A new alternative to the Big Bang theory, regarding the origin and evolution of the Universe, is receiving considerable attention. Called 'ekpyrotic cosmology,' it describes a collision of higher-dimensional 'branes' rather than a big bang.

Five predictions for the next century are given: that it is possible to travel faster than light; the Big Bang theory will be put to rest; gravity will be controllable; free energy; and acceptance that time travel is impossible.
