In this paper, we present simple demonstrations aimed at explaining the fundamental principles of the photoacoustic effect. To display the audible phenomenon that occurs as laser radiation gets absorbed by ethene gas, an optical chopper was used to modulate the power of a continuous-wave laser whose beam was directed into a gas. The absorbed pulses of laser light resulted in time, harmonic, temperature, and pressure perturbations that excited the resonator, eliciting an acoustic response at its fundamental resonance frequency and harmonics. Multiple variables were changed to determine their effect on the photoacoustic signal and to replicate similar factors that influence the tones produced by musical instruments. Videos of the oscilloscope were recorded for various musical notes and then assembled into a combined demonstration video. This demonstration can be used to generate greater interest in the sciences as well as explain fundamental concepts that are at work in this experiment to students. The results of the student survey in General Chemistry 2 lectures show that the demonstration videos were useful resources.

Possibly the greatest irony of physics education is the difficulty of demonstrating optics in a visible way. The two most common solutions to this conundrum are to either use "all-inclusive" optical apparatuses, like a large-format camera, or to rely on classic ray-tracing diagrams. While the former looks elegant while demonstrating the inverted nature of its images at the front of a classroom, its inner workings and method of inverting remain mysterious. The mechanics of the latter are more evident but are limited to two dimensions and the willingness of students to accept the drawing as fact. More advanced solutions include computer modeling of 3D optics or benchtop ray-tracing demonstrations, but between these the demonstrator effectively trades a third dimension for verisimilitude. A more encompassing solution would be a means to trace rays in three dimensions through a variety of optical devices. Previously, the rub has been identifying a viable point source of rays for classroom demonstrations. In this paper, we present such a source and several sequences of demonstrations utilizing it. Traditionally, the standard method to produce a point source of rays is to mask a well-defined source, such as an FCR lamp. Masks can be as complicated as an opaque sphere with evenly spaced holes or as simple as the classic inverted colander. In all cases, these demonstrations are typically limited to only being used as rough examples of sources due to limitations in portability, homogeneity of rays, or simply total number of rays. Our recommended ray source provides hundreds of rays that are bright and uniformly distributed enough to perform geometric optics demonstrations, such as collimation, telescopes, and parabolic reflections.

The split‐and‐delay unit (SDU) at FLASH2 will be upgraded to enable the simultaneous operation of two temporally, spatially and spectrally separated probe beams when the free‐electron laser undulators are operated in a two‐color scheme. By means of suitable thin filters and an optical grating beam path a wide range of combinations of photon energies in the spectral range from 150 eV to 780 eV can be chosen. In this paper, simulations of the spectral transmission and performance parameters of the filter technique are discussed, along with a monochromator with dispersion compensation presently under construction. This paper focuses on minimizing the optical reflection on spherical fused silica lenses using femtosecond (fs) laser nanostructuring. A unique type of nanopillar formation has been observed on SiO 2 surfaces possessing antireflective properties when irradiated with a specific number of overlapping pulses, polarization, and fluence levels. Maintaining precise control over these sensitive technological parameters such as defocus and incident angle during the processing of geometrically complex shapes presents a significant challenge. This study proposes a theoretical optical arrangement to address this limitation by the design of a custom scanner system optimized for curved surfaces. The paper details the optimization process of such a bent image space (inverse-hypercentric) optical system using Zemax OpticStudio. Although the practical realization of the arrangement has not been performed, simulations are conducted to prove the functionality of the concept. Furthermore, we propose a practical method for segmented structuring of spherical surfaces based on consecutive repositioning and irradiation using an industrial robotic arm. By constructing the optical model, the necessary resolution of the segmentation has been calculated for a typical F-Theta scanner system and experimental verification has been performed. High-speed, low-driving-voltage operation of multiple-quantum-well (MQW) external modulators based on the quantum-confinement Stark effect (QCSE) operating at tong wavelengths are reviewed. We discuss the design and characteristics of ultrafast intensity and phase MQW modulators that have been developed by our group and we compare them with those of other material systems end structures based on a defined figure of merit for external modulator. In addition, we discuss a new integrated tight source that enables external modulation of an in-plane DFB laser to reduce wavelength chirping and coupling loss with a laser and a modulator. We theoretically calculate the optical gain of In1-xGaxAs/InGaAsP strained quantum wells on (001) InP substrates based on strain-dependent conduction-band and valence-band structures. Using the calculated gain, we estimate threshold current density of the strained quantum-well lasers. We show that both biaxial compressive and tensile strains can lower the threshold current density by ½-1/3, and clarify the mechanism for the reduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Detection of blood group antibodies is a crucial step for blood transfusion recipients and pregnant women to prevent potentially fatal haemolytic reactions. Due to the short, non-bridging structure of such antibodies (IgG), the indirect antiglobulin test (IAT) is required, complete with a thermal incubation phase. This incubation step, where the sample must be heated to 37 °C for several minutes, has hitherto prevented chip- and paper-diagnostics from performing a complete IAT and instead required the IAT to be performed away from the patient beside in a laboratory setting with specialist equipment – significantly delaying blood transfusions. With recent laser technology for immunohaematology, a single blood droplet can be heated. This study presents a simple diagnostic where a single 15 μL droplet sits on hydrophobic PTFE film and is heated by laser. The result of the test is then determined via placement of a paper strip where passive wicking and filtration of the sample separates positive from negative results. We demonstrate that this diagnostic can accurately and sensitively detect blood group antibodies, with results quickly read by eye without further specialist equipment or training, with potential to lead to a point-of-care antibody screen. The article reports that this issue of the journal introduces a revised list of sections and subsections, designed in close collaboration with the whole editorial board. The aim of these modifications is to reflect more faithfully the wide diversity of activities covered by the journal. A new section has been introduced as "Atomic and Molecular Collisions", it covers a large range of activities, from atom/atom or atom/molecules collisions including the very active field of ultra-cold collisions in laser-cooled atomic or molecular gases, to electron scattering and molecular reactivity.

This paper introduces an autonomous robot designed for in-pipe structural health monitoring of oil/gas pipelines. This system employs a 3D Optical Laser Scanning Technical Vision System (TVS) to continuously scan the internal surface of the pipeline. This paper elaborates on the mathematical methodology of 3D laser surface scanning based on dynamic triangulation. This paper presents the mathematical framework governing the combined kinematics of the Mobile Robot (MR) and TVS. It discusses the custom design of the MR, adjusting it to use of robustized mathematics, and incorporating a laser scanner produced using a 3D printer. Both experimental and theoretical approaches are utilized to illustrate the formation of point clouds during surface scanning. This paper details the application of the simple and robust mathematical algorithm RANSAC for the preliminary processing of the measured point clouds. Furthermore, it contributes two distinct and simplified criteria for detecting defects in pipelines, specifically tailored for computer processing. Si is opaque to visible light, but transparent to infrared rays. Therefore, when the infrared laser is focused inside Si, the focal portion becomes ultra-hot, forming a modified volume (Laser induced modified volume: LIMV) inside. After the laser beam is injected into the Si wafer at equal intervals (for example, 5 µm) in the cross direction, and then a force is applied from the outside. Then, cracks are formed from LIMV, and the Si wafer is divided into small pieces of 5 µm square. This is the stealth dicing (SD) technology, which is now widely used in the manufacture of semiconductor devices. In this process, clarifying the nature of LIMV is of great industrial and academic significance. The authors have been engaged in elucidating the mechanism of LIMV development by TEM observation. This phenomenon, which at first seemed extremely puzzling, was finally elucidated. In this overview, we would like to describe the process that led to this elucidation in chronological order. This paper presents a new way to demonstrate the principle behind mirages in air in the lab. The setup is simple and includes a modified laser illuminator that allows direct comparison between the deflected light rays and their straight path.

This paper presents an argumentation-based demonstration experiment to teach the light-matter interaction using an observable laser beam and vacuum pump. In the experiment, the concept of darkness was addressed using a virtual space environment created by gradually decreasing the pressure inside a quartz glass bell jar with a vacuum pump. This experimental activity, offering an evidence-based inquiry, deepened the conceptual understanding of the students in relation to the light-matter interaction and other events that occurred following the decrease in the intensity of light entering the eye, caused by the reduced pressure in the vacuum bell jar.

This paper presents a non-contact and unrestrained respiration monitoring system based on the optical triangulation technique. The proposed system consists of a red-green-blue (RGB) camera and a line laser installed to face the frontal thorax of a human body. The underlying idea of the work is that the camera and line laser are mounted in opposite directions, unlike other research. By applying the proposed image processing algorithm to the camera image, laser coordinates are extracted and converted to world coordinates using the optical triangulation method. These converted world coordinates represent the height of the thorax of a person. The respiratory rate is measured by analyzing changes of the thorax surface depth. To verify system performance, the camera and the line laser are installed on the head and foot sides of a bed, respectively, facing toward the center of the bed. Twenty healthy volunteers were enrolled and underwent measurement for 100s. Evaluation results show that the optical triangulation-based image processing method demonstrates non-inferior performance to a commercial patient monitoring system with a root-mean-squared error of 0.30rpm and a maximum error of 1rpm ( p > 0.05 ), which implies the proposed non-contact system can be a useful alternative to the conventional healthcare method., (© 2024. The active silicon cell of a solar photovoltaic (PV) panel is covered by an ethylenevinylacetate (EVA) adhesive and a protective top glass layer. Separating this glass-EVA layer from the underlying silicon represents a bottleneck for recycling PV panels. Previous work has shown that the EVA-Si bond can be weakened by applying a continuous source of heat to melt the EVA. In this paper, a new method using nanosecond laser pulses is demonstrated to induce transient melting selectively at the EVA-Si interface. This impulsive heating method can cleanly separate the glass-EVA layer from the silicon in both model and commercial multicrystalline PV panels. The dependence of this debonding on parameters like laser pulse fluence (laser pulse energy per area), wavelength, applied pressure, and scan speed were characterized. For model PV panels, the single-pulse laser fluences required for spontaneous separation of the assembly under the force of gravity, were 0.23, 0.32 and 0.78 J/cm 2 for 355 nm, 532 nm and 1064 nm, respectively. The use of shorter wavelengths reduces the laser fluence needed for debonding, while higher fluences can compensate for faster laser beam scanning rates. Optical and electron microscopy images of the Si surfaces before and after laser irradiation show that the textured antireflection layer is destroyed but the silver metal grid remains intact. The laser-based powder bed fusion of polymers (PBF-LB/P) process often utilizes a blend of powders with varying degrees of degradation. Specifically, for polyamide 12, the traditional reuse schema involves mixing post-processed powder with virgin powder at a predetermined ratio before reintroducing it to the process. Given that only about 15% of the powder is utilized in part production, and powders are refreshed in equal proportions, there arises a challenge with the incremental accumulation of material across build cycles. To mitigate the consumption of fresh powder relative to the actual material usage, this study introduces the incorporation of recycled material into the PBF-LB/P process. This new powder reuse schema is presented for the first time, focusing on the laser sintering process. The characteristics of the recycled powder were evaluated through scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, particle size distribution, and dynamic powder flowability assessments. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) and Laser-scribed graphene (LSG) are both advanced materials with significant potential in various applications, particularly in the field of sustainable sensors. The practical uses of LIG (LSG), which include gas detection, biological process monitoring, strain assessment, and environmental variable tracking, are thoroughly examined in this review paper. Its tunable characteristics distinguish LIG (LSG), which is developed from accurate laser beam modulation on polymeric substrates, and they are essential in advancing sensing technologies in many applications. The recent advances in LIG (LSG) applications include energy storage, biosensing, and electronics by steadily advancing efficiency and versatility. The remarkable flexibility of LIG (LSG) and its transformative potential in regard to sensor manufacturing and utilization are highlighted in this manuscript. Moreover, it thoroughly examines the various fabrication methods used in LIG (LSG) production, highlighting precision and adaptability. This review navigates the difficulties that are encountered in regard to implementing LIG sensors and looks ahead to future developments that will propel the industry forward. The 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic impaired global health, disrupted society, and slowed the economy. Early detection of the infection using highly sensitive diagnostics is crucial in preventing the disease's spread. In this paper, we demonstrate electrochemical sensors based on laser induced graphene (LIG) functionalized directly with gold (Au) nanostructures for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 with an outstanding limit of detection (LOD) of ∼1.2 ag·mL -1 . To achieve the optimum performance, we explored various functionalization parameters to elucidate their impact on the LOD, sensitivity, and linearity. Specifically, we investigated the effect of (i) gold precursor concentration, (ii) cross-linker chemistry, (iii) cross-linker and antibody incubation conditions, and (iv) antigen-sensor interaction (diffusion-dominated incubation vs pipette-mixing), as there is a lack of a systematic study of these parameters. Our benchmarking analysis highlights the critical role of the antigen-sensor interaction and cross-linker chemistry. We showed that pipette-mixing enhances sensitivity and LOD by more than 1.6- and 5.5-fold, respectively, and also enables multimodal readout compared to diffusion-dominated incubation. Moreover, the PBA/Sulfo-NHS: EDC cross-linker improves the sensitivity and LOD compared to PBASE. The sensors demonstrate excellent selectivity against other viruses, including HCoV-229E, HCoV-OC43, HCoV-NL63, and influenza H5N1. Beyond the ability to detect antigen fragments, our sensors enable the detection of antigen-coated virion mimics (which are a better representative of the real infection) down to an ultralow concentration of ∼5 particles·mL -1 .

Contamination of the environment with toxic metals such as cadmium or lead is a worldwide issue. The accumulator of metals Cannabis sativa L. has potential to be utilized in phytoremediation, which is an environmentally friendly way of soil decontamination. Novel non-thermal plasma-based technologies may be a helpful tool in this process. Plasma activated water (PAW), prepared by contact of gaseous plasma with water, contains reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, which enhance the growth of plants. In this study, C. sativa was grown in a short-term toxicity test in a medium which consisted of plasma activated water prepared by dielectric barrier discharge with liquid electrode and different concentrations of cadmium or lead. Application of PAW on heavy metal contaminated C. sativa resulted in increased growth under Pb contamination as was determined by ecotoxicology tests. Furthermore, the PAW influence on the bioaccumulation of these metals as well as the influence on the nutrient composition of plants was studied primarily by applying Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The LIBS elemental maps show that C. sativa accumulates heavy metals mainly in the roots. This study analyzed pollutant emissions from laser cutters used in modeling in a laboratory, which can have harmful effects on indoor air quality and health. Four conditions were tested: material thickness, laser cutter strength, minimum strength per thickness, and air purifier level. Four pollutants were analyzed: PM 2.5 , HCHO, VOCs, and CO 2 . The study found that the emissions of PM 2.5 , HCHO, and VOCs increased with paperboard thickness, while CO 2 emissions were not significant. PM 2.5 was more affected by laser cutting strength, while HCHO and VOCs were more affected by paperboard thickness. Additionally, we analyzed the PM 2.5 emission rates based on the thickness of the paperboard and the laser cutting strength. Therefore, emission rates based on thickness and laser cutting strength ranged from 7275 to 18,783 μg/min. The air purifier significantly reduced PM 2.5 but not HCHO and VOCs. To reduce these gaseous pollutants, combining mechanical ventilation or using an air purifier with a filter that adsorbs HCHO and VOCs is effective. The welding effect of the laser on skin tissue is reduced by thermal damage to skin tissue, and greater thermal damage to skin tissue caused by the laser is prevented by predicting thermal damage. In this paper, a finite element model is established for the temperature field of skin tissue scanned by a femtosecond laser to obtain the influence of laser process parameters and scanning path on the thermal damage parameters of skin tissue and the thermal damage area, and verified experimentally. The results show that the established finite element model is accurate and can accurately reflect the temperature distribution during the process of femtosecond laser welding of porcine skin tissues; used to predict the thermal damage parameters of the skin tissues and the thermal damage area; and provide guidance for the study of the femtosecond laser welding of the skin tissues process to obtain the optimal process parameters., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Faced with the increasing prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), portable monitoring of CKD-related biomarkers such as potassium ion (K + ), creatinine (Cre), and lactic acid (Lac) levels in sweat has shown tremendous potential for early diagnosis. However, a rapidly manufacturable portable device integrating multiple CKD-related biomarker sensors for ease of sweat testing use has yet to be reported. Here, a portable electrochemical sensor integrated with multifunctional laser-induced graphene (LIG) circuits and laser-printed nanomaterials based working electrodes fabricated by fully automatic laser manufacturing is proposed for non-invasive human kidney function monitoring. The sensor comprises a two-electrode LIG circuit for K + sensing, a three-electrode LIG circuit with a Kelvin compensating connection for Cre and Lac sensing, and a printed circuit board based portable electrochemical workstation. The working electrodes containing Cu and Cu 2 O nanoparticles fabricated by two-step laser printing show good sensitivity and selectivity toward Cre and Lac sensing. The sensor circuits are fabricated by generating a hydrophilic-hydrophobic interface on a patterned LIG through laser.
