The great potential of high‐intensity lasers to generate quantum beams for material analysis is highlighted by introducing some representative examples, including laser electron acceleration for ultrafast electron diffraction/deflectometry and laser terahertz surface wave generation. We have demonstrated that short electron pulses can be generated by intense femtosecond laser pulses. The pulse duration is as short as 100 fs, which is superior to that obtained using conventional accelerators. These short electron pulses are applicable to not only to the study of materials but also the observation of laser–matter interaction phenomena. © 2021 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
