This study uses citation data and survey data for 55 library and information science journals to identify three factors underlying a set of 11 journal ranking metrics (six citation metrics and five stated preference metrics). The three factors—three composite rankings—represent (1) the citation impact of a typical article, (2) subjective reputation, and (3) the citation impact of the journal as a whole (all articles combined). Together, they account for 77% of the common variance within the set of 11 metrics. Older journals (those founded before 1953) and nonprofit journals tend to have high reputation scores relative to their citation impact. Unlike previous research, this investigation shows no clear evidence of a distinction between the journals of greatest importance to scholars and those of greatest importance to practitioners. This prestige study surveyed full-time faculty of American Library Association (ALA)--accredited programs in library and information studies regarding library and information science (LIS) journals. Faculty were asked to rate a list of eighty-nine LIS journals on a scale from 1 to 5 based on each journal's importance to their research and teaching. Mean and mode calculations were used to rank results. Additionally, LIS faculty were asked to list the five most prestigious journals to be published in for tenure and promotion purposes at their institution. Several journals were rated highly by each method. This article examines citations of Western journals in eight LIS journals and six history journals published in Taiwan. The findings show that both the Western journals' impact factor values and whether they are included in JCR may not necessarily indicate their real use in Taiwan's LIS and history research-especially in history research. Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the characterization of corrections to the papers published in Library and Information Science (LIS) journals during 2006-2015. It studies the frequency and location of the published errors, time interval between the publication of the original papers and their corrections, as well as associations between journals' impact factors (IF) and their correction rates. Design/methodology/approach: The population of the study comprised of 369 errata published in 50 LIS journals. The data were obtained from Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science (WoS) and Journal Citation Reports. Findings: The results of the study revealed a correction rate of 0.37 per cent for LIS journals, which is substantially lower than that of 124 subject categories with at-least one erratum in the WoS. Among the countries with the highest number of errata in LIS journals, the USA ranked first, followed by China and England. However, the greatest share of errata to overall LIS publications of the country was seen in Kazakhstan, Russia and Botswana. Results showed that no statistically significant relationships existed between the journals' IF and their correction rates. The highest proportion of errors published in LIS literature was occurred in authors' information, references, tables and figures. Moreover, the average time from publication of the original articles to their corresponding errata was found to be 8.7 months. Social implications: Correcting the unintentional mistakes in scholarly articles is an ethical responsibility of researchers and journal editors. Introduction: Research journals form the core of the field of knowledge of a scientific discipline. In the case of profession-oriented disciplines, some "not-as-scientific- as-others" journals also define this core. Objectives: To Describe thematic profiles by journal and country from the analysis of articles of Latin American Librarianship and Information Science (LIS) journals in Spanish language (2008-2016), and to detect local trends and identify areas of vacancy. Methodology: Through a basic quantitative analysis, Latin American LIS Journals are characterized for the period indicated. A database with the articles of the publications identified is made. Results: A total of 28 journal titles and 2388 articles have been collected. Disparity between countries is identified in the quantities of titles and articles. In this editorial, on the occasion of the twenty years of Información, Cultura y Sociedad, the problems and the new challenges of the edition of academic journals are analyzed. Foreign authorship pattern to three leading Indian library and information science (LIS) journals during 2008 to 2017 has been examined to identify the acceptability and popularity of Indian LIS journals among foreign authors. The present study investigates the authorship pattern in terms of different aspects like journals, years, collaborations, prolific authors, countries, research areas, cited papers and citations. It is found that in last 10 year the three LIS journals publish total 186 foreign authored article having total 1267 citation and two-authored papers are predominant. Besides, the authors from Nigeria share maximum articles followed by USA. It is recommended that the Indian LIS authors need to emphasis more on international collaboration to output more foreign authored contributions in national level journals to enrich journals literature. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Revista Interamericana de Bibliotecología, it is pertinent to remember how the current direction of the Journal was assumed: Which were the disadvantages faced back then and how were they overcome. In the previous issue, a historical tour was made and editorial committees and teams that have contributed to the RIB continue were remembered. This study aimed to examine the hidden structures and patterns of information flow in Chinese-language Library and Information Science (LIS) journals in Taiwan. Thirteen Chinese LIS journals and 2,914 articles published between 2001 and 2012 were selected as subject and an aggregated 13x13 matrix was generated to perform journal-to-journal citation analysis. The twelve-year period was further divided into three individual periods of four years each to conduct journal-to-journal citation analysis for evolutional comparison. Social network analysis was used to discover the implicit structures and patterns embedded in Chinese-language LIS journals in Taiwan in terms of network structure. The embedded structures and patterns in the Chinese-language LIS journal network were characterized by Bonich's Eigenvector degree centrality, Stephenson and Zelen's information centrality and Freeman's betweenness centrality. These were used to measure journal prominence and role, bottom-up clique to find core journals and structural equivalence to show alternative publication outlets. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand how Chinese library and information science (LIS) journal articles cite works from outside the discipline (WOD) to identify the impact of knowledge import from outside the discipline on LIS development.Design/methodology/approach This paper explores the Chinese LIS’ preferences in citing WOD by employing bibliometrics and machine learning techniques.Findings Chinese LIS citations to WOD account for 29.69 percent of all citations, and they rise over time. Computer science, education and communication are the most frequently cited disciplines. Under the categorization of Biglan model, Chinese LIS prefers to cite WOD from soft science, applied science or nonlife science. In terms of community affiliation, the cited authors are mostly from the academic community, but rarely from the practice community. Mass media has always been a citation source that is hard to ignore. There is a strong interest of Chinese LIS in citing emerging topics.Practical implications This paper can be implemented in the reformulation of Chinese LIS knowledge system, the promotion of interdisciplinary collaboration, the development of LIS library collection and faculty advancement. It may also be used as a reference to develop strategies for the global LIS.Originality/value This paper fills the research gap in analyzing citations to WOD from Chinese LIS articles and their impacts on LIS, and recommends that Chinese LIS should emphasize on knowledge both on technology and people as well as knowledge from the practice community, cooperate with partners from other fields, thus to produce knowledge meeting the demands from library and information practice as well as users. Jeffrey Beall’s blog listing of potential predatory journals and publishers, as well as his Criteria for Determining Predatory Open-Access (OA) Publishers are often looked at as tools to help researchers avoid publishing in predatory journals. While these Criteria has brought a greater awareness of OA predatory journals, these tools alone should not be used as the only source in determining the quality of a scholarly journal. Employing a three-person independent judgment making panel, this study demonstrates the subjective nature of Beall’s Criteria by applying his Criteria to both OA and non-OA Library and Information Science journals (LIS), to demonstrate that traditional peer-reviewed journals could be considered predatory. DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology (DJLIT) has been considered one of the most important journal in the field of Library and Information Science. The present study covers year-wise published papers, special issue, authorship pattern, degree of author collaboration, author productivity, state-wise distribution of authors, country-wise distribution of authors, major contributors, length of papers, cited references, subject-wise published papers in DJLIT during the period of 2011-2015. The study reveals that 310 papers were published in 30 issues of 5 volumes during 2011-2015. 70 (22.58%) papers in great numbers are published in volume no. 32 in 2012, 193 (62.26%) papers are published in special issues, 132 (42.58%) contributed their papers as two-authored and 119 (38.39%) contributed as single author, average author productivity per author is 0.54 during 2011-2015, Delhi state 107 (18.54%) authors are great in number out of 577 authors, 502 (87%) Indian and 75 (13%) foreign authors contributed their papers. The present paper assesses the contribution of West Bengal authors in Indian LIS journals during 2006-2015 based on Indian Citation Index (ICI). The bibliometric study examined the publication productivity and trend according to year, authorship pattern, collaborative coefficient, prolific authors, prolific institutions, preferred journals, reference wise etc. During the study period, a total number of 193 articles have been contributed in 13 Indian LIS journals by the West Bengal authors. Jadavpur University has been found as the leading productive institutions and IASLIC Bulletin has been considered as the most preferred journals for scholarly communication. The present study is based on the data taken from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), a database of fully open access peer-reviewed scholarly journals. The prime objective of the study is to explore quantitatively the inclusion of Library & Information Science Journal from several perspectives. It is found that there are 158 LIS journals indexed in DOAJ published from 43 countries in 21 different languages. While English is the dominant language of publication 3 journals are published simultaneously in five languages. India occupies the fifth rank sharing a common position with its counterparts like Poland and United Kingdom with six Indian LIS journals indexed in DOAJ. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has brought out API linked selection and promotion of teachers and other academic staff through the UGC Regulations 2010. It is also applied to the library staff at the level of Assistant librarian cadre and above and also college librarian. The UGC had made four amendments in the Regulations as quality measures in the past. The UGC recently identified and issued a list of 38652 journals for counting of API in the category of Research Publication - Journals for selection/promotion of teachers and other academic staff in the universities and colleges. Several studies discussed the characteristics of authors who published in Library and Information Science journals. Although none focused specifically on Arab librarians as authors, the current study attempts to reveal the scholarly contributions to library literature by Arab librarians. The study describes and analyses the journal research publications in Library and Information Science journals by professional librarians from 1981 to 2010. Single-author articles are found to be highly followed by two and three authored articles. The average degree of collaboration between authors in Library and Information Science journals is 9.64% (only 19 journal articles written by at least two or three authors). The article presents the top library and information science journals (LIS) published from India. These include "Annals of Library and Information Studies, "DESIDOC Journal of Library & Information Technology" and "Information Studies." They publish research papers, short communications, editorials, obituaries, book reviews and reports of conferences and seminars.

The paper identifies the present status of journal publishing in India in the field of library & information science. Identification of journals were made by consulting various sources. The characteristics of the journals have been studied on various parameters like number of years of existence, type of publisher, accessibility, references and citation characteristics, etc. Of the total 72 identified journals, it was observed that almost 70% journals started their publication from 2000 onwards. About 81% journals are available on subscription basis. Print as well as online format for dissemination of research have been adopted by 59% journals, however, 30% journals are still available only in print form. It is seen that private or profit-making (59%) organizations are more interested to publish LIS journals than non-profit making organizations (41%). One of the major drawbacks of Indian LIS journals is there poor visibility and limited coverage in various bibliographical databases. More than 54% journals are not indexed in any important bibliographic database and only 6 journals are indexed in LISA, LISTA or ILSA. The citation statistics of these journals are not satisfactory as 42 journals did not receive any citations for their articles published during 2011-2013. Indian library and information science (LIS) journals are not indexed in Web of Science (WoS) database and lately Scopus® database of Elsevier B.V. has indexed three Indian LIS journals. Hence, Google Scholar (GS) is the only available global database for the citation analysis of Indian LIS journals. Based on GS, this study has traced the citation and authorship patterns of selected LIS journals. Although, GS covers wide spectrum of scholarly literature worldwide, this study found that Indian LIS journals have low visibility even in GS database. In terms of citations, multiple-authored articles generally got more citations than the single-authored articles. Journals are the main vehicles for disseminating research publications and one can gauge the standard of research in the country through its publications. India has a growing population of researchers and academics who want to publish and search for easy outlets guaranteeing quick publication. Indian journals as a whole and LIS journals in particular fail miserably when it comes to maintaining quality. There should be a first received first reviewed and first published policy to be adopted by Indian LIS journals. Indian journal editors need to be more communicative with authors and they should adopt the best practices followed by the international journal editors. Indian LIS researchers have few journals and conference proceedings to publish their papers on the one hand and there is a need to publish more papers for professional progress. This has become important especially in the aftermath of the Academic Performance Indicators (APIs) introduced by the UGC after the VI Central Pay Revision where 55% of API scores can be claimed through publications. Through consortia based access, LIS researchers are exposed to what is being studied in the advanced countries. Thus more number of papers by LIS researchers from India are appearing in international journals. There are also many papers getting wasted in conference proceedings and festschrift volumes and editor interest driven book chapters. Such publications never have a wider reach and suffer from poor bibliographic control. The study presents an analysis of the number of articles published in Annals of Library and Information Studies (ALIS) and DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology (DJLIT) during 2010-2013 and the citations obtained by these articles during 2010-2014 (April) using Google. The study develops immediacy index and impact factor of the two journals, besides, identifying the highly cited authors/papers. Findings reveal that DJLIT published more papers than ALIS and also received more citations. However, citation per paper for both the journals is almost equal. A few countries publish a good number of library and information science journals and India is also in the race. This paper briefly traces the hundred years journey of Indian LIS periodicals. In all, 186 periodicals have been found to be published since 1912, of which 63 periodicals have ceased publication and the remaining 123 are continuing. The oldest periodical entitled Library Miscellany was started in the year 1912 from Baroda and ceased after eight years, in 1920. Another periodical entitled Granthalaya Sarvaswamu that started in 1915 from Vijayawada is still continuing. It is a bilingual periodical and publishes articles both in English and Telugu. This periodical may be reckoned as the oldest Indian LIS periodical today. A few of the periodicals are indexed in well known indexing, abstracting and bibliographic databases. It is observed that most journals were from Delhi followed by West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. Nearly eighty percent periodicals are in English, while 17% are multilingual (English with one or more regional languages). The leading regional language is Bengali followed by Marathi and Hindi. It is found that 78% periodicals appear in printed form, 10% in online electronic form and 12% publications appear in both printed and electronic form. Also, 93% periodicals are found as closed access publication, while only 7% are open access. Among Indian LIS periodicals, 35% are (quarterly) and 31% (bi-annual). The proportion of monthly and annual periodicals is 9% each. Mushrooming of open access LIS periodicals has been observed since 2010. The purpose of the study is to evaluate a Nigerian Library and Information Science journal in order to assess its performance viz-a viz importance index, influence weight and popularity index. Citation analysis was carried out on "Information Impact: Journal of Information and Knowledge Management" ISSN: 2141-4297. The study examined articles and authors published in Information Impact: Journal of Information and Knowledge Management (IIJIKM) over a four year period of 20110-2013. The study revealed that journal is the most preferred source of citation in LIS research. Library Philosophy and Practice, an e-journal topped the list of journals most cited in IIJIKM. A significant revelation of this study is the use of Internet resources, which is fast gaining ground amongst scholars and academics in Nigeria. Findings also revealed that information technology was the most researched subject. There was clear absence of international collaboration among authors published in the journal. Majority of the authors prefer multiple authorship as against single authorship and are mainly from academic institutions especially the University. The paper concludes that the journal influence and popularity index is high in the South, where it is based and Northern part of the country. It is therefore recommended, amongst others that publishers of journals in Nigeria should explore the opportunities and infrastructure provided by international bodies such as INASP to publish their journals online, in order to increase their global visibility. The SRELS Journal of Information Management was started in 1964 with the title Library Science with a Slant to Documentation under the sponsorship of the Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (SRELS). It is now a peer reviewed periodical. With the advent of e-publishing, keeping with the trend, an online version is also available. At the beginning the papers mainly focused on the research conducted at DRTC in particular, Library Classification and Library Cataloguing, Documentation and gradually extended its coverage to new areas of interest e.g. Computer Applications, Library Management and Information Systems. During the 1970's, when CSIR/NISSAT was launched, special issues devoted to Information Systems - planning and organization, were brought out. Now the periodical is fully multidisciplinary, covering all facets of Library and Information Science (LIS).. This paper attempts to map the subjects of the papers of this periodical which has spanned the last fifty years. The analysis would serve as a check list for the areas of current and traditional subject interests in the field of LIS. Purpose – This study seeks to analyse the policies of library and information science (LIS) journals regarding the publication of supplementary materials, the number of journals and articles that include this feature, the kind of supplementary materials published with regard to their function in the article, the formats employed and the access provided to readers. Design/methodology/approach – The study analysed the instructions for authors of LIS journals indexed in the ISI Journal Citation Reports, as well as the supplementary materials attached to the articles published in their 2011 online volumes. Findings – Large publishers are more likely to have a policy regarding the publication of supplementary materials, and policies are usually homogeneous across all the journals of a given publisher. Most policies state the acceptance of supplementary materials, and even journals without a policy also publish supplementary materials. The majority of supplementary materials provided in LIS articles are extended methodological explanations and additional results in the form of textual information in PDF or Word files. Some toll-access journals provide open access to any reader to these files. Originality/value – This study provides new insights into the characteristics of supplementary materials in LIS journals. The results may be used by journal publishers to establish a policy on the publication of supplementary materials and, more broadly, to develop data sharing initiatives in academic settings. The open access SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) service -built from data in the subscription-based Elsevier's Scopus database- offers bibliographic information and bibliometric indicators for nearly 20,000 journals and other serial publications for 1996-2011. Journals are assigned to 300+ pre-defined subject categories and 26 broad subject areas to produce league lists. The set of 134 journals assigned to the Library and Information Sciences (LIS) subject category and a sample set of 50 other LIS journals, scattered across several other categories, were analyzed in the latest edition (SJR- 2011). Recommendations are made on how SJR could be enhanced by its developers to include simple customization options in the interface to facilitate a more efficient look-up and more valid comparison of the standing of journals and other serials and to reflect the prevailing preferences at the institutions where the rank positions in journal league lists are used to inform career advancement and funding decisions. It is argued that extending the current three-year citation window to five years would be more appropriate for all disciplines, and would also make SJR comparable to metricsbased journal league lists produced from the open access Microsoft Academic Search (MAS), Google Scholar Metrics for Publications (GSMP), and Eigenfactor.org (EF) data and the subscription-based Journal Citation Reports (JCR), which pioneered the idea of a metrics-based journal league list. Purpose – The main purpose of the present study is to examine the availability and persistence of URL citations in two LIS open access journals. It also intended to calculate the half-life period of URL citations cited in journal articles. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 2,890 URL citations cited in 689 research articles published in LIS journals spanning a period of 14 years (1996-2009) were extracted. In order to check the accessibility of URL citations, W3C link checker was used. After the initial check, inactive URL citations were listed. Domains and HTTP errors associated with inactive URL citations were identified for further analysis. The half-life period was calculated using the formula t(h)=[t ln(0.5)]/[ln W(t)-ln W(0)]. Findings – The research findings indicated that 57.61 percent (397 of 689) of articles have URL citations and percentage of URL citations increased from 5.98 percent in 1996 to 27.79 percent in 2009. It was found that 26.08 percent of all citations were not accessible during the time of testing and the majority of errors were due to HTTP 404 error code (not found). The domains.net and.gov were more stable compared to the domains.com/.co,.org, and.edu. The half-life was computed to be approximately 11.5 years, which compares favorably against earlier research works. Originality/value – This is a comprehensive study on the availability and persistence of URL citations cited in LIS journals articles spanning a period of 14 years. The findings of the study will be helpful to authors, publishers and editorial staff to improve existing URL citation conventions and to promote URL use to ensure that URL citations are accessible in future. Although instruction in writing for Library and Information Science (LIS) publication is becoming more prevalent, emotions inherent in the publishing cycle are seldom discussed. Through a review of the literature this article investigates how LIS writers can develop their technical skills in publishing scholarly articles, and then looks at managing the emotional component of the process at the writing, submission, revision or rejection, and post-publication stages. LIS literature, as well as literature drawn from psychology, academic writing, and publishing, is consulted. Potential and experienced LIS writers can be reassured that both literature and publishing initiatives are available to help the writer learn to publish, and that associated emotions during the process are not unusual. Purpose – This research aims to study the state of online resources cited in scholarly library and information science (LIS) journals which are ranked in ISI and available in the Emerald database in terms of accessibility and decay. Design/methodology/approach – Four LIS journals published by Emerald were selected from Thomson Reuters' JCR. The journals' issues from 2005 to 2008 were downloaded directly from the publisher web site and checked in terms of decay and availability of individual cited URLs. Findings – Original accessibility of studied online resources was 64 percent, which improved to 95 percent. The main adopted strategies that returned more results were using the Wayback Machine and Google, which revived online resources by 17 percent and 12 percent respectively. Practical implications – To increase the rate of web citations accessibility, some recommendations, including avoiding long URLs, citing documents found in digital collections availability on the web, working through systematic checking of the web citations before publication, getting backup of cited information, using the more stable file formats and domains, and utilizing tools like WebCite®-enhanced reference and a digital object identifier (DOI®) system are suggested. Originality/value – A study which examines the accessibility and decay of web citations used by authors of articles published in ISI-ranked LIS journals available in the Emerald database has not been already done. This research uses the h-index to rank the quality of library and information science journals between 2004 and 2008. Selected open access (OA) journals are included in the ranking to assess current OA development in support of scholarly communication. It is found that OA journals have gained momentum supporting high-quality research and publication, and some OA journals have been ranked as high as the best traditional print journals. The findings will help convince scholars to make more contributions to OA journal publications, and also encourage librarians and information professionals to make continuous efforts for library publishing. The current study seeks to describe and analyze journal research publications in the top 10 Library and Information Science journals from 2007–8. The paper presents a statistical descriptive analysis of authorship patterns (geographical distribution and affiliation) and keywords. Furthermore, it displays a thorough content analysis of keywords and abstracts extracted from 10 leading Information Science journals in 2007–8, using Zins’ (2007) classification scheme of Information Science. The main results suggest the tendency of authors towards collaboration in authorship. North American and European authors – from the core discipline of Librarianship and Information Science – can be considered as leaders in the top 10 LIS journals. Furthermore, there are three major cores of research in these journals: information technology, methodology and social information science. The Australian federal government's 2009 Excellence in Research Australian (ERA) policy initiative gave Australian LIS researchers the opportunity to review their listings of preferred journal titles: listings that were to act as a component of measured research activity in the new federal government funding regimes. The Australian research environment, and university reliance on ranking, meant that the importance of ranking journal titles could not be ignored. The ranking of journal titles as submitted to the Research Quality Framework (RQF) exercise in 2007-8, was reviewed in a tight timeframe, with a collegial response to calls for feedback. The results are reported and the anomalous nature of the place of Australian LIS in the Field of Research (FoR) category as assigned by the Australian Bureau of Statistics is discussed, as is the potential relevance of this categorisation regarding the choice of journal titles by these members of the LIS discipline [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Academic journals play an important role in scientific communication. The effective organization of journals can help reveal the thematic contents of journals and thus make them more user-friendly. In this study, the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) technique was employed to visually analyze the 60 library and information science-related journals published from 2006 to 2008. The U-matrix by Ultsch (2003) was applied to categorize the journals into 19 clusters according to their subjects. Four journals were recommended to supplement library collections although they were not indexed by SCI/SSCI. A novel SOM display named Attribute Accumulation Matrix (AA-matrix) was proposed, and the results from this method show that they correlate significantly with the total occurrences of the subjects in the investigated journals. The AA-matrix was employed to identify the 86 salient subjects, which could be manually classified into 7 meaningful groups. A method of the Salient Attribute Projection was constructed to label the attribute characteristics of different clusters. Finally, the subject characteristics of the journals with high impact factors (IFs) were also addressed. There are evidences of the relationship between collaboration rate and quality of articles. The more the number of authors, the more qualified the article. Study of the collaboration rate among researchers is essential for strategic planning and research policy in major. The main objective of this research is to determine the authors' collaboration rate in the articles of Scientometrics journal. Other aims are determination of the number of articles of the journal during the mentioned year, the most prolific authors, the most prolific organizations and research centers, etc. The type of research is descriptive survey. Data was gathered via check list and analyzed through Excel. The most articles have been published in 2006 and the least in 2004. The mean number for each article is 2.33 authors. The collaboration coefficient is 0.60. Wolfgang Glänzel, Ronald Rousseau, and Leo Egghe are 3 writers who had the most articles and also the more collaboration during the mentioned years. Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) with 71 articles, University of Granada (Spain) with 49 articles and Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Hungary) with 33 articles are the centers which had the most collaborations. The purpose of this article is to explore the use of mixed methods research (MMR) in articles published in library and information science (LIS) journals in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) from 2004 to 2008. A mixed methods research framework provided in the methodological literature is used to determine how this method was practiced within the LIS scientific community in SSA. Six hundred and eighty five articles published in nine peer-reviewed LIS journals in SAA were reviewed, finding the dominant research methods in these journals to be survey designs and historical research. The use of MMR was limited: 48 out of 685 articles used the mixed methods approaches that were identified in the methodological literature. A paradigm shift and a change of mindset are recommended for LIS researchers in SSA so that they may exploit the advantages offered by mixed methods research in conducting their studies. The article presents the communication habits of practitioners and academics based on 10 German-language and 40 international journals on library and information issues. Three questions have been put during relevant research: what is the role of practitioners as authors and readers respectively in communication on library and information science; is there a knowledge/information exchange between practitioners and the authors and readers of scientific themes; and whether there is a difference between journals dealing with theoretical and practical issues. The article traces the evolution of the library and information sciences journal "Biblioteca Universitaria," published by the Dirección General de Bibliotecas (DGB) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico. It examines the development of the journal's content and graphic design, focusing on the editorial decision-making that led to improvements in quality and increases in circulation.

Using 17 fully open-access journals published uninterruptedly during 2000 to 2004 in the field of library and information science, the present study investigates the impact of these open-access journals in terms of quantity of articles published, subject distribution of the articles, synchronous and diachronous impact factor, immediacy index, and journals' and authors' self-citation. The results indicate that during this 5-year publication period, there are as many as 1,636 articles published by these journals. At the same time, the articles have received a total of 8,591 Web citations during a 7-year citation period. Eight of 17 journals have received more than 100 citations. First Monday received the highest number of citations; however, the average number of citations per article was the highest in D-Lib Magazine. The value of the synchronous impact factor varies from 0.6989 to 1.0014 during 2002 to 2005, and the diachronous impact factor varies from 1.472 to 2.487 during 2000 to 2004. The range of the immediacy index varies between 0.0714 and 1.395. D-Lib Magazine has an immediacy index value above 0.5 in all the years whereas the immediacy index value varies from year to year for the other journals. When the citations of sample articles were analyzed according to source, it was found that 40.32% of the citations came from full-text articles, followed by 33.35% from journal articles. Using citation data from Journal Citation Reports (JCR) 1996-2004, this research replicates Meyer and Spencer's analysis of other-field citations to Library and Information Science (LIS) journals from 1972 to 1994. After 1994, JCR added LIS journals emphasizing empirical, information science research and simultaneously dropped journals addressing the profession of librarianship. The newly added journals attract a broader interdisciplinary readership—a readership reflected in a 14 percent increase in other-field citations of the LIS journals. The LIS journals included in both this and the Meyer and Spencer research, a list dominated by titles frequently read and cited by others in the LIS discipline, have not received an equal increase in other-field citations. Objective - To determine how much of the literature in a library and information science (LIS) periodical collection qualifies as research. Design - Content analysis. Setting - The LIS periodicals collection of an academic library that supports an established LIS graduate program at a college in the United States of America. Subjects - Of the 177 identified periodicals with LIS content that fell within project scope from the local collection, researchers analyzed 101 journals that include academic/scholarly content and an additional 4 journals with relevant trade content. This study excluded open access (OA) journals. Methods - Using the most recent issue of each subject journal from the fiscal year 2012-2013, the authors performed a content analysis on all indexed content items, and then classified each content item as research or non-research. For content identified as research, researchers identified the research method (or methods) used. The data collection tool also captured identifying information and keywords for all content. Main Results - Within the journals meeting the scope of this study, researchers identified 1,880 articles from 105 individual journal issues. Only 16% (n=307) of articles met the authors' established definition to qualify as research. Within the subset of research articles, the authors further identified 45% (n=139) that used a single research method. An additional 36% (n=112) of identified research articles used two research methods and 15% (n=46) used three methods, with the remainder using four or more methods. Surveys were the most frequently used research method, accounting for 49% (n=66) of the single method studies. The researchers discovered that surveys remained popular even in mixed-method studies, with 21% (n=117) of all identified research articles using surveys. This is closely followed by 20% (n=109) of studies reported as using the general category of "other" methods, for research that did not meet one of the predefined methods. The next two most popular identified methods were case studies at 13% (n=73), followed by content analyses at 13% (n=71). For the eight other research methods identified, none saw a frequency above 10%. Focus groups and usability studies tied for the least frequently used method among the 307 articles, both at 2% (n=9). The keyword analysis focused on two categories, one for research article keywords and another for non-research article keywords, for all 1,880 articles identified. Non-research articles had less reliance on keywords, with authors reporting keywords appearing on 73% (n=1156). Within these, authors discovered 120 separate keywords used 10 or more times across non-research articles. The top ten keywords among non-research articles were reported as primarily related to books and publishing, with "non-fiction," "adult," and "libraries" as the top three. By comparison, research articles heavily favour the use of keywords, with 94% (n=290) of research articles having keywords. Analysis of the individual keywords found 56 keywords appearing 10 or more times across research articles. The top ten keywords are primarily practice related, with "information," "libraries," and "library" being the top three. When comparing shared keywords across both categories, the same top three keywords reported for research in the previous sentence apply to the collective set. Conclusion - The authors note that the nature and size of the local collection both benefited and limited this study. Compiling and maintaining a comprehensive list of LIS periodicals is a challenging task across a large body of potential sources. Within the resulting periodicals studied, a mere 16% of analyzed LIS literature met the criteria to qualify as research, and that only after the study had eliminated virtually all trade periodicals from the population. Had that trade literature been included, the percentage qualifying as research would have been even lower. The popularity of surveys as a research method among LIS research reflects other recent findings, though the frequency of studies falling into the general "other" category suggests that LIS research is changing. Based on this research, the authors conclude that there is still much to be learned from content analysis of literature published in LIS periodicals. The most relevant news is that the journal is going to be divided in two specific sections, devoted one to LIS, the other to Archival Sciences (the latter will welcome the Editorial Board and the scholarly tradition of the eminent Italian journal "Archivi & Computer"). The paper attempts to highlight key issues confronting library and information science journals published from India as experienced by the author during teaching and research besides being associated with some journals in different capacities. However, the concerns need further deliberation to ascertain valid reasons and for improvement of the journals as well as betterment of research and scholarship in information studies in the country.
