Acoustic echosounding systems are increasingly used to image water-column backscatter in addition to mapping the seafloor. We have imaged an acoustic flare generated by methane bubbles emanating from a vent sourced at 1840 m water depth offshore northern California using a shipboard Kongsberg EM122. Data include five transits over the flare and approximately 11 h of continuous observation when the ship held station. Shipboard observations showed a strong flare splitting into multiple smaller, intermittent flares at a water depth of 800–1200 m and pronounced temporal variability. We introduce a new approach to processing the data in which we correct the backscatter data for ship motion and bin the data into voxels with dimensions of 20 m in X and Y and 40 m in Z for a transit over the flare and into vertical slices with dimensions of 15 m in X and Z and 4 min in time when the ship was stationary. The processed data indicate that the signal is dominated by bubbles emanating from a source region with a diameter of approximately 40 m located on the southern edge of what is likely a ring of sources with a diameter of approximately 600 m. When the ship was stationary, we were able to track an individual pulse rising at a rate of 8–10 m/min. Our results illustrate the limitations of monitoring temporal variation in gas flux using multibeam echosounders because of the trade-off between imaging the entire flare by averaging over tens of minutes to hours and observing a slice through the flare to capture short-lived pulses of gas expulsion. Nevertheless, because echosounders are widely available, they can continue to provide valuable data on the spatial and temporal distribution of gas emissions on continental margins that can be used to frame hypotheses and plan more comprehensive follow-up experiments.

Synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR) at different radar wavelength can be used to measure different structural elements of forests. In this letter, we compared the airborne P- and L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomograms and TomoSAR-measured canopy height model (CHM) and above-ground biomass (AGB) over a tropical forest in Lope, Gabon. The SAR data sets were acquired by German Aerospace Center (DLR)'s F-SAR system during the AfriSAR2016 campaign. First, the Weighted covariance fitting-based Iterative Spectral Estimator (WISE) was applied to obtain tomograms. CHM was then retrieved based on the canopy phase center derived from the tomograms. Finally, AGB was estimated via an empirical logarithmic model developed from field measurements and the tomographic backscatter power of vegetation layers between 40 and 50 m above ground. Compared with the classical approaches of Capon and Wavelet-based Compressed Sensing, the WISE method can achieve better resolution with higher computational efficiency and reduce the ambiguity level of L-band tomograms successfully. The experimental results also show that there is no substantial difference between P- and L-band TomoCHM, while P-band tomographic intensity is more sensitive than the L-band for the inversion of tropical forest AGB at a resolution of 50 m x 50 m.

For radar modeling and simulation of sea clutter, there are a number of key characteristics used to describe the observed features. These include the mean backscatter power, amplitude statistics, spatial and long-time temporal correlation, and the Doppler spectrum. Regarding the latter, a common modeling approach is to use the mean Doppler characteristics (width and center point) to relate to the sea conditions. However, this does not capture the time- and range-varying fluctuations of the Doppler spectra, which are important for assessing the behavior of coherent detection schemes. The evolving Doppler spectrum model offers a way to model these variations and can be described with a moderate number of parameters. Relating these to the observed geometry, environment and radar characteristics are important to make the models accessible. Previous work has characterized X-band radar sea clutter over a range of sea conditions and azimuth and grazing angles. In this article, new models are presented that capture variations with both the radar resolved area and integration time. This enables the evolved Doppler spectra model to be used over a much wider range of applications.

Oil spills in the Arctic are becoming more likely as shipping traffic increases in response to climate-related sea ice loss. To improve oil spill detection capability, we used a controlled mesocosm to analyze the multi-polarized C-band backscatter response of oil in newly-formed sea ice. Artificial sea ice was grown in two cylindrical tubs at the University of Manitoba’s Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility. The sea ice physical characteristics, including surface roughness, thickness, temperature, and salinity, were measured before and after oil injection below the ice sheet. Time-series C-band radar backscatter measurements detected the differences in the sea ice evolution and oil migration to the sea ice surface in the oil-contaminated tub, which was compared to uncontaminated ice in a control tub. Immediately prior to the presence of oil on the ice surface, the co-polarized backscatter increased by 13 dB local maximum, while the cross-polarized backscatter decreased by 9 dB. Ice physical properties suggest that the local backscatter maximum and minimum, which occurred immediately before oil migrated onto the surface, were related to a combination of brine and oil upward migration. The findings of this work provide a baseline data interpretation for oil detection in the Arctic Ocean using current and future C-band multi-polarization radar satellites.

In this letter, we propose a dual-temporal dual-channel (DTDC) algorithm for soil moisture retrieval by using time-series observations from the Sentinel-1 C-band synthetic aperture radar. This algorithm utilizes the ancillary information of vegetation water content derived from optical images and assumes no variation on the surface roughness during the two consecutive radar measurements. Therefore, with the DTDC backscatter observations, four equations could be established using forward models, while three unknowns (the two consecutive soil moisture values and one roughness parameter) could be solved simultaneously by minimizing a cost function. The algorithm was tested with a series of Sentinel-1 dual-channel (VV + VH) data over croplands (sugarcane and cassava) of Northeast Thailand with an upscaling resolution of 1 km. Results show that the proposed algorithm could well capture the temporal change of soil moisture with root-mean-square errors within 0.06 m³/m³ when ignoring days with precipitation, and could achieve a similar spatial pattern of soil moisture as detected from the Soil Moisture Active Passive mission, indicating the Sentinel-1 might be a proper tool for agricultural water management.

A long-standing goal in the terrestrial remote sensing community has been the development of a root-zone soil moisture (RZSM) product based on microwave radar or radiometry observations. For example, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) Airborne Microwave Observatory of Subcanopy and Surface (AirMOSS) mission between 2012 and 2015 served as an airborne testbed for the development of RZSM estimates acquired from a 420-440 MHz (P-band) radar. Results from the AirMOSS mission suggest that P-band backscatter can be inverted to provide a direct measurement of 0- to 40-cm RZSM. However, whether AirMOSS RZSM is inherently more robust than indirect RZSM estimates including soil MERGE (SMERGE) and Soil Moisture Active Passive Level 4 (SMAP L4) is not clear. SMERGE and SMAP L4 leverage surface (2-5 cm depth), higher-frequency microwave observations (C- and L-bands) via data fusion (DFus) and data assimilation (DA) techniques, respectively. Therefore, the comparisons of these products are warranted and were based on bias, root mean square error (RMSE), and unbiased root mean standard deviation (ubRMSD) metrics. Comparisons also were made against in situ observations providing additional context. The seven AirMOSS sites within the contiguous United States (CONUS) were examined. Overall, direct AirMOSS RZSM measurements, based on the original retrieval algorithms, did not outperform indirect SMERGE and SMAP L4 RZSM estimates. These results provide insight into the viability of achieving enhanced RZSM accuracy via deployment of a spaceborne P-band radar.

With phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR), an optic fiber can be used as a distributed vibration sensor to perceive the external disturbance along the fiber through the phase variation of the Rayleigh backscatter light. However, due to the inevitable interference fading phenomenon, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of Rayleigh backscatter light at certain points is insufficient, thus affecting the fidelity of vibration sensing. In this paper, we propose the spectrum extraction and the rotated-vector-sum (SERVS) method to suppress the interference fading in the pulse-intensity-coding Φ-OTDR, which applies Golay complementary sequence through acousto-optic modulator (AOM). Benefited from the easier implementation, the experimental results demonstrate that the percentage of fading points can be reduced from 2.98% to 0.33% significantly and the standard deviation of differential phase is also decreased from 0.6556 rad to 0.2901 rad. Also the minimum level of averaged power spectral density (PSD) of the differential phase at whole locations along the fiber is reduced about 6 dB/Hz effectively. For the demodulated disturbance signal, no influence on the SNR is observed thus it maintains a SNR improvement of 8.6 dB compared to the traditional single pulse Φ-OTDR system, achieving a noise floor of 2.38 pϵ/√Hz.

A unique data set derived from remote sensing, airborne, and ground-based in situ measurements is presented. This measurement report highlights the known complexity of comparing multiple aerosol optical parameters examined with different approaches considering different states of humidification and atmospheric aerosol concentrations. Mie-theory-based modeled aerosol optical properties are compared with the respective results of airborne and ground-based in situ measurements and remote sensing (lidar and photometer) performed at the rural central European observatory at Melpitz, Germany. Calculated extinction-to-backscatter ratios (lidar ratios) were in the range of previously reported values. However, the lidar ratio is a function of the aerosol type and the relative humidity. The particle lidar ratio (LR) dependence on relative humidity was quantified and followed the trend found in previous studies. We present a fit function for the lidar wavelengths of 355, 532, and 1064 nm with an underlying equation of fLR(RH, γ(λ))=fLR(RH=0,λ)×(1-RH)-γ(λ), with the derived estimates of γ(355 nm) = 0.29 (±0.01), γ(532 nm) = 0.48 (±0.01), and γ(1064 nm) = 0.31 (±0.01) for central European aerosol. This parameterization might be used in the data analysis of elastic-backscatter lidar observations or lidar-ratio-based aerosol typing efforts. Our study shows that the used aerosol model could reproduce the in situ measurements of the aerosol particle light extinction coefficients (measured at dry conditions) within 13 %. Although the model reproduced the in situ measured aerosol particle light absorption coefficients within a reasonable range, we identified many sources for significant uncertainties in the simulations, such as the unknown aerosol mixing state, brown carbon (organic material) fraction, and the unknown aerosol mixing state wavelength-dependent refractive index. The modeled ambient-state aerosol particle light extinction and backscatter coefficients were smaller than the measured ones. However, depending on the prevailing aerosol conditions, an overlap of the uncertainty ranges of both approaches was achieved.

The radar on the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission observes precipitation at 13.6 GHz (Ku-band) and 35.6 GHz (Ka-band) and also receives echoes from the earth’s surface. Statistics of surface measurements for non-raining conditions are saved in a database for later use in estimating the precipitation path-integrated attenuation. Previous work by Meneghini and Jones (2011) showed that while averaging over larger latitude/longitude bins increase the number of samples, it can also increase sample variance due to spatial inhomogeneity in the data. As a result, Meneghini and Kim (2017) proposed a new, adaptive method of database construction, in which the number of measurements averaged depends on the spatial homogeneity. The purpose of this work is to re-visit previous, single-frequency results using dual-frequency data and optimal interpolation (kriging). Results include that (1) temporal inhomogeneity can create similar results as spatial, (2) Ka-band behavior is similar to Ku-band, (3) the Ku-/Ka-band difference has less spatial inhomogeneity than either band by itself, and (4) kriging and the adaptive method can reduce the sample variance. The author concludes that finer spatial and temporal resolution is necessary in constructing the database for single frequencies but less so for the Ku-/Ka-band difference. The adaptive approach reduces sample standard deviation with a relatively modest computational increase.

For studying the flow of glaciers and their response to climate change it is important to detect glacier surges. Here, we compute within Google Earth Engine the normalized differences between winter maxima of Sentinel-1 C-band radar backscatter image stacks over subsequent years. We arrive at a global map of annual backscatter changes, which are for glaciers in most cases related to changed crevassing associated with surge-type activity. For our demonstration period 2018–2019 we detected 69 surging glaciers, with many of them not classified so far as surge type. Comparison with glacier surface velocities shows that we reliably find known surge activities. Our method can support operational monitoring of glacier surges, and some other special events such as large rock and snow avalanches.

The accurate consideration of vegetation descriptors in water cloud model (WCM) is necessary for precise SM retrieval. Most of the vegetation descriptors are sourced from optical remote sensors. The acquisitions from optical sensors are largely hampered by bad weather conditions. For all-weather monitoring, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) based vegetation descriptors are needed to identify and evaluate their performance for SM retrieval. The present study evaluates the various sources/combinations of SAR based vegetation descriptors in WCM to identify the better alternatives of optical-based vegetation descriptors. The performance of three radar-based vegetation descriptors, namely VH polarized backscattering coefficients, depolarization ratio and radar vegetation index (RVI) along with the one optical-based vegetation descriptor, namely leaf area index (LAI) from MODIS were utilized in WCM. The WCM for each vegetation descriptor has been performed using Sentinel-1 VV polarized backscattering coefficients and in-situ SM. The in-situ SM measurements were carried out in the fields around Varanasi District in India during the winter season sown with the wheat crop. The correlations coefficient (r), root mean square error (RMSE) and bias were used to evaluate the performances of vegetation descriptors in WCM for SM retrieval. The study showed that the depolarization ratio is the best for SM retrieval with accuracy of 0.096 ${m}^{3}{m}^{-3}$ followed by RVI, cross-polarized and LAI with 0.100 ${m}^{3}{m}^{-3}$ , 0.124 ${m}^{3}{m}^{-3}$ and 0.124 ${m}^{3}{m}^{-3}$ , respectively. Thus, the depolarization ratio can be used for the retrieval of SM using Sentinel-1 VV polarized backscattering coefficients over the wheat crop.

This paper presents a linear dependence of temperature sensitivity in Rayleigh scattering-based optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) on the concentration of germanium in the fiber core. Eight different commercially available single-mode fibers have been investigated and compared with the standard SMF-28 Corning fiber. We have experimentally analyzed the influence of germanium concentration in the fiber core, the protective coating, the degree of reduction of the fiber cladding’s diameter, and the amount of humidity on Rayleigh backscatter in response to temperatures ranging from 10-90°C. Maximum sensitivity was 1.343 GHz/°C for 20.78 mol % of the germanium-doped bare fiber and it does not depend on changes in humidity. The experimental results were compared and qualitatively agreed with the numerical simulations.

The latest developments in radar mission concepts suggest that subdaily synthetic aperture radar will become available in the next decades. The goal of this study was to demonstrate the potential value of subdaily spaceborne radar for monitoring vegetation water dynamics, which is essential to understand the role of vegetation in the climate system. In particular, we aimed to quantify fluctuations of internal and surface canopy water (SCW) and understand their effect on subdaily patterns of L-band backscatter. An intensive field campaign was conducted in north-central Florida, USA, in 2018. A truck-mounted polarimetric L-band scatterometer was used to scan a sweet corn field multiple times per day, from sowing to harvest. SCW (dew, interception), soil moisture, and plant and soil hydraulics were monitored every 15 min. In addition, regular destructive sampling was conducted to measure seasonal and diurnal variations of internal vegetation water content. The results showed that backscatter was sensitive to both transient rainfall interception events, and slower daily cycles of internal canopy water and dew. On late-season days without rainfall, maximum diurnal backscatter variations of >2 dB due to internal and SCW were observed in all polarizations. These results demonstrate a potentially valuable application for the next generation of spaceborne radar missions.

Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry $\Phi $ -OTDR) is a powerful sensing device that enables fully distributed optical fiber vibration detection with fast response and high sensitivity. Based on the introduction of its principles, Rayleigh backscatter, sensing mechanism, the characteristics of the $\Phi $ -OTDR system are analyzed in detail. Some gaps in the $\Phi $ -OTDR technology are outlined, and its development trends are highlighted. The application of its current technology is illustrated in different fields such as the perimeter security monitoring system, submarine cable surveillance, and so on. In the experiments analysis, it was pointed out that the device is very sensitive, which is subject to a high rate of false alarms; it also has unresolved types of disturbances. For these purposes, this paper first summarizes the development status of the $\Phi $ -OTDR-based fully distributed optical fiber sensing device. Then, it analyzes and proposes the use of a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) winding flyback converter with shielding, to solve the problem of sensitivity. The shielding method has been proven to significantly reduce high frequency noise up to 30 MHz. This will enable relevant industries and future researchers to know the current state of the $\Phi $ -OTDR device.

This paper is a comprehensive experimental report on the neutron radiation effects of distributed optical fiber sensors with enhanced Rayleigh scattering profiles in an in-pile environment. Femtosecond laser direct writing was used to inscribe Type-II modifications in standard telecom fibers and radiation-hardened fibers with fluorine-doped cores. Rayleigh backscattering signals were enhanced for continuous 1.5 m. In-pile lead-out sensors tests were carried out at the MIT Research Reactor for two months, which was operated at a nominal power of 5.7 MW with fast neutron (>0.1 MeV) flux of 1.29 × 1014 n/cm2/s and an in-core temperature of up to 560 °C. Using the Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry technique, the backscattering profiles of fiber sensors were interrogated with a 3-cm spatial resolution to monitor the temperature profile of the reactor. Results show that laser inscribed Type-II modifications in the form of nanogratings are highly stable against extreme temperature and ionizing radiation. Both standard telecom fibers and radiation-hardened fibers with laser-enhanced Rayleigh profiles can continuously perform distributed temperature measurements over the entire duration of the in-pile testing. Temperature coefficients of sensors and spectral shift quality were studied as functions of total radiation fluence. To the best of our knowledge, we present for the first time, the temperature profile of an operating nuclear reactor core with 3-cm spatial resolution, enabled by distributed fiber sensors with laser-enhanced Rayleigh scattering profiles. The high spatial resolution measurements can provide valuable data for the design and validation of digital twin and virtual reality of nuclear energy systems.

The Surface Water Ocean Topography mission (SWOT), scheduled for launch in 2021, is the first space-borne radar interferometer capable of providing wide-swath height maps of water surfaces with centimetric precision. In addition to its primary objectives in oceanography and hydrography, the SWOT instrument offers opportunities for other applications. Here, we explore the feasibility of sea ice freeboard and sea surface height retrievals in the ice-covered oceans from SWOT data. The quality of SWOT height estimates depends on the backscatter strength and number of samples used for multi-looking. We use near-nadir radar backscatter estimates from sea ice and water over the range of SWOT incidence angles to simulate SWOT height maps and assess the retrieval precision under different backscatter, surface type and roughness conditions. Unlike wind-roughened open water, the available observations suggest that backscatter over sea ice has a moderate dependence on look angle (specularity), and the backscatter of younger, flatter sea ice has a greater degree of specularity than older, more deformed and colder sea ice. To achieve a similar freeboard precision to conventional altimeters (∼3 cm) requires averaging over 15–40 km2 in the near- to mid-swath and 90–175 km2 in the far-swath for lower northern latitudes (

Results of the numerical study of a possibility of compensating for aero-optical aberration distortions of the beam wavefront using the aperture sensing technique based on atmospheric backscatter signals are described. It is shown that the technique makes it possible to partially compensate for aero-optical aberrations. The cross section beam size becomes several times smaller than that of a beam without the wavefront adaptive control, and the intensity distribution becomes more symmetric about the optical axis.

The thickness of a supraglacial layer is critical to the magnitude and time frame of glacier melt. Field-based, short pulse, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has successfully measured debris thickness during a glacier's melt season, when there is a strong return from the ice–debris interface, but profiling with GPR in the absence of a highly reflective ice interface has not been explored. We investigated the performance of 960 MHz signals over 2 km of transects on Changri Nup Glacier, Nepal, during the post-monsoon. We also performed laboratory experiments to interpret the field data and investigate electromagnetic wave propagation into dry rocky debris. Laboratory tests confirmed wave penetration into the glacier ice and suggest that the ice–debris interface return was missing in field data because of a weak dielectric contrast between solid ice and porous dry debris. We developed a new method to estimate debris thicknesses by applying a statistical approach to volumetric backscatter, and our backscatter-based calculated thickness retrievals gave reasonable agreement with debris depths measured manually in the field (10–40 cm). We conclude that, when melt season profiling is not an option, a remote system near 1 GHz could allow dry debris thickness to be estimated based on volumetric backscatter.

A ground-based scatterometer was installed on an alpine meadow over the Tibetan Plateau to study the soil moisture and temperature dynamics of the top soil layer and air–soil interface during the period August 2017–August 2018. The deployed system measured the amplitude and phase of the ground surface radar return at hourly and half-hourly intervals over 1–10 GHz in the four linear polarization combinations (vv, hh, hv, vh). In this paper we describe the developed scatterometer system, gathered datasets, retrieval method for the backscattering coefficient (σ0), and results of σ0. The system was installed on a 5 m high tower and designed using only commercially available components: a vector network analyser (VNA), four coaxial cables, and two dual-polarization broad-band gain horn antennas at a fixed position and orientation. We provide a detailed description on how to retrieve the backscattering coefficients for all four linear polarization combinations σpq0, where p is the received and q the transmitted polarization (v or h), for this specific scatterometer design. To account for the particular effects caused by wide antenna radiation patterns (G) at lower frequencies, σ0 was calculated using the narrow-beam approximation combined with a mapping of the function G2/R4 over the ground surface. (R is the distance between antennas and the infinitesimal patches of ground surface.) This approach allowed for a proper derivation of footprint positions and areas, as well as incidence angle ranges. The frequency averaging technique was used to reduce the effects of fading on the σpq0 uncertainty. Absolute calibration of the scatterometer was achieved with measurements of a rectangular metal plate and rotated dihedral metal reflectors as reference targets. In the retrieved time series of σpq0 for L-band (1.5–1.75 GHz), S-band (2.5–3.0 GHz), C-band (4.5–5.0 GHz), and X-band (9.0–10.0 GHz), we observed characteristic changes or features that can be attributed to seasonal or diurnal changes in the soil: for example a fully frozen top soil, diurnal freeze–thaw changes in the top soil, emerging vegetation in spring, and drying of soil. Our preliminary analysis of the collected σpq0 time-series dataset demonstrates that it contains valuable information on water and energy exchange directly below the air–soil interface – information which is difficult to quantify, at that particular position, with in situ measurement techniques alone. Availability of backscattering data for multiple frequency bands (raw radar return and retrieved σpq0) allows for studying scattering effects at different depths within the soil and vegetation canopy during the spring and summer periods. Hence further investigation of this scatterometer dataset provides an opportunity to gain new insights in hydrometeorological processes, such as freezing and thawing, and how these can be monitored with multi-frequency scatterometer observations. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based filters have a prospective advantage compared to the commercial filters due to their lightweight and ability to work without electricity or heat. The manganese (Mn) removal from aqueous solutions by oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (O-MWCNTs) was investigated. The filtration performance was studied under ambient conditions: the solution pH, the initial manganese concentration, and the MWCNT-filter mass. The samples of MWCNT-filters were investigated using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and rutherford backscatter spectrometry (RBS) to account for the manganese content within the MWCNT-filter. These techniques were conducted to study the oxidation effect on the morphology of MWCNTs and evaluate the oxygen functional groups and the average diameter distribution. Based on these examinations, the competence of Mn removal may exceed 91% for 50 ppm initial concentration of Mn, proposing that functionalized MWCNTs is a promising filter. The Mn removal was achieved at low pH with removal enhancement at the pH of 2. Functionalized MWCNTs based filters are promising candidate for heavy metal ions removal from industrial wastewater.

Owing to differing and complex snow geophysical properties, radar waves of different wavelengths undergo variable penetration through snow-covered sea ice. However, the mechanisms influencing radar altimeter backscatter from snow-covered sea ice, especially at Ka- and Ku-band frequencies, and the impact on the Ka- and Ku-band radar scattering horizon or the “track point” (i.e. the scattering layer depth detected by the radar re-tracker) are not well understood. In this study, we evaluate the Ka- and Ku-band radar scattering horizon with respect to radar penetration and ice floe buoyancy using a first-order scattering model and the Archimedes principle. The scattering model is forced with snow depth data from the European Space Agency (ESA) climate change initiative (CCI) round-robin data package, in which NASA's Operation IceBridge (OIB) data and climatology are included, and detailed snow geophysical property profiles from the Canadian Arctic. Our simulations demonstrate that the Ka- and Ku-band track point difference is a function of snow depth; however, the simulated track point difference is much smaller than what is reported in the literature from the Ku-band CryoSat-2 and Ka-band SARAL/AltiKa satellite radar altimeter observations. We argue that this discrepancy in the Ka- and Ku-band track point differences is sensitive to ice type and snow depth and its associated geophysical properties. Snow salinity is first increasing the Ka- and Ku-band track point difference when the snow is thin and then decreasing the difference when the snow is thick (>0.1 m). A relationship between the Ku-band radar scattering horizon and snow depth is found. This relationship has implications for (1) the use of snow climatology in the conversion of radar freeboard into sea ice thickness and (2) the impact of variability in measured snow depth on the derived ice thickness. For both (1) and (2), the impact of using a snow climatology versus the actual snow depth is relatively small on the radar freeboard, only raising the radar freeboard by 0.03 times the climatological snow depth plus 0.03 times the real snow depth. The radar freeboard is a function of both radar scattering and floe buoyancy. This study serves to enhance our understanding of microwave interactions towards improved accuracy of snow depth and sea ice thickness retrievals via the combination of the currently operational and ESA's forthcoming Ka- and Ku-band dual-frequency CRISTAL radar altimeter missions.

In this letter, we present a new algorithm for the detection of objects embedded in unwanted background signal. We employ systems in radar and optics capable of measuring the full polarimetric response via either the Mueller matrix or the complex scattering matrix. We first solve an optimization problem to find the maximum signal in the null subspace of the unwanted background. We then detail two levels of algorithm: the first restricted to backscatter systems (such as radar) when the dimensionality of the problem reduces, and also for the full bistatic general case suitable for optical analyses. We present examples to illustrate the application in radar ship detection and aerosol particle discrimination in optics.

This work asses a way to improve the detection of pedestrians, workers or cyclists, but also other static elements on the road. These elements due to its low radar cross-section can be masked by other larger objects close to them, when they are illuminated by an automotive radar. Rotating backscatter is proposed to enhance the detection with automotive FMCW radars due to the introduction of a differentiable micro-Doppler signature. A comprehensive theory of operation is explained in this paper. Simulated and experimental results are presented at 24 GHz for transponder detection in presence of strong clutter in range-velocity maps.

The intensity distribution of scattered radiation over the transmitting–receiving aperture of a turbulent lidar is experimentally studied. Sounding was performed along a horizontal path under moderate turbulence with a narrow laser beam located in the center of the receiving aperture of variable size. The relative contribution to the echo signal due to turbulence decreased as the receiving aperture increased. The BSE effect was found to be localized at the center of the receiving aperture: the peak of scattered radiation is located at the axis of the sounding beam, and its size is approximately equal to the beam size; at the periphery, the average intensity of scattered radiation slowly decreased to background values as the distance from the beam axis increased. The result can be used in practice for optimal choice of transceiver parameters when designing a turbulent lidar.

The compact polarimetric (CP) imaging mode is a special, dual-polarization mode in which only one polarization is transmitted and two orthogonal polarizations are simultaneously used to measure the returns. The transmitting polarization can be an arbitrary elliptical wave, and therefore, theoretically, there are numerous possibilities of hybrid dual-pol modes. Since the scattering process is a function of the incident field and scattered field, when we use polarization to measure the backscattering process, radar measurement is polarization-dependent. This leads to difficulties in developing a unified interpretation for target scattering characterization in compact polarimetry, since the scattering models should be modified to take the fact of polarization dependency into account. In this letter, in the framework of a previously proposed CP formalism method, we develop a general model-based target decomposition technique that is applicable to the general CP mode. First, a general link between the fully polarimetric (FP) and the general CP scattering matrix elements is established. Second, the FP models corresponding to a single symmetric scattering mechanism and azimuthally symmetric volume scattering are mapped to the general CP case. Assuming that the 2-D backscatter is composed of a single scattering component and a volume scattering component, the decomposition is finally implemented by solving a quadratic equation. The C-band Shuttle Imaging Radar with Payload C/ X-synthetic aperture radar (SIR C/X-SAR) data are used in the experiment for demonstration.

A total of 10 radars from the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) in Antarctica were used to estimate the spatial area over which energetic electron precipitation (EEP) impacts the D-region ionosphere during pulsating aurora (PsA) events. We use an all-sky camera (ASC) located at Syowa Station to confirm the presence of optical PsAs, and then we use the SuperDARN radars to detect high frequency (HF) radio attenuation caused by enhanced ionisation in the D-region ionosphere. The HF radio attenuation was identified visually by examining quick-look plots of the background HF radio noise and backscatter power from each radar. The EEP impact area was determined for 74 PsA events. Approximately one-third of these events have an EEP impact area that covers at least 12∘ of magnetic latitude, and three-quarters cover at least 4∘ of magnetic latitude. At the equatorward edge of the auroral oval, 44 % of events have a magnetic local time extent of at least 7 h, but this reduces to 17 % at the poleward edge. We use these results to estimate the average size of the EEP impact area during PsAs, which could be used as a model input for determining the impact of PsA-related EEP on the atmospheric chemistry.

Snow avalanches cause a sudden change of snow properties making them detectable with synthetic aperture radar (SAR). However, steep alpine terrain combined with the slant view geometry of SAR sensors complicates detection: the avalanche brightness depends on the incidence angle and the observed area is limited by radar layover and shadow. Likewise, the spatial resolution varies strongly with the local incidence angle relative to the terrain. To increase the avalanche brightness and to improve the imaging coverage and resolution we apply local resolution weighting (LRW) on Sentinel-1 (S1) backscatter images from ascending and descending orbits. LRW merges acquisitions by averaging them, weighted with the local ground-range resolution. To analyze the relative avalanche brightness with respect to the local incidence angle and polarization, and to quantify the benefit of LRW, we created a dataset of 914 manually drawn avalanche outlines based on S1 imagery of an extreme avalanche event on January 4, 2018 in the Swiss Alps. We show that avalanches appear brightest at slopes facing away from the radar at local incidence angles of 55±20∘ ; such slopes are weighted considerably stronger through LRW. With a processing pipeline for avalanche segmentation using a fixed threshold on the backscatter difference we obtain a higher F1 score (0.75) with LRW compared to an unweighted orbit average (F1 = 0.68) or single orbit acquisitions (F1 = 0.5). Optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) measurements are performed by recording the interference pattern of light backscattered by density fluctuations or Bragg gratings along the length of an optical fiber. Changes in local temperature or strain in the fiber cause shifts in the backscattered light spectrum, which can be calibrated to the applied temperature or strain. Comparing the backscattered optical spectra from each reflection site with a reference (unstrained) spectrum allows for quantification of local spectral shifts. While mature OFDR-based technologies can provide high-precision spatially distributed measurements over kilometer lengths, the post-processing approaches used to recover spectral shifts from raw optical intensity data can limit the use of OFDR in harsh environments. This paper presents a novel approach to post-processing OFDR data which extends the usability of optical fibers exposed to harsh environments. This approach is the first to use the spectral shift quality, calculated for two OFDR measurements, to identify an appropriate reference scan from which the spectral shift can be determined. Three experimental data sets are used to test the algorithm: (1) an optical fiber heated to >950°C, (2) an aluminum-embedded optical fiber under strain from differential thermal expansion, and (3) an optical fiber exposed to a total neutron flux of $2\times 10^{13}$ n/cm2/s over 40 hours in a nuclear test reactor. Results show that using a metric of quality to select an appropriate reference measurement extends the functional range of OFDR strain and temperature sensors. Furthermore, this algorithm can be applied to existing OFDR data.

Soil moisture ( Mv ) estimation and monitoring over agricultural areas using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) are often affected by vegetation cover during the growing season. Volume scattering and vegetation attenuation can complicate the received SAR backscatter signal when microwave interacts with the vegetation canopy. To address the existing problems, this article employed the model-based polarimetric decomposition method considering the two-way attenuation to remove the volume scattering and vegetation attenuation. A deorientation process of SAR data was applied to remove the influence of randomly distributed target orientation angles before the polarimetric decomposition. To parameterize the two-way attenuation, Radar Vegetation Index derived from the SAR intensity images was adopted. The Dubois model was used to describe backscattering from the underlying bare soil. Since the soil roughness parameters are difficult to measure under vegetation cover, the optimum surface roughness method was used to parameterize the Dubois model. This soil moisture retrieval algorithm was applied to the polarimetric multitemporal RADARSAT-2 SAR data over soybean fields. The validation indicates the root-mean-square error of 9.2 vol.% and 8.2 vol.% at HH and VV polarization, respectively, over the entire soybean growing period, suggesting that the proposed method is capable of reducing the effect of vegetation cover for soil moisture monitoring over the soybean field.

Great Aletsch Glacier (Grosser Aletschgletscher), the largest glacier in the European Alps, contains 20% of the entire Swiss ice mass. Therefore, it has been selected as a super-testsite for the TanDEM-X satellite mission. Dense time series with a repeat interval down to 11 d were acquired between 2011 and 2019 using two polarizations (HH and VV) and across-track baselines of 0–1 km. To evaluate the use of interferometric single-pass synthetic aperture radar mission for glaciological applications, we implemented a processing pipeline in interactive data language (IDL) and computed 130 digital elevation models (DEMs) from bistatic radar interferograms. We present a method to circumvent a common pitfall during orthorectification of radar DEM differences. Regression analysis of DEM time series shows a height loss of up to 8 m a$^{-1}$ on the tongue and 1.5 m a$^{-1}$ when averaged over the whole glacier area. In spring 2013, we observed X-band penetration depths of 4$\pm$2 m in the accumulation area. For strongly crevassed areas, the coherence drops already to 0.5 for across-track baselines $\mathbf {B_\perp }>$ 200 m. With patch-based incoherent offset tracking, we obtained an almost complete 200 m resolution velocity map. Velocities reach up to 0.8 m d$^{-1}$, show a seasonal variability of $\pm$0.05 m d$^{-1}$, and agree within 0.04 m d$^{-1}$(root mean square error) with field measurements. Copolar phase differences suggest an approximation of snow accumulation. We demonstrate orthorectification of the backscatter intensity using simultaneously acquired TanDEM-X interferograms, which allows for the decoupling of horizontal velocity estimates from phase-center height changes due to penetration and ice melt.

Temporal variations in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) backscatter over forests are of concern for any SAR mission with the goal of estimating forest parameters from SAR data. In this article, a densely sampled, two-year long time series of P-band (420 to 450 MHz) boreal forest backscatter, acquired by a tower-based radar, is analyzed. The experiment setup provides time series data at multiple polarizations. Tomographic capabilities allow the separation of backscatter at different heights within the forest. Temporal variations of these multipolarized, tomographic radar observations are characterized and quantified. The mechanisms studied are seasonal variations, effects of freezing conditions, diurnal variations, effects of wind, and the effects of rainfall on backscatter. An emphasis is placed on upper-canopy backscatter, which has been shown to be a robust proxy for forest biomass. The canopy backscatter was more stable than ground-level backscatter during nonfrozen conditions, supporting forest parameter retrieval approaches based on tomography or interferometric ground notching. Large backscatter variations during frozen conditions, which may be detected using cross-polarized backscatter observations, can result in large errors in forest parameter estimates. Diurnal backscatter variations observed during hot periods were likely connected to tree water transport and storage mechanisms. Backscatter changes were also observed during strong winds. These variations were small in comparison to the variations due to freeze-thaw and soil moisture changes and should not result in significant forest parameter estimation errors. The presented results are useful for designing physically based and semiempirical scattering models that account for temporal changes in scattering characteristics.

Traditional single ground-based ionospheric detection methods often fail to obtain accurately ionospheric parameter information due to the measurement errors of detection systems and inverse algorithms. With the development of high frequency communication and radar sounding techniques, the ionospheric combined detection technology with multi-means is the most effective way to obtain the more accurate ionospheric characteristics. In this study, combined with ionospheric backscatter detection and oblique detection methods, an integrated ionospheric detection technology (quasi-backscatter detection technology) is proposed. The ionospheric parameters are obtained based on the minimum mean square error criterion and global searching method. The experimental results show that the inversion accuracy of ionospheric parameters is significantly improved by using quasi-backscatter detection system(42.3°N, GeoM). In addition, we simulate the propagation characteristics of the quasi-backscatter detection system by using ray tracing technique. And the variation characteristics between the propagation mode (and the propagation energy) and the angle of the transmitting-receiving beam are obtained.

This study is concerned with the analysis of the displacement measurements simultaneously retrieved from multiple Doppler radars placed at different positions of a traffic light’s mast. Currently, the structural health monitoring (SHM) works based on portable Doppler radars consider primarily methods for the extraction of displacement measurements. However, other measurements in the form of instantaneous natural frequencies and mode shapes can also be calculated with the use of Doppler radars arranged as an array. In this article, the wind-induced vibration displacement analysis based on a low-cost Doppler radar array is proposed. The sensitivity of the proposed array to changes in the instantaneous natural frequencies is evaluated. In addition, the structural modal analysis based on a Doppler radar array operating in the passive backscattering mode is demonstrated. The accuracy of the measurements obtained from the radars’ demodulated data is compared with the accelerometer-based measurements. The ability of the proposed array to provide instantaneous natural frequency measurements and structural modal analysis is validated by the experimental results.

Multimode microwave remote sensors are a new type of radar system that operates in SAR (synthetic aperture radar), scatterometer, altimeter, and spectrometer modes in a time-sharing manner according to the current task scheduled on small satellites. High flexibility through mode switching is the outstanding advantage of this new microwave remote sensor. Two or more small satellites operating in different operation modes can be networked to perform observations synchronously to provide excellent remote sensing performance. This paper focuses on a method to determine the radar parameters of the scatterometer mode since the frequency band and the platform height of this new of kind sensor are determined according to the requirement of the SAR mode, and their values are evidently different from the values of current scatterometers in orbit. The proposed method systematically presents the complete steps and related formulae of the radar parameter design of scatterometers and determines the signal bandwidth by optimization. A system simulation method of the scatterometer mode is further studied to determine the wind field inversion error and thus evaluate the rationality of the parameter design results. In contrast to the existing methods, which directly add noise to the backscatter coefficients, our method simulates the noisy echo of the scatterometer and then retrieves the wind field by estimated backscatter coefficients from the noisy echo. The performed simulation shows that, by using the designed system parameters, the multimode microwave remote sensor obtains wind field inversion accuracy, resolution and swath width comparable to those of the HY-2 satellite and the QuikSCAT satellite.

Satellite laser ranging (SLR) with higher repetition rate is the recent trend for its various advantages. Laser backscatter (coincidence between recently transmitted pulses and received pulses near the detector) is found to be a constraint for the repetition rates higher than 20 kHz, due to, overlapping with photons returning from a satellite with the present constellation of most of the SLR systems. Such an overlap occurs at every 75 km satellite distance change at 2 kHz repetition rate, and remains for about 7.5 km; for a 20 kHz system however, it will occur after every 7.5 km and remains for 7.5 km, resulting in constant backscatter overlap – leaving no chance to avoid it. The resulting noise is 5 times more than before causing a serious problem in detection and lowers the signal to noise ratio of the overall SLR system. However, decreasing energy per shot at higher repetition rates – assuming a constant power laser – the resulting backscatter may decrease fractionally.

High-resolution algorithms to estimate the depth of near-surface interface using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) can provide a measurement of thin to thick top layer using synthetic data for surface-coupled antennas. In practice, the air-coupled antenna configuration in the target depth estimation needs to determine the air-gap distance between the antenna module and the surface. In this study, the authors present an improved approach of estimating the antenna height for measuring thin to thick top coal layer using the high-resolution algorithms. In GPR, backscattered echoes are generally correlated in nature. In order to apply high-resolution algorithms, the authors use two improved spatial smoothing techniques for fighting against the correlation between echoes. Here, in the existence of air–coal–shale–clay and air–coal–shale–coal interface, step frequency continuous wave GPR is used to measure the thickness of the coal layer. Simulation results on the antenna height estimation using synthetic data models, full-wave model and plane wave model are shown to assess the estimation algorithm's effectiveness.

Attenuated backscatter measurements from a Vaisala CL31 ceilometer and a modified form of the well-known slope method are used to derive the ceilometer extinction profiles during rain events, restricted to rainfall rates (RRs) below approximately 10 mm/h. RR estimates from collocated S-band radar and portable disdrometer are used to derive the RR-to-extinction correlation models for the ceilometer-radar and ceilometer-disdrometer combinations. Data were collected during an intensive observation period of the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment Southeast (VORTEX-SE) conducted in northern Alabama. These models are used to estimate the RR from the ceilometer observations in similar situations that do not have collocated radar or the disdrometer. Such correlation models are, however, limited by the different temporal and spatial resolutions of the measured variables, measurement capabilities of the instruments, and the inherent assumption of a homogeneous atmosphere. An empirical method based on extinction and RR uncertainty scoring and covariance fitting are proposed to solve, in part, these limitations. It is determined that the most effective way to change the backscatter diagram to reduce the radio visibility of objects is to form the geometric shape of the object in such a way that concentrates the reflected energy in a narrow range of angles, taking into account statistical patterns of orientation of the object of various absorbing materials and paints.The process of reducing the radar visibility of objects by using absorbing materials is described and it is substantiated that increasing the thickness of the absorbing material layer leads to an increase in the mass and size characteristics of the object, which is not always possible.The possibility and assessment of the reduction of radar visibility of objects, the surface of which is formed by a combination of flat faces due to the application of a phase-changing coating, is shown. The obtained backscattering diagrams of a rectangular face without coating and with coating.The analysis is carried out and the advantages of using a phase-changing coating in comparison with a radio-absorbing one are determined.The results show that by using a phase-shifting coating, it is possible to achieve changes in the characteristics of the backscattering diagram of an object whose surface is formed by flat faces.The possibility of using a large number of arbitrary laws of application of phase-changing coatings is shown, which will allow modifying the backscattering diagrams in any previously known direction. The prospects of using the proposed method are determined.

In this study, a series of time-varying breaking waves are generated by FLUENT. The backscattering normalised radar cross sections of the time-varying braking wave at different incidence angles are analysed by employing the method of moments. The scattering results can present the high polarisation ratios and sea spikes. In addition, the Doppler spectrums of the breaking waves are calculated for different incidence angles, and the computational results can indicate the large Doppler offsets and relatively big bandwidths for large incidence angles. Generally speaking, the scattering results in this study could play a part in explaining the super-scattering events from the breaking wave on the sea surface.

Radar sounding is a powerful tool for constraining subglacial conditions, which influence the mass balance of polar ice sheets and their contributions to global sea-level rise. A satellite-based radar sounder, such as those successfully demonstrated at Mars, would offer unprecedented spatial and temporal coverage of the subsurface. However, airborne sounding studies suggest that poorly constrained radar scattering in polar firn may produce performance-limiting clutter for terrestrial orbital sounders. We develop glaciologically constrained electromagnetic models of radar interactions in firn, test them against in situ data and multifrequency airborne radar observations, and apply the only model we find to be consistent with observation to assess the implications of firn clutter for orbital sounder system design. Our results show that in the very high-frequency (VHF) and ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) bands, radar interactions in the firn are dominated by quasi-specular reflections at the interfaces between layers of different densities and that off-nadir backscatter is likely the result of small-scale roughness in the subsurface density profiles. As a result, high frequency (HF) or low VHF center frequencies offer a significant advantage in near-surface clutter suppression compared to the UHF band. However, the noise power is the dominant constraint in all bands, so the near-surface clutter primarily constrains the extent to which the transmit power, pulselength, or antenna gain can be engineered to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Our analysis suggests that the deep interior of terrestrial ice sheets is a difficult target for orbital sounding, which may require optimizations in azimuth processing and cross-track clutter suppression which complement existing requirements for sounding at the margins.

A one-dimensional steady-state model for stimulated Raman backscatter (SRS) and stimulated Brillouin backscatter (SBS) processes in laser-irradiated plasmas is presented. Based on a novel “predictor-corrector” method, the model is capable to deal with broadband scattered light and inhomogeneous plasmas, exhibiting robustness and high efficiency. Influences of the electron density and temperature on the linear gains of both SRS and SBS are investigated, which indicates that the SRS gain is more sensitive to the electron density and temperature than that of the SBS. For the low-density case, the SBS dominates the scattering process, while the SRS exhibits much higher reflectivity in the high-density case. The nonlinear saturation mechanisms and competition between SRS and SBS are included in our model by a phenomenological method. The typical anti-correlation between SRS and SBS versus electron density is reproduced in the model. Calculations of the reflectivities are qualitatively in agreement with the typical results of experiments and simulations.

The main factors causing the occurrence of systematic errors in measuring the backscatter patterns of targets when using irradiator assemblies in collimator type radar measuring complexes are considered. It is shown that the implementation of a quasimonostatic measurement scheme with a bistatic angle determined by spatial separation of the phase centers of irradiators assembly is the most significant factor in the experimental determination of the backscattering characteristics of reflectors with highlighted directed properties, to which the monostatic-bistatic equivalence theorem is not applicable. To quantify the influence of this factor, it is proposed to use indicators characterizing the decrease of the maximum and average recorded cross-section of trihedral corner reflectors within the main lobe of the backscatter diagram, determined by the half power level. The listed indicators do not take into account the non-flatness of the phase surface of the probe field, however, they can be considered as reasonably justified lower bounds for systematic measurement errors for each irradiators assembly. Using the mathematical modeling, mono- and bistatic cross-section diagrams of trihedral corner reflectors of various wave sizes with different face shapes were calculated, error estimation for their backscattering diagrams were determined using a set of irradiator assemblies. Ratios are obtained for estimating of width of the lobe of the bistatic scattering indicatrix at the level of –3 dB of trihedral corner reflectors with triangular, radial, and square face shapes, and a recommendation on the rational choice of the working frequency of the assembly when implementing large-scale electrodynamic modeling is made.

An eye-safe turbulent UV (355 nm) lidar BSE-5 designed for the study of atmospheric turbulence is described. Lidar works on the basis of the backscatter enhancement effect, which occurs when a light wave propagates twice in a random medium. The design of the lidar is based on a transceiving afocal Mersen telescope, which supports thermomechanical stability during long-term operation of the device. To reduce the telescope size, the edges of the primary mirror have been cut off, because they are not used during the lidar operation. The lidar was tested at Tolmachevo airport, Novosibirsk. During the tests, the turbulence was continuously monitored over a runway and over the aircraft parking. The lidar confidently recorded a turbulent wake of any aircraft during takeoff and landing. The lifetime of a strong artificial turbulence over the airfield was found to be 2–3 min.

A cokriging model using three variables is developed to estimate bare-surface soil moisture content based on multi-temporal synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) data. This model utilizes cross-semivariogram function to take into account spatially varied correlation among multiple variables. Here, five sentinel-1 SAR scenes were acquired on different dates using the interferometric wide-swath (IW) mode and a mean incidence angle of 39.02° to build the backscatter temporal-ratio in VV polarization. This algorithm is generally based on the assumption of contributions of soil moisture and surface roughness to the backscattering coefficient under the given radar configurations. In this study, soil moisture is the target variable, and the surface roughness and backscatter temporal-ratio in VV polarization are the auxiliary variables. A cross-semivariogram relationship is formulated among those three spatial variables; then ordinary cokriging is used, based on that cross-semivariogram formula, to estimate the spatial distribution of bare soil moisture content. The root mean square error (RMSE) of soil-moisture retrieval ranges from 2.62 to 2.66 vol%. The new empirical model described in this paper will provide new insights into the study of soil environments.

The increasing number of embedded, plugged-in radios around homes and offices in everyday objects such as appliances, TVs, and smart speakers provides an excellent opportunity to bring ultra-low-power backscatter connectivity to billions of devices. However, backscatter links suffer from high loss due to two consecutive propagations and have to operate on narrow link-budget margins, which makes them more susceptible to multipath losses in indoor environments. To address this, we propose a closed-loop backscatter system that exploits diversity sources such as communication frequency and transceivers antennas based on the channel metrics to deliver reliable coverage over an entire area. We prototype a backscatter system with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) transceivers and BLE compatible tags and deploy it in several multipath rich indoor environments. Our evaluations show that we can successfully communicate with a backscatter tag in a 50m2 indoor area. The proposed algorithm for selecting communication parameters achieves an average 2.7 x success rate compared to the random selection while satisfying FCC output power requirements for frequency hopping transceivers.

This article demonstrates how 3-D vegetation structure can be approximated by interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) backscatter-height histograms. Single-look backscatter measurements are plotted against the InSAR phase height and are aggregated spatially over a forest patch to form a 3-D histogram, referred to as InSAR backscatter-height histogram or simply InSAR histogram. InSAR histograms resemble LiDAR waveforms, suggesting that existing algorithms used to retrieve canopy height and ground topography from radar tomograms or LiDAR waveforms can be applied to InSAR histograms. Three algorithms are evaluated to generate maps of digital terrain, surface, and canopy height models: Gaussian decomposition, quantile, and backscatter threshold. Full-polarimetric L-band uninhabited aerial vehicle synthetic aperture radar (UAVSAR) data collected over the Gabonese Lope National Park during the 2016 AfriSAR campaign are used to illustrate and compare the performance of the algorithms for the HH, HV, VV, HH+VV, and HH−VV polarimetric channels. Results show that radar-derived maps using the InSAR histograms differ by 4 m (top-canopy), 5 m (terrain), and 6 m (forest height) in terms of average root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) from standard maps derived from full-waveform laser, vegetation, and ice sensor (LVIS) LiDAR measurements.

The Doppler lidar and ceilometer data used in this study were obtained from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility, managed by the Office of Biological and Environmental Research for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science., Doppler lidars provide two measured parameters, radial velocity and signal-to-noise ratio, from which winds and turbulent properties are routinely derived. Attenuated backscatter, which gives quantitative information on aerosols, clouds, and precipitation in the atmosphere, can be used in conjunction with the winds and turbulent properties to create a sophisticated classification of the state of the atmospheric boundary layer. Calculating attenuated backscatter from the signal-to-noise ratio requires accurate knowledge of the telescope focus function, which is usually unavailable. Inaccurate assumptions of the telescope focus function can significantly deform attenuated backscatter profiles, even if the instrument is focused at infinity. Here, we present a methodology for deriving the telescope focus function using a co-located ceilometer for pulsed heterodyne Doppler lidars. The method was tested with Halo Photonics StreamLine and StreamLine XR Doppler lidars but should also be applicable to other pulsed heterodyne Doppler lidar systems. The method derives two parameters of the telescope focus function, the effective beam diameter and the effective focal length of the telescope. Additionally, the method provides uncertainty estimates for the retrieved attenuated backscatter profile arising from uncertainties in deriving the telescope function, together with standard measurement uncertainties from the signal-to-noise ratio. The architectures of two innovative compact orientation independent chipless radio frequency identification device (RFID) tags for emerging applications such as the internet of things are presented. These tags, when illuminated, generate resonant frequencies in the radar cross-section backscattered spectrum, which are used to encode the data. These are based around L-type resonators, which can be read from front and back using linear polarisation waves as they do not have the ground plane. The first tag design consists of L-resonators in the lower triangular of the substrate, and thereby mutual coupling is increased as a reduction in the size. The second tag design incorporates alternate L-resonators in both halves of the substrate and exhibits reduced mutual coupling and enhanced printing strength but with a reduction in bit density. The proposed concept is demonstrated through prototypes of 8-bit chipless tags on Rogers substrate. These tags require very low bandwidth to encode 8-bit and occupy a small board size of 20 mm × 20 mm, and these are considerable improvements in the development of chipless RFID.

This paper presents an air-void detection technique for air-coupled radar, which emits electromagnetic waves to interrogate an air-void inside a medium or between two media. The reflections from the air-medium interfaces are usually corrupted by air-coupling, antenna ringing, and internal reflections, rendering air-void detection very difficult or, in certain cases, impossible. The proposed method exploits the low-rank structure of the background clutter to suppress these nuisance signals. A variational mode decomposition model is developed to extract the backscattering at different air-medium interfaces as signal modes. Real experiments are conducted using a stepped frequency radar. The experimental results show that the proposed method can detect air-gap between two sand blocks.
