Plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) is a forage that produces secondary metabolites with one, aucubin, known to inhibit soil nitrification. This study aimed to quantify the exudation of aucubin and catalpol by plantain root systems in a hydroponic experiment; evaluate the effect of aucubin on nitrogen (N) leaching and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from urine applied to plantain and ryegrass-white clover swards; and compare N losses from a ryegrass-white clover sward after urine from cows fed plantain and cows fed ryegrass-white clover was applied. Nitrate ( NO 3 − ) leaching and N2O losses were measured in a lysimeter experiment. Catalpol, but not aucubin, was exudated by plantain roots. N2O emissions were decreased by plantain swards and by ryegrass-white clover swards to which aucubin was also applied. Aucubin had no effect on NO 3 − leaching. Urine from cows grazing plantain had no effect on N2O emissions, and N leaching when compared to the urine from cows grazing ryegrass-white clover with the same N content. We conclude the plantain sward and the aucubin applied to the ryegrass-white clover sward decreased N2O emissions via mechanisms in the soil separate from the decreased emissions resulting from the lower N concentration of urine derived from cows grazing plantain. Soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in pastoral soils could offset net greenhouse gas emissions by reducing global atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2) concentrations and, thereby, slow climate warming. Long-term pastures typically have topsoils (0–10 cm) rich in SOC, with subsoils (10–30 cm) storing less than half as much SOC. In New Zealand, lowland farmers are advised to renew (reseed) their pastures every 7–10 years to improve pasture production. Renewal typically involves desiccating the old pasture followed by shallow tillage (or direct drilling) to establish a short season forage crop as a weed break, then direct drilling new pasture species. Minimum till at renewal maintains the vertical stratification of SOC, limiting the scope to increase SOC stocks under new pasture. During the spring of 2016 and 2017, two independent trials were established, on an Alfisol (trial 1) and on an Andisol (trial 2), to assess the effects of establishing a summer Brassica crop with either full inversion tillage (FIT; 30 cm furrow depth, as a one-off or infrequent (every 25–30 years) management), shallow tillage or no-till (direct drill) on SOC stocks and crop/pasture agronomic performance. In autumn, new pasture species were direct drilled into the stubble of the summer forage crop. Changes in SOC vertical distribution, plant growth, herbage quality (at both trials) and nitrogen (N) leaching (trial 1 only) were monitored. At both trials, FIT effectively buried SOC below 0–10 cm depth and increased crop yields compared to no-till treatment. After re-grassing pasture production was similar among all treatments. In trial 1, N leaching losses were 42% lower under FIT than under no-till. These results highlight the potential agronomic and environmental benefits of pasture renewal including FIT. Sheep farmers can increase production levels as a means to improve economic outcomes. However, this intensification can potentially result in more nitrogen (N) leaching which is at odds with the increasing pressure on farmers to reduce the quantity of N lost into the environment. Therefore, there is increasing interest in the use of alternative forages, such as Italian ryegrass and plantain, which could potentially allow farmers to increase production while decreasing N leaching. This study quantified and compared the quantity of N leaching under sheep grazing four different forages: perennial ryegrass/white clover (RGWC), Italian ryegrass/WC (IRWC), plantain/WC (PWC) and a winter brassica. Five replicates of each forage were established on plots of 800 m2 (40 m x 20 m). Each plot had an independent mole-pipe drain system with tipping-bucket monitoring equipment at the end of the pipe drain. Drainage volume and N concentrations (nitrate-N: NO 3 ⁻-N; ammonium-N; total-N) in drainage water were measured to estimate N losses. The forages were grazed according to the best management practice for each forage type over a two-and-a-half-year period (Year 1: July-December 2019; Year 2: January-December 2020; and Year 3: January-December 2021). In the first two years of this study, NO 3 ⁻-N leaching losses under IRWC and PWC were very small (ranging from 0.4 to 0.5 kg N/ha), and they were not different (P > 0.05) from those under RGWC. However, in Year 3, the leaching losses under IRWC and PWC treatments were greater (P < 0.05) than those under RGWC. This increased leaching was probably due to the need to re-establish these pastures. As part of renewing these swards, the IRWC and PWC plots were fallow during the key late summer-autumn period. In contrast, NO 3 ⁻-N leaching losses under brassica forages (3.5–6.4 kg N/ha) were greater (P < 0.05) than under RGWC (0.5–1.5 kg N/ha). Overall, the leaching losses measured under sheep grazing the forages were much smaller than those commonly reported by dairy studies.
