Since the middle of the 1980s, a lot of research has focused on the end of the Upper Palaeolithic in France. This article presents an overview of these thirty years of research, organized around four main geographic units which structure our knowledge of these societies. However, this overview aims to bring to light the main dynamics driving the composition of the technical, economic, symbolic and probably socio-cultural systems in France as a whole. Between the end of the Magdalenian and the first stages of the Mesolithic, the history of the hunter-gatherers on this territory underwent three major changes. The rhythms of these changes are still unclear and understanding the forces driving these changes is still difficult, although scenarios based on the very unstable climatic and environmental context are often advanced. This Lateglacial is no longer merely considered to be the antechamber of the Mesolithic –an “EpiPalaeolithic”, as it was called– studied in particular to contextualize the emergence of complex societies, wrongly solely attributed to the Neolithic. These last Pleistocene periods, with their abundant cultural changes and complex evolutionary techno-complexes and traditions, comprise their own research issues and constitute a subject in their own right. Ces derniers temps du Pléistocène, du fait de nombreuses transformations culturelles des techno-complexes et traditions aux schémas évolutifs complexes, sont en réalité particulièrement riches en problématiques de recherches propres.

Since the 1970’s, the study of lithic prehistoric collections in France has improved through a profound modernisation. Andre Leroi-Gourhan, first interested in traditional and ethnological techniques, decided to consider all remains and traces left by a human group within a prehistoric site as evidence of its activity, thus opening the “palethnological perspective”. He also promoted the principle of “chaine operatoire” (that is, to consider the successive actions and gestures engaged in the transformation of diverse raw materials) a notion which had been formerly introduced by Marcel Mauss. But, it is the experimentalists of stone knapping, Francois Bordes and Jacques Tixier, who made it possible to enrich this notion with its concrete applications. Above all, Tixier, armed with his clear practical understanding of knapped pieces and his pedagogic skills, enriched and stabilized the lithic terminology, and systematized the “technological reading” of lithics, in other words, the reading of the direction and order of the different scars (negatives of previous removals) visible upon the surface of a flake, a core, or a shaped tool, thus allowing one to mentally reconstruct the fabrication of a tool or the reduction of a core. He also introduced the capital distinction between the “method of knapping” (the arrangement and succession of the removals to reach the goal of the chaine operatoire, i.e., a type or a class of blanks or tools), and the “knapping techniques” (that is, the practical mode of detachment, e.g., direct percussion with a hard stone or a wooden billet, pressure with an antler or copper point, etc.). On this basis, in 1980, Tixier together with a few close colleagues from France and Belgium introduced the concepts of economy of raw materials, debitage, and tools, all three concepts being corollaries of the concept of management rules. The notion of intention - which articulates the blank production modalities and the morphology of the blanks obtained and that of the final tools - also appears, which is the basis of the postulate according to which the knapping modalities (effective decisions and actions) are coherent with the morphology of the expected or priority products. It is this postulate, parallel to that of “design theory” taken up by Brian Hayden, which founded, through the consideration of all the lithic remains, the French approach in lithic technology: to perceive - to understand - the intentions of lithic production within a site or collection before classifying and measuring. This principle is then applied to the small (324 pieces, including 30 to 40 tools) lithic collection from the site of Yokomichi (Yamagata Dept., Northeastern Honshu), with blade production but without (i.e., anterior to) bladelet or microblade production; thus datable to approximately 18,000 BP C14 non-calibrated, from regional chronostratigraphical comparisons). At first it appears that two different blade productions co-exist: one of light and straight blades with a small platform remnant detached from slender cores, and the other of larger blades with a thick platform remnant detached from wider cores. Among the retouched tools, it is the few “Sugikubo knives” (straight and pointed backed points) whose blanks correspond to the priority intention of the slender core reduction, a few other tools being retouched on “second choice” blanks (irregular, too thick, etc.). Such a Sugibuko knife, in a similar collection, shows a fracture with a ventral elongated tongue [“languette” in French] that strongly indicates that this type of tools is actually, at least in part, a projectile point. Various observations then suggest that the priority intention of the wide core reduction was to obtain one or a few large pointed blades, which are very difficult to achieve, while its many second choice products and by-products (being too short, having cortex, etc.) could have been used as unretouched knives or resharpened as “Kamiyama burins” (these are indeed blades or flakes modified by a “pseudo” upper plane burin blow from an inverse truncation, very similar to Kostienki knives). A further experiment shows that both blade productions were made by direct percussion with a soft stone, but in different ways: by tangential percussion for the light blades with a small platform, and by direct percussion inside the striking platform for the stronger blades with a thick platform.

Ce travail est la version SCD (Scientific Constructs and Data, format de publication de la revue The Arkeotek Journal), nettement remaniée, de quelques passages d'un ouvrage récent (Valentin, 2008), passages qui reprenaient en le modifiant un précédent article (Valentin, 2005a).; L'ampleur des mutations qui se sont produites en Europe occidentale entre le Magdalénien et l'Azilien a été perçue il y a plus d'un siècle. Depuis, ces mutations qui s'enchaînent entre le 14e et le 12e millénaire avant J.-C., notamment au cours du réchauffement tardiglaciaire, ont souvent été interprétées comme une véritable révolution. Or ces divers points de vue, notamment parce qu'ils considèrent l'évolution des sociétés comme un phénomène linéaire - et aussi parce qu'ils simplifient considérablement la diversité du Mésolithique -s'accordent mal avec les résultats auxquels peut aboutir une démarche « paléohistorique » (à propos de cette notion voir Valentin, 2008). C'est ce que nous voulons montrer dans cet essai fondé sur une vingtaine d'années de recherches collectives dans le Bassin parisien ainsi que dans les régions voisines, ce bilan promouvant une démarche explicative qui met en perspective différents ordres de faits, techniques, économiques, voire sociologiques. Le décryptage en cours de ces premiers changements - attribués pour une part à une phase ancienne de l'Azilien - vient avantageusement nourrir les explications que nous avons proposées naguère en confrontant les choix très nettement contrastés qui distinguent la phase récente de l'Azilien et le Magdalénien (voir notamment Julien, 1989 ; Audouze & Enloe, 1991 ; Floss, 1992 ; Fagnart, 1993 ; Valentin, 1995 ; Bodu & Valentin, 1997 ; Street & Baales, 1997). Ces explications établissent en particulier un lien entre, d'une part, la transformation des outillages en silex et des modes de taille et, d'autre part, divers indices suggérant que la programmation sur le long terme des activités de chasse, et, en conséquence, des déplacements successifs des chasseurs a beaucoup diminué entre le Magdalénien et l'Azilien récent (Valentin, 2005a). Ces hypothèses s'inspirent donc des applications archéologiques de l'Optimal Foraging Theory, et notamment des modèles sur la façon dont les chasseurs-cueilleurs nomades gèrent le temps et le risque, adaptant en conséquence leur outillage en pierre (voir notamment Torrence, 1983 ; Perlès, 1992). En complément, cet état des réflexions s'enrichit d'un modèle de J. Pelegrin (2000), inspiré par la Design Theory (voir notamment Bleed, 1986), permettant d'interpréter les changements dans l'armement et son mode de fabrication à la lumière de cette disparition progressive d'une économie programmée. Depuis la formulation de ce modèle, notons que certaines prédictions relatives aux tactiques de chasse ont été validées par les analyses et interprétations d'O. Bignon (2003 ; 2008) que l'auteur s'attache aujourd'hui à développer sur un plus vaste corpus archéozoologique. Au passage, soulignons que ces premières validations montrent que le niveau d'élaboration des faits et des scénarios explicatifs se prête maintenant aussi bien à des démarches hypothético-déductives comme celle proposée par J. Pelegrin qu'à des constructions plus inductives comme celle que nous présentons ici-même.

The multiplication of field work and systematic reanalyses of old collections give the frame of reference for this research. The development of comparative technology creates new methodological tools to reveal not only the concepts guiding the flint knapping activities and the fabrication of tools, but also the place these activities occupied within technological systems. The inquiry starts with groups belonging to the late Magdalenian, who seem to have occupied the region from the Bølling to the beginning of the Allerød interstadial. Consideration of about a dozen new sites allows us to narrow the definition of the technological identity which is the basis of the originality of these groups. This identity is perceived through recurrant technical choices which transcend the diversity of modes of occupation. In addition, the diversity of choices leads us toward the identification of discrete but significant differences, which may be evidence of evolution within this tradition. Later Federmesser groups (cf. Azilian), poorly known south of Paris Basin until recently, have been identified at a number of sites, some of which are stratified. The amplitude of technical changes evidenced by their lithic industries shows a profound modification of economic behaviour during the Alleröd. The recognition of several tendancies (or phases) in this evolution leads us to discuss the pace and causes of this evolutionnary change. After an occupational hiatus during the Late Dryas, at the moment of the Tardi/Postglacial transition, the west and the south of the Paris Basin saw the appearance of particular technical facies long known in the Thames and the Somme : Long Blade assemblages (or "Belloisien"). For now, these facies have been recognized only on sites where flint knapping was the dominant activity and whose objective was essentially the production of blanks for subsequent or later use. We will discuss the cultural identity of the authors of these facies which are the testimonies of an unprecedented phenomenon in this region during the Tardiglacial : fragmentation of the knapping sequence in time and space.; La multiplication des travaux de terrain et la reprise systématique des collections anciennes dessinent le cadre de cette recherche.
