Abstract

The article describes the design of the journal cover, a drawing of five flowers representing ancient literary awards: violet, wild rose, lilly, marigold, and the amaranth. The article describes the history of the European literary society L'Académie des Jeux Floraux (The Academy of Floral Games) and also examines the society's ancestor, the Compagnie du Gai Sçavoir. The article notes that the academy has published an annual volume of poetry submitted for the awards since 1696, and the rendering on the "Library Quarterly" journal cover comes from a mid-nineteenth-century volume published by the academy.
