Traditional distributed feedback (DFB) or distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) lasers typically have commonly employed buried gratings as frequency-selective optical feedback mechanisms. However, the fabrication of such gratings often requires regrowth processes, which introduce significant technical challenges, particularly for material systems such as GaAs and GaSb. While metal gratings have been implemented in GaSb-based lasers, they incur additional absorption losses, thereby constraining the device's efficiency and achievable output power. Herein, we introduce a laterally coupled dielectric Bragg grating structure, which enables highly controllable, deterministic, and stable coupling between the grating and the optical mode. Our device demonstrates a continuous-wave output power of 47.02 mW at room temperature, exhibiting stable single-mode operation from 300 to 1000 mA and a maximum side mode suppression ratio of 46.7 dB. These results underscore the innovative lateral coupled dielectric grating as a feasible and technologically superior approach for fabricating DFB and DBR lasers, which hold universal applicability across different material platforms and wavelength bands. The study shows that, in waveguide (WG) configuration, the coupling of a 2D plasmonic metamaterial grating (MMG) having a conventional Bragg period along the guide but a distinct period along the transverse axis can lead to Electromagnetically‐Induced‐Transparency (EIT) behavior. This epitomizes that metamaterials, as functional photonic building blocks, can lead to low losses in many standard devices if properly designed. The study reported the observation in passive WGs of a marked Fano‐type EIT resonance with record high‐quality factor: Q = 5000 and contrast >20 dB. Unlike any standard metal grating, MMG‐assisted waveguides exhibit strong grating coupling strength and low‐loss properties simultaneously. This concept is further applied to demonstrate single‐frequency‐emission electrically‐injected Distributed Feedback (DFB) lasers in the near‐infrared telecom domain. The key point is that laser emission occurs at the peak of EIT, i.e., the maximum in transmission. It therefore addresses one of the main critical issues of DFB lasers related to the single frequency yield. The laser performances are state‐of‐the‐art (Ith < 20 mA, Pmax > 20 mW at I = 200 mA, SMSR > 50 dB, optical feedback tolerance >−21 dB compliant with IEEE 802.3 standard). Lasing in the bad-cavity regime has promising applications in quantum precision measurement and frequency metrology due to the reduced sensitivity of the laser frequency to cavity-length fluctuations. Thus far, relevant studies have been mainly focused on conventional cavities whose finesse is high enough that the resonance linewidth is sufficiently narrow compared to the cavity's free spectral range, though still in the bad-cavity regime. However, lasing output from the cavity whose finesse is close to the limit of 2 has never been experimentally accessed. Here, we demonstrate an extremely bad-cavity laser, analyze the physical mechanisms limiting cavity finesse, and report on the worst-ever laser cavity with finesse reaching 2.01. The optical cavity has a reflectance close to zero and only provides weak optical feedback. The laser power can be as high as tens of μW and the spectral linewidth reaches a few kHz, over one thousand times narrower than the gain bandwidth. In addition, the measurement of cavity pulling reveals a pulling coefficient of 0.0148, the lowest value ever achieved for a continuous-wave laser. Our findings open up an unprecedentedly innovative perspective for future new ultra-stable lasers, which could possibly trigger future discoveries in optical clocks, cavity QED, continuous-wave superradiant laser, and explorations of quantum many-body physics. A method for generating bandwidth-enhanced chaotic laser with time-delay signature suppression by a microring resonator is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. Through multiple beam interference effect and nonlinear effect within a microring resonator, chaotic laser generated by conventional optical feedback is optimized. A chaotic laser with the standard bandwidth of 26.5 GHz, the spectrum flatness of ±1.5 dB, and the time-delay signature value of 0.09 is obtained. The influence of the injection power and the frequency detuning on the optimized characteristics of chaotic laser are analyzed. The results show that chaotic laser with the standard bandwidth above 20 GHz and the spectrum flatness below ±3.5 dB can be achieved simultaneously in wide operating parameter regions. Furthermore, the effect of the radius of a microring resonator on the characteristics of the chaotic laser is investigated. The results show that a microring resonator can realize the performance optimization of chaotic laser. Due to the decreased loss, the time-delay signature suppression is better as the radius of a microring resonator increases. In this paper, an analysis of performance acceleration of an external laser source (ELS) model based polymer fiber gratings (PFGs) by reducing the turn-on delay time (TDelay) is successfully investigated numerically by optimizing model parameters. In contrast to all previous studies that relied either on approximate or experimental equations, the analysis was based on an exact numerical formula. The analysis is based on the investigation of the effect of diode injected current (Iin j), temperature (T), recombination rate coefficients (i.e. Anr, B, and C), and optical feedback (OFB) level. An external-cavity laser with resonant optical feedback is a common and mature method to achieve narrow linewidth lasers. Since the proposal of optical feedback in 1964, a series of studies on resonant optical feedback have been reported. Although longer feedback length leads to narrower linewidth, it also introduces coupling of environmental noise and causes instability in the laser cavity, which is detrimental to high-speed tuning of the laser wavelength. With such a challenge, current research on resonant optical feedback primarily focuses on the static results of laser linewidth compression. In order to obtain narrow linewidth high-speed tuned external-cavity lasers, further research on the laser dynamics is required to obtain dynamic tuning of narrow linewidth external-cavity lasers. In this work, we construct an external-cavity laser based on resonant optical feedback, and utilize a coherent detection method to measure the dynamic process of laser linewidth compression and wavelength tuning. Based on resonant optical feedback from the external cavity, the linewidth of the main-cavity laser can be compressed from near 100 kHz to the 100 Hz level, with the frequency noise compressed from the order of 104 to the 102 Hz2/Hz level. Since the wavelength switching process includes frequency shift process, linewidth compression process, and frequency stabilization process, etc., we first conduct a research on laser linewidth compression dynamics. In the results of linewidth compression dynamics, we discover that using a shorter fiber ring results in shorter linewidth compression time, which is advantageous for laser dynamic tuning. We subsequently carry out the laser wavelength switching process with a main-cavity switching time in milliseconds. In the wavelength switching process, while undergoing the frequency shift process of fast tuning transient laser frequency, the laser first undergoes the linewidth broadening process, then enters the main-cavity laser frequency stabilization process and undergoes the linewidth compression process at the same time. The experimental results show that the 100 m feedback fiber ring will not significantly increase the external-cavity laser wavelength switching time under the condition that linewidth compression is faster than main-cavity laser switching, while a longer fiber ring will introduce a strong noise. Our work experimentally demonstrates that shorter feedback ring lengths lead to faster compression, which provides valuable insights for the development of high-speed and high-precision tunable narrow linewidth external-cavity lasers. Nonlinear dynamics at mid-infrared wavelength is of interest for various applications but has been mainly limited to quantum cascade lasers so far. In this article, we show that interband cascade lasers can generate complex optical chaos with bandwidth in the GHz range and this outperforms the performances of quantum cascade laser chaos. The chaos nature of our signal is confirmed by a thorough time-series analysis. Modeling of the semiconductor laser under short-cavity external optical feedback allows confirming the high bias chaos operation that we observe experimentally. Time-delayed optical feedback is known to trigger a wide variety of complex dynamical behavior in semiconductor lasers. Adding a second optical feedback loop is naturally expected to further increase the complexity of the system and its dynamics, but due to interference between the two feedback arms, it was also quickly identified as a way to improve the laser stability. While these two aspects have already been investigated, the influence of the feedback phases, i.e., sub-wavelength changes in the mirror positions, on the laser behavior still remains to be thoroughly studied, despite indications that this parameter could have a significant impact. Here, we analyze the effect of the feedback phase on the laser stability in a dual-feedback configuration. We show an increased sensitivity of the laser system to feedback phase changes when two-feedback loops are present and clarify the interplay between the frequency shift induced by the feedback and the interferometric effect between the two feedback arms. Ever since the mid-1960's, locking the phases of modes enabled the generation of laser pulses of duration limited only by the uncertainty principle, opening the field of ultrafast science. In contrast to conventional lasers, mode spacing in random lasers is ill-defined because optical feedback comes from scattering centres at random positions, making it hard to use mode locking in transform limited pulse generation. Here the generation of sub-nanosecond transform-limited pulses from a mode-locked random fibre laser is reported. Rayleigh backscattering from decimetre-long sections of telecom fibre serves as laser feedback, providing narrow spectral selectivity to the Fourier limit. The laser is adjustable in pulse duration (0.34–20 ns), repetition rate (0.714–1.22 MHz) and can be temperature tuned. The high spectral-efficiency pulses are applied in distributed temperature sensing with 9.0 cm and 3.3 × 10−3 K resolution, exemplifying how the results can drive advances in the fields of spectroscopy, telecommunications, and sensing. Pulses of adjustable duration are generated by a mode-locked random fibre laser that can drive advances in sensing. Radiative characteristics of microstripe laser diode bar in an external resonator based on an aspherical lens and a flat dielectric mirror were Investigated. The bar had total emitting aperture of 185 μm, formed by 10 stripes with a width of 6 μm separated by mesa-grooves. Operation in the external resonator of the entire emitting aperture was characterized by a multimode generation regime with a peak power of 3 W/6 A. Selection of lateral modal structures and transition to a single-mode regime is possible by limiting the number of stripes involved in optical feedback. Dependences of optical mode reconfiguration were studied by introducing limiting slits into the external cavity. It was shown that limiting the emitting aperture involved in the feedback to 65 μm allows us to demonstrate high-order single-mode operation with far-field divergence for the central lobe of 1°. High-quality silicon-based lasers are necessary to achieve full integration of photonic and electronic circuits. Monolithic integration of III–Vmicron lasers on silicon by means of the aspect ratio trapping (ART) method is a promising solution. To obtain sufficient optical feedback to excite the laser without introducing complex fabricating processes, we have designed a high-order surface grating on micron lasers which was epitaxially grown by the ART method and can be fabricated by common UV lithography. The performance of the grating was analyzed by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and eigenmode expansion (EME) solver. After simulation optimization, the etching depth was set to 0.6 μm to obtain proper reflection. The width of the slots and the slot spacing were selected to be 1.12 μm and 5.59 μm, respectively. Finally, we obtained results of 4% reflectance and 82% transmittance at a 1.55 μm wavelength at 24 periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, the dependence of the operation states, dynamics, and noise of laser diodes (LD) with external optical feedback (OFB) on the linewidth enhancement factor (LEF) and spontaneous emission factor (SEF) have been investigated. We systematically studied the classification of the laser dynamics based on the bifurcation diagrams (BDs) of the photon numbers and the relative intensity noise (RIN) spectra at different levels of OFB, LEF, and SEF. The simulation results show that variations in the LEF and SEF lead to significant changes in the laser operation states and dynamics, which vary from continuous wave (CW), pulsation, and chaos states. The Hopf bifurcation (HB) point moves toward increasing/decreasing OFB intensity by increasing/decreasing the SEF/LEF. The laser state becomes more stable through a wide range of OFB by increasing/decreasing the SEF/LEF. The RIN reduces the solitary laser noise level at higher/lower values of SEF/LEF when the laser is operated under OFB. The relaxation frequency of the laser shifts toward higher values by increasing/decreasing the SEF/LEF through most laser states, and the RIN peak is higher than solitary laser noise by four orders of magnitude, especially in the pulsation regions. In the low-frequency region, the RIN is enhanced from one to two orders by reducing the LEF and SEF through laser states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An investigation into the dynamic states and relative intensity noise of laser diodes subjected to double optical feedback has been conducted. We employed modified and improved time-delay rate equations to account for double external optical feedback. The dynamic states and noise of lasers will be investigated using bifurcation diagrams of the output photon number, its temporal variations, and the intensity noise of the laser. This analysis considers feedback strengths due to the double external cavity and their spacing from the front facet of the laser with and without phase due to feedback. The results reveal that considering phase causes significant variations in laser intensity and a phase shift in the temporal variations of the laser output. This results in relative intensity noise suppression and a frequency shift in the intensity noise spectrum. These findings represent new contributions to our understanding of the reliance of lasing frequency shift on the phase due to feedback, regardless of whether feedback originates from a single or double external cavity. We investigated the optimal conditions corresponding to stable dynamic states of the laser with the lowest noise level. Additionally, we identified conditions that result in chaotic dynamics, where the spectrum does not convey information about the laser system. A novel method for the generation of an optical frequency comb (OFC) is presented. The proposed approach uses a laser diode with optical feedback and operating at a specific nonlinear dynamic state named periodic window. In this case, the laser spectrum exhibits a feature with a series of discrete, equally spaced frequency components, and the repetition rate can be flexibly adjusted by varying the system parameters (e.g., external cavity length), which can provide many potential applications. As an application example, a dual-OFC system for distance measurement is presented. We model dynamics of a quantum dot based micropillar laser array subject to the time-delayed optical feedback. The global coupling provided by the feedback generates a rich set of various instabilities including chaotic regimes with strong time-delay signature in the autocorrelation function. We demonstrate that the dispersion of the array coupling phases leads to effective suppression of the time-delay signature due to the dispersion of the system's internal timescales. We find that the transition to the complete suppression of the time-delay signature appears via a chimera state where highly correlated and non-correlated laser outputs coexist. When theoretically investigating the nonlinear dynamics of quantum dot lasers (QDLs), the parameter value of the electron escape rate (Ce) is sometimes approximated to zero to simplify the calculation. However, the value of Ce is dependent on the energy interval between the ground state (GS) and the excited state (ES) in the conduction band and is affected by the operation temperature. As a result, such simplified approximation treatments may lead to inaccurate results. In this study, after considering the effect of Ce, we investigate the nonlinear dynamics of QDLs with and without optical feedback based on the asymmetric electron-hole carrier rate equation model. The simulation results show that without optical feedback, the lasing conditions for ES and GS in free-running QDLs are dependent on the value of Ce. A larger Ce is more helpful for the ES emission, and the GS emission will stop lasing if Ce is large enough. Through analyzing the dynamical characteristics of GS and ES in QDLs with optical feedback under different Ce values, it can be found that the dynamical characteristics are strongly correlative with Ce. A two-dimensional (2D) solid-state random laser emitting in the visible is demonstrated, in which optical feedback is provided by a controlled disordered arrangement of air-holes in a dye-doped polymer film. We find an optimal scatterer density for which threshold is minimum and scattering is the strongest. We show that the laser emission can be red-shifted by either decreasing scatterer density or increasing pump area. We show that spatial coherence is easily controlled by varying pump area. Such a 2D random laser provides with a compact on-chip tunable laser source and a unique platform to explore non-Hermitian photonics in the visible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we experimentally investigated the mode configuration of an excited-state quantum dot laser (ESQDL) under concave mirror optical feedback, and the influences of the feedback strength on the mode characteristics were analyzed. The results showed that after introducing concave mirror optical feedback, some longitudinal modes of the excited-state (ES) existing in a free-running ESQDL could be suppressed. When the feedback strength increased to a certain extent, the ground-state (GS) emission occurred and co-existed with the ES emission. By further increasing the feedback strength, all the longitudinal modes of the ES emission were suppressed, and only the longitudinal modes of the GS emission could be observed. As a result, the emission-state switching from the ES to GS emission was realized. In a random laser (RL), optical feedback arises from multiple scattering instead of conventional mirrors. RLs generate a laser-like emission, and meanwhile take advantage of a simpler and more flexible laser configuration. The applicability of RLs as light sources and optical sensors has been proved. The optical feedback tolerance (OFT) of a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser was investigated experimentally. The static and modulation performance of the DBR laser under optical feedback was examined by evaluating its relative intensity noise (RIN) and bit error rate (BER). It is shown that the OFT of the DBR laser is closely related to its peak wavelength detuning relative to the Bragg wavelength. A high tolerance to optical feedback was demonstrated, both in the continuous wave (CW) and the direct modulation (DM) states, when the DBR laser was red-detuned relative to the Bragg wavelength. The excess RIN induced by optical feedback was well suppressed to a level of −140 dB/Hz at a feedback level of −9 dB in the CW state. In a 10 Gbps direct modulation state, bit error rates (BER) below 1 × 10−9 and 3 × 10−7 were obtained under a feedback level of −15 dB and −9 dB, respectively, for the case of back-to-back transmission. After 20 km fiber transmission, the BER still maintained below 1 × 10−7 under a feedback level of −15 dB, with a power penalty of less than 1 dB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article offers information on the Photonic artificial intelligence which has attracted considerable interest in accelerating machine learning and its unique optical properties have not been fully used for achieving higher-order functionalities. It discusses a method for controlling the chaotic itinerancy in a multimode semiconductor laser to solve a machine learning task, namely, the multiarmed bandit problem, which is fundamental to reinforcement learning.

In this article, we revisit the concept of optical feedback regimes in diode lasers and explore each regime experimentally from a somewhat unconventional point of view by relating the feedback regimes to the laser bias current and its optical feedback level. The results enable setting the operating conditions of the diode laser in different applications requiring operation in different feedback regimes. We experimentally explored and theoretically supported this relationship from the standard Lang and Kobayashi rate equation model for a laser diode under optical feedback. All five regimes were explored for two major types of laser diodes: inplane lasers and vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers. For both lasers, we mapped the self-mixing strength vs. drive current and feedback level, observed the differences in the shape of the self-mixing fringes between the two laser architectures and a general simulation, and monitored other parameters of the lasers with changing optical feedback. The diversity of observed nonlinear dynamics in laser diodes subjected to optical feedback shows promise as an excellent candidate for chaos-based commercial applications. Thus, works in the last decade have primarily focused on system performances, geometric configurations, and balancing their trade-offs. We demonstrate an optical feedback system operating on phase-conjugate feedback exhibiting state-of-the-art chaos bandwidth values reaching ≈ 30 GHz. We report numerous high-frequency, spatiotemporally complex, chaotic dynamics undocumented in the past four decades. We highlight the underlying physics involving a three-tier temporal interaction mechanism between laser relaxation oscillations, phase-conjugate feedback induced external cavity modes, and chaotic bursts repeating each delay time in the extended cavity. We show supporting real-time high-definition system outputs captured by modern large bandwidth oscilloscopes. The presented work shows to our knowledge, the highest bandwidth and complexity entropy to-date in an optical chaos from a single laser, thereby proving the unnecessary need for further complexity using cascading lasers. The chaotic behavior due to the non-linearity present in a time-delayed feedback system has potential applications for secure optical communication and encryption. We study improvements of the Self-Injection Locked (SIL) distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser phase noise as well as integral linewidth on the amount of the SIL feedback and show that SIL reduces the laser noise nearly equally in a broad frequency range, spanning from 1 Hz to 10 MHz. In our experiment SIL operation is supported by a tunable resonant reflector consisting of a high quality factor (high-Q) monolithic whispering gallery mode resonator (WGMR) supplied with a controllable attenuator. Using the experimental setup we validated theoretical formula describing the SIL spectral purity and identified practical parameters of the system allowing reaching the phase noise limit resulting from the fundamental thermodynamic noise of the resonator. We show that the linewidth improvement due to SIL effect is drastically impacted by the frequency spectral dependence of the phase noise of the laser and that it drops significantly in a flickering laser. We also confirmed that the thermorefractive coefficient as well as mode volume of the WGMR imposes the major limitations on the SIL performance. In this paper, the transmission mechanism of the spike information embedded in the low frequency fluctuation (LFF) dynamic in a cascaded laser system is numerically demonstrated. In the cascaded laser system, the LFF waveform is first generated by a drive laser with optical feedback and is then injected into a response laser. The range of crucial system parameters that can make the response laser generate the LFF dynamic is studied, and the effect of parameter mismatch on the transmission of LFF dynamics is explored through a method of symbolic time-series analysis and the index, such as the spike rate and the cross-correlation coefficient. The results show that the mismatch of the pump current has a more significant influence on the transmission of LFF waveforms than that of the internal physical parameter of the laser, such as the linewidth enhancement factor. Moreover, increasing the injection strength can enhance the robustness of LFF transmission. As spikes of the LFF dynamic generated by lasers with optical feedback is similar to the spike of neurons, the results of this paper can help understanding the information transporting and processing inside the photonic neurons. We propose a high-sensitivity fiber fault detection method using the feedback-delay signature of a modulated semiconductor laser. The modulated laser is directed to a fiber fault and then receives the fault echo, which, in principle, forms an external cavity feedback laser. The fault location, i.e., the external cavity length, is measured by the feedback-delay signature appearing on the laser modulation response curve. The resonance effect between the modulation frequency and external cavity frequency significantly enhanced the laser sensitivity to feedback light and then led to highly sensitive fault detection. External optical feedback (EOF) has great impacts on the properties of lasers. It influences the stable operation of lasers. However, various applications based on lasers with EOF have been developed. One typical example is self-mixing interferometry technology, where modulated steady-state laser intensity is utilized for sensing and measurement. Other works show that laser dynamics can also be used for sensing, and the laser in this case is more sensitive to EOF. This paper reviews the sensing technology that uses the dynamics of lasers with EOF. We firstly introduce the basic operating principles of a laser with EOF and discuss the noise properties of and intensity modification in lasers induced by EOF. Then, sensing applications using laser dynamics are categorized and presented, including sensing by frequency-shifted optical feedback, relaxation oscillation frequency, and dynamics with self-mixing interferometry signals and laser optical chaos. Coherent reception becomes an interesting option when data rates in time-division-multiplexed (TDM) passive optical networks (PONs) grow beyond 50 Gbit/s. Controlling the wavelength, i.e., the optical frequency, and the phase of the laser acting as local oscillator (LO) is one of the main technical challenges in the design of coherent TDM PONs. In the optical network units (ONUs), low-cost lasers are required, which come at the expense of wavelength variations and drifts over multiple nanometers due to fabrication imperfections, and temperature variations. This contradicts the requirement of wavelength-stable LOs in coherent receivers. The use of a wavelength locker circuit and a temperature controller is considered as too complex for applications in access networks. In this work, we propose a novel colorless coherent architecture with high resilience to ONU laser wavelength drifts of up to $\pm$ 4 nm ($\pm$ 0.5 THz) for future 100 Gbit/s PON. It allows the use of distributed feedback lasers at the ONU side. This is rendered possible by generating a frequency comb with carefully chosen free spectral range in a quantum-dash mode-locked laser diode at the optical line terminal. In upstream operation, the frequency comb serves as an LO, whereas the same information is modulated onto all comb lines for the case of downstream. As a result, the ONU laser can drift over the entire comb bandwidth without substantial performance penalty. We experimentally demonstrate downstream and upstream operation with an aggregated raw data rate of 96 Gbit/s, respectively. We further introduce advanced digital signal processing (DSP) methods including a coarse frequency offset compensation (CFOC) and a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) equalizer to improve the performance of our concept. We show that the receiver sensitivity can be increased by 3 dB for a high-bandwidth receiver when using a 6 × 2 MIMO equalizer scheme. This article presents a dual laser-based optical feedback cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy technique using polarization division multiplexing. The technique involves two laser beams with orthogonal polarization that enter a V-shaped cavity from two injection directions. This allows for independent control of feedback phase and eliminates the need for an optical component to combine the beams. The two lasers are detected separately at the two ends of the cavity. Additionally, a differential process is proposed to mitigate residual interference between the two lasers. By employing this technique, simultaneous detection of CH 4 , CO 2 and H 2 O is achieved, resulting in a detection sensitivity of approximately 2 × 10−11 cm−1. Laser emissions at 1.6–1.7 μm band have captured considerable attention in recent years. However, limited by the available emission spectrum of typical rare-earth-ion doped gain fibers, it is extremely difficult to realize highly stable laser output in this wavelength region with a simultaneous high spectral purity and high output power. To address these problems, a cost-effective robust random fiber lasing scheme is proposed to generate the high-power and high-spectral-purity laser output at 1.69 μm. The maximum output power is 7.55 W and the spectral contrast between the output lasing and the pump is as high as 24.3 dB. Both the short-time temporal characteristics and the long-time output power fluctuations are measured, which shows excellent stability and robustness of the laser configuration. In this work, we experimentally investigate the nonlinear dynamics of an interband cascade laser (ICL) under variable-aperture optical feedback implemented by a gold mirror combining with a ring-actuated iris diaphragm (RAID). By continuously varying the diameter of RAID (DR), the evolution of the dynamical state of ICL with the aperture of the optical feedback can be inspected. The characteristics of each dynamical state are characterized by time series, power spectra, phase portraits, and Lyapunov exponents. The results show that, with the decrease of DR, the dynamical state of the ICL under variable-aperture optical feedback presents an evolution from complex, simple to stable. Diverse dynamical states including period one state (P1), period two state (P2), multi-period state (MP), quasi-period state (QP), low-frequency fluctuation (LFF), chaotic state (C), and hyperchaos have been observed. Interband cascade lasers are power-efficient mid-infrared laser sources which usually exhibit a spectral linewidth of hundreds of kHz. However, narrower linewidth lasers are more desirable for high-resolution molecular spectroscopy applications. This work narrows the spectral linewidth of an interband cascade laser from about 530 kHz down to about 30 kHz by applying optical feedback from an external mirror. In contrast to common laser diodes, the linewidth reduction of interband cascade lasers does not require any feedback phase control, which significantly simplifies the experimental configuration, and hence, is highly favorable for practical applications. A semiconductor laser with optical feedback and optical injection is an appealing scheme to construct the time-delay reservoir computing (TDRC) networks. Quantum dot (QD) lasers are compatible to the silicon platform, and hence is helpful to develop fully on-chip TDRCs. This work theoretically demonstrates a parallel TDRC based on a Fabry-Perot QD laser with multiple longitudinal modes. These modes act as connected physical neurons, which process the input signal in parallel. The interaction strength of the modes is characterized by the cross-gain saturation effect. We show that the neuron interaction strength affects the performance of various benchmark tasks, including the memory capacity, time series prediction, nonlinear channel equalization, and spoken digit recognition. In comparison with the one-channel TDRC with the same number of nodes, the parallel TDRC runs faster and its performance is improved on multiple benchmark tasks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The past decade has witnessed major advances in the development and system-level applications of photonic integrated microcombs, that are coherent, broadband optical frequency combs with repetition rates in the millimeter-wave to terahertz domain. Most of these advances are based on harnessing of dissipative Kerr solitons (DKS) in microresonators with anomalous group velocity dispersion (GVD). However, microcombs can also be generated with normal GVD using localized structures that are referred to as dark pulses, switching waves or platicons. Compared with DKS microcombs that require specific designs and fabrication techniques for dispersion engineering, platicon microcombs can be readily built using CMOS-compatible platforms such as thin-film (i.e., thickness below 300 nm) silicon nitride with normal GVD. Here, we use laser self-injection locking to demonstrate a fully integrated platicon microcomb operating at a microwave K-band repetition rate. A distributed feedback (DFB) laser edge-coupled to a Si3N4 chip is self-injection-locked to a high-Q (> 107) microresonator with high confinement waveguides, and directly excites platicons without sophisticated active control. We demonstrate multi-platicon states and switching, perform optical feedback phase study and characterize the phase noise of the K-band platicon repetition rate and the pump laser. Laser self-injection-locked platicons could facilitate the wide adoption of microcombs as a building block in photonic integrated circuits via commercial foundry service. We propose a new sensing method based on the measurement of the second-order autocorrelation of the output of micro- and nanolasers with intensity feedback. The sensing function is implemented through the feedback-induced threshold shift, whose photon statistics is controlled by the feedback level in a characteristic way for different laser sizes. The specific response offers performances which can be adapted to different kinds of sensors. We propose the implementation of two schemes capable of providing a quantitative sensing signal and covering a broad range of feedback levels: one is utilizing the evolution of $\text{g}^{(2)}$ (0), the other one is the ratio between central and side peaks in $\text{g}^{(2)}$ ($\tau $). The dynamics of semiconductor lasers with optical feedback and current modulation has been extensively studied, and it is, by now, well known that the interplay of modulation and feedback can produce a rich variety of nonlinear phenomena. Near threshold, in the so-called low frequency fluctuations regime, the intensity emitted by the laser, without modulation, exhibits feedback-induced spikes, which occur at irregular times. When the laser current is sinusoidally modulated, under appropriate conditions, the spikes lock to the modulation and become periodic. In previous works, we studied experimentally the locked behavior and found sub-harmonic locking (regular spike timing such that a spike is emitted every two or three modulation cycles), but we did not find spikes with regular timing, emitted every modulation cycle. To understand why 1:1 regular locking was not observed, here, we perform simulations of the well-known Lang–Kobayashi model. We find a good qualitative agreement with the experiments: with small modulation amplitudes, we find wide parameter regions in which the spikes are sub-harmonically locked to the modulation, while 1:1 locking occurs at much higher modulation amplitudes. In a free-space optical (FSO) communication system, a conventional transmit laser selection (CTLS) scheme selects the best transmit aperture to send the information bits and offers the best possible error performance. However, its performance is highly dependent on the feedback link, and even a slight error in the feedback information can cause a significant loss to the diversity order and bit error rate (BER). To mitigate this problem, in this research, a novel clustering-based TLS scheme, named two TLS (TTLS), is proposed and analyzed. Note that the word two in TTLS corresponds to the transmission corresponding to the two transmit apertures. TTLS scheme divides the arbitrary number of transmit apertures/lasers into two clusters and then selects the best transmit aperture from each cluster. It is observed by analysis that the TTLS scheme offers a lesser loss in the diversity order as compared to CTLS under imperfect feedback link. Therefore, a significant performance gain can be achieved by TTLS as compared to CTLS under a practical (imperfect/erroneous feedback link) scenario. Further, to retain the full diversity order under the imperfect feedback link, a modified error-tolerant weighting scheme (METWS) is also proposed. It is noticed from the asymptotic analysis that METWS offers full diversity order and outperforms CTLS and repetition coding schemes under both perfect and imperfect feedback links. With the proliferation of diverse laser equipment, the optical environment in which highly sensitive optical systems operate has become harsh and intricate. Mitigating laser jamming originating from the operational waveband is a challenging problem encountered by laser interferometric measurement systems. In this paper, we set forth a robust anti-jamming optical interferometry with high sensitivity. This method is based on frequency shift optical feedback, namely anti-jamming laser feedback interferometry (AJLFI). A rear-end pumping Nd:YVO 4 microchip laser with bidirectional output channels is employed as the interferometric system source, and the photodetector is posterior to the laser cavity. This particular laser structure and the unique detector placement method from optical feedback interferometry make the laser cavity operate as a high-stop-band filter to filter out laser jamming in the operational waveband. In the AJLFI-based system we established, the jamming laser with a wavelength equaling that of the interferometric system suffers a notable attenuation of 44.8 dB. Concurrently, jamming laser falling within a range of ±10 nm from the wavelength of interferometric system gets an attenuation exceeding 44.43 dB. In addition, we set up the standard laser feedback interferometry(LFI)-based system and the Michelson heterodyne interferometry(MHI)-based system with the same experimental parameters as the AJLFI-based system to perform anti-jamming capability comparative experiments. In the experiments, a pulsed laser beam with a peak power of 1780.9 W is employed as laser jamming in the operating wavebands, which is precisely directed toward the target in conjunction with the probe light of the interferometric systems and scattered into the interferometric systems. The experimental findings demonstrate that the AJLFI-based system exhibits superior anti-jamming capability in both phase and amplitude measurements compared to conventional LFI-based and MHI-based systems. Based on three-level exciton model, the enhanced photonic microwave signal generation by using a sole excited-state (ES) emitting quantum dot (QD) laser under both optical injection and optical feedback is numerically studied. Within the range of period-one (P1) dynamics caused by the optical injection, the variations of microwave frequency and microwave intensity with the parameters of frequency detuning and injection strength are demonstrated. It is found that the microwave frequency can be continuously tuned by adjusting the injection parameters, and the microwave intensity can be enhanced by changing the injection strength. Moreover, considering that the generated microwave has a wide linewidth, an optical feedback loop is further employed to compress the linewidth, and the effect of feedback parameters on the linewidth is investigated. It is found that with the increase of feedback strength or delay time, the linewidth is evidently decreased due to the locking effect. However, for the relatively large feedback strength or delay time, the linewidth compression effect becomes worse due to the gradually destroyed P1 dynamics. Besides, through optimizing the feedback parameters, the linewidth can be reduced by up to more than one order of magnitude for different microwave frequencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the possibility of applying optical feedback (OFB) from a short external cavity to change the multimode hopping oscillation in long-wavelength semiconductor laser to single-mode oscillation. We characterize the influence of OFB on the modal oscillations and the associated noise spectrum of the multimode laser. The study is based on a modified time-delay multimode rate-equation model of the laser that includes mechanisms of spectral gain suppression along with OFB induced due to multiple reflections by an external reflector. The study is applied to 1.55 μm-InGaAsP laser that exhibits multimode hopping in its solitary version and supports wide bandwidth. The noise is evaluated in terms of the relative intensity noise. We show that strong OFB changes impact of the asymmetric gain suppression on the mode structure of the laser so that it changes the side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) and induces jumping of the strongest modes to longer or shorter wavelengths in random-like fashion. The change of SMSR of the laser occurs mainly when strong OFB induces multiperiodic and chaos oscillations. We specify the ranges of OFB over which SMO is induced. The low-frequency noise is lowest when the laser maintains CW operation or exhibits period-1 oscillations, while it is maximized when the laser dynamics are chaotic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research investigates and demonstrates a unique configuration of a multiwavelength fiber ring laser covering far L and U bands by employing a booster optical amplifier (BOA), a stabilizer beam, and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) in a dual cavity arrangement. By reducing the loss in the central cavity from 10 to 0 dB, the number of generated lasing wavelengths can be increased from 15 to 30, respectively. The observed side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) for most of these lasing wavelengths is larger than 60 dB. The generated lasing lines are relatively stable where peak power and wavelength variations of within ~1 dB and ~0.08 nm are observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have found a fine structure in the frequency dependence of modulation efficiency of a diode laser (DL) with a strong selective optical feedback. The FM response of an extended cavity diode laser (ECDL) to the microwave current modulation has two peaks whose frequencies are close to the intermode frequency of the laser longitudinal modes. The frequency splitting of the peaks depends on the power of laser radiation and on the difference between the frequency of operating ECDL mode and the frequency of the closest DL mode. We have observed similar splitting in AM noise spectra with the same type of dependencies on power and aforementioned frequency detuning. The peculiarity of the AM noise spectrum has been observed and explained previously by nonlinear interaction of fields in the active region of a DL that results in the frequency splitting of the modes. A 2D carrier transport model to be used in studying the spatial current dynamics in laser thyristors is presented. The model takes into account such features as optical feedback, impact ionization, and drift velocity saturation in strong electric fields. It is shown that there is current localization during laser-thyristor switch-on. A relationship is demonstrated between the distribution nonuniformity of the control current and its amplitude and position of the initial switch-on region. The time of laser-thyristor switch-on is 13 ns at a feed voltage of 26V, with a time of switch-on spreading over the entire 200-μm stripe width of ~65 ns. Dynamics of a multimode quantum dot laser with polarization-rotated optical feedback is investigated in a wide range of bias current. The results reveal that the laser is more sensitive to optical feedback when the polarization of feedback beam is rotated a large angle from the original polarization, which is different from the results in DFB lasers. Anticorrelated fluctuations between orthogonal polarizations are observed in a certain range of selected polarizations. Accordingly, dynamics in the total power can be weaker than that in a selected polarization. The anticorrelated polarization dynamics may be related to different polarizations of longitudinal modes. We experimentally demonstrate high-speed correlated random bit generation in real time using synchronized chaotic lasers commonly driven by a laser with dispersive feedback. The dispersive feedback from a chirped fiber Bragg grating induces frequency-dependent feedback delay and thus no longer causes time-delay signature, and resultantly ensures the signal randomness and security of chaotic laser. Driven by the time-delay signature-free chaotic signal, the two response lasers are routed into chaotic states and establish a synchronization with correlation beyond 0.97 while they maintain a low correlation level with the drive signal. Through quantizing the synchronized laser chaos with a one-bit differential comparator, real-time 2.5-Gb/s correlated random bits with verified randomness are experimentally obtained with a bit error ratio of 0.07. Combining with a robust sampling method, the BER could be further decreased to $1\times 10^{-4}$ corresponding to an effective generation rate of 1.7 Gb/s. Bit error analysis indicates that the bit error ratio between the responses is lower than that between the drive and responses over a wide parameter region due to the synchronization superiority of the responses over the drive.
