The Antarctic midge, Belgica antarctica, is a unique insect endemic to Antarctica. It has a 2-year life cycle, with larvae overwintering in two different instars and adults emerging the following summer. This seasonality is crucial for adaptation to Antarctica's harsh climates and ephemeral growing seasons; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We found that, under summer-like conditions, larvae could develop from egg to the fourth-instar larval stage without interruption, but they never pupated. Spontaneous developmental arrest at this stage suggests that they overwinter in obligate diapause, a genetically determined period of dormancy. The winter cold can terminate this diapause, and long-term cold exposure is more effective. Although this species can utilise two alternative cold tolerance strategies with diapause for overwintering, freezing was more successful than cryoprotective dehydration in allowing survival and developmental resumption in our experimental conditions. In contrast, the first three larval instars continued their development under the same conditions as the fourth-instar larvae. Although we do not exclude the possibility of facultative diapause, they likely overwinter in a quiescent state, an immediate developmental arrest in response to adversity, to maximise exploitation of the short Antarctic summer. Sociality is a complex phenomenon, able to influence multiple traits of an individual life history. In group-living mammals, sociality is likely to play a major role in the reproductive success of individuals. Here we investigate how sociality traits are associated to reproductive success in female Alpine marmots (Marmota marmota), a highly social and cooperative breeding ground squirrel distributed in the European Alps. We used social network analysis to calculate sociality metrics and hurdle generalized linear mixed models (hurdle GLMMs) to model the relationship between sociality metrics and reproductive success of individually tagged female Alpine marmots. Our results showed that centrality of a reproductive female within her social group and the number of social partners are positively related to reproductive success, while agonistic behavior was not related with reproduction. Our results highlight the importance of affiliative interactions with other group members in cooperative breeders, suggesting that in such systems female fitness could be more related to social cohesion than to costs of agonistic behaviors to maintain dominance status. Exposure to early life adversity is linked to detrimental fitness outcomes across taxa. Owing to the challenges of collecting longitudinal data, direct evidence for long-term fitness effects of early life adversity from long-lived species remains relatively scarce. Here, we test the effects of early life adversity on male and female longevity in a free-ranging population of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) on Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico. We leveraged six decades of data to quantify the relative importance of 10 forms of early life adversity for 6599 macaques. Individuals that experienced more early life adversity died earlier than those that experienced less adversity. Mortality risk was highest during early life, defined as birth to 4 years old, but heightened mortality risk was also present in macaques that survived to adulthood. Females and males were affected differently by some forms of adversity, and these differences might be driven by varying energetic demands and dispersal patterns. Our results show that the fitness consequences of early life adversity are not uniform across individuals but vary as a function of the type of adversity, timing and social context, and thus contribute to our limited but growing understanding of the evolution of early life sensitivities. No one is perfect, and organisms that perform well in some habitat or with respect to some tasks, do so at the cost of performance in others: there are inescapable trade‐offs. Organismal trade‐offs govern the structure and function of ecosystems and attempts to demonstrate and quantify trade‐offs have therefore been an important goal for ecologists. In addition, trade‐offs are a key component in trait‐based ecosystem models. Here, I synthesise evidence of trade‐offs in plankton organisms, from bacteria to zooplankton, and show how a slow–fast gradient in life histories emerges. I focus on trade‐offs related to the main components of an organism's Darwinian fitness, that is resource acquisition, survival, and propagation. All consumers need to balance the need to eat without being eaten, and diurnal vertical migration, where zooplankton hide at depth during the day to avoid visual predators but at the cost of missed feeding opportunities in the productive surface layer, is probably the best documented result of this trade‐off. However, there are many other more subtle but equally important behaviours that similarly are the result of an optimisation of these trade‐offs. Most plankton groups have also developed more explicit defence mechanisms, such as toxin production or evasive behaviours that are harnessed in the presence of their predators; the costs of these have often proved difficult to quantify or even demonstrate, partly because they only materialise under natural conditions. Finally, all multicellular organisms must allocate time and resources among growth, reproduction, and maintenance (e.g. protein turnover and DNA repair), and mate finding may compromise both survival and feeding. The combined effects of all these trade‐offs is the emergence of a slow–fast gradient in the pace‐of‐life, likely the most fundamental principle for the organisation of organismal life histories. Context-dependent allocation of resources drives trade-offs among fitness-related traits and other phenotypes to which those traits are linked. In addition, the amount and type of acquired resources can also affect the phenotypes of other organisms through indirect genetic effects, as exemplified by the maternal provisioning of offspring. Despite a large literature on maternal effects, we lack a comprehensive understanding of the extent to which mothers might affect the phenotypes of their offspring, as well as the various mechanisms by which they do so, particularly with regard to many functional traits that are key determinants of survival and reproduction. Our goals in this paper are to review the various approaches to measuring and understanding maternal effects and to highlight some promising avenues for integration of maternal effects with some other key areas of evolutionary ecology. We focus especially on nutritional geometry; maternal age; and traits proximate to fitness such as whole-organism performance. Finally, we discuss the logistic and practical limits of quantifying these effects in many animal systems and emphasize the value of integrative approaches in understanding the mechanisms underlying maternal influence on offspring phenotypes. Environmental factors and individual attributes, and their interactions, impact survival, growth and reproduction of an individual throughout its life. In the clonal rotifer Brachionus, low food conditions delay reproduction and extend lifespan. This species also exhibits maternal effect senescence; the offspring of older mothers have lower survival and reproductive output. In this paper, we explored the population consequences of the individual‐level interaction of maternal age and low food availability. We built matrix population models for both ad libitum and low food treatments, in which individuals are classified both by their age and maternal age. Low food conditions reduced population growth rate (Δλ=−0.0574$$ \Delta \lambda =-0.0574 $$) and shifted the population structure to older maternal ages, but did not detectably impact individual lifetime reproductive output. We analysed hypothetical scenarios in which reduced fertility or survival led to approximately stationary populations that maintained the shape of the difference in demographic rates between the ad libitum and low food treatments. When fertility was reduced, the populations were more evenly distributed across ages and maternal ages, while the lower‐survival models showed an increased concentration of individuals in the youngest ages and maternal ages. Using life table response experiment analyses, we compared populations grown under ad libitum and low food conditions in scenarios representing laboratory conditions, reduced fertility and reduced survival. In the laboratory scenario, the reduction in population growth rate under low food conditions is primarily due to decreased fertility in early life. In the lower‐fertility scenario, contributions from differences in fertility and survival are more similar, and show trade‐offs across both ages and maternal ages. In the lower‐survival scenario, the contributions from decreased fertility in early life again dominate the difference in λ$$ \lambda $$. These results demonstrate that processes that potentially benefit individuals (e.g. lifespan extension) may actually reduce fitness and population growth because of links with other demographic changes (e.g. delayed reproduction). Because the interactions of maternal age and low food availability depend on the population structure, the fitness consequences of an environmental change can only be fully understood through analysis that takes into account the entire life cycle. ABSTRACT Although efforts to estimate effective population size, census size and their ratio in wild populations are expanding, few empirical studies investigate interannual changes in these parameters. Hence, we do not know how repeatable or representative many estimates may be. Answering this question requires studies of long‐term population dynamics. Here we took advantage of a rich dataset of seven brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) populations, 5 consecutive years and 5400 individuals genotyped at 33 microsatellites to examine variation in estimates of effective and census size and in their ratio. We first estimated the annual effective number of breeders (N̂$$ \hat{N} $$b) using individuals aged 1+. We then adjusted these estimates using two life history traits, to obtain N̂badj2$$ {\hat{N}}_{b(adj2)} $$ and subsequently, N̂eadj2$$ {\hat{N}}_{e(adj2)} $$ following Waples et al. (2013). N̂eadj2$$ {\hat{N}}_{e(adj2)} $$ was estimated for the years 2014 to 2019. Census size was estimated by mark recapture using double‐pass electrofishing (N̂cMR$$ {\hat{N}}_{c(MR)} $$) (years 2014–2018) as well as by the Close Kin Mark Recapture approach (N̂cCKMR$$ {\hat{N}}_{c(CKMR)} $$) (years 2015–2017). Within populations, annual variation in N̂eadj2$$ {\hat{N}}_{e(adj2)} $$ (ratio of maximum to minimum N̂eadj2$$ {\hat{N}}_{e(adj2)} $$) ranged from 1.6‐fold to 58‐fold. Over all 7 populations, the median annual variation in N̂eadj2$$ {\hat{N}}_{e(adj2)} $$ was around 5‐fold. These results reflect important interannual changes in the variance in reproductive success and more generally in population dynamics. Within population N̂cMR$$ {\hat{N}}_{c(MR)} $$ varied between years by a (median) factor of 2.7 with a range from 2 to 4.3. Thus, estimated effective size varied nearly twice as much as did estimated census size. Our results therefore suggest that, at least in small populations like those examined in the present study, any single annual estimate of N̂eadj2$$ {\hat{N}}_{e(adj2)} $$ is unlikely to be representative of long‐term dynamics. At least 3–4 annual estimates may be required for an estimate of contemporary effective size to be truly representative. We then compared N̂cMR$$ {\hat{N}}_{c(MR)} $$ to N̂cCKMR$$ {\hat{N}}_{c(CKMR)} $$. For five of the seven populations, the estimates of population abundance based on mark recapture (N̂cMR$$ {\hat{N}}_{c(MR)} $$) were indistinguishable from those based on close kin mark recapture (N̂cCKMR$$ {\hat{N}}_{c(CKMR)} $$). The two populations with discordant N̂cMR$$ {\hat{N}}_{c(MR)} $$ and N̂cCKMR$$ {\hat{N}}_{c(CKMR)} $$ exhibited extremely low N̂eadj2/N̂cMR$$ {\hat{N}}_{e(adj2)}/{\hat{N}}_{c(MR)} $$ ratios and the largest annual variation in N̂eadj2$$ {\hat{\ N}}_{e(adj2)} $$ (58‐fold and 35.4‐fold respectively). These results suggest that sampling effort in these two streams may have been insufficient to properly capture the genetic diversity of the entire population and that individuals sampled were not representative of the population. Our study further validates CKMR as a method for estimating abundance in wild populations and it demonstrates how knowledge of the temporal variation in N̂e$$ {\hat{N}}_e $$ can be used to identify potential sources of discrepancies between N̂cMR$$ {\hat{N}}_{c(MR)} $$ and N̂cCKMR$$ {\hat{N}}_{c(CKMR)} $$. Pollen protein content has been demonstrated to be an essential nutritional component for bees and thus important in mediating plant–pollinator interactions. However, little is known on the drivers and consequences of among‐species variation in pollen protein content and how this can impact male and female reproductive success across plant species. Among‐species variation in resources allocated to pollen nutrition could further be constrained by life‐history strategies (e.g. survival‐reproduction trade‐offs) or evolutionary history. Here, we surveyed pollen protein content for 29 species within a diverse co‐flowering community and evaluated the effect of pollen protein on male and female reproductive success. We also tested the role of life history (annuals vs. perennials) and phylogeny in mediating differences in resource allocation to pollen nutrition. We found that pollen protein content influences components of male (bee visitor abundance and pollen dispersal) but not female (conspecific pollen deposition and pollen tube growth) reproductive success, suggesting this trait affects plants only via male function. This sex‐specific effect further suggests the potential for sexual conflicts driven by differential investment on this trait. We found no phylogenetic signal on pollen protein content. However, pollen protein content was higher in annual compared to perennial species suggesting survival versus reproduction trade‐offs also contribute to variation in pollen protein at the community level. Our study underscores the importance of understanding the ecological and evolutionary drivers of pollen protein content across plant species. Our results further suggest the existence of sexual conflicts and ecological trade‐offs mediated by differential investment in pollen nutritional quality, with important implications for community assembly and the structure of plant–pollinator interactions. Maternal age can influence reproductive success and offspring fitness, but the timing, magnitude and direction of those impacts are not well understood. Evolutionary theory predicts that selection on fertility senescence is stronger than maternal effect senescence, and therefore, the rate of maternal effect senescence will be faster than fertility senescence. We used a 36‐year study of northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) to investigate reproductive senescence. Our dataset included 103,746 sightings of 1203 known‐age female northern elephant seals. We hypothesized that fertility (maternal reproductive success), offspring survival and recruitment into the breeding population, and male offspring production would decline with advanced maternal age. Furthermore, we hypothesized that older females would shorten their moulting haul out to allow for more time spent foraging. We found evidence for both fertility and maternal effect senescence, but no evidence for senescence impacting offspring recruitment or sex ratio. Breeding probability declined from 96.4% (95% CI: 94.8%–97.5%) at 11 years old to 89.7% (81.9%–94.3%) at 19 years old, and the probability of offspring survival declined from 30.3% (23.6%–38.0%) at 11 years old to 9.1% (3.2%–22.9%) at 19 years old. The rates of decline for fertility and maternal effect senescence were not different from each other. However, maternal effect senescence had a substantially greater impact on the number of offspring surviving to age 1 compared to fertility senescence. Compared to a hypothetical non‐senescent population, maternal effect senescence resulted in 5.3% fewer surviving pups, whereas fertility senescence resulted in only 0.3% fewer pups produced per year. These results are consistent with evolutionary theory predicting weaker selection on maternal effect than fertility senescence. The evolution of sexual ornaments in animals is typically attributed to reproductive competition. However, sexual ornaments also arise in contexts where the ornamented sex is neither mate nor gamete limited, and explanations for ornamentation in these cases remain incomplete. In many species, particularly those with slow life histories, lifetime reproductive success depends more strongly on adult survival than fecundity, and survival can depend on intersexual interactions. We develop a population genetic model to investigate how the effect of intersexual interactions on survival may contribute to ornament evolution in the absence of competition for mates. Using female ornamentation in polygynous mating systems as a case study, we show that, indeed, ornaments can evolve when the ornament functions to modify interactions with males in ways that enhance a female's own survival. The evolutionary dynamics depend qualitatively on the specific behavioral mechanism by which the ornament modifies social interactions. In all cases, the ornament's long-term persistence is ultimately determined by the coevolution of the male locus that determines how males affect female survival. We outline the scenarios that are most likely to favor the evolution of female ornaments through the effects of intersexual interactions on survival, and we urge empirical researchers to consider the potential for this social selection mechanism to shape traits of interest across taxa. Quantifying trade‐offs within populations is important in life‐history theory. However, most studies focusing on life‐history trade‐offs focus on two traits and assume trade‐offs to be static. Our work provides a framework for understanding covariation among multiple traits and how population density influences the traits. Using detailed individual‐based data for Soay sheep, we find density strongly shapes life‐history trade‐offs and distribution of lifetime reproductive success (LRS). At low density, a trade‐off between juvenile survival and growth structures life‐history variation, whereas at equilibrium density, trade‐off between reproduction and juvenile survival is the major structuring axes. Contrary to Lomnicki's prediction, we find that at high density, there is little variation in the LRS over the sizes (large juveniles and adults) that contribute to reproduction. Our results advance an understanding of dynamic nature of trade‐offs offer insights into how high‐density limits diversity of individual life histories and have implications for evolution via density‐dependent selection. Reliable estimates of population abundance and demographics are essential for managing harvested species. Ice‐associated phocids, "ice seals," are a vital resource for subsistence‐dependent coastal Native communities in western and northern Alaska, USA. In 2012, the Beringia distinct population segment of the bearded seal, Erignathus barbatus nauticus, was listed as "threatened" under the US Endangered Species Act requiring greater scrutiny for management assessments. We sought to estimate requisite population parameters from harvested seals by using close‐kin mark‐recapture (CKMR) methods, the first such application for marine mammals. Samples from 1758 bearded seals harvested by Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Sea communities during 1998–2020 were genotyped, genetically sexed, and aged by tooth annuli. After rigorous quality control, kin relationships were established for 1484 seals including two parent–offspring pairs (POPs) and 25 potential second‐order kin pairs. Most of the second‐order kin were half‐sibling pairs (HSPs), but four were potential grandparent‐grandchild pairs (GGPs). There were no full sibling pairs, suggesting a lack of mate fidelity. Mitochondrial DNA analysis identified 17 potential HSPs as paternally related, providing substantial evidence of persistent heterogeneity in reproductive success among adult males. The statistical CKMR model incorporates probabilities associated with POPs, HSPs, and GGPs and assumes known ages and a stable population. Our top model accommodates heterogeneity in adult male breeding success and yields an abundance estimate of ~409,000 with a coefficient of variation (CV) = 0.35, which is substantially greater than the "non‐heterogeneity" model estimate of ~232,000 (CV = 0.21), an important difference for managing a harvested species. Using CKMR methods with harvested species provides estimates of abundance with the added opportunity to acquire information about adult survival, fecundity, and breeding success that could be applied to other species of concern, marine and terrestrial. Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in mediating life-history processes, where it can compromise survival and reproduction through harmful alterations to DNA, lipids, and proteins. In this study, we investigated oxidative stress in Cape ground squirrels (Xerus inauris), a longer-lived African ground squirrel species with a high reproductive skew and unique life history strategies. We measured oxidative stress as total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), and an oxidative stress index (OSI) in blood plasma from individuals of approximately known ages. Our results reveal a distinct pattern of decreasing oxidative stress with age, consistent across both sexes. Females exhibited lower OSI and TOS levels than males. Males employing different life-history strategies, namely natal (staying at home), had significantly lower oxidative stress compared to the band (roaming male groups), likely due to variations in metabolic rate, activity, and feeding rates. However, both strategies exhibited reduced oxidative stress with age, though the underlying mechanisms require further investigation. We propose that selection pressures favoring survival contributed to the observed reduction in oxidative stress with age, potentially maximizing lifetime reproductive success in this species. Numerous threats affect aquatic ecosystems at different biological organizational levels from individuals to ecosystems. Stresses occurring on the metabolism and physiological functions of individuals can have repercussions on the individual behavior, its ability to survive and reproduce, also known as the individual fitness, which may then influence the demography and spatial distribution of populations, and ultimately modify trophic flows and ecosystem functioning. In a context of a globally changing environment, predicting the life history traits and fitness of individuals can be relevantly performed with the association of laboratory experiments with Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory, while modeling species interactions have proven to be an efficient tool to understand aquatic food webs using mass-balanced models such as linear inverse models (LIMs) or Chance and Necessity (CaN) models. However, while predictive results obtained on individuals can be provided with a thorough mechanistic interpretation, the propagation of the effects is most often limited to the closest biological hierarchical level, i.e., the population, and rarely to the food-web level. Furthermore, there is a need to understand how to avoid misleading approaches and interpretations due to the simplicity of experiments. For the moment, no clear methodology has stood out yet to do so. In this study, we provide a new methodology based on a combination of models (i.e., DEB, LIM, and CaN) aiming at upscaling information from laboratory experiments on individuals to ecosystems to address multiple ecological issues. This framework has a potential to enhance our understanding of higher-scale consequences of the effect of stressors measured at the sub-individual scale. This combination of models was chosen for the convergence of their framework but also their ability to consider a substantial portion of the projected uncertainty. The description of this methodology can help experimenters and modelers to jointly address a specific question involving upscaling from individual to ecosystem, proposes approaches, and gives tips on the pitfalls to avoid along the upscaling process. Aggressive interactions can strongly influence an animal's performance in subsequent contests. Winners of aggressive contests are more likely to win successive contests and losers are more likely to lose successive contests. Such winner and loser effects can significantly influence an animal's dominance status, ability to acquire resources and reproductive success. Thus, quantifying the magnitudes of winner and loser effects across taxa is important for our understanding of hierarchy formation, life history trade-offs and reproductive tactics in different species. Furthermore, it is unclear whether the magnitude of winner effects differ from that of loser effects. Finally, experimenters often employ one of two distinct methods for quantifying the strength of winner and loser effects: self-selection and random assignment. Due to selection bias, it is possible that self-selection protocols overestimate the magnitude of winner and loser effects. We therefore systematically searched the literature to conduct a comprehensive meta-analysis of winner and loser effects. We analysed a total of 168 effect sizes from arachnids, crustaceans, fishes, insects, mammals and reptiles. We found that prior winners tend to win approximately two-thirds of their subsequent fights, while prior losers tend to lose approximately two-thirds of their subsequent fights. While we did not find that studies using self-selection generated effect size estimates that significantly differed from random assignment protocols, future studies should still avoid self-selection protocols. For organisms in temperate environments, seasonal variation in resource availability and weather conditions exert fluctuating selection pressures on survival and fitness, resulting in diverse adaptive responses. By manipulating resource availability on a local spatial scale, we studied seasonal patterns of resource use within natural populations of burying beetles Nicrophorus vespilloides in a Norfolk woodland. Burying beetles are necrophagous insects that breed on vertebrate carcasses. They are active in Europe between April and October, after which they burrow into the soil and overwinter. Using breeding and chemical analyses, we compared the fecundity and physiological state of beetles that differed in their seasonal resource use. We found seasonal variation in carrion use by wild burying beetles and correlated differences in their reproductive success and cuticular hydrocarbon profiles. Mutualisms constitute a diverse class of ecologically important interactions, yet their ecological and evolutionary stability remain topics of debate in coevolutionary theory. Recent theoretical and empirical work has suggested that coevolutionary arms races may be involved in the maintenance of mutualistic interactions, sustaining mutually beneficial outcomes for interacting species while producing exaggerated traits. Here we present an individual-based model that evaluates how asynchronous life histories—that is, partners with different average lifespans—change the dynamics of trait coevolution, the expected fitness outcomes for species involved, and the dynamics of selection differentials across time for each species. Results indicate that a longer-lived mutualist will consistently "lose" an otherwise balanced coevolutionary arms race, being outpaced in both the mean trait value and fitness outcome compared with a shorter-lived partner. Furthermore, linear selection differentials on mutualistic traits become increasingly divergent as life histories become increasingly asynchronous, with the longer-lived species experiencing persistent directional selection and the shorter-lived species experiencing weaker, more inconsistent selection. These results suggest that asynchronous life histories can complicate the maintenance of mutualistic interactions via coevolutionary arms races and that detecting coevolution via selection differentials may be difficult when life histories are sufficiently divergent. The efficient conversion of tissues into reproductive success is a crucial aspect affecting the evolution of life histories. Masting, the interannually variable and synchronous seed production in perennial plants, is a strategy that can enhance reproductive efficiency by mitigating seed predation and pollen limitation. However, evaluating benefits is insufficient to establish whether efficiency has improved, as such assessments neglect the associated costs of masting, particularly during the critical seed‐to‐seedling stage. We conducted a parentage analysis of seedlings and adults in a population of 209 Sorbus aucuparia trees, monitored over 23 years, providing pioneering documentation of the effects of masting on the fitness of individual trees beyond the seed stage. Our results show high costs of interannual variation that can be mitigated by high synchrony and reveal the existence of phenotypes that appear to reap the benefits of masting while avoiding its costs through regular reproduction. Flowers of Salvia are characterized by a diversity of staminal lever types mediating pollen transfer. In the East Asian subgenus Glutinaria, species have been categorized based on their distinct flower and stamen morphologies. A hypothesized advantage of degraded-lever types suggests they may optimize pollinator foraging time, increase visitation rates, and potentially trigger autonomous self-pollination. However, this hypothesis remains untested. Here, Salvia castanea, S. miltiorrhiza, and S. liguliloba were selected as test species representing the three major flower and stamen types of the East Asian sages. We compared the species with regard to their inflorescence architecture, floral display, nectar reward, pollinator efficiency, and seed set. We found that S. liguliloba had a degraded-lever type that significantly reduced pollinator foraging time did not significantly increase pollination efficiency. These species have a mixed mating pattern with high seed set, no pollen- or pollinator limitation, and no inbreeding depression. We conclude that the diversity of floral traits is addressed to pollinators, whereas reproductive success emerges from a complex interplay of factors encompassing floral characteristics, pollination efficiency, plant life history, or/and other biotic and abiotic factors. Life history studies support the fast–slow continuum as the dominant but not unique axis structuring life history variation. Other important axes of life history variation associated with development and reproductive tactics exist, and exploration of further axes, clusters, and boundaries of life history variation is needed. Existing life history analyses are venturing far from theory and could benefit from a stronger focus on hypothesis testing rather than exploration. We make recommendations to identify the structuring axes of life history variation through data choices and analytical methods of dimensionality reduction with recourse to a comprehensive model of life history. Life history strategies, which combine schedules of survival, development, and reproduction, shape how natural selection acts on species' heritable traits and organismal fitness. Comparative analyses have historically ranked life histories along a fast–slow continuum, describing a negative association between time allocation to reproduction and development versus survival. However, higher-quality, more representative data and analyses have revealed that life history variation cannot be fully accounted for by this single continuum. Moreover, studies often do not test predictions from existing theories and instead operate as exploratory exercises. To move forward, we offer three recommendations for future investigations: standardizing life history traits, overcoming taxonomic siloes, and using theory to move from describing to understanding life history variation across the Tree of Life. Climate resilience, a focus of many recent studies, has been examined from ecological, physiological, and evolutionary perspectives. However, sampling biases toward adults, males, and certain species have made establishing the link between environmental change and population-level change problematic. Here, we used data from four laboratory studies, in which we administered pre- and postnatal stressors, such as suboptimal incubation temperature, heat stress, and food restriction, to zebra finches. We then quantified hatching success, posthatch survival, and reproductive success, to parameterize age-structured population dynamics models with the goal of estimating the effect of the stressors on relative population growth rates. Using the same model structure, we tested the hypothesis that early life stages influence population growth rate more than later life stages. Our models suggested that stressful events during embryonic development, such as suboptimal incubation temperatures and reduced gas exchange for the embryos, have a greater total impact on population growth than posthatch stressors, such as heat stress and food restriction. However, among life history traits, differences in hatching success and sex ratio of offspring in response to stressors changed population growth rates more than differences in any other demographic rate estimates. These results suggest that when predicting population resilience against climate change, it is critical to account for effects of climate change on all life stages, including early stages of life, and to incorporate individuals' physiology and stress tolerance that likely influence future stress responses, reproduction, and survival. Explaining variation in individual fitness is a key goal in evolutionary biology. Recently, telomeres, repeating DNA sequences capping chromosome ends, have gained attention as a biomarker for body state, physiological costs, and senescence. Existing research has provided mixed evidence for whether telomere length correlates with fitness, including survival and reproductive output. Moreover, few studies have examined how the rate of change in telomere length correlates with fitness in wild populations. Here, we intensively monitored an insular population of house sparrows, and collected longitudinal telomere and life history data (16 years, 1225 individuals). We tested whether telomere length and its rate of change predict fitness measures, namely survival, lifespan and annual and lifetime reproductive effort and success. Telomere length positively predicted short‐term survival, independent of age, but did not predict lifespan, suggesting either a diminishing telomere length—survival correlation with age or other extrinsic factors of mortality. The positive association of telomere length with survival translated into reproductive benefits, as birds with longer telomeres produced more genetic recruits, hatchlings and reared more fledglings over their lifetime. In contrast, there was no association between telomere dynamics and annual reproductive output, suggesting telomere dynamics might not reflect the costs of reproduction in this population, potentially masked by variation in individual quality. The rate of change of telomere length did not correlate with neither lifespan nor lifetime reproductive success. Our results provide further evidence that telomere length correlates with fitness, and contribute to our understanding of the selection on, and evolution of, telomere dynamics. Why offspring size and number vary in diverse ways with adult body size is little understood. In my comparative analysis of animal taxa, I show that age-specific mortality predicts the interspecific body-mass (BM) scaling of offspring (egg, embryo, or neonate) mass (OM) and number per clutch (CS) with striking accuracy. Across six animal taxa, the mean ratio of juvenile to adult mortality (mj/ma) explains 80% and 88% of the variation in BM scaling slopes for OM and CS, respectively. Animal taxa with high parental care and low mj/ma ratios tend to exhibit steeper OM scaling and shallower CS scaling than taxa with low parental care and high mj/ma ratios. Even the curvature of OM scaling in logarithmic space can be predicted approximately by the difference in the BM scaling slopes of juvenile and adult mortality rates. The overall triangular pattern of variation in OM in relation to BM in animals can be understood in terms of body-size dependent variation in mj/ma, as well. These results are explained by an 'age-specific mortality hypothesis', which posits that OM and CS scaling slopes are functions of the relative emphasis of natural selection on offspring versus parental fitness. Therefore, I recommend that future studies of the body-size scaling of life-history traits should include estimates of age-specific mortality. Dispersal is an important facet of the life history of many organisms and is, therefore, subject to selective pressure but does not evolve in isolation. Across nature, there are examples of dispersal syndromes and life history strategies in which suites of traits coevolve and covary with dispersal in combinations that serve to maximize fitness in a given ecological context. The red rust flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, is a model organism and globally significant post-harvest pest that relies on dispersal to reach new patches of ephemeral habitat. Dispersal behaviour in Tribolium has a strong genetic basis. However, a robust understanding of the relationship between dispersal and other life-history components, which could elucidate evolutionary processes and allow pest managers to control their spread and reduce the impact of infestation, is currently lacking. Here, we use highly replicated lines of T. castaneum previously artificially selected for divergent small-scale dispersal propensity to robustly test several important life history components: reproductive strategy, development time, and longevity. As predicted, we find that a suite of important changes as a result of our selection on dispersal: high dispersal propensity is associated with a lower number of longer mating attempts by males, lower investment in early life reproduction by females, slower development of later-laid offspring, and longer female life span. These findings indicate that correlated intraspecific variation in dispersal and related traits may represent alternative life history strategies in T. castaneum. We therefore suggest that pest management efforts to mitigate the species' agro-economic impact should consider the eco-evolutionary dynamics within multiple life histories. The benefits of doing so could be felt both through improved targeting of efforts to reduce spread and also in forecasting how the selection pressures applied through pest management are likely to affect pest evolution. Evolutionary fitness is determined by how an organism allocates energy, or other limited resources, to reproduction during its lifetime. For iteroparous organisms, two alternative patterns of lifetime reproductive allocation are terminal investment and reproductive restraint. Terminal investment maximizes an individual's current reproductive output by allocating all available resources to current reproduction at the cost of future reproduction. In contrast, the reproductive restraint strategy allocates the individual's resources toward future survival and reproductive events. We used dynamic state variable modeling to investigate the conditions under which the burying beetle, Nicrophorus orbicollis, would balance between reproductive restraint and terminal investment over their lifetime. Our model provides a formal extension, specific to burying beetle biology, of the dynamic terminal investment threshold conceptual model. For young females, we show that delayed reproduction and reproductive restraint are the optimal tactic for all individuals except for those in the highest condition. However, as age increases, terminal investment becomes the optimal tactic over an increasingly broader range of individual conditions. Surprisingly, manipulation of a variety of factors, such as survival rate, resource availability, and metabolic costs, causes only minor changes in the general pattern observed. We suggest that in burying beetles, and other similar organisms, age plays a dominant role in determining the pattern of reproductive allocation over a lifetime. Individual energetic condition is important in changing the boundaries between alternative reproductive strategies, but it does not change the overall pattern of dominance of delayed reproduction or reproductive restraint at early ages and dominance of terminal investment with increasing age. Significance statement: In this model of the dynamic terminal investment threshold, age is the dominant determinant of reproductive allocation over a lifetime. Differences in survival rate, resource availability, and metabolic costs result in only slight adjustments to the optimal reproductive allocation strategy. Our model predicts the coexistence of multiple reproductive strategies and suggests that patterns of reproductive allocation identified for burying beetles may be broadly applicable across diverse taxa (e.g., insect parasitoids, altricial birds) that share similar life history characteristics and constraints with burying beetles. Furthermore, even in species that exhibit dramatically different life histories from burying beetles (e.g., long-lived, indeterminate growth, absence of reproductive senescence) this approach of dynamic state variable modeling shows potential for characterizing and comparing lifetime reproductive allocation patterns. Plant's life history can evolve in response to variation in climate spatio‐temporally, but numerous multiple‐species studies overlook species‐specific (especially a foundation species) ecological effects and genetic underpinnings. For a species to successfully invade a region, likely to become a foundation species, life‐history variation of invasive plants exerts considerable ecological and evolutionary impacts on invaded ecosystems. We examined how an invasive foundation plant, Spartina alterniflora, varied in its life history along latitudinal gradient using a common gardens experiment. Two common gardens were located at range boundary in tropical zone and main distribution area of S. alterniflora in temperate zone in China. Within each population/garden, we measured the onset time of three successive phenological stages constituting the reproductive phase and a fitness trait. In the low‐latitude garden with higher temperature, we found that reproductive phase was advanced and its length prolonged compared to the high‐latitude garden. This could possibly due to lower plasticity of maturity time. Additionally, plasticity in the length of the reproductive phase positively related with fitness in the low‐latitude garden. Marginal population from tropic had the lowest plasticity and fitness, and the poor capacity to cope with changing environment may result in reduction of this population. These results reflected genetic divergence in life history of S. alterniflora in China. Our study provided a novel view to test the center–periphery hypothesis by integration across a plant's life history and highlighted the significance in considering evolution. Such insights can help us to understand long‐term ecological consequences of life‐history variation, with implications for plant fitness, species interaction, and ecosystem functions under climate change. The reproductive biology of the branching octocoral Antillogorgia americana was studied at a site on the Caribbean coast of Panama in 1990–1991 by examining the reproductive status of 11 colonies across 14 months. Colonies were gonochoric. The presence of large and mature eggs or spermaries was allochronic across colonies and months, with peak gonad volumes occurring in months ranging from October through May. Reproductive effort varied between branches on a colony, with variation between branches and branchlets accounting for 25% of the random variation between polyps. Branchlets at the tip of the colony had fewer mature eggs than those lower on the branch, and polyps at the tips of the branchlets had fewer still. Although the simultaneous release of eggs and sperm is critical to reproductive success, the lack of synchrony among colonies on the scale of months may reflect less need for all colonies to spawn in a single event among abundant species that release large numbers of gametes. Such a strategy also spreads the risk of reproductive failure due to environmental conditions during any single month. The presence of multiple spawning episodes can also drive the reproductive isolation of populations and may reflect the presence of cryptic species within the taxon. Inbreeding depression, the loss of offspring fitness due to consanguineous mating, is generally detrimental for individual performance and population viability. We investigated inbreeding effects in a declining population of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) at Bird Island, South Georgia. Here, localised warming has reduced the availability of the seal's staple diet, Antarctic krill, leading to a temporal increase in the strength of selection against inbred offspring, which are increasingly failing to recruit into the adult breeding population. However, it remains unclear whether selection operates before or after nutritional independence at weaning. We therefore used microsatellite data from 885 pups and their mothers, and SNP array data from 98 mother–offspring pairs, to quantify the effects of individual and maternal inbreeding on three important neonatal fitness traits: birth mass, survival and growth. We did not find any clear or consistent effects of offspring or maternal inbreeding on any of these traits. This suggests that selection filters inbred individuals out of the population as juveniles during the time window between weaning and recruitment. Sexual dimorphism reveals a broad variation in morphological, physiological, and behavioral traits related to organismal life strategies. Anurans are particularly suitable for studying the origin, integration, and diversification of sexual dimorphism, owing to the high degree of variation observed in size and secondary sexual characteristics, as well as the diversity of life histories and their complex biphasic cycle. In this study, a morphometric characterization of Leptodactylus luctator is conducted to investigate whether sexual dimorphism is present. A total of 18 variables were measured in the head, body, and limbs of males and females from a population located in wetlands near Ucacha town, Córdoba Province, Argentina. Leptodactylus luctator exhibited more robust limbs in males, but longer fingers in females. Furthermore, females showed a greater axilla-groin length, indicating differences in body shape between sexes in addition to size. Given that larger forelimbs in males have been associated, in the literature, with greater reproductive success, while finger length has been correlated with different levels of circulating sex hormones, the possible selection pressures related to the observed variation are discussed herein. Species' persistence in increasingly variable climates will depend on resilience against the fitness costs of environmental stochasticity. Most organisms host microbiota that shield against stressors. Here, we test the hypothesis that, by limiting exposure to temporally variable stressors, microbial symbionts reduce hosts' demographic variance. We parameterized stochastic population models using data from a 14‐year symbiont‐removal experiment including seven grass species that host Epichloë fungal endophytes. Results provide novel evidence that symbiotic benefits arise not only through improved mean fitness, but also through dampened inter‐annual variance. Hosts with "fast" life‐history traits benefited most from symbiont‐mediated demographic buffering. Under current climate conditions, contributions of demographic buffering were modest compared to benefits to mean fitness. However, simulations of increased stochasticity amplified benefits of demographic buffering and made it the more important pathway of host–symbiont mutualism. Dietary variation in males and females can shape the expression of offspring life histories and physiology. However, the relative contributions of maternal and paternal dietary variation to phenotypic expression of latter generations is currently unknown. We provided male and female Drosophila melanogaster grandparents with diets differing in sucrose concentration prior to reproduction, and similarly subjected their grandoffspring to the same treatments. We then investigated the phenotypic consequences of this dietary variation among the grandsons and granddaughters. We observed transgenerational effects of dietary sucrose, mediated through the grandmaternal lineage, which mimic the direct effects of sucrose on lifespan, with opposing patterns across sexes; low sucrose increased female, but decreased male, lifespan. Dietary mismatching of grandoffspring–grandparent diets increased lifespan and reproductive success, and moderated triglyceride levels of grandoffspring, providing insights into the physiological underpinnings of the complex transgenerational effects on life histories. Many tropical species show declining populations. The pantropical order Trogoniformes has 76% of its species ranked as declining, reflecting a worldwide problem. Here, we report on the reproductive ecology and life history traits of the declining and near‐threatened old world Whitehead's Trogon (Harpactes whiteheadi), the declining new world Collared Trogon (Trogon collaris), and the stable Masked Trogon (T. personatus). We also reviewed the literature on reproductive ecology and life history traits of trogons to assess possible commonalities that might help explain population declines. We found that the declining Whitehead's and Collared Trogons had reasonable nest success (32% and 25%, respectively), while the stable Masked Trogon had poor reproductive success (9%), all contrary to population trends. However, the limited literature data suggested that poor reproductive success may be common among trogons, which may contribute to population declines. Parents fed young at a low rate and had long on‐bouts for incubation and nestling warming that reduced activity at the nest, as favored by high nest predation risk over evolutionary time. We found that young fledged from the nest with poorly developed wings, as also favored by high nest predation risk. Evolved nestling periods among trogon species suggests that poor wing development is likely common. Wing development has been shown to affect juvenile survival after leaving the nest. The poor wing development may be an important contributor to population declines that deserves more attention. Developmental time is a fundamental life history trait that affects the reproductive success of animals. Developmental time is known to be regulated by many genes and environmental conditions, yet mechanistic understandings of how various cellular processes influence the developmental timing of an organism are lacking. The nervous system is known to control key processes that affect developmental time, including the release of hormones that signal transitions between developmental stages. Here we show that the excitability of neurons plays a crucial role in modulating developmental time. Genetic manipulation of neuronal excitability in Drosophila melanogaster alters developmental time, which is faster in animals with increased neuronal excitability. We find that selectively modulating the excitability of peptidergic neurons is sufficient to alter developmental time, suggesting the intriguing hypothesis that the impact of neuronal excitability on DT may be at least partially mediated by peptidergic regulation of hormone release. This effect of neuronal excitability on developmental time is seen during embryogenesis and later developmental stages. Observed phenotypic plasticity in the effect of genetically increasing neuronal excitability at different temperatures, a condition also known to modulate excitability, suggests there is an optimal level of neuronal excitability, in terms of shortening DT. Mammals that cope with harsh environmental conditions by hibernating show seasonal variation in body mass, as fat reserves are accumulated during summer and depleted during winter. In hibernating species, pre-hibernation mass is often considered a key phenotypic trait that can influence future survival and reproductive success—yet we know little about how variation in environmental conditions and seasonality affect pre-hibernation mass. We used 30 years of demographic data from a high-elevation population of golden-mantled ground squirrels (Callospermophilus lateralis) to identify life history and environmental variables that influenced pre-hibernation mass in females. Additionally, we determined if pre-hibernation mass influenced overwinter survival or subsequent reproduction. Growth curves revealed female-biased size dimorphism in body mass; adult mass was not attained until age 2 years, so we considered 3 age classes of females: juveniles, yearlings, and adults (≥2 years). We found that earlier snow melt during spring is associated with higher subsequent pre-hibernation body mass for yearlings and adults, and that juveniles emerging earlier from their natal burrows had higher pre-hibernation masses than later-emerging juveniles. Estimates of food quantity or quality did not affect pre-hibernation mass for any age class, nor was there an effect of reproductive status. Juvenile females with greater pre-hibernation mass were more likely to survive overwinter and reproduce as yearlings, but we found no such effect for yearlings or adult females. We did not find an effect of snow depth or winter duration on either survival or reproduction. Our results indicate that time appears to be the key variable for golden-mantled ground squirrels to acquire sufficient body mass to survive and reproduce, but the effects vary by age class. Local adaptation is commonly cited to explain species distribution, but how fitness varies along continuous geographical gradients is not well understood. Here, we combine thermal biology and life‐history theory to demonstrate that Drosophila populations along a 2500 km latitudinal cline are adapted to local conditions. We measured how heat tolerance and viability rate across eight populations varied with temperature in the laboratory and then simulated their expected cumulative Darwinian fitness employing high‐resolution temperature data from their eight collection sites. Simulations indicate a trade‐off between annual survival and cumulative viability, as both mortality and the recruitment of new flies are predicted to increase in warmer regions. Importantly, populations are locally adapted and exhibit the optimal combination of both traits to maximize fitness where they live. In conclusion, our method is able to reconstruct fitness surfaces employing empirical life‐history estimates and reconstructs peaks representing locally adapted populations, allowing us to study geographic adaptation in silico. Simple Summary: The maternal care behavior of the predatory mite Cheyletus eruditus (Schrank) and its impact on offspring survival and competition were investigated. The findings revealed that females exhibited egg-guarding behaviors, with increased maternal care efforts when interspecific competitors were present. The study demonstrated that egg masses were more vulnerable to predation in the absence of females, highlighting the importance of maternal care behaviors for offspring survival. Furthermore, the presence of guarding females increased egg survival rates and negatively impacted the survival of both conspecific and heterospecific competitors, resulting in higher mortality rates. These results emphasize the ecological significance of maternal care behaviors of C. eruditus and provide valuable insights for pest management with predatory mites. Parental care behavior has evolved as a life history strategy to improve reproductive success, particularly in organisms facing challenging environments. However, the variation in maternal care, such as egg-guarding behavior in response to the social environment and the associated ecological consequence of competition, remains largely unknown. This study addresses a gap in current knowledge by examining the plasticity of maternal care behavior in the predatory mite C. eruditus and its impact on offspring survival and intra- and interspecific competition. Our results demonstrated that the reproductive females frequently exhibit egg-guarding behaviors, with enhanced maternal care efforts when the interspecific competitor is present. Egg masses are significantly more vulnerable to predation in the absence of maternal care. Guarding females increased egg survival rates and adversely influenced the survival of both con- and heterospecific competitors, with higher mortality rates being detected. Our findings highlight the ecological significance of maternal care behaviors and suggest that releasing C. eruditus and Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) together is not recommended for pest management in storage products. The increasing use of artificial light at night (ALAN) is an anthropogenic disturbance with eco-evolutionary consequences for both nocturnal and diurnal organisms. It has been hypothesized that light pollution could create a 'night-light' niche providing new opportunities for diurnal organisms to forage and reproduce at night, with fitness consequences still scarcely explored. We exposed diurnal parasitoid wasps (Venturia canescens) to control (0 lx), low (0.7 lx) or high (20 lx) intensity of light at night throughout their lives and monitored changes in behavioural and life history traits. Light pollution influenced the night-time activity of wasps, with increased feeding and egg laying at night and a tendency for higher night-time reproductive success under a high intensity of light pollution. Surprisingly, high light pollution also increased the wasps' life span. Light pollution did not significantly affect lifetime reproductive success but did affect the distribution of ovipositions between day and night. Additionally, we showed that reproductive senescence occurred in V. canescens and that offspring development time was influenced by light pollution, in interaction with maternal age. These findings highlight the use of the 'night-light' niche in a diurnal insect exposed to light pollution, with potential implications for population dynamics, especially in natural conditions. • Light at night led to behavioural changes in the diurnal wasp Venturia canescens. • Night-time feeding and egg laying increased in the presence of light at night. • Lifetime reproductive success was not influenced by light pollution. • Light at night also modulated reproductive senescence in this species. Heterothermy is considered to be the most effective energy-saving strategy improving survival under natural conditions. Interspecific studies suggest that this strategy is also associated with reduced reproductive output. Yet little is known about the reproductive consequences of heterothermy use at the intraspecific level and thus its repercussions for microevolutionary processes. Moreover, as yet no study has aimed to test if litter size and juvenile mass are affected by torpor use in wild captured animals under undemanding laboratory conditions. Here we tested the hypothesis that intraspecific variation in heterothermy use is associated with different reproductive successes, being the result of the evolution of distinct life histories. We predicted that heterothermy use in winter negatively correlates with litter size and juvenile body mass during the subsequent breeding season. To test this prediction, we used yellow-necked mice from a population in which individuals consistently differ in their use of heterothermy in winter. We measured body size (head width) and body mass, basal metabolic rate, as well as metabolism and body temperature during fasting-induced torpor in wild caught mice in winter. Phenotyped mice were bred in the subsequent summer selectively - males and females with similar heterothermy characteristics were paired, the most to the least heterothermic. Dam body size, but not basal metabolism, was positively correlated with litter size (but not juvenile mass). However, when accounting for this relationship, litter size was negatively while juvenile mass was positively correlated with the average heterothermy use of a given couple. Lifetime fitness and its determinants are an important topic in the study of behavioral ecology and life-history evolution. Early life conditions comprise some of these determinants, warranting further investigation into their impact. In some mammals, babies born lighter tend to have lower life expectancy than those born heavier, and some of these life-history traits are passed on to offspring, with lighter-born females giving birth to lighter offspring. We investigated how weight at weaning, the relative timing of birth in the season, maternal weight, and maternal age affected the longevity and lifetime reproductive success (LRS) of female Columbian ground squirrels (Urocitellus columbianus). We hypothesized that early life conditions such as offspring weight would not only have lifetime fitness consequences but also intergenerational effects. We found that weight at weaning had a significant impact on longevity, with heavier individuals living longer. The relative timing of an individual's birth did not have a significant association with either longevity or LRS. Individuals born to heavier mothers were found to have significantly higher LRS than those born to lighter mothers. Finally, maternal age was found to be significantly associated with their offspring's LRS, with older mothers having less successful offspring. Predation risk can influence behavior, reproductive investment, and, ultimately, individuals' fitness. In high-risk environments, females often reduce allocation to reproduction, which can affect offspring phenotype and breeding success. In cooperative breeders, helpers contribute to feed the offspring, and groups often live and forage together. Helpers can, therefore, improve reproductive success, but also influence breeders' condition, stress levels and predation risk. Yet, whether helper presence can buffer the effects of predation risk on maternal reproductive allocation remains unstudied. Here, we used the cooperatively breeding sociable weaver Philetairus socius to test the interactive effects of predation risk and breeding group size on maternal allocation to clutch size, egg mass, yolk mass, and yolk corticosterone. We increased perceived predation risk before egg laying using playbacks of the adults' main predator, gabar goshawk (Micronisus gabar). We also tested the interactive effects of group size and prenatal predator playbacks on offspring hatching and fledging probability. Predator-exposed females laid eggs with 4% lighter yolks, but predator-calls' exposure did not clearly affect clutch size, egg mass, or egg corticosterone levels. Playback-treatment effects on yolk mass were independent of group size, suggesting that helpers' presence did not mitigate predation risk effects on maternal allocation. Although predator-induced reductions in yolk mass may decrease nutrient availability to offspring, potentially affecting their survival, playback-treatment effects on hatching and fledging success were not evident. The interplay between helper presence and predator effects on maternal reproductive investment is still an overlooked area of life history and physiological evolutionary trade-offs that requires further studies. The fitness of immigrants and their descendants produced within recipient populations fundamentally underpins the genetic and population dynamic consequences of immigration. Immigrants can in principle induce contrasting genetic effects on fitness across generations, reflecting multifaceted additive, dominance, and epistatic effects. Yet full multigenerational and sex-specific fitness effects of regular immigration have not been quantified within naturally structured systems, precluding inference on underlying genetic architectures and population outcomes. We used four decades of song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) life history and pedigree data to quantify fitness of natural immigrants, natives, and their F1, F2, and backcross descendants and test for evidence of nonadditive genetic effects. Values of key fitness components (including adult lifetime reproductive success and zygote survival) of F1 offspring of immigrant-native matings substantially exceeded their parent mean, indicating strong heterosis. Meanwhile, F2 offspring of F1-F1 matings had notably low values, indicating surprisingly strong epistatic breakdown. Furthermore, magnitudes of effects varied among fitness components and differed between female and male descendants. These results demonstrate that strong nonadditive genetic effects on fitness can arise within weakly structured and fragmented populations experiencing frequent natural immigration. Variation in life history traits in animals and plants can often be structured along major axes of life history strategies. The position of a species along these axes can inform on their sensitivity to environmental change. For example, species with slow life histories are found to be less sensitive in their long‐term population responses to environmental change than species with fast life histories.This provides a tantalizing link between sets of traits and population responses to change, contained in a highly generalizable theoretical framework.Life history strategies are assumed to reflect the outcome of life history tradeoffs that, by their very nature, act at the individual level. Examples include the tradeoff between current and future reproductive success, and allocating energy into growth versus reproduction. But the importance of such tradeoffs in structuring population‐level responses to environmental change remains understudied.We aim to increase our understanding of the link between individual‐level life history tradeoffs and the structuring of life history strategies across species, as well as the underlying links to population responses to environmental change.We find that the classical association between lifehistory strategies and population responses to environmental change breaks down when accounting for individual‐level tradeoffs and energy allocation.Therefore, projecting population responses to environmental change should not be inferred based only on a limited set of species traits.We summarize our perspective and a way forward in a conceptual framework. Close-kin mark-recapture (CKMR) is a method analogous to traditional mark-recapture but without requiring recapture of individuals. Instead, multilocus genotypes (genetic marks) are used to identify related individuals in one or more sampling occasions, which enables the opportunistic use of samples from harvested wildlife. To apply the method accurately, it is important to build appropriate CKMR models that do not violate assumptions linked to the species' and population's biology and sampling methods. In this study, we evaluated the implications of fitting overly simplistic CKMR models to populations with complex reproductive success dynamics or selective sampling. We used forward-in-time, individual-based simulations to evaluate the accuracy and precision of CKMR abundance and survival estimates in species with different longevities, mating systems, and sampling strategies. Simulated populations approximated a range of life histories among game species of North America with lethal sampling to evaluate the potential of using harvested samples to estimate population size. Our simulations show that CKMR can yield nontrivial biases in both survival and abundance estimates, unless influential life history traits and selective sampling are explicitly accounted for in the modeling framework. The number of kin pairs observed in the sample, in combination with the type of kinship used in the model (parent-offspring pairs and/or half-sibling pairs), can affect the precision and/or accuracy of the estimates. CKMR is a promising method that will likely see an increasing number of applications in the field as costs of genetic analysis continue to decline. Our work highlights the importance of applying population-specific CKMR models that consider relevant demographic parameters, individual covariates, and the protocol through which individuals were sampled. Metabolism energizes all biological processes, and its tempo may importantly influence the ecological success and evolutionary fitness of organisms. Therefore, understanding the broad variation in metabolic rate that exists across the living world is a fundamental challenge in biology. To further the development of a more reliable and holistic picture of the causes of this variation, we review several examples of how various intrinsic (biological) and extrinsic (environmental) factors (including body size, cell size, activity level, temperature, predation and other diverse genetic, cellular, morphological, physiological, behavioural and ecological influences) can interactively affect metabolic rate in synergistic or antagonistic ways. Most of the interactive effects that have been documented involve body size, temperature or both, but future research may reveal additional 'hub factors'. Our review highlights the complex, intimate inter-relationships between physiology and ecology, knowledge of which can shed light on various problems in both disciplines, including variation in physiological adaptations, life histories, ecological niches and various organism-environment interactions in ecosystems. We also discuss theoretical and practical implications of interactive effects on metabolic rate and provide suggestions for future research, including holistic system analyses at various hierarchical levels of organization that focus on interactive proximate (functional) and ultimate (evolutionary) causal networks. Understanding how natural selection drives diversification in nature has been at the forefront of biological research for over a century. The main idea is simple: natural selection favours individuals best suited to pass on their genes. However, the journey from birth to reproduction is complex as organisms experience multiple developmental stages, each influenced by genetic and environmental factors (Orr, 2009). These complexities compound even further as each stage of development might be governed by a unique underlying set of alleles and genes. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Goebl et al. (2022) examine the role of natural selection in driving ecotypic divergence across different life history stages of the prairie sunflower Helianthus petiolaris. The authors used reciprocal transplant experiments, demographic models, and genomic sequencing to explore fitness variation across developmental stages. They show how natural selection impacts population divergence across multiple life history stages and evaluate the resulting allele frequency changes. Goebl et al. link these results to the role of chromosomal inversions, thus furthering our understanding of how ecological divergence proceeds in the face of gene flow. Food is fundamental for the survival of organisms, governing growth, maintenance, and reproduction through the provision of essential macronutrients. However, access to food with optimum macronutrient composition, which will maximize the evolutionary fitness of an organism, is not always guaranteed. This leads to dietary mismatches with potential impacts on organismal performance. To understand the consequences of such dietary mismatches, we examined the effects of isocaloric diets varying in macronutrient composition on eight key organismal traits spanning across the lifespan of a large outbred Drosophila melanogaster population (n ~ 2500). Our findings reveal that carbohydrate‐reduced isocaloric diets correlates to accelerated pre‐adult development and boosts reproductive output without impacting pre‐adult viability and body size. Conversely, an elevated dietary carbohydrate content correlated to reduced lifespan in flies, evidenced by accelerated functional senescence including compromised locomotor activity and deteriorating gut integrity. Furthermore, transcriptomic analysis indicated a substantial difference in gene regulatory landscapes between flies subject to high‐carbohydrate versus high‐protein diet, with elevated protein levels indicating transcriptomes primed for reduced synthesis of fatty acids. Taken together, our study helps advance our understanding of the effect of macronutrient composition on life history traits and their interrelations, offering critical insights into potential adaptive strategies that organisms might adopt against the continual dietary imbalances prevalent in the rapidly evolving environment. In Atlantic salmon, age at maturation is a life history trait governed by a sex‐specific trade‐off between reproductive success and survival. Following environmental changes across large areas of the Northeast Atlantic, many populations currently display smaller size at age and higher age at maturation. However, whether these changes reflect rapid evolution or plasticity is unknown. Approximately 1500 historical and contemporary salmon from the river Etne in Western Norway, genotyped at 50,000 SNPs, revealed three loci associated with age at maturation. These included vgll3 and six6 which collectively explained 36%–50% of the age at maturation variation in the 1983–1984 period. These two loci also displayed sex‐specific epistasis, as the effect of six6 was only detected in males bearing two copies of the late maturation allele for vgll3. Strikingly, despite allelic frequencies at vgll3 remaining unchanged, the combined influence of these genes was nearly absent in all samples from 2013 to 2016, and genome‐wide heritability strongly declined between the two time‐points. The difference in age at maturation between males and females was upheld in the population despite the loss of effect from the candidate loci, which strongly points towards additional causative mechanisms resolving the sexual conflict. Finally, because admixture with farmed escaped salmon was excluded as the origin of the observed disconnection between gene(s) and maturation age, we conclude that the environmental changes observed in the North Atlantic during the past decades have led to bypassing of the influence of vgll3 and six6 on maturation through growth‐driven plasticity. see also the Perspective by Maren Wellenreuther [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change is associated with the increase in both the mean and variability of thermal conditions. Therefore, the use of more realistic fluctuating thermal regimes is the most appropriate laboratory method for predicting population responses to thermal heterogeneity. However, the long- and short-term implications of evolving under such conditions are not well understood. Here, we examined differences in key life-history traits among populations of seed beetles (Callosobruchus maculatus) that evolved under either constant control conditions or in an environment with fluctuating daily temperatures. Specifically, individuals from two distinct genetic backgrounds were kept for 19 generations at one of two temperatures, a constant temperature (T  = 29 °C) or a fluctuating daily cycle (T mean = 33 °C, T max = 40 °C, and T min = 26 °C), and were assayed either in their evolved environment or in the other environment. We found that beetles that evolved in fluctuating environments but were then switched to constant 29 °C conditions had far greater lifetime reproductive success compared with beetles that were kept in their evolved environments. This increase in reproductive success suggests that beetles raised in fluctuating environments may have evolved greater thermal breadth than control condition beetles. In addition, the degree of sexual dimorphism in body size and development varied as a function of genetic background, evolved thermal environment, and current temperature conditions. These results not only highlight the value of incorporating diel fluctuations into climate research but also suggest that populations that experience variability in temperature may be better able to respond to both short- and long-term changes in environmental conditions. In the light of the current biodiversity crisis that affects in particular freshwater ecosystems, it is crucial to understand the effects of functional diversity loss on phytoplankton-zooplankton interactions in freshwater food webs. Here, we simulated the loss of phytoplankton trait diversity by applying different intensities of mechanical disturbance to a natural phytoplankton community in a laboratory experiment. Different disturbance regimes clearly affected the trait distribution and functional diversity of these phytoplankton communities. In the experiment's second phase, these altered communities were provided as a food source to the zooplankton grazers Daphnia longispina and Eudiaptomus graciloides and their life-history traits and lipid compositions were investigated. Both zooplankton fitness and reproductive success were affected differently, depending on the grazers' feeding modes. Phytoplankton fatty acid composition was generally reflected in the consumers' tissue. Nevertheless, some selective PUFAs accumulation occurred and mismatches in some fatty acids suggested a possible enzymatic modification of dietary fatty acids adopted to face biochemical deficiencies of the diets. Overall, this study highlights how a loss of specific traits in resource communities could impact consumer communities, and shows how these altered community traits may affect food web dynamics. Simple Summary: The fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea (Drury) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae, Arctiidae), is a major invasive pest of China. Although it has spread from Dandong City (about 40° N) in Liaoning Province to Nanjing City (about 32° N) in Jiangsu Province and other areas, the effects of temperature changes associated with its geographical spread on its life-history traits and adult fecundity are still unknown. Thus, the current study investigated the effects of larval-rearing temperature on the developmental duration and body mass of larvae, body size, body mass, and energy reserves of pupae, as well as the body size and fecundity of adults. We found that higher larval-rearing temperatures shortened the larval developmental period and increased larval and pupal body mass as well as pupal and adult body size. Higher larval-rearing temperatures also decreased the lipid and carbohydrate content of the pupae but increased their soluble protein content and adult egg production. These results suggest that the life-history traits and fecundity of H. cunea are plastic. This information is crucial for better understanding the dispersal adaptation strategies of H. cunea and for improving the prediction of population dynamics of this species according to environmental temperatures in different years. Temperature is an important environmental factor influencing the life-history traits of ectotherms. This study investigated the effects of larval-rearing temperature (21, 23, 25, and 27 °C) on the life-history traits and adult fitness of the fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea, an economically important invasive pest of China. With the increase in temperature during the larval stage, the larval developmental duration was significantly shortened, and the body mass was significantly increased, as was that of the body mass and size of pupae. The carbohydrate and lipid content of pupae significantly decreased with increasing larval-rearing temperature, whereas the protein content significantly increased. Adult body size and egg production increased significantly with increasing larval-rearing temperature, whereas there was no significant difference in egg diameter. These results indicate that H. cunea demonstrates life-history traits plasticity. In addition, the increase in fecundity would maintain a stable population size of H. cunea under higher temperatures.
