Polarization switching (PS) in 1550nm-VCSELs under single and double pulsed polarized optical injection is investigated experimentally and in theory. ‘Normal’ and ‘reverse’ PS were achieved, respectively, when the device was subject to single and double optical injection. Speed operation enhancement is observed for ‘reverse’ PS under double polarized optical injection. Also, the minimum injection power requirements for both ‘normal’ and ‘reverse’ PS have been analyzed showing significant differences for the two investigated cases. Furthermore, we have also investigated numerically the influence of important system parameters, such as the normalized bias current, the injection field strength and the linewidth enhancement factor in the optimal operation conditions for both types of PS. We study polarization switching and hysteresis in a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) subject to an orthogonal optical injection, such that the polarization of the injected light is perpendicular to that of the free-running VCSEL. We use the framework of the spin-flip model to characterize the polarization state of the VCSEL as a function of the frequency detuning. With appropriated injection conditions, the orthogonal polarization turns on and locks to the injected field. Increasing and decreasing the detuning across the two locking boundaries results either in narrow or wide hysteresis cycles, or even in irreversible switching. We study the dynamics of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with continuous-wave (cw) orthogonal optical injection from a tunable laser. We use the dynamical properties of polarization bistability and the interplay with internal or external noise to demonstrate numerically a reliable logic output to two logic inputs encoded in the optical frequency of the injected light. This all-optical configuration is more than ten times faster than the electro-optical implementation and has the advantage of operating at constant injection power. Fil: Salvide, Matias. We study numerically the output polarization of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) subject to orthogonal optical injection. We focus on the width of the hysteresis cycle induced by the variation of the detuning of the injected light. For positive detuning and strong enough optical injection we find that the hysteresis width is proportional to the birefringence parameter; for negative detuning the hysteresis width is narrow and is unaffected by the injection strength. Our results are in good agreement with recent experimental observations.
