Limited magnitude asymmetric error model is well suited for flash memory. In this paper, we consider the construction of asymmetric codes correcting single error over $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{k}r}$ which is based on so called $B_{1}[{4}](2^{k}r)$ set. In fact, we reduce the construction of a maximal size $B_{1}[{4}](2^{k}r)$ set for $k\geq 3$ to the construction of a maximal size $B_{1}[{4}](2^{k-3}r)$ set. Finally, we give an explicit formula of a maximal size $B_{1}[{4}](4r)$ set and some lower bounds of a maximal size $B_{1}[{4}](2r)$ set. To equip DNA-based data storage with random-access capabilities, Yazdi et al. (2018) prepended DNA strands with specially chosen address sequences called primers and provided certain design criteria for these primers. We provide explicit constructions of error-correcting codes that are suitable as primer addresses and equip these constructions with efficient encoding algorithms. Specifically, our constructions take cyclic or linear codes as inputs and produce sets of primers with similar error-correcting capabilities. Using certain classes of BCH codes, we obtain infinite families of primer sets of length $n$ , minimum distance $d$ with $(d+1) \log _{4}\,\,n +O(1)$ redundant symbols. Our techniques involve reversible cyclic codes (1964), an encoding method of Tavares et al. (1971) and Knuth’s balancing technique (1986). Entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (abbreviate to EAQECCs) expand the usual paradigm of quantum error correction by allowing two parties to make use of pre-shared entanglement. It is well-known that we can construct an EAQECC from arbitrary classical linear code. In this paper, we construct several classes of entanglement-assisted quantum MDS (EAQMDS) codes by utilizing generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes. The main contribution of the paper is extend the code length of EAQMDS in the literature (Guo et al. 2019). We consider the decoding of linear and array codes from errors when we are only allowed to download a part of the codeword. More specifically, suppose that we have encoded $k$ data symbols using an $(n,k)$ code with code length $n$ and dimension $k$. During storage, some of the codeword coordinates might be corrupted by errors. We aim to recover the original data by reading the corrupted codeword with a limit on the transmission bandwidth, namely, we can only download an $\alpha $ proportion of the corrupted codeword. For a given $\alpha $ , our objective is to design a code and a decoding scheme such that we can recover the original data from the largest possible number of errors. A naive scheme is to read $\alpha n$ coordinates of the codeword. This method used in conjunction with MDS codes guarantees recovery from any $\lfloor (\alpha n-k)/2\rfloor $ errors. In this paper we show that we can instead download an $\alpha $ proportion from each of the codeword’s coordinates. For a well-designed MDS code, this method can guarantee recovery from $\lfloor (n-k/\alpha)/2 \rfloor $ errors, which is $1/\alpha $ times more than the naive method, and is also the maximum number of errors that an $(n,k)$ code can correct by downloading only an $\alpha $ proportion of the codeword. We present two families of such optimal constructions and decoding schemes of which one is based on Interleaved Reed-Solomon codes and the other on Folded Reed-Solomon codes. We further show that both code constructions attain asymptotically optimal list decoding radius when downloading only a part of the corrupted codeword. We also construct an ensemble of random codes that with high probability approaches the upper bound on the number of correctable errors when the decoder downloads an $\alpha $ proportion of the corrupted codeword. In this paper, we propose quantum stabilizer codes based on a new construction of self-orthogonal trace-inner product codes over the Galois field with 4 elements (GF(4)). First, from any two binary vectors, we construct a generator matrix of linear codes whose components are over GF(4). We prove that the proposed linear codes comply with the self-orthogonal, trace-inner product. Then, we propose mapping tables to construct new quantum stabilizer codes by using linear codes. Comparison results show that our proposed quantum codes have various dimensions for any code length with the capacity for better errors correction relative to the referenced quantum codes. The Z2s-additive codes are subgroups of Zn2s, and can be seen as a generalization of linear codes over Z2 and Z4. A Z2s-linear Hadamard code is a binary Hadamard code which is the Gray map image of a Z2s-additive code. It is known that either the rank or the dimension of the kernel can be used to give a complete classification for the Z4-linear Hadamard codes. However, when s > 2, the dimension of the kernel of Z2s-linear Hadamard codes of length 2t only provides a complete classification for some values of t and s. In this paper, the rank of these codes is computed for s = 3. Moreover, it is proved that this invariant, along with the dimension of the kernel, provides a complete classification, once t ≥ 3 is fixed. In this paper, we investigate an artificial-intelligence (AI) driven approach to design error correction codes (ECC). Classic error-correction code design based upon coding-theoretic principles typically strives to optimize some performance-related code property such as minimum Hamming distance, decoding threshold, or subchannel reliability ordering. In contrast, AI-driven approaches, such as reinforcement learning (RL) and genetic algorithms, rely primarily on optimization methods to learn the parameters of an optimal code within a certain code family. We employ a constructor-evaluator framework, in which the code constructor can be realized by various AI algorithms and the code evaluator provides code performance metric measurements. The code constructor keeps improving the code construction to maximize code performance that is evaluated by the code evaluator. As examples, we focus on RL and genetic algorithms to construct linear block codes and polar codes. The results show that comparable code performance can be achieved with respect to the existing codes. Let $q$ be a prime power and $m\geq 3$ be odd. Suppose that $n=\frac {q^{2m}-1}{a}$ with $a|(q^{m}+1)$ and $3\leq a \leq 2(q^{2}-q+1)$. This paper mainly determines the actual maximum designed distance of Hermitian dual-containing Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes over $\mathbb {F}_{q^{2}}$ of length $n$. Firstly, we give the maximum designed distance $\delta _{m,a}^{R}$ of narrow-sense Hermitian dual-containing BCH codes. Secondly, we show that there are also non-narrow-sense ones of designed distance up to $\delta _{m,a}^{R}$. It is worth mentioning that our maximum designed distance $\delta _{m,a}^{R}>\lceil \frac {a}{2}\rceil \delta _{m}^{A}$ , where $\delta _{m}^{A}$ is given by Aly et al. (IEEE Trans. Inf. In this paper, we first study deviations of the complete weight distribution of a linear code from that of a random code. Then, we consider a large family of subfield subcodes of algebraic-geometric codes over prime fields which include BCH codes and Goppa codes and prove that the complete weight distribution is close to that of a random code if the code length is large compared with the genus of the curve and the degree of the divisor defining the code. We present a new class of linear error-correcting codes taking numerical data into codewords with numerical symbols. These codes can correct large random numerical errors added to codewords. The goal is for numerical data to be protected directly as numbers whether in storage or transmission. The coding structures are based on discrete Fourier transform (DFT) codes, defined by parity-check matrices where rows are consecutively indexed DFT vectors. The new tensor codes use the Kronecker product of two parity-check DFT matrices of shorter length codes. We construct all necessary processing matrices. Error correction methods involve two levels of syndromes and use several stochastic Berlekamp-Massey Algorithms (sBMA) to find big syndromes, locate and evaluate large errors. Decoding is done in two stages with stage one producing corrected syndromes. Stage two determines errors within a well-defined segment for the codewords. Tensor codes have simpler and more efficient decoding operations. The characteristics of the tensor codes are compared to standard DFT codes of equal length. The processing operations are significantly less for the tensor codes but the standard DFT codes sometimes have better correcting performance. Linear block code (LBC) is an error detection and correction code that is widely used in communication systems. In this paper a special type of LBC called Hamming code was implemented and debugged using FPGA kit with integrated software environments ISE for simulation and tests the results of the hardware system. The implemented system has the ability to correct single bit error and detect two bits error. The data segments length was considered to give high reliability to the system and make an aggregation between the speed of processing and the hardware ability to be implemented. An adaptive length of input data has been consider, up to 248 bits of information can be handled using Spartan 3E500 with 43% as a maximum slices utilization. Input/output data buses in FPGA have been customized to meet the requirements where 34% of input/output resources have been used as maximum ratio. An error-correction method is proposed for computer arithmetic logic units, in which memory duplication is executed and an algebraic linear code with minimal information redundancy is used for control. Rules for the use of coded information have been formulated for error detection during execution of arithmetic and logical operations. A procedure is proposed for the formulation of the duplication channel of arithmetic logic units due to the use of equipment intended for coding of information and the functional redundancy of the arithmetic logic units of the processor. Mechanisms are revealed that make it possible to use the functional arithmetic logic units of the processor and the monitoring equipment for the execution of primary and duplicating functions. Hardware costs are calculated for the formation of the duplication channel, and a comparative estimation is conducted of the gain in probability of failure-free operation of the fail-safe computer when using the proposed method of error correction in comparison with the majority reservation method. It is shown that the developed method of error correction, by comparison with the majority method, makes it possible to improve the probability of failure-free operation of the computer, reduce by a third the overall hardware costs, and reduce by a factor of 2.5 the expenditures for creation of the arithmetic logic unit of the processor. Grassmannian codes are known to be useful in error correction for random network coding. Recently, they were used to prove that vector network codes outperform scalar linear network codes, on multicast networks, with respect to the alphabet size. The multicast networks which were used for this purpose are generalized combination networks. In both the scalar and the vector network coding solutions, the subspace distance is used as the distance measure for the codes which solve the network coding problem in the generalized combination networks. In this paper, we show that the subspace distance can be replaced with two other possible distance measures which generalize the subspace distance. These two distance measures are shown to be equivalent under an orthogonal transformation. It is proved that the Grassmannian codes with the new distance measures generalize the Grassmannian codes with the subspace distance and the subspace designs with the strength of the design. Furthermore, optimal Grassmannian codes with the new distance measures have minimal requirements for the network coding solutions of some generalized combination networks. The coding problems related to these two distance measures, especially with respect to network coding, are discussed. Hamming code is a linear error-correcting code widely used in memory and telecommunication. For the first time, here we put forth an approach to analyzing Hamming codes in hardware using networks consisting of memristors. Such networks are capable of detecting and correcting potential bit errors in Hamming codes in a high-speed and energy-efficient way, where the parity-check matrix is stored in the memristor crossbar array and the syndrome vector is represented by the states of the output unipolar memristors whose resistance flipping naturally implements vector-matrix multiplication with modulo 2. Our experimental results demonstrate that the output syndrome vector is able to correctly represent the position of the bit error whenever it exists, and subsequent correction can thus be applied by flipping the bit identified. In recent years, self-dual MDS codes have attracted a lot of attention due to theoretical interest and practical importance. Similar to self-dual MDS codes, self-dual near MDS (NMDS for short) codes have nice structures as well. From both theoretical and practical points of view, it is natural to study self-dual NMDS codes. Although there has been lots of work on NMDS codes in literature, little is known for self-dual NMDS codes. It seems more challenging to construct self-dual NMDS codes than self-dual MDS codes. The only work on construction of self-dual NMDS codes shows existence of $q$ -ary self-dual NMDS codes of length $q-1$ for odd prime power $q$ or length up to 16 for some small primes $q$ with $q\le 197$. In this paper, we make use of properties of elliptic curves to construct self-dual NMDS codes. It turns out that, as long as $2|q$ and $n$ is even with $4\le n\le q+\lfloor 2\sqrt {q}\rfloor -2$ , one can construct a self-dual NMDS code of length $n$ over $ {\mathbb {F}}_{q}$. In this paper, we present linear systematic error-correcting codes Lk and L+k which are the results of our research on the sub-exceeding functions. Given an integer k such that k ≥ 3, these two codes are re-spectively [2k, k] and [3k, k] linear codes. The minimum distance of L3 is 3 and for k ≥ 4 the minimum distance of Lk is 4. The code L+k, the minimum distances are respectively 5 and 6 for k = 4 and k ≥ 5. By calculating the complexity of the algorithms, our codes have fast and efficient decoding. In this paper, we study bounds on the number of check digits of linear codes that can detect multiple sub-blocks each affected by e or less random errors and can locate such corrupted multiple sub-blocks. Further, we obtain an upper bound on the number of check digits of linear codes which can correct such errors occurring in multiple subblocks. We also give examples of such codes. This work proposes a new code which can be considered as the modification of linear block code with code rate 1/2 and less than 1/2. The theme of the work is derived from the controllability of discrete time system and accordingly the generator matrix is chosen. A procedure is proposed in this paper which can transform the lower dimensional space to higher dimensional space. A Code is subspace of a space, so, with the help of addition of an equivalent identity matrix, between I (Identity matrix) and P (Parity Check) matrix of the established generator matrix, the lower dimensional space is transformed to higher dimensional space. Multiple numbers of errors could be corrected with the help of this designed code. It is also shown that decoding of this code can be established using the methods like syndrome detection and nearest neighbor decoding. The proposed code satisfies all the bounds. A long-standing conjecture of Golomb and Welch, raised in 1970, states that there is no perfect r error correcting Lee code of length n for n\geq 3 and r>1 under the l_{p} metric, where 1\leq p<\infty . We show some nonexistence results of linear perfect lp codes for p=1 and 2\leq p<\infty , r=2^{1/p},3^{1/p} . Content-addressable memories (CAMs) are a type of memory that receives an input search key and compares it to every entry of a table of stored keys. If there is a match, they return the corresponding address where the value was found. Alternatively, they can include a related Random Access Memory (RAM) that is accessed with the matching address, returning the corresponding data values. To protect a CAM with associated RAM against errors, parity or error-correction codes (ECCs) are typically used. They usually protect the CAM and the RAM information separately incurring in additional storage needs. This paper proposes a scheme to protect some configurations of CAM with its associated RAM from errors with a single ECC code. This ECC code can be used to provide advanced error correction to the combination of the key and data values stored in the CAM and the RAM, but it can also be applied in a modular way to provide simpler protection to the key or to the values individually. We give an infinite family of maximum rank distance (MRD) codes, which covers properly the largest known linear MRD code family. Our family contains infinite families of non-linear MRD codes, which are the first non-linear examples for most of the parameters. One central theme in quantum error-correction is to construct quantum codes that have a relatively large minimum distance. In this paper, we first present a construction of classical linear codes based on certain classes of polynomials. Through these classical linear codes, we are able to obtain some new quantum codes. Locally repairable codes (LRCs) are a class of codes designed for the local correction of erasures. They have received considerable attention in recent years due to their applications in distributed storage. Most existing results on LRCs do not explicitly take into consideration the field size $q$ , i.e., the size of the code alphabet. In particular, for the binary case, only a few results are known. In this paper, we present an upper bound on the minimum distance $d$ of linear LRCs with availability, based on the work of Cadambe and Mazumdar. The bound takes into account the code length $n$ , dimension $k$ , locality $r$ , availability $t$ , and field size $q$ . Then, we study the binary linear LRCs in three aspects. First, we focus on analyzing the locality of some classical codes, i.e., cyclic codes and Reed–Muller codes, and their modified versions, which are obtained by applying the operations of extend, shorten, expurgate, augment, and lengthen. Next, we construct LRCs using phantom parity-check symbols and multi-level tensor product structure, respectively. Compared with other previous constructions of binary LRCs with fixed locality or minimum distance, our construction is much more flexible in terms of code parameters, and gives various families of high-rate LRCs, some of which are shown to be optimal with respect to their minimum distance. Finally, the availability of LRCs is studied. We investigate the locality and availability properties of several classes of one-step majority-logic decodable codes, including cyclic simplex codes, cyclic difference-set codes, and 4-cycle free regular low-density parity-check codes. Two families of new asymmetric quantum codes are constructed in this paper. The first family is the asymmetric quantum codes with length $$n=q^{m}-1$$ over $$F_{q}$$ , where $$q\ge 5$$ is a prime power. The second one is the asymmetric quantum codes with length $$n=3^{m}-1$$ . These asymmetric quantum codes are derived from the CSS construction and pairs of nested BCH codes. Moreover, let the defining set $$T_{1}=T_{2}^{-q}$$ , then the real Z-distance of our asymmetric quantum codes are much larger than $$\delta _\mathrm{max}+1$$ , where $$\delta _\mathrm{max}$$ is the maximal designed distance of dual-containing narrow-sense BCH code, and the parameters presented here have better than the ones available in the literature. Most bounds on the size of codes hold for any code, whether linear or not. Notably, the Griesmer bound holds only in the linear case and so optimal linear codes are not necessarily optimal codes. In this paper, we identify code parameters $(q,d,k)$ , namely, field size, minimum distance, and combinatorial dimension, for which the Griesmer bound also holds in the (systematic) nonlinear case. Moreover, we show that the Griesmer bound does not necessarily hold for a systematic code by explicit construction of a family of optimal systematic binary codes. A construction of two-quasi-perfect Lee codes is given over the space \mathbb Zp^{n} for p prime, p\equiv \pm 5\pmod {12} , and n=2[{p}/{4}]$ . It is known that there are infinitely many such primes. Golomb and Welch conjectured that perfect codes for the Lee metric do not exist for dimension $n\geq 3$ and radius $r\geq 2$ . This conjecture was proved to be true for large radii as well as for low dimensions. The codes found are very close to be perfect, which exhibits the hardness of the conjecture. In this paper we introduce symplectic Grassmann codes, in analogy to ordinary Grassmann codes and orthogonal Grassmann codes, as projective codes defined by symplectic Grassmannians. Lagrangian–Grassmannian codes are a special class of symplectic Grassmann codes. We show that errors in data transmitted through linear codes can be thought of as codewords of minimum weight of new linear codes. To determine errors we can then use methods specific to finding such special codewords. One of these methods consists of finding the primary decomposition of the saturation of a certain homogeneous ideal. When good words (i.e. vectors with a unique nearest neighbor) are error-corrected, the saturated ideal is just the prime ideal of a point (so the primary decomposition is superfluously determined); we show that this ideal can be computed by coloning the original homogeneous ideal with a power of a certain variable. This brief lays out cyclic redundancy check-based encoding scheme and presents an efficient implementation of the encoding algorithm in field programmable gate array (FPGA) prototype for both the binary Golay code ( G\mathrm {\mathbf {23}} ) and extended binary Golay code ( G\mathrm {\mathbf {24}} ). High speed with low-latency architecture has been designed and implemented in Virtex-4 FPGA for Golay encoder without incorporating linear feedback shift register. This brief also presents an optimized and low-complexity decoding architecture for extended binary Golay code (24, 12, 8) based on an incomplete maximum likelihood decoding scheme. The proposed architecture for decoder occupies less area and has lower latency than some of the recent work published in this area. The encoder module runs at 238.575 MHz, while the proposed architecture for decoder has an operating clock frequency of 195.028 MHz. Application Layer Forward Error Correction (AL-FEC) is becoming a popular addition to protocols for real-time video delivery over IP-based wireless networks. In particular, rateless codes are identified as suitable solution for AL-FEC due to their flexibility and capacity-approaching performance. Since each part of video data is not equally important for video reconstruction, it is beneficial to group it based on its importance, and then provide different degree of protection using Unequal Error Protection (UEP). Data partitioning (DP) is one such low-cost feature in H.264/AVC enabling partitioning of video data based on its importance. We propose schemes for the DP H.264/AVC video transmission using Raptor and Random Linear Codes (RLC) and investigate their performance as AL-FEC solutions in Digital Video Broadcasting. We provide comparisons between optimized Non-Overlapping Window RLC and Expanding Window (EW) RLC, which are two effective UEP RLC strategies. We present new constructions of codes for asymmetric channels for both binary and nonbinary alphabets, based on methods of generalized code concatenation. For the binary asymmetric channel, our methods construct nonlinear single-error-correcting codes from ternary outer codes. We show that some of the Varshamov–Tenengol’ts–Constantin–Rao codes, a class of binary nonlinear codes for this channel, have a nice structure when viewed as ternary codes. In many cases, our ternary construction yields even better codes. For the nonbinary asymmetric channel, our methods construct linear codes for many lengths and distances which are superior to the linear codes of the same length capable of correcting the same number of symmetric errors. Quantum maximum-distance-separable (MDS) codes form an important class of quantum codes. To get q -ary quantum MDS codes, one of the effective ways is to find linear MDS codes C over \mathbb Fq^{2} satisfying C^{\perp H}\subseteq C , where C^\perp H denotes the Hermitian dual code of C . For a linear code C of length n over , we say that C is a dual-containing code if C^\perp H\subseteq C and C\neq \mathbb {F}q^{2}^{n} . Several classes of new quantum MDS codes with relatively large minimum distance have been produced through dual-containing constacyclic MDS codes. These works motivate us to make a careful study on the existence conditions for dual-containing constacyclic codes. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of dual-containing constacyclic codes. Four classes of dual-containing constacyclic MDS codes are constructed and their parameters are computed. Consequently, the quantum MDS codes are derived from these parameters. Quantum synchronizable error-correcting codes are special quantum error-correcting codes that are designed to correct both the effect of quantum noise on qubits and misalignment in block synchronization. It is known that, in principle, such a code can be constructed through a combination of a classical linear code and its subcode if the two are both cyclic and dual-containing. However, finding such classical codes that lead to promising quantum synchronizable error-correcting codes is not a trivial task. In fact, although there are two families of classical codes that are proved to produce quantum synchronizable codes with good minimum distances and highest possible tolerance against misalignment, their code lengths have been restricted to primes and Mersenne numbers. In this paper, examining the incidence vectors of projective spaces over the finite fields of characteristic 2, we give quantum synchronizable codes from cyclic codes whose lengths are not primes or Mersenne numbers. These projective geometric codes achieve good performance in quantum error correction and possess the best possible ability to recover synchronization, thereby enriching the variety of good quantum synchronizable codes. We also extend the current knowledge of cyclic codes in classical coding theory by explicitly giving generator polynomials of the finite geometric codes and completely characterizing the minimum weight nonzero codewords. In addition to the codes based on projective spaces, we carry out a similar analysis on the well-known cyclic codes from Euclidean spaces that are known to be majority logic decodable and determine their exact minimum distances. We study certain combinatorial aspects of list-decoding, motivated by the exponential gap between the known upper bound (of \(O(1/\gamma )\) ) and lower bound (of \(\Omega _{p} (\log (1/\gamma ))\) ) for the list size needed to list decode up to error fraction \(p\) with rate \(\gamma \) away from capacity, i.e., \(1- h(p)-\gamma \) [here \(p\in (0, {1}/{2})\) and \(\gamma > 0\) ]. Our main result is that we prove that in any binary code \(C \subseteq \{ 0, 1 \} ^{n}\) of rate \(1- h(p) - \gamma \) , there must exist a set \( \mathcal {L}\subset C\) of \(\Omega _{p} (1/\sqrt {\gamma })\) codewords such that the average distance of the points in \( \mathcal {L}\) from their centroid is at most \(pn\) . In other words, there must exist \(\Omega _{p}(1/\sqrt {\gamma })\) codewords with low average radius. The standard notion of list decoding corresponds to working with the maximum distance of a collection of codewords from a center instead of average distance. The average radius form is in itself quite natural; for instance, the classical Johnson bound in fact implies average-radius list-decodability. The remaining results concern the standard notion of list-decoding, and help clarify the current state of affairs regarding combinatorial bounds for list-decoding as follows. First, we give a short simple proof, over all fixed alphabets, of the above-mentioned \(\Omega _{p}(\log (1/\gamma ))\) lower bound. Earlier, this bound followed from a complicated, more general result of Blinovsky. Second, we show that one cannot improve the \(\Omega _{p}(\log (1/\gamma ))\) lower bound via techniques based on identifying the zero-rate regime for list-decoding of constant-weight codes [this is a typical approach for negative results in coding theory, including the \(\Omega _{p} (\log (1/\gamma ))\) list-size lower bound]. On a positive note, our \(\Omega _{p}(1/\sqrt {\gamma })\) lower bound for average-radius list-decoding circumvents this barrier. Third, we exhibit a reverse connection between the existence of constant-weight and general codes for list-decoding, showing that the best possible list-size, as a function of the gap \(\gamma \) of the rate to the capacity limit, is the same up to constant factors for both constant-weight codes (with weight bounded away from \(p\) ) and general codes. Fourth, we give simple second moment-based proofs that w.h.p. a list-size of \(\Omega _{p} (1/\gamma )\) is needed for list-decoding random codes from errors as well as erasures. We introduce complementary information set codes of higher order. A binary linear code of length \(tk\) and dimension \(k\) is called a complementary information set code of order \(t\) ( \(t\) -CIS code for short) if it has \(t\) pairwise disjoint information sets. The duals of such codes permit to reduce the cost of masking cryptographic algorithms against side-channel attacks. As in the case of codes for error correction, given the length and the dimension of a \(t\) -CIS code, we look for the highest possible minimum distance. In this paper, this new class of codes is investigated. The existence of good long CIS codes of order 3 is derived by a counting argument. General constructions based on cyclic and quasi-cyclic codes and on the building up construction are given. A formula similar to a mass formula is given. A classification of 3-CIS codes of length \(\le 12\) is given. Nonlinear codes better than linear codes are derived by taking binary images of \( {\mathbb Z}_{4}\) -codes. A general algorithm based on Edmonds’ basis packing algorithm from matroid theory is developed with the following property: given a binary linear code of rate \(1/t\) , it either provides \(t\) disjoint information sets or proves that the code is not \(t\) -CIS. Using this algorithm, all optimal or best known \([tk, k]\) codes, where \(t=3, 4, {\dots }, 256\) and \(1 \le k \le \lfloor 256/t \rfloor \) are shown to be \(t\) -CIS for all such \(k\) and \(t\) , except for \(t=3\) with \(k=44\) and \(t=4\) with \(k=37\) . We present a generalized construction of extended length Goppa codes. Using this construction, we obtain 71 new codes in finite field \(\mathbb {F}_{q}\) for \(q=4,7,8,9\) with better minimum distance than the previously known codes with the same length and dimension. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Relative dimension/length profile (RDLP), inverse relative dimension/length profile (IRDLP) and relative length/dimension profile (RLDP) are equivalent sequences of a linear code and a subcode. The concepts were applied to protect messages from an adversary in the wiretap channel of type II with illegitimate parties. The equivocation to the adversary is described by IRDLP and upper-bounded by the generalized Singleton bound on IRDLP. Recently, RLDP was also extended in wiretap network II for secrecy control of network coding. In this paper, we introduce new relations and bounds about the sequences. They not only reveal new connections among known results but also find applications in trellis complexities of linear codes. The state complexity profile of a linear code and that of a subcode can be bounded from each other, which is particularly useful when a tradeoff among coding rate, error-correcting capability and decoding complexity is considered. Furthermore, a unified framework is proposed to derive bounds on RDLP and IRDLP from an upper bound on RLDP. We introduce three new upper bounds on RLDP and use some of them to tighten the generalized Singleton bounds by applying the framework. Motivated by distributed storage applications, we investigate the degree to which capacity achieving codes can be efficiently updated when a single information symbol changes, and the degree to which such codes can be efficiently repaired when a single encoded symbol is lost. Specifically, we first develop conditions under which optimum error-correction and update-efficiency are possible. We establish that the number of encoded bits that should change in response to a change in a single information bit must scale logarithmically in the block-length of the code, if we are to achieve any nontrivial rate with vanishing probability of error over the binary erasure or binary symmetric channels. Moreover, we show that there exist capacity-achieving codes with this scaling. With respect to local repairability, we develop tight upper and lower bounds on the number of remaining encoded bits that are needed to recover a single lost encoded bit. In particular, we show that when the rate of an optimal code is ε below capacity, the maximum number of codeword symbols required to recover one lost symbol must scale as log1/ε. A curve attaining the Hasse–Weil bound is called a maximal curve. Usually, classical error-correcting codes obtained from a maximal curve have good parameters. However, the quantum stabilizer codes obtained from such classical error-correcting codes via Euclidean or Hermitian self-orthogonality do not always possess good parameters. In this paper, the Hermitian self-orthogonality of algebraic geometry codes obtained from two maximal curves is investigated. We consider the design and evaluation of short barcodes, with a length between six and eight nucleotides, used for parallel sequencing on platforms where substitution errors dominate. Such codes should have not only good error correction properties but also the code words should fulfil certain biological constraints (experimental parameters). We compare published barcodes with codes obtained by two new constructions methods, one based on the currently best known linear codes and a simple randomized construction method. The evaluation done is with respect to the error correction capabilities, barcode size and their experimental parameters and fundamental bounds on the code size and their distance properties. We provide a list of codes for lengths between six and eight nucleotides, where for length eight, two substitution errors can be corrected. In fact, no code with larger minimum distance can exist. In this paper, we obtain bounds for error correcting codes of some particular homogeneous weights over the ring of integers modulo $${2^l( {l\ge 3})}$$. Recent work by Divsalar has shown that properly designed protograph-based low-density parity-check codes typically have minimum (Hamming) distance linearly increasing with block length. This fact rests on ensemble arguments over all possible expansions of the base protograph. However, when implementation complexity is considered, the expansions are frequently selected from a smaller class of structured expansions. For example, protograph expansion by cyclically shifting connections generates a quasi-cyclic (QC) code. Other recent work by Smarandache and Vontobel has provided upper bounds on the minimum distance of QC codes. In this paper, we generalize these bounds to punctured QC codes and then show how to tighten these for certain classes of codes. We then evaluate these upper bounds for the family of protograph codes known as AR4JA codes that have been recommended for use in deep space communications in a standard established by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems. It is an important issue to search for self-orthogonal codes for construction of quantum codes by CSS construction (Calderbank-Sho-Steane codes); in quantum error correction, CSS codes are a special type of stabilizer codes constructed from classical codes with some special properties, and the CSS construction of quantum codes is a well-known construction. First, we employ hierarchical posets with two levels for construction of binary linear codes. Second, we find some necessary and sufficient conditions for these linear codes constructed using posets to be self-orthogonal, and we use these self-orthogonal codes for obtaining binary quantum codes. Finally, we obtain four infinite families of binary quantum codes for which the minimum distances are three or four by CSS construction, which include binary quantum Hamming codes with length n ≥ 7 . We also find some (almost) "optimal" quantum codes according to the current database of Grassl. Furthermore, we explicitly determine the weight distributions of these linear codes constructed using posets, and we present two infinite families of some optimal binary linear codes with respect to the Griesmer bound and a class of binary Hamming codes.
