Abstract: In this paper Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy has been applied for determining the elemental composition of a set of ancient bronze artworks coming from archaeological site of Minervino Murge — Southern of Italy (dated around VII b.C.). Before carrying on the analysis of the archaeological samples, the characterization of the analytical technique has been accomplished by investigating the trueness of the typical assumptions adopted in LIBS, such as Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium, congruent ablation and plasma homogeneity. With this purpose, two different laser pulse durations, 7 ns and 350 fs, have been used. We have focused our attention on LIBS analysis of bronze standards by considering and discussing the bases of both methodology and analytical approach to be followed for the analysis of ancient copper-based-alloy samples. Unexpectedly, regardless from the laser pulse duration, the LIBS technique has shown, by considering an adequate approach on the emitting plasma features, that its peculiarities are anyway preserved so that a fast analysis of ancient copper-based-alloys can be achieved. After verifying the suitability of the methodology, it has been possible to fulfill the typical assumptions considered for the LIBS calibration curves method and use it for ancient bronze artworks analysis. Double-pulse laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (DP-LIPS) is applied to submerged targets to investigate its feasibility for elemental analysis. The role of experimental parameters, such as inter-pulse delay and detection time, has been discussed in terms of the dynamics of the laser-induced bubble produced by the first pulse and its confinement effect on the plasma produced by the second laser pulse. The analytical performance of this technique applied to targets in a water environment are discussed. The elemental analysis of submerged copper alloys by DP-LIPS has been compared with conventional (single-pulse) LIBS in air. In this paper the flexibility of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has been proved for the analysis of water solutions. The plasma is generated directly in the bulk of a water solution by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (1064). The emission signal of four different solutions has been studied: AlCl3, NaCl, CaCO3 and LiF. The basic mechanisms influencing the emission signal and the experimental tricks for the optimization of the detection mode have been pointed out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper focuses on the interpretation of the origin of the continuum radiation in Laser Induced Plasma (LIP) emission spectra, a subject that has received little consideration in the literature when compared to the analysis of the line emission spectrum. The understanding of the spectral peculiarities observed immediately after the laser pulse, when the continuum radiation prevails on discrete emission lines, can be extremely important to retrieve the initial conditions of LIP and to correlate the produced plasma to the ablation mechanism. In this work, in addition to a qualitative interpretation of the LIP continuum in the initial stage of expansion, a methodology is proposed for a better measurement of the atomic temperature in the expansion stage of the LIP. Such methodology is based on the analysis of the combined Boltzmann and Planck plots. The results obtained stress once again the importance of considering non equilibrium effects in the initial stage of LIP expansion. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) technique, the existence of Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) is the essential requisite for meaningful application of theoretical Boltzmann–Maxwell and Saha–Eggert expressions that relate fundamental plasma parameters and concentration of analyte species. The most popular criterion reported in the literature dealing with plasma diagnostics, and usually invoked as a proof of the existence of LTE in the plasma, is the McWhirter criterion [R.W.P. McWhirter, in: Eds. R.H. Huddlestone, S.L. Leonard, Plasma Diagnostic Techniques, Academic Press, New York, 1965, pp. 201–264]. However, as pointed out in several papers, this criterion is known to be a necessary but not a sufficient condition to insure LTE. The considerations reported here are meant to briefly review the theoretical analysis underlying the concept of thermodynamic equilibrium and the derivation of the McWhirter criterion, and to critically discuss its application to a transient and non-homogeneous plasma, like that created by a laser pulse on solid targets. Specific examples are given of theoretical expressions involving relaxation times and diffusion coefficients, as well as a discussion of different experimental approaches involving space and time-resolved measurements that could be used to complement a positive result of the calculation of the minimum electron number density required for LTE using the McWhirter formula. It is argued that these approaches will allow a more complete assessment of the existence of LTE and therefore permit a better quantitative result. It is suggested that the mere use of the McWhirter criterion to assess the existence of LTE in laser-induced plasmas should be discontinued. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
