Light can influence many psychophysiological functions beyond vision, including alertness, circadian rhythm, and sleep, namely the non-image forming (NIF) effects of light. Melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance (mel-EDI) is currently recommended as the predictor of the NIF effects of light. Although light dose is also critical for entraining and regulating circadian cycle, it is still unknown whether relatively low mel-EDI light exposure for prolonged duration in the evening would affect pre-sleep arousal and subsequent sleep. In all, 18 healthy college students (10 females, mean [standard deviation] age 21.67 [2.03] years) underwent 2 experimental nights with a 1 week interval in a simulated bedroom environment. During experimental nights, participants were either exposed to high or low mel-EDI light (73 versus 38 lx mel-EDI, 90 versus 87 photopic lx at eye level, 150 photopic lx at table level) for 3.5 h before regular bedtime, and their sleep was monitored by polysomnography. Subjective sleepiness, mood, and resting-state electroencephalography during light exposure were also investigated. Results showed no significant differences in sleep structure and sleep quality between the two light conditions, whereas 3.5 h of exposure to high versus low mel-EDI light induced marginally higher physiological arousal in terms of a lower delta but higher beta power density before sleep, as well as a lower delta power density during sleep. Moreover, participants felt happier before sleep under exposure to high versus low mel-EDI light. An accurate quantification method with a wide linearity range is paramount for the development of low-cost, portable and point-of-care sensors. This work reports a new approach to analyze the colorimetric assays on paper-based sensors using the quantification from a light transmission method. Compared to the commonly-developed color intensity measurement on scanned digital images, a portable transmission densitometer is capable of directly quantifying the optical density of colorimetric results. The detection of heavy metals in an aqueous system, including Fe(ii), Cu(ii), and Ni(ii), was carried out to demonstrate the good performance and reliability of this method. Our measurements show that the linear quantification range spans from 0.5-500 mg L -1 for the assays of Cu(ii) and Fe(ii) and from 2-500 mg L -1 for Ni(ii) based on the reading of transmitted light through the assay spot. As a comparison, the linear range is restricted to 0.5-50 mg L -1 for the same assays when analysed by the common reflection method, suggesting a significant improvement in the accuracy and sensitivity of high analyte concentrations from the light transmission method. By expanding the linearity range, this method further streamlines the sampling procedure during analysis and will greatly advance the future development of paper-based analytical sensors.

Endowing materials with chirality and exploring the responses of the material under circularly polarized light (CPL) can enable further insight into the physical and chemical properties of the semiconductors to be gained, thus expanding on optoelectronic applications. Herein a bioinspired mesoporous chiral nematic graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) for efficient hydrogen evolution with polarized light modulation based on chiral nematic cellulose nanocrystal films prepared through silica templating is described. The mesoporous nematic chiral g-C 3 N 4 exhibits an ultrahigh hydrogen evolution rate of 219.9 μmol h -1 (for 20 mg catalyst), corresponding to a high enhancement factor of 55 when compared to the bulk g-C 3 N 4 under λ>420 nm irradiation. Furthermore, the chiral g-C 3 N 4 material exhibits unique photocatalytic activity modulated by CPL within the absorption region. This CPL-assisted photocatalytic regulation strategy holds great promise for a wide range of applications including optical devices, asymmetric photocatalysis, and chiral recognition/separation., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Olfactomedin 1 (OLFM1) is a secreted glycoprotein and member of the olfactomedin protein family, which is preferentially expressed in various areas throughout the central nervous system. To learn about the functional properties of OLFM1 in the eye, we investigated its localization in the mouse and pig eye. In addition, we analyzed the ocular phenotype of Olfm1 mutant mice in which 52 amino acids were deleted in the central part (M2 region) of OLFM1. OLFM1 was detected in cornea, sclera, retina, and optic nerve of both wild-type and Olfm1 mutant littermates. By immunohistochemistry and double labeling with the lectin peanut agglutinin, OLFM1 was found in the interphotoreceptor matrix (IPM) of mouse and pig retina where it was directly localized to the inner segments of photoreceptors. Western blotting confirmed the presence of the OLFM1 isoforms pancortin 1 (BMY) and pancortin 2 (BMZ) in the IPM. The retinal phenotype of Olfm1 mutant mice did not obviously differ from that of wild-type littermates. In addition, outer nuclear layer (ONL) and total retinal thickness were not different, and the same was true for the area of the optic nerve in cross sections. Functional changes were observed though by electroretinography, which showed significantly lower a- and b-wave amplitudes in Olfm1 mutant mice when compared to age-matched wild-type mice. When light damage experiments were performed as an experimental paradigm of photoreceptor apoptosis, significantly more TUNEL-positive cells were observed in Olfm1 mutant mice 30 h after light exposure. One week after light exposure, the ONL was significantly thinner in Olfm1 mutant mice than in wild-type littermates indicating increased photoreceptor loss. No differences were observed when rhodopsin turnover or ERK1/2 signaling was investigated. We conclude that OLFM1 is a newly identified IPM molecule that serves an important role for photoreceptor homeostasis, which is significantly compromised in the eyes of Olfm1 mutant mice.

Electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) membrane was employed as a support that provided sites for AgCl crystals in situ growth. The Ag@AgCl crystals on electrospun CA composites with exposed {100} and {111} facets were fabricated at room temperature by a double diffusion technique. The crystal structure, morphology, composition, and absorption light ability of CA supported Ag@AgCl were characterized utilizing X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), attenuated total reflection-infrared intensity (ATR-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements (XPS), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectra, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the catalysts was evaluated using methyl orange (MO) as a target. The CA supported cubic Ag@AgCl catalyst exhibited much higher catalytic activity than octahedral catalyst in terms of the degradation of MO under visible light. The 10mg CA based cubes could completely degrade MO (10 mg L(-1)) in 160 min. The photocatalyst still exhibited a good catalytic ability after three times., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
