Abstract

Alexandrite crystal is a broadband tunable laser crystal with long fluorescence lifetime and wide absorption bandwidth. It also has great mechanical strength as well as great thermo-mechanical properties. The first Alexandrite laser was developed in the 1970s, and it was the first solid-state wavelength-tunable laser that was able to operate at room temperature. It has been widely used in a variety of application fields including high-resolution spectroscopy, remote sensing, non-linear optics, radar, electro-optical countermeasure and skin treatment. Different methods have been applied to generate femtosecond pulses, including Kerr-lens mode-locking (KML), Quantum-dot (Q-dot) Saturable Absorber Mirror (SESAM), and monolayer graphene saturable absorber. The shortest pulse achieved so far was 65 fs. In this article, first, the main crystal characteristics, thermal characteristics and spectral characteristics of Alexandrite crystals are introduced. Then, the current development of ultrafast mode-locked Alexandrite lasers is reviewed. Abstract

An Yb:CALGO solid-state mode-locked laser based on gold nanoparticles saturable absorbers (GNPs-SAs) is realized with the output pulse width of sub-100 fs. In our work, GNPs are synthesized by the Turkevich methods with good uniformity. The GNP is employed as SA in the X-type resonator Yb:CALGO laser. The shortest pulse of 91 fs with the central wavelength of 1065.1 nm and a spectral width of 13 nm is obtained under the pump power of 800 mW. And the maximum output power and repetition rate are 51 mW and 96.82 MHz, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest pulse ever reported in all solid-state lasers by employing GNPs as the SA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• First demonstration of NIR femtosecond Pr solid-state laser of any type. • Double-sided symmetric dispersion arrangement by introducing a triple set of GTIs. • The Pr:YLF crystal is pumped by a single blue laser-diode. • 915-nm ultrafast pulse of 451 fs width at a repetition rate of 85.5 MHz. • This Pr laser has an average output power of 257 mW and a pulse energy of 3 nJ. Femtosecond pulse generation from diode-pumped praseodymium (Pr) lasers in the near-infrared has been a long pursuit for the optics community. Utilizing the Pr:LiYF 4 crystal in a novel dispersion arrangement scheme that includes a set of triple Gires-Tournois interferometer mirrors, mode-locked ultrashort pulses as short as 451 fs at 915 nm have been achieved when the crystal is directly pumped by a blue laser-diode. The pulse energy is 3 nJ and peak power is 7.2 kW at the repetition rate of 85.5 MHz. This is the first demonstration of diode-pumped Pr lasers arriving the femtosecond regime.
