The ancient Greek scholar Dionysius Longinus was the first to write extensively about the sublime as a specific category of emotional experience, which for him was usually provoked by short passages of great authors. The use of this term declined almost two centuries ago, although longing for the sublime remains.

Raphael's painting, 'The School of Athens,' pictorially represents the intellectual activity of philosophy by depicting philosophers engaged in their pursuit of knowledge. Although the allegorical figure of Dame Philosophy is present in the painting, Raphael broke the allegorical tradition by dividing the painting into two distinct fields consisting of personifications of the several arts and a large number of their exponents. Just before dying, Socrates asked that a cock be sacrificed in thankfulness to the god Asclepius as was the custom when someone recovered from sickness. The exact meaning of Socrates' statement has long been disputed, but the grammatical construction that Socrates used and a reference to Plato's illness early in the dialogue make it likely that Socrates was alluding to Plato. For Plato, Socrates' words probably signified that he had been entrusted with Socrates' legacy.
