of a multinational telecom company over five years during its implementation of Agile practices in the context of large-scale software development. The article points to six potential pitfalls of implementing such practices that may negatively influence individual learning, ideation, and exploitation capabilities. The prerequisite of developing countries' economic growth is to move along the technological development trajectory through technological learning, and large firms as hubs of technological knowledge, play an important role in this transition. In this paper, we tried to bridge two main taxonomies in the field of technological development, one of them referring to taxonomies of firms, and the other one referring to technological learning processes. We have identified technological learning processes in several post catch-up large firms through content analysis and then by employing a survey approach, we explore technological learning processes of Iranian large firms. The results indicate that as per scale-intensive firms in Iran, learning by doing, learning by using, learning by interacting and learning from spillovers are respectively the most important technological learning processes. Regarding large science-based firms, learning by searching, learning by interacting and learning from spillovers are the key learning processes. This study advances our understandings of gender inequality in organizations by examining the experiences of young women who leave their jobs even in the absence of family responsibilities. Based on 29 in‐depth interviews with young women who left full‐time employment at large Korean firms early in their careers, complemented by interviews with 16 men who also resigned from these companies, I find that women's experiences and decisions to quit are critically shaped by what I term militarized workplace culture and practices. The militarized workplace is a work organization where core military values and mechanisms have been integrated and are reproduced to such an extent that organizational culture is saturated with military discipline. Within the militarized workplace, rigid hierarchies and male‐only informal networks marginalize and exclude women, and norms of overwork and complete availability undermine women's aspirations of long‐term employment. By demonstrating the roles that male conscription and the military play in shaping organizational culture and its gendered outcomes, these findings provide insight into how external institutions operate as a source of gender inequality at the organizational level. We use the prolonged Greek crisis as a case study to understand how a lasting economic shock affects the innovation strategies of firms in economies with moderate innovation activities. Adopting the 3-stage CDM model, we explore the link between R&D, innovation, and productivity for different size groups of Greek manufacturing firms during the prolonged crisis. At the first stage, we find that the continuation of the crisis is harmful for the R&D engagement of smaller firms while it increased the willingness for R&D activities among the larger ones. At the second stage, among smaller firms the knowledge production remains unaffected by R&D investments, while among larger firms the R&D decision is positively correlated with the probability of producing innovation, albeit the relationship is weakened as the crisis continues. At the third stage, innovation output benefits only larger firms in terms of labor productivity, while the innovation-productivity nexus is insignificant for smaller firms during the lasting crisis. Water resources and economic growth are two preoccupations that take different senses. The overconsumption can be very costly in terms of the quantity and quality of water resources, which indulges many negative impacts on water reserves. In arid zones, institutions and large national firms are obligated to deliver more efforts in term of adaptation to the area’s hydraulic situation. In this work, we addressed the issue of integrating good governance of water resources into the decision-making process of large firms in Morocco. We studied the case of the Guemassa mine of the Managem group, located in the Tensift Haouz basin. In order to assess the efficiency of their strategy, we carried out an impact study of the company’s mining activities on the quality and quantity of the region’s waterresources and we provided key information on the hydraulic situation of the region in question. As a result, the company is monopolizing a large part of the water resources of the Haouz plain and their integrated water resource management strategy is deemed insufficient.

Objective: This study examined how large businesses negatively impact small business survival and growth in South Africa. It aims to expose harmful practices by large firms that cause small businesses to fail. Thus it seeks to challenge a commonly held assertion that larger firms are predisposed to support smaller firms to achieve growth and survival objectives. Research Design & Methods: A theoretical literature review methodology was used to conduct this study. Findings: The findings indicate that many of the threats from South African large firms targeted at small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs) emanate from the advantage of their size, market dominance, and close links the corporate business sector enjoys with the government. Implications & Recommendations: The study argues that larger firms in South Africa are as much of a catalyst for the demise of SMMEs as they can also be beneficial. Therefore it recommends an effective administration of the Competitions Act laws to protect SMMEs and develop new policies that seek to build SMMEs in their capacity and not as a complementary sector to big companies. Contribution & Value Added: The study contributes to the overall discourse about the role of the large business community in supporting the SMME sector in the country. It thus adds value towards broadening an understanding of the threats to small business survival in South Africa and finding solutions of how they can be supported to become viable.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the current state and dynamics of the innovative behavior of medium and large manufacturing firms in Peru and Ecuador. It has been shown that the factors that enhance or enable the possibilities of innovation in organizations can be internal or external. This study took a quantitative approach, and regression models were applied to samples composed of firms. The relationships between external factors and business resources following the implementation of innovation were analyzed, as was the impact that these factors had on sales performance, considering the effect of the size and age of the firms. The innovations most implemented in firms in Ecuador were processes, and in Peru, organizational innovations were predominant. There were no external factors or business resources statistically related to these types of innovation for each country. For Peruvian firms, the age of the firm presented an inverse relationship to its performance. The study confirms the results of other studies conducted in Peru, and for Ecuador, these findings represent one of the first contributions on this topic. This study contributes to the discussion of the effects, in emerging Latin American countries, of a firm's age on its ability to innovate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose – The unprecedented economic crisis in Greece deeply affected entrepreneurship, which was traditionally characterised by low levels of innovation and competitiveness, the dominant presence of micro-sized enterprises and the weak signs of prosperity in large firms. This paper, in acknowledgement of the necessary transformations that production incurred due to the crisis, attempts to detect the characteristics of large manufacturing firms that contributed to their greater resilience during the unstable period of 2011–2016 by analysing the determinants of the higher profitability of firms. The analysis shows that firms that improved their productivity and sales levels and in parallel are flexible, in the sense that they have limited amounts of both assets and liabilities and thus a small risk, are those that presented higher profits during the period under study. Initial conditions, sectoral characteristics and the broader national environment do not seem to have a strong contributive role in firms' profitability. Design/methodology/approach – The analysis follows a dynamic system generalised method of moments (GMM) estimation based on a panel data set of 125 Greek large firms over the time span 2011–2016. Findings – The analysis shows that firms that improve their productivity and sales levels and in parallel are flexible, in the sense that they have a limited amount of both assets and liabilities and thus a small risk, are those that present higher profits during the period under study. Initial conditions, sectoral characteristics and the broader national environment do not seem to have a strong contributive role in firms' profitability. Research limitations/implications – The present paper attempts to explain the performance of the most dynamic large manufacturing firms in Greece by investigating the role of some of the most important determinants of firm profitability (according to data availability), acknowledging, however, some analysis' limitations as the absence of some other parameters like the export activity or the incorporation of any innovative features in the firms Originality/value – The novelty of this paper lies in two points. First, the subject of the analysis is the large firms in Greece, which have not received much attention as Greek entrepreneurship was traditionally based on the light, labour- or resource-intensive production and the main bulk of the literature was not on that topic. Second, during the deep and protracted crisis that Greece has experienced, several production transformations have taken place that remain partly undiscovered. In this paper we aim, first, to examine how an economy's financial development affects the welfare gains from trade and, second, to uncover how large firms threaten to suppress these gains, through the exertion of market power and their confirmed preferential access to liquidity. To this purpose, we propose a theoretical model of international trade with financial constraints, which are different between large oligopolists and small monopolistic competitors. We show that trade diminishes the impact of credit misallocation and financial frictions and creates welfare gains by intensifying selection and boosting competition. We find that welfare gains are higher under harsher domestic distortions, meaning that trade particularly benefits developing economies, acting as a substitute for financial development. Nevertheless, in the shadow of large firms, gains from trade are diminished, even more so when such firms are rare and, therefore, more powerful. We conclude that international trade is a prerequisite for financial and economic development but the benefits from globalization are not fully reaped unless large-firm entry and competition are facilitated. We trust that our findings are extremely relevant for developing economies, which are often export-oriented, but, at the same time, suffer from severe credit market inefficiencies and a shortage of large incumbents. The present study aims to identify the factors affecting technological collaboration between large and technology-based firms (KBFs). In this regard, using multi-case study method, 9 collaborations cases in the period 2006 to 2016 between 3 large firms and 9 KBFs in the field of nanotechnology and biotechnology in Iran have been studied. Data gathering tool is 19 semi-structured interviews with key people of large and KBFs involved in collaborative experiences and has been done from autumn to spring 2016. the method of data analysis is through content analysis and axial codin. Based on the results, the factors affecting the collaborations are presented separately for specific challenges and drivers for large and KBFs, as well as in the field of technology. Based on the results, the factors affecting collaborations are divided into two types of specific challenges and drivers. Challenging factors include the complex procedures of large firms and the unfamiliarity of KBFs with business rules. The dominance of KBFs over technical knowledge and the access of large firms to the market have also been the main drivers of collaborations. These factors can help policymakers, large firms and KBFs to overcome challenges and strengthen the collaboration drivers.

This article examines the issue of responsible innovation in France. To describe its underlying mechanisms and logics, we retrace the advent of innovation in public policy and its reception in French firms, showing how responsible innovation has become the cornerstone of public-private interactions. The legal and administrative context of innovation in France, on the one hand, the emerging departments and managers of innovation in the large groups, on the other hand, participate in producing spaces where agents of the political and economic fields converge. Such situated interactions hinge on shared world views, values and tools. Innovation managers, executive directors of large firms, some French politicians and public servants seize upon responsible innovation and create areas regulated by specific norms and values. In these shared spaces, responsible innovation is the star object, the proxy for exchanges between the economic and the political fields.

Firms of differing sizes make FWAs available to employees, with varying performance outcomes. Research on the financial outcomes of FWAs is sparse and tends to focus on large firms. This study investigates the associations between FWAs and return on labour (ROL) as well as the relevance of these associations to small, medium and large firms, using a sample of 3244 employees working in 602 businesses. The findings show negative associations between flexible leave as FWA and ROL for all firms. Job-sharing has financial value for firms with 100 or more workers, with the majority being females but it is not feasible in small firms due to limited employee numbers. Flexible work hours pay off for firms with up to 99 employees but the financial outcomes become negative thereafter, requiring closer monitoring in larger firms. The findings indicate that firm size is relevant to FWA regulations and negotiations with implications for employers, employees and policymakers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research Summary: How can inventors in large firms navigate their organizations' innovation processes to commercialize breakthrough inventions? Using historical case studies of three breakthrough inventions at Xerox—office workstations, personal computers, and laser printers, we illustrate how inventors navigated multiple evaluation criteria across different organizational units to attract resources toward inventions. These criteria stemmed from Xerox's first successful breakthrough invention, the 914 copier and the specific objectives of the organizational units. We highlight two approaches deployed by Xerox inventors—searching across the organization for more favorable evaluation criteria and shaping the evaluation criteria to help attract resources. While searching leveraged the heterogeneity of evaluation criteria across the different organizational units, shaping required the presence of evaluative uncertainty with respect to the appropriate criteria for evaluating breakthrough inventions. Managerial Summary: The challenges of commercializing breakthrough inventions in large firms have been studied extensively through a lens of managerial decision‐making and resource allocation. This perspective has characterized the innovation process in large firms as one in which inventors confine themselves to idea generation, leaving idea commercialization to other actors, subject to organizational inertia. We develop a complementary perspective of the innovation process in which inventors may navigate organizational inertia by going beyond idea generation to attracting resources toward commercializing their breakthrough inventions. By offering a novel account of how inventors at Xerox navigated multiple evaluation criteria to commercialize their inventions, the study sheds light on an important yet overlooked aspect of the innovation process in large firms that can facilitate the commercialization of breakthrough inventions. Carefully examining the site map of a firm with a well-developed website can provide both patterns about its corporate strategy– considering all the elements that surround the organization – and a primary source for benchmarking. Our paper's aim is to use this technique: (a) to highlight the key strategic management issues which affect the top large Spanish firms; and (b) to show trends identified amongst such companies during the last ten years. Our methodology consists of a content analysis focused on websites of the Ibex35 companies listed on the Spanish Stock Market. It includes drawing a comparison with these same websites as two photos with a difference of ten years. Rather than carrying out a breakdown of the businesses developed by each corporation, the appropriate approach is the assessment of their respective corporate principles, as this would allow for a better identification of the underlying managerial, organisational and strategic realities of these organisations. The results evidence the high usefulness of this technique when it comes to detecting the most significant strategic management issues faced by the leading large Spanish firms, as well as their evolution over time. This paper compares effort levels of workers from small and medium/large firms. Generally, smaller firms pay lower wages, have higher turnover rate and offer less employment protection, aspects that can influence work effort. Therefore, through a data panel on the Brazilian labor market from 2005 to 2015, different econometric models (RE probit model and Mundlak–Chamberlain model) and using two proxies (sub-remuneration and absence) for measurement, we analyzed whether workers of small firms demonstrate higher working effort than workers of medium/large firms and whether such differences remained after job switch among firms. Results indicate that: (1) workers of small firms are more dedicated to work; (2) workers who switched jobs from a small to a medium/large firm experienced change in behavior, for variable sub-remuneration; (3) switching jobs did not alter working effort for variable absence, as workers remained on a superior level to those employed in small/large firms throughout the research. A firm's choice to practice corporate social responsibility (CSR) is commonly explained using insights from institutional theory or stakeholder management. However, we do not know how important external pressures are at the executive level and individual manager level in a firm's choice to engage in particular CSR activities. Nor do we know how important these external pressures are in comparison with other attributes of CSR activities that can influence this choice, such as costs or expected returns of an activity. Finally, we do not know whether all firms respond in the same way to these influences. Hence, we ask the following: How do the outcomes and pressures for a CSR activity influence the choice of that particular activity by different classes of large basic needs industry firms? Using a choice experiment, we study the CSR activities of 402 firms in the energy, packaged foods, and pharmaceutical industries. We demonstrate that expected outcomes, rather than institutions or stakeholders, drive the choice of an activity. Firms invest differing amounts of funds into a particular activity. Although institutions and stakeholders explain the overall CSR strategy of the firm, they do not explain their choices for specific activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The institution-based view brings considerable continuity to family-firm research. It also offers significant novelty in helping resolve some puzzles. Specifically, it answers why the Berle and Means hypothesis on the “inevitability” of separation of ownership and control has not received support in many parts of the world. Two cornerstones of empirical and policy analysis of firms, in macro, labor and industrial organization, are the determinants of the firm size distribution and the determinants of sorting between workers and firms. We propose a unifying theory of production where management resolves a tradeoff between hiring more versus better workers. The span of control or size is therefore intimately intertwined with the sorting pattern. We provide a condition for sorting that captures this tradeoff between the quantity and quality of workers and that generalizes Becker's sorting condition. A system of differential equations determines the equilibrium allocation, the firm size, and wages, and allows us to characterize the allocation of the quality and quantity of labor to firms of different productivity. We show that our model nests a large number of widely used existing models. We also augment the model to incorporate labor market frictions in the presence of sorting with large firms. The aim of this study is to determine a factorial structure of the antecedents of successful of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. Data were collected from large Chilean companies. The results indicate that the antecedents of success can be reduced to three dimensions: organization, project, and people, all that accounts for 74.4% of the variance extracted and have high levels of reliability. Additionally, an analysis of mean difference indicates that there are statistically significant differences for the project dimension associated with the years of system operation. Moreover, most of the participants in the study indicate that all factors are important for the success of the ERP, highlighting those associated with the organization dimension. Among them are: having effective communication, training in the use of the system, staff participation, and that implementation is consistent with business strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes the particular conditions in which administrative careers for women develop at largeArgentine companies. It is based on a qualitative study conducted at eight global companies based in Buenos Aires, at which were interviewed managers of various ages, genders and levels. The intention was to understand the unequal conditions that women experience in managerial positions, the specific characteristics of a managerial career and the “glass ceiling” that separates them from the top of the organization.

Mutual growth in the relation between large firms and small-medium enterprises (SMEs) has been an important issue that can be overcome with the concept of open innovation, which is the most continuous research topic in technology innovation. However, most previous studies on open innovation barely analyse both firm types, focusing only on one party. The aim of this study is to develop open innovation models for complementary cooperation between both types of firms in manufacturing industry. Based on a basic understanding of open innovation in each firm type, this study suggests open innovation typology with two main concepts of open innovation: knowledge interaction and technology innovation. Finally, open innovation models are developed, considering the cooperative participants, their relationships in open innovation processes, and open innovation activities illustrated through case studies. Recently, the importance of working capital management has been the subject of intense focus. Firms require efficient working capital management to ensure that their operations remain continuously profitable, which further increases shareholder wealth. The aim of this paper is to provide evidence regarding the determinants of working capital management among small and large firms listed on the Bursa Malaysia stock exchange. Secondary data from 2009-2013 was analyzed using Stata12 software. Results of random effects model demonstrate that firm leverage, firm performance, capital expenditure, operating cash flow, executive compensation and economic conditions are the most significant factors that affect working capital management.
