Gardening experiments are timely in the context of what many now call the Anthropocene, an era that highlights questions of how humans collectively relate to the larger Earth systems in which we are embedded. In “Ecocriticism on the Edge: The Anthropocene as a Threshold Concept”, Timothy Clark reflects on the “unreadability” of the Anthropocene. He invites ecocritics to address this challenge by practicing “scale framing,” reading texts in variable and increasingly broad scales, and engaging the contradictions that emerge. We applied a scale framing approach to a story of relationships with “Silphium integrifolium” in an experimental gardening project. Silphium is a native North American perennial prairie plant being domesticated as a future oilseed crop. We are researchers and participants in a civic science project, in which individual garden sites are designed to collect data on and conserve silphium ecotypes while being linked into a wider network. In particular, we analyzed a civic science video story created by Ellie Irons called “Un-Lawning with Silphium.” Through our ecocritical analysis, we generated a framework to visualize nested and cross-scalar relationships in gardening projects. This framework could help inform the design and assessment of experimental gardening projects that feature the arts and humanities (e.g., digital narratives, ecocriticism, and pedagogy) and connect them with the natural and social sciences (e.g., plant breeding, botany, geography, and ecology) through transdisciplinary and participatory research methodologies for public engagement (e.g., civic science). We found that civic science gardening with silphium, and other gardening experiments in the Anthropocene, can guide public sensory engagements with scale, help spark recognition and investigation of contradictory scale effects, and motivate us to imagine and build relationships of caring responsibility., Los experimentos de jardinería son oportunos en la época que muchos denominan el Antropoceno. In a time of mass extinction and climate change, every plant in a design urban garden matters. For me, as a garden designer, that means using native plant in sync with local wildlife. The hope is that using plants wildlife recognize will, in some cases, help both fauna and flora adapt to changes. My designs are meant to bridge the wild prairie, most now gone, and the traditional aesthetic concerns of urban dwellers. As wildness is brought back into our lives through all five senses, we gain appreciation for other species and, in turn, may begin to advocate for them and their wellbeing -- as our wellbeing is tied to plants, birds, insects, spiders, and more.

This essay explores the weaving together of vegetal and elemental narratives through the poetry of Andrea Zanzotto and Daria Menicanti and shows how their experience of the landscape is punctuated by cross-species encounters, a radical openness to the world, the belief in the common roots of all life, and the embrace of vulnerability in interactions with others. Starting from the premise that these poets comprehend that an emphasis on verbality reflects the anthropic desire to translate life into a one-species code and constitutes an impediment to universal and meaningful communication, this essay argues that Zanzotto’s and Menicanti’s embrace of the nonverbality of plant communication becomes key in the process of meaning-making. A narration of and with plants is the antidote to what they understand as the ultimate malady of language that prevents it from grasping and conveying the richness of the world after it has supplanted the nonhuman domain. Through a close reading of four poems that illustrates how the poets embrace the eloquent silences, gaps, hesitations, and overabundance of meaning of the vegetal realm, this essay foregrounds the boundary-breaking quality of Zanzotto’s and Menicanti’s poetry as a space for rich human-nonhuman exchanges. Ultimately, this essay argues that by declining to place themselves above plants and exert power over them, Zanzotto and Menicanti usher in the Symbiocene, the era characterized by multispecies coexistence, mutual support, and interdependence. Their poetry creates spaces where the human can lean into the more-than-human and, for one brief instant, get a taste of existing in harmony with the life that pulsates all around., Este ensayo explora el entretejido de las narrativas vegetal y elemental a través de la poesía de Andrea Zanzotto y Daria Menicanti, y muestra cómo los encuentros inesperados con diferentes especies, una actitud receptiva radical del mundo, la creencia en las raíces comunes de todas las formas de vida, y la aceptación de la vulnerabilidad en las interacciones con otros puntualizan sus experiencias del paisaje. Multispecies ethnography attempts to bring to the forefront those animal lives previously overlooked by charting our shared social worlds and showing how humans and nonhumans are mutually affected by social, cultural and political processes. The resistance in postcolonial critique to focus on nonhuman animal subjects stems from making the colonised and the animal comparable and the fear that such an association may dehumanise the human subject. This paper suggests that multispecies ethnography influenced by Latour, Haraway, Tsing and others is a useful tool for analysing postcolonial contexts because of its emphasis on relation, mutuality and alliances. However, I suggest that this inheritance is rebuilt as a postcolonial multispecies ethnography because of its attention to five aspects that is common to both fields: subaltern, local, collective, representation and decolonisation. By a careful reading of these key concepts with examples from contemporary literature, I show how "postcolonial" multispecies ethnographies engage with hybrid identities that are culturally produced and historically situated and how they register the nonhuman animals as narrativisable subjects who are nevertheless “irretrievably heterogeneous” (284). In this ethnographic emergence, postcolonial multispecies ethnography re-dignifies the nonhuman animal subject which opens up the radical possibility of realizing their embodied perspectives., La etnografía multiespecie intenta poner en primera fila las vidas de aquellos animales que anteriormente se han ignorado trazando los mundos sociales compartidos y mostrando cómo humanos y no humanos se ven mutuamente afectados por los procesos sociales, culturales y políticos. La resistencia de la crítica poscolonial a la hora de fijarse en los sujetos animales no humanos surge de que la comparación del colonizado y el animal pueda deshumanizar al sujeto humano. Este ensayo sugiere que la etnografía multiespecie influida por Latour, Haraway, Tsing y otros es una herramienta útil para analizar los contextos poscoloniales debido a su énfasis en la relación, la mutualidad y las alianzas. This short piece focuses on the work of the German “celebrity conservationist,” Bernhard Grzimek, situating it in the context of historical and contemporary debates about the political and ecological importance of national parks. Grzimek’s role in the creation of Bavarian Forest National Park may not be as well-known as his public ministrations on behalf of the wild animals of the Serengeti, but in several ways his work in and for these two national parks, engaging with the fraught politics of the period, was intertwined. The essay looks at some of these overlaps, using them to make the case for national parks as complex geopolitical formations in which human and animal interests alternately collide and converge. The essay also makes the case for national parks as multi-scalar entities that need to be understood—politically and ecologically—in both local and global, both national and transnational terms. Finally, the essay cites the multiple roles of Grzimek to re-examine the ambivalent role of the celebrity conservationist as a media spokesperson and publicity-conscious advocate for the world’s wildlife., Este breve trabajo aborda la obra del “conservacionista” y al mismo tiempo “celebridad,” Bernhard Grzimek, al que se sitúa en el contexto de los debates históricos y contemporáneos sobre la importancia política y ecológica de los parques nacionales. This article examines the cross-discursive constellation of hip hop studies, ecocriticism, Black Studies, and literary studies. It proposes the notion of “hip hop naturalism” to come to terms with the way in which current U.S.-American rappers express their social ecologies. Taking its cue from scholars such as Imani Perry, Gregory Phipps, and Kecia Driver Thompson, the article argues for the relevance of literary naturalism in contemporary forms of cultural expression: not merely in the audiovisual archives of TV or film, but in hip hop lyrics. Greve scrutinizes how rap has dealt with themes of social heredity, cultural ecology, and structural racial violence by using similar or even identical diction to that of turn-of-the twentieth-century American literary naturalists. Furthermore, juxtaposing the essentializing aspects of post-Darwinian discourse with those of Afro-pessimism, the article ultimately argues that what Darwinism was to authors like Theodore Dreiser, Jack London, and Frank Norris, Afro-pessimist discourse is to major representatives of contemporary rap, including Mobb Deep, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, and Kendrick Lamar. The writings of Frank Wilderson III and other scholars within current Black Studies thus figure as a social-philosophical grounding on which the given lyricist might map his or her own take on the lived experience of the black individual in contemporaneity. While racial inequality has always been a central notion within hip hop literature and culture, it is this naturalist bent that renders possible a more thoroughly ecocritical reading of how rap songs both underscore and subvert, with critical defiance, the systemic naturalization of black life as inferior., Este artículo analiza la constelación cros-discursiva de los estudios del hip hop, la ecocrítica, los estudios afroamericanos, y los estudios literarios. Propone la noción del «naturalismo del hip hop» para asimilar la forma en que los actuales raperos estadounidenses expresan sus ecologías sociales. While early hip hop could still offer social commentary, global issues began to disappear from the genre by the late 90s and early 2000s. Due to gangsta rap’s emphasis on authenticity and on the individual’s ‘realness,’ issues of social and environmental justice seem to have become increasingly inaccessible to rap music: any attempts to address wider, ‘real’ issues, if they were to happen, took the risk of appearing not ‘real’ but inauthentic, cynical capitalizations on social issues at best. This paper seeks to outline how Snoop Lion’s “Reincarnated” (2013) and in particular its eighth track “Smoke the Weed” employs the imagery of Reggae and Rastafarianism to reconstitute, transform, or “reincarnate” hip hop and thereby once again open it up to social and environmental commentary. While at first sight it is merely another glorification of recreational marihuana use in line with Snoop Dogg’s earlier, pre-Lion oeuvre, “Smoke the Weed” offers a highly complex critique of the environment and humans’ place and agency within it. “Smoke the Weed” can be seen to discuss, primarily through the metaphors of seeds, plant-growth, and marihuana use, the interconnection between (the necessity for) social action and (the necessity for) environmental action. Snoop harnesses the performativity of gangsta rap to offer a sincere, if never really ‘authentic,’ vision of green street consciousness. Through his clear lack of ‘realness’ as a Reggae artist, Snoop Lion can mobilize ‘naturalness’ for hip hop., Mientras que en sus comienzos el hip hop aún podía ofrecer cierto comentario social, los temas globales empezaron a desaparecer del género a finales de los 90 y comienzos de los 2000. Through the usage of Timothy Morton’s hyperobjects (2013) as a heuristic, this essay aims to portray how Ocean Acidification can be read as a hyperobject affecting tropical seawaters and beyond. Furthermore, it illustrates how the arts and humanities, through their hermeneutical gaze, might help us grasp Ocean Acidification as a hyperobject and the wide array of other objects that act upon each other in such acidic oceanic waters. In this task, the article will close-read the “Underwater Woman” set of pictures by Christine Ren (2018) understanding the interpretation of art as a tool to reconnect cognition and emotion to move from the understanding of a crisis to the feeling of such crisis. Finally, it aims to shed light upon the implications arising from considering Ocean Acidification as a hyperobject. By connecting the theoretical, visual and political in the same narrative, this essay highlights the transformative potential of interpretation and thinking through hyperobjects. With this, the challenges of the Anthropocene are put at the forefront, situating specific events and problematics in a planetary scale., A través de la teoría de los Hiperobjetos de Timothy Morton (2013) como herramienta de análisis, este ensayo trata de ilustrar cómo la acidificación oceánica se ha convertido en un hiperobjeto, afectando las aguas más allá de los trópicos. Con esto en consideración, el ensayo busca analizar la manera en la cual las artes y las humanidades, a través de su mirada hermenéutica, pueden ayudarnos a comprender estos hiperobjetos junto con los diferentes objetos que actúan sobre ellos mismos en un entorno ácido. En esta tarea, analiza el set de fotografías Underwater Woman de Christine Ren (2018), comprendiendo la interpretación del arte como una herramienta para reconectar cognición con emoción, moviendo el sujeto des de la comprensión hasta la experiencia sensorial de la actual crisis. Dans le contexte actuel de la crise écologique et de la pandémie de Covid-19, alors qu’il est nécessaire de “repenser les rapports entre humains et non-humains”(Philippe Descola), cet article propose une relecture comparée de deux œuvres issues de la littérature de langue allemande, parues à douze ans d’intervalle, en pleine guerre froide, “Die Wand” (1963) de l’auteure autrichienne Marlen Haushofer, et “Minotaurus: Eine Ballade” (1985) de l’écrivain suisse Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Je m’intéresserai dans ces récits à ce qui fait et défait les collectifs, à ce que Marielle Macé a appelé la “grammaire des attachements”.Comment s’exprime par les mots, notamment les pronoms personnels, le travail qui consiste à se nouer les uns aux autres, et ces liens se nouent-ils de façon juste? Les deux ouvrages étudiés parviennent-ils à définir un “nous”, à faire émerger une communauté des organismes vivants, humains et non-humains? L’article s’interrogera sur l’apport de la littérature à la “composition d’un monde commun”(Bruno Latour), en se demandant si les scenarii proposés dans les deux œuvres rendent possible un “espoir actif”(Joanna Macy), et ce qu’ils nous apprennent sur l’histoire de l’idée de nature à l’heure des grands bouleversements écologiques., In the context of the current environmental crisis and Covid-19 pandemic, as it is becoming increasingly urgent to “rethink the relationships between human and non-human beings” (Philippe Descola), this paper offers a comparative reading of two works of German-language literature, both published, within a space of twelve years, during the Cold War: “Die Wand” (1963) by Austrian writer Marlen Haushofer and “Minotaurus: Eine Ballade” (1985) by Swiss writer Friedrich Dürrenmatt. In these two narratives, I will focus on the way communities are made and unmade, on what Marielle Macé has defined as “the grammar of attachments”. How do words, especially personal pronouns, convey the process by which beings connect one to the other, and are the connections made solid and harmonious ones? Do these two works manage to give rise to a community of living, human and non-human entities? This paper will examine the role of literature in building “a common world” (Bruno Latour), asking whether the scripts outlined in the two books can raise “active hope” (Joanna Macy) and what they teach us about the history of the concept of nature in a time of great environmental change., En el contexto actual de la crisis ecológica y de la pandemia de Covid-19, en un momento en el que es necesario "repensar la relación entre los humanos y los no humanos" (Philippe Descola), este artículo propone una relectura comparada de dos obras de la literatura en lengua alemana, publicadas con doce años de diferencia, en plena Guerra Fría, “El muro” (1963) de la autora austriaca Marlen Haushofer, y “Minotaure: Una balada” (1985) del escritor suizo Friedrich Dürrenmatt. En estas historias me interesaré por lo que hace y deshace los colectivos, por lo que Marielle Macé ha llamado la "gramática de los apegos". ¿Cómo se expresa con palabras el trabajo de vinculación con los demás, sobre todo con pronombres personales, y se vinculan de forma correcta? ¿Logran las dos obras estudiadas definir un "nosotros", poner de manifiesto una comunidad de organismos vivos, humanos y no humanos? Murray Bail’s 1998 novel “Eucalyptus” is an exposition of land ownership, plant classification and human-land relations, using a fairy tale structure. Bail uses parodic excess to deftly undermine settler preoccupations and European traditions that have historically been transposed onto the Australian bush. However, upon a second reading twenty-four years after the first, this author detected an absence of decolonial context in the book, relative to the time of publication, and an unintended reinforcement of misogyny that requires fresh interrogation. This author’s own work as a member of a Dirt Witch collective presents as a dovetailed creative object—an urban forest artwork 2021—and allows a witchy reading of Bail’s 1998 book and more contemporary attempts to redress colonial failures. Even though the texts that this article refers to as “feminist gentrifier memoirs” are not exclusively examples of garden writing, their feminist writers’ gardening practices feature prominently to explore their conflicted position in a gentrifying neighborhood and the networks of care that form out of neighborly interactions over the garden. These texts employ modes and affordances of garden writing, feminist memoir, urban memoir, and gentrification fiction. Drawing on urban studies, literary studies, and environmental humanities, the article turns to Anne Elizabeth Moore’s “Gentrifier” (2021) and Vikki Warner’s “Tenemental” (2018) as engagements with the complex emotions caused by their writers’ white privilege, homeownership, and complicity in processes of displacement and real estate speculation. Which ethical consequences do these feminist writers draw from their benefiting from and contribution to the gentrification of their cities? And how does their gardening allow them to develop a feminist ethics of urban gardening in this specific context? The article further considers the ways these writers are influenced by the activism of community gardening and how their gardening relates to sustainability measures of cities, including urban farms and gardens (summarized under the keywords green or environmental gentrification)., Aunque los textos a los que este artículo se refiere como "memorias feministas de gentrificadoras" no son ejemplos exclusivos de escritura sobre jardines, las prácticas de jardinería de sus escritoras feministas ocupan un lugar destacado para explorar su posición conflictiva en un barrio gentrificado y las redes de cuidado que se forman a partir de las interacciones vecinales en torno al jardín. Gardening as an activity characterised by attentiveness to nature and willingness to adapt to and care for it, and the idea of gardening the planet have attracted recent interest in the context of debates on the Anthropocene. Following an introduction which explains how the Anthropocene challenges the traditional binary division between nature and culture, this article sketches an overview of historical conceptions of the ‘natural’ garden which anticipated aspects of contemporary thinking on “homo hortensis” (Astrid Schwarz), i.e. humanity as an integral part of nature, dwelling actively in it and enhancing it rather than consuming or destroying it. The second, longer part of the article argues that garden literature, initially in the form of prose fiction, and latterly in that of autobiographically framed essays describing the author’s experiences in garden-making and reflecting on their wider implications, have contributed to the reimagining of human/nature relations which the Anthropocene demands. Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s “Julie or the New Heloise” (1761) is examined as Early Anthropocene novel which anticipated aspects of Anthropocene thinking which find more explicit formulation in Michael Pollan’s work of nonfiction garden writing, “Second Nature” (1991)., La jardinería, como actividad caracterizada por la atención a la naturaleza y la voluntad de adaptarse a ella y cuidarla, y la idea de cultivar un jardín para el planeta han suscitado recientemente un creciente interés en el contexto de los debates sobre el Antropoceno. When gardening and Caribbean islands are mentioned, one cannot but think of Jamaica Kincaid and of the way in which she has articulated the complex relationship between colonialism and gardens, between people and notions such as place and situatedness. The very idea of nature in the Caribbean is strongly connoted, bearing the brunt of age-old associations with exoticism, mystery, unpredictability, or even madness. The symbolic meanings gardens take on in this region are therefore numerous and multifaceted, and if some have been lengthily discussed, others might still be worth exploring. Such is the case of backyards and vegetable gardens in Maryse Condé’s “En Attendant la Montée des Eaux”: in a violence-torn, poverty-afflicted, and politically unstable Haiti, the orphaned Movar makes people’s lives more bearable by recreating beauty around them, and by giving order to their unruly surroundings. His actions are more than a simple imposition of man over nature, they are also a metaphoric restoration of a lost balance, long forgotten because of other men’s blind exploitation of both human and natural resources in an environment rendered all the more fragile by its fluctuating weather patterns. This paper presents some considerations on Caribbean soil ecologies, with a particular focus on Guadeloupe and Haiti, and on the ways in which the gardener-garden relationship might contribute to restoring damaged ecosystems. Through the character of Movar and the Jardin d’Allah he tends to, concepts such as care time, reciprocal gardening and plant agency are explored. The precarious contexts in which acts of gardening take place allow for the words of Maryse Condé to be read as a paradigm for finding rootedness and balance in a politically, socially, and ecologically suffering world. Finally, Movar’s story is translated on a global scale, as an effective model of social sustainability and responsibility., Cuando se habla de jardinería y las islas del Caribe, no se puede dejar de pensar en Jamaica Kincaid, especialmente en la forma en que articula la compleja relación entre el colonialismo y los jardines, entre las personas y las nociones de lugar y situación. This essay explores what happened when I recreated an allotment in the style of the year 1918. The plot was located on a charity allotment site in the city of Oxford in the United Kingdom and cultivated during the growing season of 2020 to2021. There have been people growing on the site for over a century. I planted open pollinated non-hybrid heritage seeds from the era. Reflecting on the use of landscape as an archive, I use both academic and creative responses to the soil as a repository of memory. The plot itself became a living memorial that diverse members of the public visited, to share food and engage with the plot and the themes it generated. These themes were the current COVID-19 pandemic, the 1918/1919 flu pandemic, and the First World War in Africa and Europe. In contrast to contested public memorials, the allotment garden space facilitated restoration. This essay therefore examines what can be enabled through a co-creating a multispecies gardening practice. It discusses whether the inclusion of nature enables a different engagement with challenging histories. By working with a store of memory within the natural world, the case study of the 1918 allotment demonstrates the ways in which it is possible to transcend both time and space, to open up counter narratives of key periods in global history. The 1918 allotment also offers up a methodological approach that works with the practice of decolonisation as “convivial” (Nyamnjoh). A meeting place for varied peoples and more-than-human others to come together in transformation, through urban gardening and working alongside and with more-than-human gardeners., Este ensayo híbrido explora lo que sucedió cuando recreé una parcela al estilo del año 1918. Harlem Renaissance poet and gardener Anne Spencer drew inspiration from both her garden and reading. In a poem entitled “Taboo,” Spencer described reading “garden and seed catalogs, Browning, Housman, Whitman […] oh anything…” and, in doing so, asserted the significance of her catalogs alongside literary works as inspiration for her poetry. The poem as a whole describes how Black women evade the Jim Crow South through covert activities like reading which for Spencer, importantly included garden and seed catalogs. Where Spencer’s poetry and garden have been the subject of academic research, her catalogs have yet to receive the same scholarly attention. This paper argues that by placing garden and seed catalogs in the same category of taboo reading as canonical poets and conventional forms of journalism, Spencer aligns the botanical with the literary as a form of resistance. The seed catalogs Spencer engaged with reveal a long history of racism in the cultivation and naming of garden plants. This paper examines the history of seed catalogs, showing how the naming of plants is a continuation of the racist logic of possession, reflected in the naming of plants by stripping the plant of its previous context and replacing it with the names of colonial scientists and racial slurs. Spencer’s poetic insistence on dispossession, the literal and metaphorical disembodiment and ejection from property, pushes against conceptions of ownership over the natural world in that it subverts the racist logic of possession. I contend that Anne Spencer actively intertwined histories by drawing on catalogs, poetry, and gardening to create new ecologies in the spaces between reading and writing, lyrical and material. The new ecology of Spencer’s garden far exceeds a place where plants are grown but rather becomes a space that blooms through the material, the lyrical, and social spaces, leaving behind instead a living archive of rebellion., La poeta y jardinera del renacimiento de Harlem, Anne Spencer, se inspiraba tanto en su jardín como en la lectura. In the first season of the television Eco Noir crime series “Fortitude” (2015) the polar bear appears as a sticky object that embodies an ambiguous affective charge as an icon of global warming. This article discusses the ways in which the polar bear evokes viewer affect in the series through two discourses. The first one relates to violence, essentially present in crime narratives, and how the human and nonhuman animal are positioned in relation to global warming, violence and each other. It raises questions of place and belonging in a local and global context and examines how the polar bear is constructed in terms of stranger danger and victimization in relation to human animals and the threat of global warming. The second one targets the ways in which the polar bear is rendered sticky as the object of the human gaze and how this process of human animals looking at photographs of bears both constructs and deconstructs the subject-object relation, hierarchy and agency. Methodologically, the article draws on “close looking” and the main theoretical starting points are ecocriticism and affect theory. The article argues that the representation of the polar bear contributes in essential ways to the socially and environmentally critical emphasis essential in contemporary crime narratives including “Fortitude”: the distracting and emotionally charged representation of the polar bear evokes ambiguous affective responses in viewers. Thus, as the article further argues, a representation of this kind is capable of—and liable to— inducing a heightened awareness of the present environmental crisis than a more straightforward, less affectively charged representation., En la primera temporada de “Fortitude” (2015), la serie policial de televisión Eco Noir, el oso polar aparece como una figura recurrente que representa una carga afectiva ambigua como símbolo del calentamiento global. As a form of literature that engages with the lived realities of farming life, the Georgic offers an insight into the close working relationship that is possible between humans and nature, a relationship that may in turn be described as ecological in its concern with adaptation and sustainability. This essay focuses on three examples of a Victorian Georgic literature that highlight both the possibilities and pitfalls of making this association: Thomas Hardy’s “Tess of the d’Urbervilles” (1891), which illustrates life at Talbothays Dairy, and later, on a marginal sheep/corn farm on the uplands at Flintcomb-Ash; Richard Jefferies’s “Amaryllis at the Fair” (1887), which depicts a struggling Wiltshire smallholding; and Hubert Crackanthorpe’s short story, “Anthony Garstin’s Courtship” (1896), which focuses on Garstin’s life in a hill farming community. All three narratives were set during a period when innovations in “high farming” effected a shift away from self sufficient and potentially sustainable forms of farming to a modern, mechanized, and systematically exploitative approach to the land; the forms of farming these texts describe are, by contrast, survivals of an earlier period. As these narratives illustrate, more traditional alternatives to high farming nevertheless involved back-breaking and often poorly paid work. Moreover, and while these farms were passed over in the move to high farming, they were still exposed to the vagaries of a now globalised market, and the periodic depressions that were a result: whatever ecological balance these alternative forms of farming embodied, it was threatened by these socio-economic pressures. Nevertheless, these narratives offer an insight into what an eco-Georgic might mean, as a form of writing properly attentive to the challenges of reconciling human and nonhuman needs, and accommodating both within a global, capitalist framework. These works are, furthermore, alert to the difficulty of how best to (re)present those challenges; each marks a shift away from conventional realism and towards new literary modes better able to confront the idealising, pastoral expectations of an urban readership. As such, these works emerge as prototypical forms of a modern, self-reflexive form of (eco-)Georgic mindful of the practical difficulties of sustainable living, and flexible enough to find innovative ways of representing them., Como forma de literatura comprometida con las realidades vividas en la agricultura, el geórgico ofrece un entendimiento de la cercana relación de trabajo que es posible entre humanos y naturaleza, una relación que puede describirse posteriormente como ecológica en cuanto a su preocupación por la adaptación y la sostenibilidad. Do we need the modish term “eco-georgic” to help us discover the unsentimental, holistic, healing qualities in the best georgic writing of the Anthropocene? When were georgics not “eco”? Is there a “post georgic” in forms of contemporary literature that seem to reject husbandry altogether, such as rewilding texts? Do such categories serve any purpose to readers and critics in the Anthropocene? This essay argues that such careful distinctions do, indeed, matter more than ever now as we reconsider our sustainable options in husbandry, land-management and what sustainability might look like, as it is represented and explored in our fiction and non-fiction georgic literature in Britain at the present. One might expect contemporary georgic writing to exemplify the environmental engagement implied in the term “eco-georgic”. In fact, contemporary georgic can be environmentally radical or apparently indirect in its implications for sustainability. It remains as diverse, hybrid and composted in the past as Virgil’s original text. This essay begins by considering definitions, with reference to Virgil’s founding Latin text, begun in the third decade BCE, the “Georgics”. It recognises Laura Sayre’s complaint that ecocriticism has neglected georgic writing, and argues that this is certainly true for contemporary British georgic texts. This essay focuses on contemporary georgic fiction and non-fiction in relation to Virgil’s founding text. The novels of Cynan Jones, Tom Bullough, Marie-Elsa Bragg and Tim Pears are discussed and contrasted with one by Melissa Harrison that might mistakenly be thought of as georgic. Three categories of non-fiction are identified and discussed with examples: instructional georgic, personal memoir and future-oriented georgic. Consideration of the latter leads to conclusions about their inevitable overlaps and a final call for a radical mutual agency to embed animism and enchantment into contemporary georgic writing., ¿Necesitamos el término de moda "eco-geórgico" para ayudarnos a descubrir las cualidades no sentimentales, holísticas y curativas en la mejor escritura geórgica del Antropoceno? ¿Cuándo no eran "eco" las geórgicas? ¿Hay un "post-geórgico" en las formas de literatura contemporánea que parecen rechazar por completo la agricultura, como los textos de retorno a la vida silvestre? ¿Sirven tales categorías para los lectores y críticos en el Antropoceno? Este ensayo argumenta que tales distinciones cuidadosas, de hecho, importan más que nunca ahora que reconsideramos nuestras opciones sostenibles en la agricultura, la gestión de la tierra y cómo podría ser la sostenibilidad, tal y como está representada y desarrollada en la literatura de ficción y no ficción en Gran Bretaña en la actualidad. Departing from Jane Suzanne Carroll’s contention that “Landscapes are at once geographical and historical, natural and cultural, experienced and represented, and present a spatial interface between human culture and physical terrain” (2), this article draws on game studies (Aarseth; Sicart; Yee; Isbister) and on discussions of game design (Schell; Chen; Sahlin) to analyse the landscape and avatar design of “Journey” and “Unravel”. Developing the term “semiotic register” as an analytical lens, the article seeks to pin-point the means by which the two games move the player to adopt distinctly different attitudes and relationships to the games’ natural scenes. To scrutinize georgic’s position between progress and tradition, this article will focus on the way those forces become legible in poems composed between the end of the First and Second World Wars. I will examine Vita Sackville-West’s long georgics “The Land” (1926) and The Garden (1946) to argue that they indicate the scope of what is possible in the genre given the challenges of both modernity and modernism. Her poems demonstrate that, in seeking to navigate the changing material and cultural landscapes, the labour of maintaining an imaginative tradition can be both productive and problematic. The article will assess the way Sackville-West positions herself as a writer in relation to the figures of the agricultural labourer and gardener and to the classical tradition, as well as her claims about the language in which georgic can and should be written. Each poem will also be compared to the poetry and criticism of her modernist contemporary T.S. Eliot, with particular reference to “The Waste Land, Four Quartets” and his essay “Tradition and the Individual Talent.” Engaged in a struggle on both agricultural and cultural fronts, “The Land” and “The Garden” are prone to inconsistency and, even by their own standards, failure. But in these failures as well as their successes both poems are committed to finding a way of writing human engagement with the land and literature. As such, they can be instructively read in the present moment to prompt questions about the way we engage with land and language in the Anthropocene, negotiating between competing modes of writing and more broadly between natural and human agency., Para examinar la posición geórgica entre el progreso y la tradición, este artículo se centrará en cómo esas fuerzas se hacen legibles en poemas compuestos entre el final de la Primera y la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Examinaré los largos geórgicos de Vita Sackville-West, “The Land” (1926) y “The Garden” (1946) para argumentar su lugar en el género ante los desafíos, tanto de la modernidad como del modernismo. Building on evolving theories and criticism of post-Vietnam War environmentalism, this essay places Wendell Berry’s agrarian essays and “Mad Farmer Poems” at the cusp of significant ideological change in twenty-first century ecocritical thought. The semi-fictional mad farmer developed in Berry’s poetry collection illustrates how the rural farmer serves as a catalyst for revolutionary environmental change that peacefully marries the private and public uses of wilderness. My analysis of Berry’s poems demonstrates how the poet’s use of symbolism, metaphor, and peaceful protest positions the farmer as the most qualified person to lead us away from mainstream and radical environmentalism and toward a movement indicative of deep-rooted social change., Basándose en la evolución de las teorías y la crítica del ecologismo posterior a la guerra de Vietnam, este ensayo sitúa los ensayos agrarios de Wendell Berry y los "Poemas del granjero loco" en la cúspide de un cambio ideológico significativo en el pensamiento ecocrítico del siglo XXI. El granjero loco semi-ficticio desarrollado en la colección de poesía de Berry ilustra cómo el agricultor rural sirve como catalizador para un cambio medioambiental revolucionario que casa pacíficamente con los usos privados y públicos de la naturaleza. Mi análisis de los poemas de Berry demuestra cómo el uso del simbolismo, la metáfora y la protesta pacífica por parte del poeta posicionan al agricultor como la persona más cualificada para alejarnos del ecologismo dominante y radical y hacia un movimiento indicativo de un cambio social profundamente arraigado.

Resumen En este artículo propongo que las visiones de intelectuales latinoamericanos del siglo XX acerca de la injusticia ambiental y su comprensión sobre la relación entre esta y los procesos coloniales y neocoloniales pueden ser aplicadas como aparato de lectura para expandir -y subvertir- las interpretaciones simbólicas de distopías juveniles como The Hunger Games y The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, de Suzanne Collins. Sostengo que leerlas como una alegoría expone los puntos ciegos del Norte Global respecto a su intervención y responsabilidad en la creciente deuda ecológica y su escandalosa huella del extractivismo en el Sur Global. Complemento esta lectura alegórica con una comparación desde la esperanza crítica de Paulo Freire, para resignificar la novela y entenderla no como una distopía postapocalíptica en un futuro incierto y ficticio, sino como una narración figurada desde el pensamiento utópico; es decir, leída en clave desde un presente que podemos transformar. Abstract In this article, I propose to understand the insights of 20th century Latin American intellectuals on environmental injustice and its connection to colonialism and neocolonialism as a reading apparatus to expand -and even subvert- the symbolic meaning of popular dystopian narratives such as The Hunger Games (2008) and its prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2020) by Suzanne Collins. I assert that reading these narratives as an allegory of the exchanges between the Global South and the Global North exposes blind spots of the latter regarding its performance and responsibility in the ever-growing ecological debts and the footprint of extractivism in the South. I complement this allegoric reading by comparing both novels from Paulo Freire's critical hope perspective, which re-signifies the novel by understanding it as a narrative sketched out by utopian thought, not as a postapocalyptic dystopia; that is, read from a present that we can transform.

This paper aims at presenting a critical approach to teaching ecological, postcolonial and ethnic minority topics in the (foreign language) classroom, describing the need to interrelate these three issues in both research and teaching. It illustrates how Western utilitarian perspectives on both humans and nature must be counterbalanced with alternative stances, such as those provided by indigenous views of reciprocity. With regard to teaching scenarios, it suggests the use of multi-text selections in line with the principle of presenting multiple perspectives on global issues. It suggests that two seemingly contradictory teaching/learning objectives can be combined: bolstering up students’ empathetic skills in understanding ecological and interculturally relevant issues on the one hand and becoming critically aware of textual strategies employed to manipulate readers. We use the hitherto less frequently observed example of the demands of the Chilean indigenous minority of the Mapuche to illustrate how different positions published in the English language on the Internet can be used in the foreign language classroom to discuss the issues at stake here: the inextricable interrelatedness of ecological exploitation of natural resources with processes of sociocultural and economic marginalisation and oppression of ethnic minority groups and their worldviews across the globe., Este artículo busca presentar un acercamiento crítico al tratamiento de la ecología, el postcolonialismo, y las minorías étnicas en las clases de lenguas extranjeras, describiendo la necesidad de establecer una relación entre estas tres temáticas en la investigación y la docencia. Se muestra cómo las perspectivas utilitaristas occidentales sobre el ser humano y la naturaleza deben de contrarrestarse con imaginarios alternativos, como, por ejemplo, aquellos basados en perspectivas indígenas en torno a la reciprocidad. Respecto a los escenarios de enseñanza, se propone el uso de selecciones de textos múltiples, siguiendo el principio de la presentación de diversidad de perspectivas sobre temáticas globales. Así, dos objetivos de aprendizaje aparentemente contradictorios pueden ser combinados: fomentar, por un lado, las habilidades empáticas de los alumnos para comprender las problemáticas ecológicas e interculturales de mayor relevancia en la actualidad, mientras, por el otro lado, inspirar una conciencia crítica en torno a las estrategias textuales empleadas para manipular a los lectores. Nos apoyamos, así pues, en el ejemplo de las demandas de las comunidades Mapuche en Chile para demostrar cómo diferentes posiciones publicadas en internet, en inglés, pueden utilizarse en las aulas de lengua extranjera para discutir sus implicaciones. Estas son la relación intrínseca entre la explotación de recursos naturales con los procesos de marginalización sociocultural y económica, la opresión de grupos minoritarios y las cosmovisiones de los mismos desde perspectivas procedentes de varias partes del mundo.

The explosion of electric and electronic waste (e-waste) is one of the major environmental challenges of our time. Only a small amount of e-waste is properly disposed of or recycled, with most e-waste ending up in landfills or incinerators, or being exported to developing countries where it represents an even greater hazard to both the environment and human health and life. This article tackles this issue in the context of English as a foreign language teaching, arguing that exploring the global streams of e-waste and its environmental impacts at a time when there is an unprecedented demand for electric and electronic devices in all areas of life, including education, can help develop learners’ sustainability literacy. The first part of the paper looks at the concept of e-waste, its economic implications, and the social impacts arising from e-waste (disposal). The ensuing part then looks at e-waste in the context of global sustainability initiatives which, for example, aim at encouraging individuals to become more committed to sustainable lifestyles and thus help to mitigate climate change. The following sections are of a more practical nature, exploring the potential of the topic for the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom, arguing that English as a foreign language no longer solely focuses on developing learners’ language skills but also a plethora of other competences that allow learners to participate in global (environmental) discourses. The practical classroom example takes an inquiry-based approach, which not only allows learners to pursue their own interests but also develops their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In this example, Nigeria serves to illustrate the devastating effects of (illegal) e-waste (disposal) and the complex socio-economic aspects of e-waste (mis-)management., La explosión de desechos eléctricos y electrónicos (e-waste) es uno de los mayores desafíos ambientales de nuestro tiempo. Sólo una pequeña cantidad de desechos electrónicos se elimina o recicla adecuadamente y la mayoría termina en vertederos o incineradores; o bien, se exportan a los países en vías de desarrollo, donde esto representa un peligro aún mayor tanto para el medio ambiente como para la salud y la vida humana. En el presente artículo se aborda esta cuestión en el contexto de la enseñanza del inglés como lengua extranjera, y se sostiene que la exploración de las tendencias mundiales sobre desechos electrónicos y sus repercusiones ambientales en una época donde existe una demanda sin precedentes de aparatos eléctricos y electrónicos en todos los ámbitos de la vida, incluida la educación, puede ayudar al desarrollo de los conocimientos de los alumnos en materia de sostenibilidad. En la primera parte del documento se analizan el concepto de desechos electrónicos, sus repercusiones económicas y los efectos sociales de la eliminación de desechos electrónicos. En la segunda parte, se examinan los desechos electrónicos en el contexto de las iniciativas mundiales sobre sostenibilidad que, por ejemplo, tienen como objetivo alentar a las personas para que se comprometan más con los estilos de vida sostenibles y así, contribuyan a mitigar el cambio climático. Las secciones subsecuentes son de carácter práctico, y en ellas se explora el potencial del tema para el aula de enseñanza del inglés (EFL), dado que la enseñanza del inglés ya no se centra únicamente en el desarrollo de las aptitudes lingüísticas de los estudiantes, sino también en una plétora de otras competencias que les permiten participar en los discursos (ambientales) mundiales. El ejemplo práctico del aula adopta un enfoque basado en la investigación, que no sólo permite a los alumnos perseguir sus propios intereses, sino también desarrolla su pensamiento crítico y sus aptitudes para la resolución de problemas. En este ejemplo se usa el caso de Nigeria para ilustrar los efectos devastadores de (la eliminación ilegal de) los desechos electrónicos y los complejos aspectos socioeconómicos del manejo (inadecuado) de este tipo de desechos.
