This paper discusses historical sources that testify to Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini's contacts with present Slovenian territory. He already became well acquainted with the area in his role as secretary to Emperor Frederick III, then especially as Bishop of Trieste in 1447-1450, and finally as Pope Pius II, who confirmed the establishment of the Ljubljana diocese in 1463. The research focuses mainly on the period of his episcopacy in Trieste and investigates several new, hitherto unpublished documents (letters, documents) from this period. These shed new lights on his pastoral activity and question some of the long-accepted narratives of Slovenian historiography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

These letters from Elizabeth Montagu to James Beattie, never published in full before, were transcribed and annotated by the General Editors of the Elizabeth Montagu Correspondence Online (EMCO) project. The article describes the writings and collections of orientalist Dr. Nickolay Fyodorovich Katanov in the N.M. Martyanov Minusinsk Regional Museum of local lore and in the Khakass Research Institute of Language, Literature and History. Today, thanks to the development of new technologies and the ongoing work of archiving and digitization of documentary sources by libraries around the world, and the easy availability of online catalogues of collectors and antique dealers, new material of historical interest continues to come to light. In particular, a group of four recently uncovered letters by Giovanni Battista Viotti may now be added to the known documentary heritage of the violinist, providing their own, albeit limited, evidence of the period and revealing new elements of Viotti's life and character. These letters describe moments in the everyday life of a composer who had a busy social life, who was an administrator and who moved within most important and fashionable circles. In addition to their intrinsic value as new documentary sources on the life of Viotti, these letters allow us to understand better the personality of Viotti and shed further light on his life and relationships. The article presents a critical, philological edition of 23 letters from the manuscript collection Codex Vind. theol. gr. 227, which were either written or received by the Greek Orthodox cleric and teacher Georgios Kalybas on Crete, Greece, in the 1520s and some time thereafter. The editor provides biographical information about Kalybas, the circumstances of his move to Crete from Rhodos, and the language, style, and approximate dating of the letters. The letters, in the original Greek, are then presented in transcription.

The article discusses the writings and importance of the 1848 revolutionary from Romania, the Transylvanian Saxon Theodor Fabini, whose public reception and reputation are said to have become dimmed in the first half of the 20th century. Quevedo lived many years in his domain of the Torre de Juan Abad. Being there, he kept a persevering correspondence with different people of his period; the Prince's tutor, Juan de Isasi, the Count of Montezuma…. Many of these letters are lost, but we keep those written to his neighbour of Beas, Sancho de Sandoval, gathered in the Barnuevo manuscript of the Biblioteca Nacional. We can see an old writer concerned with his garden and the historical situation of the Empire. The letters tells us that heavy rain caused many problems in the winter of 1635, how the village received the Cardinal Borja or how some American tigers and carpets passed through the village used in the decoration of the Buen Retiro palace. Two unpublished letters of the Whitman family about their family's communication is presented.

The article reflects upon the correspondence of H.J.Patron archived at the Queen's College Library, Oxford. It sheds light on the letter written by Gilbert Ryle to Patron reflecting his thoughts on Bertrand Russell's philosophy and his sympathy towards Philosophy of Spirit. He seem to get out of the normal reading confines of his peers, which in the course of time carved a niche for himself.

A recently discovered letter by Lady Mary Wroth to her father, Robert Sidney, appears in the newly catalogued Crawford Collection at the University of Kansas. Written in 1613, the year before the birth of her son James and the death of Sir Robert Wroth, it supplements her ten holograph letters currently in print. Only one letter she penned as a married woman precedes it; it is also the first of two she writes as a daughter negotiating her financial needs. The article focuses on the preference of William M. Ivins Jr., a writer on printmaking in the twentieth century, regarding printed art work. The author says that Ivins had a partiality for specific printmakers or particular types of prints. She also adds that this type of attitude from Irvin conflicted with his duty as a curator. She states that what Ivins likes is best revealed in his personal and unpublished writings. The author supplies several excerpts from Ivins letters to Paul J. Sachs, former Curator of Prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, that detail his comments regarding different pieces of printed art.

This article presents information regarding the life-long interest in the opera of English novelist William Thackeray and his influence in the field. According to the author, Thackeray's acquaintance with opera was put to practical use in his writings in ways that are usually overlooked. The very specificity of his references to actual singers, operas, arias, and even individual phrases sets Thackeray apart from other writers. Yet although several critics have already called attention to the operatic references in "Vanity Fair," no one has systematically examined the extent of Thackeray's acquaintance with the operatic world of his day or the artistic ends to which he put that acquaintance. The author claims a significant incorporation of operatic material into Thackeray's works. Thackeray, reportedly, has spent an increasing amount of time in France, where, as the wording of a letter written to his mother in 1833 suggests, his presence in the opera houses of Paris was both regular and pleasing. Citing excerpts of several of his Thackeray's letters, the author tries to illustrate the significant influence of opera in Thackeray's life.

The unpublished materials of painter Elmer Livingston MacRae were microphotographed in celebration of the Armory Show's 75th anniversary. The Krehbiel correspondence documents the mural paintings that had been commissioned by the Supreme Court of Illinois.

This article presents information about William James unpublished correspondence with Bernard Shaw. James' enthusiastic enjoyment of Bernard Shaw's writing is evident in references James made in two of his published letters. In one letter, dated 20 January 1907, James wrote his daughter that he had recently attended a performance of Bernard Shaw's exquisite play of "Caesar and Cleopatra." In the other letter, dated 1 August 1907, James told his friend, Thomas Sargeant Perry, that B. Shaw's last volume, John Bull's Other Island was the most utterly delightful body of truths he ever had in his hands.

This article presents information on various unpublished letters of Irish novelist, James Joyce. This collection of letters, reportedly, are kept in the National Library of Ireland. There are twenty letters hitherto left unpublished in the catalogued manuscripts (MS) numbered 5378, 5754, and 10,234. MS 5378 has seven unpublished letters addressed to poet G.M. Palmer, dated May 19, July 20, 1922, December 4, 1927, January 1, 1928, January 10, 1928, January 17, 1928, and February 15, 1928. Letters from December 4, 1927, to February 15, 1928, reportedly, are correspondence concerning a plan for publishing a French version of Joyce's poems with Palmer's tunes. MS 5754 includes four unpublished letters. A letter to the district judge, dated September 25, 1925, is Joyce's acknowledgement for receiving his books.

The article traces the history of ownership and authorship of the annotated version of letters by Jane Austen. Fanny Caroline Lefroy and her sister Louisa Lefroy Bellas, both daughters of Jane Austen's niece, Anna Austen Lefroy, annotated the book in careful nineteenth-century script and printing. In the 1920s, the two volumes were owned by Clara Linklater Thomson. By the 1940s, the book had been owned by Frank Hogan, a New York attorney and famous bibliophile.
