EIGHTEENTH century , *LITERARY criticism - Abstract
This article rescues from oblivion the fragments and news that have been preserved from the lost dramatic works of Juan Pablo Forner: Scene I of Act III of the tragedy Las Vestales, and the data on the composition and plot of La Cautiva Española. Included, in a critical edition with textual notes, are the two texts that the native of Merida himself managed to preserve from these two of his creations, the fragment of Las Vestales included in the «Ilustraciones» to the second of his Discursos filosóficos sobre el hombre, and his Carta de don Juan Pablo Forner [...] a Don Ignacio López de Ayala [...] sobre haberle desaprobado su drama intitulado La Cautiva española. With this work we wanted to contribute to improve the knowledge we have today of the written production bequeathed by Forner to posterity, and to disseminate it among today's interested readers. COLOMBIAN literature , *AESTHETICS & politics , *SOCIAL criticism , *MYTHOLOGY & culture ,HISTORY & criticism - Abstract
This conference is centered on the critical method developed by Carlos Rincón throughout his academic endeavors. At the beginning of his work, metaphor was a trope that generated change in poetics and culture. Later on, constellations of ideas took metaphors to a new and more complex level of connections. They show the way he acknowledges change and the need to renew theory from the perspective of a history of the present in its concrete forms that were also the concrete forms of his own life and displacements. SPANISH literature , *POETRY (Literary form) , *LITERARY criticism , *RELIGIOUS communities , *WOMEN poets , *MYSTICISM - Abstract
The present paper attempts to call attention to the notorious influence that the work of the Spanish nun sor María de Jesús de Ágreda (1602-1665) exerted over the work of sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695), particularly over the Primero Sueño. Through the work of sor María, especially in her book Mística Ciudad de Dios, a bond can be stablished between the master piece of the Mexican nun and one of her minor and less known texts: Ejerciciosde la Encarnación. In the texts above, there is an element in common: The soul of a woman is favored with a vision of totality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Having the works of Lukács (1965), Watt (2010) and Bakhtin (2010) as main readings to study the novels that possibly present problems in their elaboration, be they in terms of content or form, the novel Chove nos campos de Cachoeira (first published in 1941), by Dalcídio Jurandir (1909 - 1979), is the object of this article. Jurandir's novel was at considered a great creation and at times as having no literary qualities whatsoever. More than verifying the qualities and defects of this regionalist novel, which is in its 8th. edition, published in 2019, the objective here is to carry out a broad reading of the elements of the narrative to find out to what extent this writer from Pará contributes to the formation of brazilian literature, especially of amazonian literature, and how much he inserted himself into the problems of his time, both in relation to literary choices and the use of local elements. LITERARY criticism - Abstract
This article rescues from oblivion one of the few plays composed by Juan Pablo Forner in the Spanish Eighteenth Century that we have preserved, but of which there was no news at the present time. It is a comedy, Los aduladores, which was premiered posthumously in Madrid, at the Teatro de la Cruz, in 1797. Various aspects are studied about it: its preservation in libraries, the transmission of its text, its authorship, its sources of composition, the circumstances of its Madrid premiere, the company that took care of its performance, its success among the audience, its echo in the press of the time. It reproduces the only article that was dedicated to him, on the occasion of its premiere, in the newspapers of the time published in Madrid, an article that appeared in print in Memorial Literario, which commented very favourably on his staging, and summarised his argument. ROMANTICISM , *ARGENTINE literature , *LITERARY criticism , *MODERNISM (Literature) - Abstract
This essay systematizes Beatriz Sarlo's nineteenth-century Argentinean literature approaches, which are part of a broader critical project focused on the twentieth century, particularly on the first decades, that she has extended at least to the present century. The central hypothesis is that Sarlo's insistence on examining the founding moment of Argentinean literature and the work and figure of writers such as Sarmiento and Echeverría is due to her intention to find a first modernizing moment before the cultural modernity she observes in her classic work Una modernidad periférica. Buenos Aires 1920 y 1930 (1988). Furthermore, the essay aims to explore Sarlo's initial study about Juan María Gutiérrez in relation to a literary history narrated from a modern perspective but also concerning her position as a critic. This study is an analysis of the development of literary criticism in Costa Rica, from its origin to the present time. To define the distinct periods, both extraliterary and intraliterary aspects were taken into account. These communicating vessels, in turn, lead to the formulation of four stages, due to sociocultural and literary factors: a founding stage, an exploratory stage, one related to academe, and a contemporary stage, each of which is associated with an ideology (how the nation is conceived) and an esthetic proposal (how literature is conceived).

Aguiar e Silva's Teoria da Literatura has been a reference for many generations of literary scholars. Departing from old scholarly models, this work seems however torn between its properly theoretical interests, which are potentially universal and explanation-based, and the imperative to understand its object in a strict adherence to its historical character. The work strived to reconcile incompatible disciplinary premises, affording to do so in an institutional framework that recently underwent deep transformations. These concerned both the cognitive purposes and the means through which Literature is studied. Nevertheless, understanding how the theoretical matrix of this investigation was brought about is important if we intend to grasp the possibilities that it might still offer for Literary Studies. This article addresses the concept of "literature" employed in this model of History, theorized in Aguiar e Silva's textbook. We also discuss the search of alternatives to the current periodological catalog, especially concerning the author's doctoral thesis on Mannerism and Baroque. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Based on a precise historical context (the early 1930s), this article aims to investigatethe repercussions of Walter Benjamin’s statement that “The critic is the strategist in the literary battle” (“One-way Street”). Taking as references, on the one hand, the rise of National Socialism in Germany, and, on the other hand, Benjamin’s relations with four other authors (Brecht, Kommerell, Adorno and Scholem), I try to think the possibility for literary criticism to operate simultaneously as a subjective record (discursive dissemination of a subject’s characteristics) and as a political register (claiming a position regarding historical facts that are contemporary with the subject in question). It is an investigation on literary criticism of that period as practiced by Walter Benjamin, as a “dialectical treatment of the authoritarian commentary form” (Erdmut Wizisla). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By focusing on the interrelated topics of literary history, book censorship, and book history, the article examines the relative neglect ofLazarillo de Tormes castigado(1573) in literary studies. It argues that the expurgatedLazarillois an important ‘missing’ part of the history ofLazarillo de Tormes(1554), and sets out to unearth the silences, gaps, and omissions that prevail around the censored text in the study and history of this canonical work. Acknowledging and understanding the relative ‘silencing’ ofLazarillo castigado(1573) inLazarillostudies redresses a significant lacuna in the editorial, reception, and cultural history of the work. It also offers and establishes for readers a fruitful reciprocity for reinterpreting the 1554Lazarilloand for reading theLazarillo castigado. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The scientific dream of our time is to achieve a unified theory of all fundamental interactions, something like the logic of being-entity. This project is called Ontology. And it has found the resistance of empiricism, both in the field of the disciplines of nature as in the human disciplines. Thinking about the human condition involves working in two complementary directions: an evolutionary direction, the trajectory of the animal kingdom to the kingdom of the spirit of enlightenment and an organic direction, the relationship between humanity and nature. The first orientation corresponds to a philosophy of history. The second requires the overcoming of the modern dualisms: idealism-materialism, nature-society and its reply is the theory of the imagination. Literary history has the resources to overcome empiricism and join the ontological project. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to examine the process of novel's autonomy institutionalization in Colombia, during the first half of the 20th century. This research draws upon mostly primary sources including texts of Colombian literature history and criticism as well as the monographic studies about the Colombian novel published between 1925 and 1975. The period from 1943 to 1975, specifically, accounts for the way in which the main agents of the Colombian literary field approached differently the characteristics and the role of the novel in the Colombian society of the time. From the paradoxes of the affirmation of the ideal of aesthetic autonomy in Latin America, the essay attempts to reformulate that concept as a historiographic instrument, making it capable of observing its contextual implications without normatively linking itself to selected works and authors. In order to overcome the friction between autonomy's ideality (as an ontology of literature) and the empirical (institutional) analysis of peripheral literary systems (like Latin America's), we dialogue with J. Ramos, P. Casanova e H. Vaihinger. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies how 18th- and 19th-century historians (Quintana, Durán) became interested in the romancero, and considers to what degree that interest can be tied to romantic ideology. Specifically, this paper focuses on the reception of the romancero nuevo of Góngora at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th Centuries, which critics like Quintana were able to reassess and reintroduce into the literary canon.

This paper presents a review of the main contributions that Francisco Giner de los Ríos made in the field of literary criticism, history and aesthetics, which he mainly carried out in the Revista Meridional of Granada between 1862 and 1863, and later in some newspapers from Madrid. All these works and some he wrote afterwards were compiled in Estudios literarios (1866), his first published book, which had an extended edition in 1876, Estudios de literatura y artes. After 1876, Giner de los Ríos left the field of literary studies, but he came back soon, when he published «Cartas literarias» at El Pueblo Español. These new writings appeared at the end of 1878 and beginning of 1879, and they were Giner’s last contribution to the literary criticism. Among the authors he wrote about, we can emphasize Ventura Ruiz Aguilera (Giner wrote four articles about him) and Benito Pérez Galdós.

Laera, A. (2010).

Abstract. The discussion about Afro-Colombian Literature involves thinking about it from its own essence, from what it really is. It means to tackle its origins and mainspring, as well. Unfortunately the concept has been defined with shyness and frugality as a result; without deepening what this literary expression represents as a separated chapter in The Colombian literature. This gap has been, somehow, what has nourished the poor visibility of Afro-Colombian writers in the letters of the country, which has deprived our literature from the enrichment of all the intellectual contribution of African descendants. Thereafter, our interest to develop this work came up, not only with the purpose of pointing out a precise definition of what can be understood as Afro-Colombian literature, but also to establish its own characteristics, as well as the elements which make it different from other literary expressions that have emerged in the country. To achieve this goal, the concept is approached from its genesis, which is rooted in the poetry of the two Afro-Colombian writers recognized as its initiators: Candelario Obeso and Jorge Artel. Thus, approaching the poetry of these authors, we discovered the elements which gave a characterization to this literary expression and subsequently, to determine the way these ones have been manifested in other authors, to validate its authenticity and independence from other literary expressions. However, to come up to a characterization of Afro-Colombian literature from its origins, not considering the historical course of this literary expression, could hinder our understanding about the necessity of creating this separated splitting for Afro-Colombian literature within the orbit of our national literature. Thus, this work also gives an overview of the treatment assumed by history and literary criticism to this kind of literature. The purpose of this work is therefore, to propose a new vision of Afro-Colombian literature and specify how necessary is to open the literary canon to this literature and its authors. Maestría
